Niner Talk: Bye Week

Posted by Taylor Price on November 2, 2012 – 1:36 PM

The voice of the San Francisco 49ers Ted Robinson was profiled in a 49ers.com feature story earlier today along with his broadcasting partner Eric Davis. Robinson, however, played double-duty for 49ers.com on Friday, also joining us for our latest Niner Talk podcast.

The respected broadcaster discussed his bright spots of the first half of the season, naming third-year guard Mike Iupati and second-year cornerback Chris Culliver as his two most unsung players of the first half for the 49ers.

49ers Count on Will Tukuafu

Posted by Taylor Price on October 8, 2012 – 4:48 PM

Jim Harbaugh set out this offseason to create three-way roles for versatile players on the San Francisco 49ers roster.

Many auditioned to play on offense, defense and special teams, but only defensive tackle Will Tukuafu made a lasting transition.

The 6-foot-4, 293-pound defensive lineman handles multiple roles as a lead-blocking fullback and a kick-off team wedge blocker on special teams.

“He’s carved out a real niche for himself on this ball club,” Harbaugh, the 49ers coach, said on Monday. “A physical presence, both offensively and defensively and special teams. He is a guy that we know we can count on. He’s a count on me guy.”

49ers Offense Mixes It Up

Posted by Alex Espinoza on October 4, 2012 – 5:32 PM

Greg Roman still doesn’t know why the Jets called a timeout around 4-minute mark in the first half of Sunday’s game. Or so he wants you to think.

A look at the game tape will reveal a wide-open Colin Kaepernick lined up as wide receiver without a defender within 15 yards of him, moments before the New York coaching staff called for a timeout. But Roman seems to have trouble remembering the play.

“I don’t know what play you’re talking about,” Roman said with a wry smile.

After some more prodding, it seems Roman might have a hazy recollection of the play-call.

“Yeah, I think he was talking to the official about the previous play,” Roman said with a laugh. “Next question.”

Morning Tailgate: Oct. 3

Posted by Taylor Price on October 3, 2012 – 10:59 AM

Patrick Willis was singled out Wednesday morning as the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week.

However, it wasn’t just Willis who played a major role in the team’s 34-0 dismantling of the New York Jets.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, it was a team-wide effort that enabled San Francisco to improve to 3-1 on the season. Barrows offered his thoughts on the performance in a recent film study review.

“For the first time this season, every 49er who dressed for the game set foot in the game,” Barrows wrote. “And they just didn’t make token appearances. Everyone – from backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick to undrafted rookie Garrett Celek to dime cornerback Perrish Cox – played a role Sunday. Twelve different 49ers either had a carry or a reception on offense, and it would have been 13 if fullback Will Tukuafu hadn’t been interfered with on a late goal-line play.

Morning Tailgate: Sept. 4

Posted by Alex Espinoza on September 4, 2012 – 10:40 AM

At long last, it’s Week 1 of the NFL regular season. The 49ers are headed to Lambeau Field for their season opener against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, but first they have a week of practice at team headquarters in Santa Clara.

The 53-man roster is set and it features a pair of players who are expected to play offense, defense and special teams this season for San Francisco. Will Tukuafu and Demarcus Dobbs take pride in their do-it-all roles with the team and are also roommates on the road. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com spoke to Dobbs about the new responsibilities he and Tukuafu have added to their plates this season.

“Tukuafu and Dobbs were both converted into two-way players in the offseason,” Maiocco writes. “Dobbs played both ways in all three exhibition games in which he appeared. Tukuafu did not see two-way action in training camp until after the first three weeks of camp. He concluded the exhibition season in impressive fashion.”

Today’s Morning Tailgate rounds up the best coverage from Labor Day Weekend and takes a look forward to the Week 1 matchup.

Morning Tailgate: June 11

Posted by Taylor Price on June 11, 2012 – 9:38 AM

Thanks to productive efforts in free agency and in the 2012 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers have added depth to numerous position groups on both sides of the ball.

The added depth figures to keep key veterans like Frank Gore and Justin Smith fresher throughout the upcoming season.

According to a recent report from Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, Gore handled 57-percent of San Francisco’s rushing attempts last season. Following up on Barrows’ initial findings, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com believes Gore’s volume of carries will decrease based on the team’s backfield additions this offseason. Maiocco notes that Gore finished seventh in the NFL in terms of running back playing time.

In addition, Maiocco notes: “Part of the 49ers’ strategy for keeping Gore fresh will be getting comfortable with other running backs on the roster to take on the duty of blitz pickup.”

A similar conundrum is presented by Maiocco in regards to All-Pro defensive tackle Justin Smith, who rarely spent time on the sideline in 2011.

Though the 49ers did not draft, nor sign any defensive line free agents this offseason, several young linemen (Will Tukuafu, Demarcus Dobbs and Ian Williams) are expected to see the field more often in 2012 with the hopes of resting key contributors like Smith and fellow starting defensive tackle Ray McDonald.

According to Maiocco, Smith played the third-most snaps (91.12-percent) of any defensive linemen in the league.

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Morning Tailgate: June 6

Posted by Taylor Price on June 6, 2012 – 9:33 AM

For some time it was believed that Brandon Jacobs would be the biggest addition to the 49ers backfield in a literal sense.

Not anymore.

With 293-pound defensive tackle Will Tukuafu practicing at fullback this offseason in addition to maintaining his defensive line duties, the 49ers might have found an additional blocker for Jacobs and the 49ers running backs.

“Will’s doing a great job athletically,” Jim Harbaugh said after Tuesday’s OTA session, per Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.

Tukuafu even caught a short touchdown pass from Alex Smith during situational red zone work. The second-year defensive lineman who had his 2011 season cut short from a wrist injury, didn’t seek extra attention from his offensive efforts.

Instead, Tukuafu declined to comment on playing fullback, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

The humble, hard-working player made it clear it was for good reason and that he’d potentially talk to the media down the road.

“See if I make the team first,” Tukuafu said. “Got to graduate first.”

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Tony Jerod-Eddie Gets His Kicks

Posted by Taylor Price on June 1, 2012 – 11:05 AM

As an undrafted rookie in the National Football League, there’s plenty of juggling taking place off the field. Players have to manage their time efficiently while learning a new playbook, the name’s of veteran teammates and the coaching styles of a new staff. That happens all while rookies adjust to a new environment in a new city.

Apparently, defensive tackle Tony Jerod-Eddie has taken the juggling term to the field, literally.

The 6-foot-5, 301-pound Texas A&M product could be spotted passing a soccer ball around with defensive line mates Will Tukuafu and Isaac Sopoaga prior to Thursday’s Organized Team Activity in Santa Clara.

It wasn’t so much seeing the players kick the ball around that was surprising, it was the juggling skills of Jerod-Eddie that was rather astonishing. The massive lineman had no problem flicking the soccer ball from foot to foot while defensive teammates looked on.
