It might be the last week of the season, but the 49ers will have plenty to play for when the Arizona Cardinals come to Candlestick Park on Sunday.
San Francisco is part of a muddled NFC playoff picture that has plenty of moving parts. The 49ers (10-4-1) currently hold the No. 3 seed in the NFC, but can finish anywhere from the No. 2 to No. 5 slot when all the dust settles after Week 17.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, won’t be playing past Sunday after losing 10 of their past 11 games following a 4-0 start to the year.
“It’s been tough,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said on Wednesday’s conference call. “This business is about winning games. When you don’t do that it makes everything more difficult.”

Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson has eight interceptions dating back to the beginning of the 2011 season, including last week’s pick against Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. NFL.com put together a behind-the-scenes, black and white photo gallery of the Week 7 victory for the 49ers at Candlestick Park.
Goldson has maintained his status as one of the game’s most complete safeties in 2012 with his hard-hitting ability and knack for forcing turnovers. Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group wrote that Goldson figures to play a big role in the upcoming Monday Night Football matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.
“His contribution in preventing deep passes, plus his efforts on run defense and punt coverage Thursday, earned him a game ball from coach Jim Harbaugh,” Inman wrote. “Goldson also made a fierce stop on running back Marshawn Lynch that Harbaugh called ‘one of the best front-up tackles I’ve ever seen.'”
Today’s Morning Tailgate also features a look back at Eddie DeBartolo Jr.’s legacy, Delanie Walker’s contributions to the 49ers and more.

The Arizona Cardinals were one of just three teams to hand the 49ers a defeat in the 2011 regular season and the two NFC West foes are set to renew their rivalry on Monday night in the desert.
The landscape of the once-maligned division has changed drastically in 2012, as the NFC West now totes four quality teams with top-notch defenses. Heading into his team’s first matchup with the reigning division champions, Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt knows what type of game to expect.
“All of the teams in the NFC West have a defense that’s strong, that’s very physical,” Whisenhunt told Bay Area reporters in his Wednesday conference call. “That’s a great quality for our division to show to the rest of the league. I know that it will be a physical game on Monday night. It always is when we play the 49ers.”

The 49ers and Cardinals will reprise their NFC West rivalry on Sunday in the desert. Though the 49ers have already wrapped up the division title this season, the Cardinals have won four of their last five, the only loss being a 23-7 defeat at Candlestick Park in Week 11.
