Morning Tailgate: No Franchise Tag

By the time the clock struck 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon, it was official: the 49ers wouldn’t be using their franchise tag in 2013. Many viewed All-Pro safety Dashon Goldson as a the team’s top candidate to receive the franchise tag, which would keep him in San Francisco for at least one more season. Once the deadline passed without an agreement, Goldson and 49ers CEO Jed York interacted on Twitter, both stating their desire to work out a long-term deal.

Jed York Named to Fortune’s 40 Under 40

With success both on and off the field rampant for the San Francisco 49ers, CEO Jed York has received recognition for his recent contributions to the five-time Super Bowl champion organization.

With a winning record in 2012 and a new Santa Clara Stadium project well underway, the 49ers CEO has been selected for his second prestigious business award in as many years.

After being named to the Forty Under 40 list by The Sports Business Journal in March of 2012, York has now been selected to Fortune’s annual list of the 40 hottest young business stars under 40.

The 49ers CEO ranks No. 39 on the list.

Morning Tailgate: Sept. 11

The San Francisco 49ers are 1-0 to start the 2012 regular season. Off the field, the franchise has also enjoyed success with the steady progress of the new Santa Clara Stadium, the 49ers future home currently being constructed next to the team’s South Bay headquarters.

Over the weekend, the San Jose Mercury News reported the 49ers had sold $670 million in tickets and luxury suites for a stadium that’ll open in 2014.

“In three months, the Niners have sold 26,520 seats in the upper deck, end zones and corners — 52 percent of those sections — amounting to more than the entire capacity of HP Pavilion or Oracle Arena,” Mercury News reporter Mike Rosenberg wrote. “Interestingly, most of the seats remaining are the cheaper ‘nosebleeds.'”

The stadium project also received exposure from Bloomberg TV’s Nicole Lapin who recently reported on the team’s heavy development of technology for the new building.

“We’d rather be a software-driven stadium than a hardware-driven stadium,” CEO Jed York told Lapin when discussing the vision for the stadium.

York explained that the 49ers are looking at how they can make the fan’s experience better through technology and that the club is putting a ton of time into developing that experience.

Team President Gideon Yu told Lapin that the club is looking at the project like it’s “a blank piece of paper.”

“Let’s fundamentally shape the user experience,” Yu added.
