The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed LB Eric Bakhtiari to a two-year contract.

Bakhtiari (6-3, 250) rejoins the 49ers after appearing in three games earlier this season. He spent the 2012 training camp with the 49ers before being released on 8/31.

Morning Tailgate: Sept. 21

Posted by Alex Espinoza on September 21, 2012 – 11:05 AM

Alex Smith has led the 49ers to a 15-3 regular season record since Jim Harbaugh took over as head coach before the 2011 campaign. Much of Smith’s success has been attributed to Harbaugh, who has helped the 49ers quarterback become one of the league’s most efficient players under center.

Chase Stuart of FootballPerspective.com analyzed advanced statistics and metrics of Smith’s season along with other NFL quarterbacks of the past and concluded that Harbaugh had similar years during his NFL playing career. Stuart specifically looks at Smith’s low interception rate among other things, noting, “Since Harbaugh came to town, Smith has a 93.6 passer rating, the 7th best mark of any quarterback over that time frame.”

Today’s Morning Tailgate also features a look back to yesterday’s show of 49ers support from the San Francisco Giants and more.

Morning Tailgate: Sept. 20

Posted by Taylor Price on September 20, 2012 – 10:19 AM

There’s no denying Jim Harbaugh’s Midas touch with the San Francisco 49ers.

At a 20-game benchmark, including postseason action, Harbaugh is 16-4 in his first stint as a head coach in the National Football League.

Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle recently spoke with several of the Bay Area’s top football minds for their thoughts on Harbaugh’s impressive start to his NFL head coaching career.

“George Seifert, ever loyal to his childhood team, watches the 49ers with heightened interest these days,” Kroichick wrote. “He sees Jim Harbaugh roam the sideline, intensity splayed across his face, and Seifert cannot help but flash back to the time his 49ers played Harbaugh and the Colts in Indianapolis.”

Kroichick also relayed the thoughts of Hall of Fame coach John Madden, who called Harbaugh’s 2011 season one of the best rookie coaching jobs in NFL history.

Morning Tailgate: Aug. 20

Posted by Taylor Price on August 20, 2012 – 10:42 AM

The reviews are in. The 49ers have finished a second preseason game, a 20-9 defeat to the Houston Texans, and there’s been plenty of time to break down the action ever since thanks to NFL’s Preseason Live.

The 49ers had bright spots in defeat, but there’s always room for improvement. In reality, the best thing for the players is having more game tape to dissect and utilize as they prepare for the regular season.

In the same way coaches and players detail their every move on the football field, several Bay Area football writers have broken down the game tape with an eye on who stood out Saturday night against the Texans.

Morning Tailgate: Aug. 17

Posted by Taylor Price on August 17, 2012 – 10:31 AM

Jim Harbaugh doesn’t subscribe to the “breaking camp” theory. Although there won’t be a practice today, the 49ers will conduct a “Mock Game” before departing to Houston for the team’s first preseason road trip.

To get you ready for San Francisco’s matchup with the Texans, check out our latest Niner Talk podcast which features interviews with quarterback Scott Tolzien and Drew Dougherty of Houston Texans TV.

Tolzien discussed Randy Moss’ positive influence on the locker room, as well as his mindset heading into an important preseason game. Tolzien said it’s all about maximizing opportunities. Dougherty also gave perspective on the opponent’s side of things and said the team’s fans are very friendly when it comes to tailgating. In you’re in Houston for the game, put on a smile and they’ll likely pass you some grub.

As for the current state of the 49ers, ESPN.com’s Mike Sando recently filed his Camp Confidential report on the recent developments in Santa Clara.

Sando asks if the strides shown by the 49ers passing game last season were only the start of something greater.

“That question ran through my mind while watching Smith fire passes on time and on target during a recent three-day stay at 49ers training camp. The answer became clearer every time Smith connected with newcomers Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, which was frequently. He appeared more accurate, more confident and more in command than I can ever recall seeing Smith during a training camp — or any other time, for that matter.”

Morning Tailgate: Aug. 15

Posted by Taylor Price on August 15, 2012 – 9:25 AM

The ball rarely touched the ground at Tuesday’s 49ers training camp practice. Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick had strong showings passing the football throughout the afternoon session.

The impressive display was the best passing performance ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando has seen all training camp from the four teams in the division. Because of the deep passes Smith completed to new wideouts Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, Sando believes the 49ers offense can showcase more of the passing game in 2012.

Vic Fangio Wants More from First D

Posted by Taylor Price on August 13, 2012 – 12:56 PM

The San Francisco 49ers first-team defense allowed six points in two series of action Friday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

The 49ers won, 17-6, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio wasn’t pleased with seeing his starters allow 59- and 68-yard scoring drives that were the only points allowed in the team’s preseason opener.

“We didn’t play as well we’re capable of playing in those first two series,” Fangio said bluntly on Monday.

Christian Ponder’s 52-yard passing play on the opening drive was a result of a “busted coverage” according to Fangio.

Morning Tailgate: June 12

Posted by Taylor Price on June 12, 2012 – 10:03 AM

The 49ers mandatory three-day minicamp begins today, signaling the start of the team’s final on-field work prior to training camp.

Similar to Organized Team Activities, the minicamp will involve the same non-contact principles as the previous stages of the offseason program. Team and 7-on-7 periods are permitted, one-on-one pass-rushing battles, however, will have to wait until training camp.

49ers.com will have extended minicamp coverage throughout the week, but before camp begins, let’s take a look at the top team-related headlines.

Morning Tailgate: June 4

Posted by Taylor Price on June 4, 2012 – 8:03 AM

One of the San Francisco 49ers’ quietest, but perhaps, most crucial offseason additions, wide receiver Mario Manningham, enjoyed some well-deserved time in the spotlight over the weekend.

Dan Brown of The San Jose Mercury News recently spoke with the former New York Giants wideout, who signed a two-year contract with the 49ers shortly into the free agency signing period following a dominant 2011 postsesaon. With an assist from the team’s video director Michael Bracken, Manningham and Brown discussed the athletic, play-making receiver’s 38-yard catch in last year’s Super Bowl, one that set up the game’s go-ahead touchdown.

“I don’t ignore it,” Manningham told Brown. “I know what I did: I won a Super Bowl with a nice catch. But I’m trying to get another one, man.”

Roster Full of Harbaugh College Connections

Posted by Alex Espinoza on May 31, 2012 – 11:47 AM

When the 49ers began crafting their 90-man roster following the draft in late April, it was littered with connections from Jim Harbaugh’s college days. Among the familiar faces recently added this offseason was linebacker Eric Bakhtiari, who earned a tryout for the rookie minicamp and was signed to a two-year deal shortly thereafter.

Though he’s only played in three NFL games, making six special teams tackles in 2009 with the Tennessee Titans, Bakhtiari knows the league well  having bounced around on several practice squads.

“San Francisco, San Diego, Tampa, Tennessee, Miami, Cleveland, Kansas City,” Bakhtiari said. “I think that’s it.”
