The 13th Annual 49ers Winter Fest is in full swing at Lake Tahoe.

The fun-filled weekend got off to a great start on Thursday when families of players, coaches and guests of the 49ers Foundation arrived and took part in a lively welcome reception. Winter Fest marks one of the biggest annual events for the 49ers Foundation, as last year’s gathering raised more than $1 million for local causes in the Bay Area.

Following the reception on Thursday, members of the Gold Rush also treated kids and adults alike to a fun night of s’mores by the fire pit.

Friday got off to a rousing start as long snapper Brian Jennings held an intense early-morning yoga session for a group of brave Winter Fest attendees including former 49ers quarterback Steve Bono. Jennings has been teaching yoga for a few years and was happy to share the experience with new friends.

“I had a great class,” Jennings said. “Enthusiastic crew, the room was nice and warm. We got the music cranking and we did yoga poses, it was great.”

Up next, former Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi joined dozens of people on the ice for a morning skating session.

“I was honored to be invited up here to be a part of the festivities,” Yamaguchi said. “It’s just been an all-around amazing weekend. And you feel good having fun, because you know it’s going to a great cause to support the 49ers Foundation.”

After the guests were served a hearty lunch on the sun-splashed patio next to the ice rink, broomball took center stage. With former NHL player Bret Hedican on hand, fullback Bruce Miller and running back Anthony Dixon joined kids and parents in an entertaining broomball game that featured people falling left and right.

Miller had a particularly spectacular fall, throwing his broom about 15 feet in the air as he dropped to his back.

“I don’t spend a lot of time on ice in general,” Miller said. “I have a newfound respect for hockey players and what they do out there on the ice. That’s pretty impressive.”

Miller and Dixon were teammates for the competition, but they were also vying for the title of best broomballer on the 49ers.

“Am I the greatest broomball player on the Niners?” Miller said. “There was only two of us and I think I edged Anthony out in broomballing.”

Upon hearing Miller’s assessment, Dixon happily defended his broomball game.

“Bruce did score, but I had saves,” Dixon said after spending a good part of the game between the pipes as a goalie. “So that kind of evens out, if you ask me. I also was a physical presence and I moved without the ball. I almost checked a couple people, I grabbed a couple guys.”

The afternoon featured simultaneous events at the Resort at Squaw Creek. While Miller, Dixon, Iupati, Jennings and coaches Jim Tomsula and Reggie Davis taught an eager group of youngsters during Football 101, 49ers alumni Keena Turner, Guy McIntryre, Steve Bono, J.J. Stokes, Dennis Brown and Greg Clark shared stories from their playing days in a fireside chat.

At Football 101, the players and coaches went over the basics of ball carrying and pass-catching before the room was converted into a makeshift football field for drills.

“You might think everyone is just running around out there during a football game,” Tomsula told his pupils. “The part everyone doesn’t get is just how smart you have to be.”

Meanwhile, the alumni fireside chat featured many anecdotes from the players’ rookie seasons. Stokes had a humorous recollection of his first time in the wide receiver meeting room with the 49ers, alongside players like Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens.

“I get in the big meeting room and everyone has an assigned seat,” Stokes said. “Rookies don’t know this, so I just sit in a seat. Then they go, ‘Get up, rook, leave.’ After I got up about 10 times, I found out I was in the seat right in front of the coaches. That was my first experience.”

Those two events were followed up by two more simultaneous ones, as the adults mixed wine and were judged by a panel and kids went downstairs for cupcake tasting.

Well, perhaps it wouldn’t be accurate to say it was just kids at the cupcake tasting. Iupati, Miller, Dixon, Scott Tolzien and Yamaguchi also tried out the sweets. Each participant was given five cupcakes from nearby Batch Cupcakery and asked to guess the flavors.

“I tried the first one it was a vanilla kind,” Iupati said. “The second one, she said was red velvet, but it seemed like it was chocolate to me. My favorite so far is No. 1, the vanilla one.”

But the highlight of the event came when Miller posed with a group of five youngsters for a picture, before they smashed five cupcakes on to his face.

For the wine mixing event, the drinks were blended with a mix of Syrah and Grenache-based wines. The six-person panel of judges for the wine mixes included General Manager Trent Baalke and Jenna and Mara York, but they were split 3-3 on which was better, the Syrah or Grenache.

“I can be bought,” Baalke joked to the crowd.

So 49ers Co-Chairman Dr. John York was called in to be the seventh, tie-breaking judge.

“The Grenache,” he declared.

Friday night’s schedule includes more wine tasting, dinner and two auctions, before rockstar juggler Mike Price closes out the night.

Stay tuned to 49ers.com for more coverage of 2013 Winter Fest throughout the weekend.

The longest tenured member of the San Francisco 49ers joined us for this week’s Niner Talk podcast.

Brian Jennings, a two-time Pro Bowl long snapper in his 13 seasons in San Francisco, checked in this week to discuss a number of topics near and dear to the specialist’s heart.

Sunday night’s road matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, Jennings’ passion for yoga and golf, plus his thoughts on having Christmas at home this year – were all discussed in the lengthy interview with the 49ers long snapper.

For the Seattle Seahawks perspective, we welcomed back Clare Farnsworth, lead writer for Seahawks.com, to hear his thoughts on Russell Wilson’s development, the status of Richard Sherman and key storylines to track on Sunday night.

Click here to listen to the Niner Talk podcast, which is also available on our 49ers Gameday live App.

Here are some of the highlights from both interviews.

BRIAN JENNINGS

[1:00 – Jennings’ thoughts on Sunday’s opportunity to repeat as division champs.]

“Coming off a big win at New England, it was a long trip. We have to recover. We have to get healthy, get fresh. I particularly noticed yesterday I was a little fatigued for a Wednesday. I was feeling pretty run down from the long trip and so I made a point of making sure I took care of myself in these next couple of days, work out and get ready to go. I think when we play good football, we’re tough to beat. We have to make sure we need to get back to where we need to be. I think our plan is going in and I trust our coaches, they come up with good plans every week. So we need to regroup, go out there and give it our best.”

[9:50 – Jennings’ thoughts on having Christmas off this season.]

“Being a professional football player, our priorities are very much on preparing for the next game. Even during the holiday season, often during seasons we’ll practice on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day. We’ll play on Christmas Day whenever it falls. This is a unique schedule for the guys in the NFL. We’re tremendously blessed to be in the NFL, but it’s definitely a huge sacrifice. When you understand the meaning of Christmas and what it means to your family, the sacrifices my family makes is giving me up on those days. They understand this is the job we signed up for, it’s not for everybody. It’s a huge sacrifice that needs to be acknowledged. This year, having my two boys, my beautiful bride on Christmas Day, hopefully we’ll get as much time off as possible on Tuesday. I can imagine that we’d be able to get quite a few hours off on this one. It’s a tremendous blessing. We’re excited to spend this holiday season together, that’s really what it’s about for me – seeing the look on my little boys’ faces and the joy in my wife’s eyes when we spend time together.”

CLARE FARNSWORTH

[13:50 – Farnsworth’s thoughts on Seattle and San Francisco continuing the trend of NFL teams going to young quarterbacks right away.]

“It’s funny. All the talk Week 7 was about defense because the offenses weren’t doing all that much. ‘How are they going to score any points? How are they going to generate any offense?’ Well now, both offenses have matured and progressed over the season. Now it’s kind of like, ‘How are these defenses going to stop these guys?’ When they drafted Russell in the third-round a lot of people were wondering what they were doing here and then when Pete Carroll named him the starter over Matt Flynn, it was, ‘What are we doing here?’ We’re now seeing what they’re doing here. They’ve started to run zone-read stuff with Wilson midway through the season and he’s shown he can do more that they’re allowing him to do it. The success of the zone-read was really apparent in the win over the Buffalo Bills because when the quarterback is faking to a back like Marshawn Lynch, you could see the Bills defenders leaning in that direction. They didn’t want Lynch to gash them, which allowed Wilson to pull the ball and look for lanes. It’s been really effective, no more so than the win over the Bills in Toronto. Wilson ran for three touchdowns and was not touched on any of them. That’s been a huge development for the Seahawks.”

[23:20 – Farnsworth’s key to beating the 49ers.]

“The key thing here is Frank Gore. When the Seahawks have been able to limit him, they’ve been able to beat the 49ers. When he gets some long runs, a lot of carries, a lot of yards against them, they’ve had a hard time beating this team. Once again, that remains a huge factor in this game especially because it’s going to be played in the loudest outdoor stadium in the league. It’s not just hype; it’s a reality that. Kaepernick is going to find out about it.”

Brian Jennings is the lone 49ers player left from San Francisco’s 2002 squad. It’s worth noting because the two-time Pro Bowl long snapper is the sole leftover from one of the greatest moments in Candlestick Park’s history, the team’s 39-38 epic comeback win over the New York Giants in the NFC’s Wild Card Playoffs.

The game dubbed, “Giant Comeback” is one of several Candlestick Park moments being voted on this month by the team’s Faithful fans. The 49ers are looking for the Greatest Candlestick Park Moments at FarewellCandlestick.com, a voting site presented by SAP.

“It was big for us at the time to do that with that group of players,” Jennings recalled of the amazing come-from-behind win over the Giants.

Other than the game’s frantic ending which included a non-pass interference call on the 49ers and an errant field goal snap on the last play of the game, Jennings remembered the calm atmosphere on the home sideline that day.

“We were losing, but nobody on our team thought we were out of it,” Jennings said, despite facing a 38-14 disadvantage. “It was a weird situation where it didn’t seem to be going our way, but it didn’t bother us.”

With Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia making clutch plays and Bryant Young and the 49ers defense forcing New York to much-needed punts in the second half, San Francisco rallied with 25-unanswered points to win the playoff game, before losing the next week to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“When we started coming, we kept going,” Jennings said of the comeback rally. “It was a weird situation where we were getting beat soundly, but it didn’t bother us. It almost seemed like a natural order – this is the way it’s supposed to go.”

In all of Jennings’ 205 career games, the wild win over New York stands out as one of the best moments in his playing career.

“I think that was one of the bigger games we had played there,” Jennings said. “It was exciting, a fun game to be a part of. It was early in my career, exciting, big-game and I got to be Jeremy Shockey that week in practice.”

Jennings also received a game ball for his Shockey impersonations that week of practice.

It’s officially voting season for NFL fans.

As of early Tuesday morning, polls are open for fans to select players to the 2013 Pro Bowl, set to be played on Sunday, January 27, 2013 from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Vote as many times as you’d like from now until Dec. 17. The results will be announced Dec. 26 at 4 p.m. PT on NFL Network’s “Total Access.”

This year, the San Francisco have many deserving candidates worthy of inclusion on the Pro Bowl roster. Eight players represented the 49ers in last season’s All-Star game. Currently, 13 players have Pro Bowl experience (David Akers, Leonard Davis, Vernon Davis, Dashon Goldson, Jonathan Goodwin, Frank Gore, Brian Jennings, Andy Lee, Randy Moss, Carlos Rogers, Justin Smith, Joe Staley and Patrick Willis).

The AFC and NFC All-Star squads are based on the consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counts one-third toward determining the 43-man rosters that represent the American Football Conference and National Football Conference in the Pro Bowl. NFL players and coaches will cast their votes on December 20-21.

The NFL is the only sports league that combines voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its All-Star teams. It was the first professional sports league to offer online all-star voting in 1995.

Last year, Staley put together a classic episode of “The Joe Show” with several NFC standouts.

The San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings are relatively familiar with each other from already squaring off in Week 1 of the preseason.

The 49ers won a 17-6 matchup at Candlestick Park that saw first-team players play limited snaps on both sides of the ball. The Vikings were also without the services of All-World running back Adrian Peterson, who’s coming off an ACL tear suffered last Christmas Eve.

Peterson didn’t play against the 49ers in the preseason. Former Jim Harbaugh-coached running back Toby Gerhart racked up 31 yards on five carries, including a 16-yard gain.

Minnesota, however, now has Peterson back in action and looking very close to his old self. Peterson has 144 rushing yards and two touchdowns this season and could have an even greater workload this week according to Vikings coach Leslie Frazier.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee shared Frazier’s comments on Peterson’s health improvements when the Vikings coach conducted a conference call with the Bay Area media.

“Frazier said he’s been checking in regularly with Peterson to gauge his soreness and overall condition after recent games,” Barrows wrote.

According to Frazier, Peterson feels much better at this point in the week than he did after the team’s first regular season game. The Vikings coach expects Peterson’s workload to increase against the 49ers.

ESPN.com’s Mike Sando released his MVP watch list with Alex Smith ranking at the No. 2 spot behind Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. Sando: “Smith ranks second only to Ryan in success rate, defined as percentage of place meeting accepted benchmarks for success (gaining 45 percent of the necessary yards on first down, 60 percent of them on second down and 100 percent on third and fourth downs). Like Ryan, Smith has zero turnovers through two games. Despite taking seven sacks, Smith ranks second only to Ryan in QBR among quarterbacks with enough attempts to qualify. He’s at 81.9 out of 100 after finishing last season ranked 22nd at 45.8. (Fifty is average, suggesting the 49ers won largely for factors beyond QB production.)”

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reviewed the 49ers offensive and defensive performances from a 27-19 win over Detroit.

NFL.com offers the best Instagram photos from Week 2, including a great shot of Vernon Davis leaping over photographers in the end zone.

Brian Jennings was thrilled to beat the Detroit Lions this past Sunday night, but it wasn’t his best news of the day.

Hours after the 49ers improved to 2-0 on the season, the 49ers long snapper’s wife Nicole went into labor and gave birth to couple’s second son, Max, at 2:11 Monday morning.

Like a good husband and father, Jennings raced over to the hospital like he was covering an Andy Lee punt.

“The dude wanted to come out for the victory party,” offered Jennings, the longest-tenured 49ers player, now in his 13th season with the team that picked him in the seventh round of the 2000 NFL Draft.

Jennings joked that because of the well-known short window to celebrate NFL victories, Max Joseph Jennings made his way into the world at the perfect time.

“We got six hours to celebrate each win,” Jennings said, “so we had to get it into that window.”

Jennings said Nicole and Max are doing well ever since the birth. The 49ers long snapper will be picking them up from the hospital following his Tuesday responsibilities at team headquarters.

“It’s awesome,” Jennings said of having a second son to join his other boy, Jackson. “We’re fired up.”

With the boys being two years apart, Jennings said he already has 49ers baby gear for Max to wear this week. Jennings and members of the team’s equipment staff put together a miniature car for the Jennings boys to enjoy. The goal, according to the long snapper, was to give Jackson a car to push Max around the house.

The 49ers are all excited about a 2-0 start with wins over the 2011 playoff teams, but the team’s long snapper might just have it better than anyone else.

Who’s got it better than Jennings?

“NOBODY!” he said emphatically.

The NFL received a wake-up call on Monday night during the Raiders-Chargers matchup in Oakland. Long snapper is often regarded as an under-the-radar position in the NFL, but when Oakland Pro Bowler Jon Condo went out with an injury, the art of long snapping was put on center stage.

Travis Goethel was pressed into emergency long-snapping duty and had trouble finding punter Shane Lechler with consistency, showing how crucial the position can be. On Tuesday, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh told KNBR that second-year lineman Daniel Kilgore is the team’s second-string long snapper behind veteran Brian Jennings.

“You’ve always got to be ready at any position if you’re a backup,” Kilgore said. “You go in through the week and you practice and you get your reps in, so you just have to be ready for whenever the situation comes.”

In its no-stone-left-unturned approach, the 49ers coaching staff has Kilgore practice his long snapping on a daily basis. But as Kilgore pointed out, getting a punt off in time is a team-wide job.

“Everybody wants to blame the guy for the bad snaps that hit the ground and everything,” Kilgore said. “But what about the tackle that missed the block? It’s not just the bad snaps, there’s 11 guys on the field that have a job.”

Kilgore and linebacker Larry Grant split duties as emergency long snapper last year, but were never pressed into duty. Jennings, who at 13 years of service is the longest-tenured player on the 49ers, has established himself as one of the game’s most effective long snappers throughout his career.

“It’s extremely difficult,” Jennings said. “Our job is to make it look easy.”

There are several nuances that go along with Jennings’ specialized position. For one, the kicker balls used in the game are much slicker than the footballs players practice with throughout the week.

“The K-ball rules make it a completely different animal than what you snap in practice,” Jennings said. “For a rookie snapper or a young snapper or a backup to go in and snap the ball effectively, it’s a really tough challenge.”

Not only that, but long snappers must be sharp with their stance, their hand placement and their release point. As football fans found out on Monday night, long snappers have no room for error.

“There’s a lot of different things that can happen,” Jennings said.

The 49ers mandatory three-day minicamp begins today, signaling the start of the team’s final on-field work prior to training camp.

Similar to Organized Team Activities, the minicamp will involve the same non-contact principles as the previous stages of the offseason program. Team and 7-on-7 periods are permitted, one-on-one pass-rushing battles, however, will have to wait until training camp.

49ers.com will have extended minicamp coverage throughout the week, but before camp begins, let’s take a look at the top team-related headlines.

ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando takes a look at the rosters of every team in the division and notes that the 49ers have a division-high 11 players with one or more Pro Bowl appearances. The list includes: David Akers, Andy Lee, Brian Jennings, Patrick Willis, Justin Smith, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Joe Staley, Dashon Goldson, Carlos Rogers, and Jonathan Goodwin. (Update: wide receiver Randy Moss and long snapper Brian Pontbriand also have multiple Pro Bowl appearances).

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee offers various notes from the 49ers play count numbers from 2011. Barrows: “Only one player, Isaac Sopoaga, played all three phases of the game. Interestingly Colin Jones, who is listed as a safety, played one offensive snap but zero defensive snaps.”

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle checks in with outside linebacker Eric Bakhtiari, who worked out over the offseason with Green Bay Packers Pro Bowler Clay Matthews. Branch: “Bakhtiari, 27, has logged time on the practice squads of seven teams since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2008. Two years ago, he appeared on five teams’ practice squads, an odyssey that included his second stint with the 49ers. This offseason, with his practice-squad eligibility used up, the Burlingame native decided to alter his offseason workout program. Why? Obviously, he said, his standard routine wasn’t working.”

Safety Donte Whitner recently joined CSN’s Chronicle Live to discuss San Francisco’s defensive outlook for 2012.

Carl Steward of The San Jose Mercury News shares the story of 49ers fan Dennis Miller’s quest to win the 2012 U.S. Open as a tournament qualifier.

Lastly, Patrick Willis hosted his first annual football camp over the weekend and 49ers.com was there to document the experience.

Bay Area media attended Tuesday’s and provided several details from the voluntary workout. Without wasting time, let’s get right to the “deets” as the beat writers like to say.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com passes along notes, including insight on a two-minute drill that concluded practice. Maiocco: “Quarterback Alex Smith hit Randy Moss on a 45-yard pass down the right sideline against unsuspecting rookie cornerback Deante’ Purvis. Moss gave no indication the ball was en route and Purvis never turned around as Moss gently reached up to catch the pass and stepped out of bounds. The 49ers’ first-team offense scored on Smith’s short-pass to Kyle Williams on fourth down.”

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, writes that Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree and Kyle Williams have been the best-looking wide receivers in the offseason. Barrows: “Williams looked quick and fluid last year. If it’s possible, he looks more so this year. Having said that, first-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins appears decidedly more comfortable than he did during the rookie minicamp three weeks ago. He made a nice diving catch in traffic on a throw from Scott Tolzien during 7-on-7 drills.”

Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News shares his notes and quotes from practice, too. Inman: “ Odd scene: Patrick Willis returning a kickoff. No, seriously, he did. But don’t make anything more of it than a fun sideshow on a May day.”

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

According to Inman, backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick is most eager to get preseason games underway. The second-year signal caller said he’s “leaps and bounds” from where he was last offseason.

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle details the snapping competition that’s taking place this summer between Brian Jennings and free agent addition Brian Pontbriand. Branch: “If 49ers long snapper Brian Jennings plays in his 13th straight full season in 2012, he will tie the franchise record for consecutive games played with 208.”

Branch also shares the comments from running back Brandon Jacobs, who’s looking to play under 260 pounds for the first time in his NFL career.

CSNBayArea.com provides video of Jacobs’ conversation with the press.

Branch also details the comments of cornerback Tarell Brown, who aims to lead the NFL in interceptions this coming season. Branch: “Cornerback Tarell Brown is so confident he’ll make a big impression this year, he’s betting a game check on it. The 49ers starter tweeted recently that he’ll donate a game’s worth of salary to one of his three foundations if he doesn’t win land in next year’s Pro Bowl. That’s quite a statement for only a second-year starter.”

CSNBayArea.com provides video of Brown’s comments.

ESPN’s NFL Live panel recently discussed the NFC West division in a one-hour special. Catch the re-air this Saturday at 5:30 a.m. PT on ESPN2 (DVR alert).

Sam Monson of ProFootballFocus.com lists Patrick Willis as the ideal prototype for a 3-4 inside linebacker.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com lists Vernon Davis and Andy Lee as the third-best performers at tight end and special teams, respectively. Jeremiah on Davis: “There were several excellent candidates for this final spot. Veterans like Jason Witten, Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gatescontinue to perform at a high level, while the league is loaded with athletic youngsters at the position like Aaron Hernandez,Brandon Pettigrew and Jermichael Finley. However, several of the coaches and executives I spoke with voiced very strong support for Davis. His numbers might trail some of the other superstars’ marks, but he is a more dynamic and explosive threat in the passing game. During the 49ers’ postseason run, he caught 10 balls for 292 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 29.2 yards per catch (!). If Davis had the luxury of playing in a pass-first offense with a top-tier quarterback, he would post numbers similar to those accumulated by Gronkowski and Graham.”

Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News lists Aldon Smith among his top 10 outside linebackers in the game today.

Lastly, 49ers.com’s OTA coverage included: A.J.
