Posted by Taylor Price on September 7, 2012 – 1:54 PM

The San Francisco 49ers know the challenge that lies ahead.

The Green Bay Packers have won 19 of their last 20 games at famous Lambeau Field. The 49ers hope to end the streak this Sunday when the team’s meet at 1:25 p.m. PT.

“My favorite thing is to watch our guys compete on Sundays,” said coach Jim Harbaugh on Friday following his team’s final day of preparations in the Bay Area.

Harbaugh was pleased with the week of practice from his 49ers players and coaches.

Morning Tailgate: Aug. 24

Posted by Taylor Price on August 24, 2012 – 9:38 AM

The 49ers players have the day off, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be heard from this Friday on 49ers.com.

Our latest Niner Talk podcast features an interview with starting cornerback Tarell Brown who discussed the team’s Sunday preseason contest against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. Brown said the first-team defense is excited for the challenge and as always, looking to hit everything moving.

The interview also covered Brown’s road trip necessities which included Welch’s fruit snacks and a round neck pillow for long cross-country naps. Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, a writer frequently linked in the Morning Tailgate, also joined the latest podcast to discuss 49ers storylines heading into Week 3 of the preseason and the frontrunners for his yearly “Iron Bee” award.

Morning Tailgate: Aug. 21

Posted by Taylor Price on August 21, 2012 – 9:58 AM

First-round draft pick A.J. Jenkins continues to progress leading up to the regular season. Jenkins’ 32-yard reception against the Houston Texans last week was the 49ers’ longest passing play of the preseason.

Furthermore, the No. 30 overall selection got behind the Texans defense several times last Saturday night and could have produced even greater numbers if not for a few overthrown passes in the second half.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee recently wrote about Jenkins’ promising big-play potential and discussed the receiver’s progress with fifth-year quarterback Josh Johnson who completed the 32-yard pass to Jenkins in the third quarter of a 20-9 defeat.

“Johnson said the rookie did a great job of ‘holding the red line,’ an imaginary line on the side of the field between receiver and sideline that gives the quarterback a few yards of cushion in which to place the ball,” Barrows wrote. “Johnson lofted the pass into that zone, and Jenkins detached from the defensive back in time to make a 32-yard reception.”

Morning Tailgate: Aug. 20

Posted by Taylor Price on August 20, 2012 – 10:42 AM

The reviews are in. The 49ers have finished a second preseason game, a 20-9 defeat to the Houston Texans, and there’s been plenty of time to break down the action ever since thanks to NFL’s Preseason Live.

The 49ers had bright spots in defeat, but there’s always room for improvement. In reality, the best thing for the players is having more game tape to dissect and utilize as they prepare for the regular season.

In the same way coaches and players detail their every move on the football field, several Bay Area football writers have broken down the game tape with an eye on who stood out Saturday night against the Texans.

Jonathan Goodwin: “Guys Are Working Hard”

Posted by Jacob Most on August 2, 2012 – 2:18 PM

For a team that was just one game away from the Super Bowl a season ago, much of the attention thus far at 49ers Training Camp presented by HP has been focused on whether offseason offensive additions can push the team over the top.

Before many of those acquisitions can contribute in a regular season game, things start in the trenches at training camp. Center Jonathan Goodwin can attest. The 10-year veteran won a Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints and sees similarities in 2012 at 49ers camp like the one he experienced in 2009 when the Saints won it all.

Physical practices set the tone. With the 49ers, Goodwin sees Jim Harbaugh and the coaching staff utilizing a physical approach early in camp.

Players like Goodwin expect that physicality to pay off long-term.

Morning Tailgate: July 31

Posted by Taylor Price on July 31, 2012 – 9:25 AM

Players have the day off, but that’s not stopping them from coming into the facility to work out. Donte Whitner just tweeted that he’s headed into 4949 Centennial Blvd. and doesn’t expect to be alone.

The 49ers have gone through two padded practices, the second of which on Monday, resulted in several highlights from both the offense and the defense. In some cases, defensive players were making plays for both sides of the ball. So far, the 49ers have built strong camaraderie in camp. Take a look at the image atop this blog, two newcomers Brandon Jacobs and Leonard Davis, are already embracing each other before the start of practice like they’ve been teammates for years. Surely, they enjoyed the physical day at 49ers Training Camp presented by HP.

More on Monday’s camp standouts and the latest 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Morning Tailgate: July 30

Posted by Taylor Price on July 30, 2012 – 9:01 AM

Real football, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman, began on Sunday for the San Francisco 49ers. Pads were out in full-effect, as evidenced by All-Pro defensive tackle Justin Smith consistent manhandling of opposing offensive linemen.

Smith’s dominance was noted extensively by CSNBayArea.com’s Matt Maiocco and Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.

Other Sunday practice reports focused on the production of the team’s young wide receivers. After Jim Harbaugh defended A.J. Jenkins’ performance with the club this offseason, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reviewed the first-rounder’s first day with the pads and added this note on another young 49ers wideout: “Nathan Palmer, undrafted out of Northern Illinois, continues to impress and made several nice grabs today, starting with one against Carlos Rogers in one-on-one, press-coverage drills.”

No need to fear on this Friday the 13th, 49ers left tackle Joe Staley announced via twitter that his hit TV49 show, The Joe Show, would be returning for the 2012 season.

Will fans be treated to more sing-a-long episodes? More episodes about end zone dance moves? Or maybe Staley will get suited up like he did in one of my favorite episodes, The Joe Show: High School Prom. Stay tuned to 49ers.com find out.

Morning Tailgate: July 12

Posted by Taylor Price on July 12, 2012 – 8:45 AM

And the ESPY goes to…

The 49ers (and Saints) for a remarkable NFL Divisional Playoff game. The 49ers were victorious 36-32 that day, and were rewarded again last night at the 2012 ESPYs.

Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis accepted the honor on behalf of the team and were joined on stage by Jimmy Murphy, a young boy battling cystic fibrosis. According to a tweet from ESPN’s Josh Krulewitz (discovered by Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News) Davis met Murphy before the award show, saw his “Make-A-Wish” button, and asked Murphy to sit with him for the show.

On stage, Davis thanked the 49ers Faithful, teammates, coaches, CEO Jed York and his quarterback, Alex Smith.

After the acceptance speech, Davis, Willis, Murphy and award presenter Joel McHale posed for photos in the ESPY photo booth. (Sorry Joel, we all know who that is on the right side of the picture.)

The NFL dominated the ESPYs last night, winning multiple categories throughout the evening.

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Morning Tailgate: July 11

Posted by Taylor Price on July 11, 2012 – 9:57 AM

It’s safe to assume that the 49ers Faithful had a hand in stuffing ballots for members of the San Francisco Giants to start in last night’s All-Star Game. So with that assumption in mind, the folks here at Goal Posts would like to say – nice work everyone – give yourselves a hand… The National League won 8-0 giving San Francisco another opportunity to potentially host the World Series.

Tonight is unique in that it’s the only night with no major sporting events taking place. Instead, the collective sports world will turn to the 2012 ESPY Awards which airs tonight at 6 p.m. PT on ESPN. If you haven’t heard, the 49ers Divisional Playoff win over the New Orleans Saints is one of three nominees in the “Best Game” category. There’s still time to vote before the start of tonight’s show. CLICK HERE TO VOTE!

Tune in tonight to see if San Francisco takes home the honor.

As for the current state of the franchise, NFL Network analysts Willie McGinest and Warren Sapp recently discussed the biggest question marks of all NFC West teams heading into training camp. For Sapp, San Francisco’s biggest question mark is whether or not the defensive unit can maintain its health and dominant play from 2011. McGinest, on the other hand, wondered if the offense would be able to fully showcase new perimeter weapons that were added in the offseason.

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.
