MT: Kaepernick Builds His Brand

Posted by Taylor Price on May 23, 2013 – 10:08 AM

Colin Kaepernick keeps building his understanding of the 49ers offense at the team’s Organized Team Activities. Off the field, Kaepernick is growing his marketing appeal.

Months removed from a Super Bowl appearance, the 49ers quarterback has been racking up endorsement deals. Kaepernick’s commercial appeal was the recent subject of a Forbes.com piece.

Kaepernick, however, is not mixing publicity with football. The 49ers quarterback has been “sharp” this offseason according to his coach, Jim Harbaugh.

“He’s been really strong,” the 49ers coach told reporters on Wednesday. “Running the offense, throwing the ball extremely well. He’s in great physical shape with a total command of the offense.”

Kevin Lynch of the San Francisco Chronicle shared six ramifications of Michael Crabtree’s injury.

Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News offered OTA notes.

Steve Corkran of the San Jose Mercury News shared Harbaugh’s outlook at being involved with the Indy 500.

Rael Enteen of CSNBayArea.com discussed Quinton Patton’s comments on Crabtree and Kaepernick.

49ers.com recapped the OTA workout open to the media, Harbaugh’s comments on Crabtree, plus caught up with second-year running back LaMichael James.

Aweful high praise for Kaepernick and Crabs from Harbaugh!! He has “really” liked Crabs from the first and Crabs started to show why once Kaep got in there!! Receivers are going to be lining up over the next couple of years just to get a chance to play catch with Colin!!! Yardage totals will be going way up from over the last 10yrs.

kap has little to prove except to the guys who cant get over the way “alex smith was treated”,,,the 49ers treated alex VERY fairly, they kept him around when THE ENTIRE fan base was screaming for him to be cut, helped him ressurct his career and then traded him to a team that he can start for,,,its the colin kaepernick show now and if you cant embrace it then your not truely a fan, no one player is bigger than the team, no one liked it when joe was traded, and everyone hated on young,,things turned out alright, just like they will now

sorry im not a blind follower
if we ask a simple question
like if crab had been training hard this offseason like running up a sand hill aka jerry rice would we be talking about yet another preseason injury to crab ?
    i think not

So Rice never got injured now? This is what I see and hear from certain “idiots” on these blogs and we all know who they are. They once predicted something like “Crabtree is a bust” or “Alex will win us a SB” or a number of different predictions to that effect and when there is a opportunity to make themselves & others feel like they were right, they jump all over an innocent player to help their ego and their” its all about me” mentality. Why oh why are there so many insecure dumb people in this world? So now all the people who called Crabtree a bust at one time are gonna gun him down with every opportunity for getting hurt. He was huge for us last year and had as good a run in the last half of our year as anybody in the NFL. But now you gonna take shots. People like that are pathetic “fans” just like the ones taking shots at Kap because we did not win the SB? Nevermind all the other causes for losing. They made excuses for Alex but absolutely not for Kap. WTF is wrong with people?

Well said 49erdefense2012. Alex was traded to a team where he has a chance to start and for a coach who will bring out his best. He is getting paid great and even he has no hard feelings and knew deep down Kap was going to be the future when he came to the team just like Joe knew of Young and Favre knew of Rogers. Thats the NFL. I personally like Alex and do not take shots at him. He was good and did good for us and even I wondered if it was the right move at first but time showed that I was wrong and I am big enough to admit and did change my attitude to Kap is the guy for now and the future. I am not just gonna beat on the other guy because they both deserve respect for what they have done. Alex & Kap have both given us our best and coach believes in Kap more and did the right thing instead of letting Alex pine away on the bench. People need to get over their egos and be a true fan rooting for the guys fighting and playing for us. Thats what it is about. These guys don’t deserve you taking shots just cuz you said it was the wrong move or a guy was going to be a bust. Its not about your ego! Get over yourself and move on.

How many Super Bowls did the 49ers win with Joe Montana?

How many Super Bowls did the 49ers win with Steve Young?

Was Young good enough to fill Montana’s shoes? Would the 49ers have won more Super Bowls if Montana had remained?

Never mind that Young didn’t replace Montana in the middle of a 6-2 season. Montana hadn’t started a game for almost two complete seasons. By the time Montana was healthy again, the offense had been reworked around Young’s skill set.

I don’t approve of a comparison between Joe Montana and Alex Smith. For one thing, Joe Montana played for an excellent team and an excellent coach from day one. However, comparing Colin Kaepernick to Steve Young is even more idiotic, because regardless of whether the Young decision proved to be the best decision for the 49ers, at least Young won the one Super Bowl he was in.

I’m glad Kap is working really hard to improve but I hate what happened to Crabtree. It’s every teams nightmare to lose their best player due to injury. What stand out to me about Crabtree is his play making ability after the catch. The way he was able to get YAC was incredible to watch. I love his SB 47 highlight where he took 2 hard hit but was able to bounce off that and run for the TD. I remember it well becus I was jumping 3 ft high of the ground straight from my couch watching at home on my TV. lol.

FATAL ERROR says, “However comparing Colin Kaepernick to Steve Young is even more idiotic, because regardless of whether the Young decision proved to be the best decision for the 49ers, at least Young won the one Super Bowl he was in.”

Kap is just getting started. How many heart breaking NFC Championships was he a part of? And in all his years he only got to one SB. Alex got how many…let the excuses come pouring in. Excuses for everyone else except KAP, right?

  60. By phatalerror on May 24, 2013 | Reply

“It’s every teams nightmare to lose their best player due to injury.”

Then it’s a marginally bad dream for the 49ers to lose Crabtree. He’s not even their best receiver, let alone their best player (see Gore, Staley, Iupati, Willis, Justin Smith, Bowman). It just makes dealing with his free agency in 2015 a little easier.

The falloff from Crabtree to Williams or Manningham isn’t exactly precipitous. If other players behind him start getting hurt, there’s a problem. Crabtree’s end of year production was only the result of increased targets and navigating a soft secondary after the catch during the period of time when defenses were trying to figure out whether to shut down Kaepernick’s feet or Kaepernick’s reads. Run-after-the-catch on inside slants and comeback routes is a lot easier when there are three or four in the secondary than when there are five or six. The route running Crabtree wasn’t getting praised for until the middle of last year is also a lot easier when there are fewer and larger seams to run between.

Montana played for an excellent team and an excellent coach.
Young played for an excellent team, excellent coaches and was mentored by Montana.
Smith played for an amorphous 2-14 team with no good coaches, or throwing game talent to speak of, and was mentored by Trent Dilfer. Being self-made, he took years to make progress despite his situation.
Kaepernick played for a 13-3 team that was already 6-2 in the next season, and was mentored by Smith.

Even more idiotic than the notion that Kaepernick could be compared to Young is the notion that six years of bad organization should count against Smith. You make such weak arguments, dave g. Troll-style. You can’t know how Kaepernick would have done in those first six years.

By the way, the same idiots that proclaimed Colin Kaepernick as an 81st-ranked NFL quarterback in the NFL just ranked Russell Wilson as a 51st-ranked NFL quarterback. What are they thinking?, dave g. asks. How does a quarterback that was eliminated in the Divisional Playoff get higher billing than a Super Bowl quarterback?, dave g. asks. Football is a team sport. Russell Wilson took over a 7-9 team and made them a playoff team. Colin Kaepernick took over a 13-3 team and made them… flashier?

Neither of them belong on the list, but Wilson has commendations Kaepernick hasn’t earned yet.

Then I suppose he shouldn’t play so hard. Or maybe his body is just incapable of holding up to him playing hard.

The whole ‘why did it happen?’ discussion is irrelevant. The fact is, Crabtree has been injured more often than not. If he’s nicked up all the time, and can’t play well except against porous secondaries, he fits the definition of First Round Bust perfectly. There is no denying this. If people want to play armchair physical therapist, go ahead, but you’re wasting your time.

It is not arguments. It is exposing holes and inconsistencies in “your arguments”. Thats it!

FATAL ERROR- You the one whining and making excuses over and over again just because KAP is not your guy. I have never slammed Alex. I am merely being sarcastic to point incosistencies in “your arguments”. I liked Young too but the reason we did not win more with Young in my opinion was “mostly” because of Seifert. Those teams were loaded but we could not get past the Cowboys but once. Jimmy Johnson outcoached him. You are obsessed with just going after KAP because his success somehow makes you wrong? And this is your obsession and motivation? So you will pick apart any flaw as if none of the greats had flaws. He is our guy now, like it or not. Quit crying. You really pathetic. KAP does not deserve all this nonsense. You can point to a lot of reasons why we lost the SB but for some reason Alex gets every excuse in the book for 8 years and never getting there but KAP gets zero for falling 5 yards short. I am not slamming Alex in anyway but if that is not blatant bias I am not sure what is!

Perfectly said mfkram64. Especially about “anyone and i mean anyone who played any kind of sport or even excercised knows u can pull something”

It does show how little these losers know and how inactive they have been. At least Crabs is not getting busted for PEDs and as far as DIVA’s, seriously. He holds out like many great atheletes have done and he is tagged as DIVA. We have had T.O., we have seen Ocho, Stevie Johnson, Revis Island, Titus Young? I mean seriously…all you doing is hating with nonsense. Oh yeah Heywood-Bey should have been selected I suppose? When you idiots just don’t like a guy you will say anything. I don’t dislike Alex in anyway and see he did not have the best teams his whole career as I have said many years before but whats done is done and Kap is our future. Move on you whiny b!tches. Geeeez. Just as much as Alex does not deserve to be hated on neither does KAP or Crabs. These guys work hard and have tried hard to get us that title. So because the team falls short or a guy gets hurt now you gonna bash them???? You people are pathetic. We were so incredibly close to winning (one play this way or that way or one tackle) it all but the entire team lost. Just cuz you don’t like a guy you gonna hate on him so you can look right. And throw out hypotheticals as your proof? Thats retarted and I will expose your goofy @ss-its not arguments but exposing you for your biasness.

It’s interesting how I said “The whole ‘why did it happen?’ discussion is irrelevant,” and I was attacked as if I had. But who I was attacked by says everything.

I guess “real fans” side with rookie holdouts now. You know what? Darrelle Revis is the best at his position, and I still think it sucks that he kept holding out. He made more per annum on his pre-holdout years than every 49ers.com forum troll put together, and while I don’t feel sorry for the trolls, I do feel sorry for the legitimate teammates that suffered because their franchise spent a first round pick on a guy that didn’t show up ready to play for a whole season (because after missing all of those OTA’s and practices and six weeks of regular season including the bye week, he wasn’t as good as he should have been).

And after all of the holdout nonsense, he’s persistently affected by nagging injuries.

Bust. It’s not “hating”. It is what it is. The receiver who thought he should have been drafted before any other was good for less than 60 yards a game and crossed the plane twice in his first year. He only started immediately because the rest of the receiver corps that year was awful. If he plays this year at all, he will be deep into his fifth season in the league before ever reaching 3,500 total yards, 25 touchdowns, or 300 receptions.

A “first round talent” with an average production of 700 yards, 60 receptions, and 5 touchdowns a year? Dwayne Bowe accrued better stats in his first four years with the Chiefs, doing so with quarterbacks that went away unwanted. A.J. Green projects to exceed Michael Crabtree’s career stats in all three categories halfway through his third year in the league. Calvin Johnson has produced more yardage, as many touchdowns, and almost as many receptions in just the past two seasons. You’re going to justify a holdout with those comparisons? For whatever I might lack in being ‘unbiased’, you seriously lack perspective.

I’ll take a ‘no’ on Crabtree. He’s not an essential piece of the 49ers’ offense. He never was. Kaepernick can exclusively throw to Boldin instead.

and if you have an opinion that something is less then perfect about our team ofcourse you have the right to say so even you dave, and if you have to talk about people on this site in that manner you have the right to troll, if thats who you are than thats who you are

    agreed

So now ace is gonna be a FATAL ERROR b!tch and start using his “troll” lingo? There is so much more than you giving an opinion but I really don’t even want to watse my time on you. You like a little fly. You simply an idiot. There really is not much else to say on you. Really.

“There is so much more than you giving an opinion but I really don’t even want to watse my time on you. You like a little fly. You simply an idiot. There really is not much else to say on you. Really.”

But you won’t make an effort to give said opinion in a coherent and meaningful way, and yet you’ll still be back here to talk trash and tear down people personally. It is your nature. You are incapable of independent analysis. You are also incapable of civility. Therefore, you are a troll. If you and your friends (who are too busy high-fiving eachother over personal attacks to participate in a reasonable discussion) want to ditch the label before Alex Smith gets to the Super Bowl, you might try working on 1. Logic, and 2. Civility.

It’s somewhat comical to see you get fed up even making personal attacks. I haven’t seen too many tired trolls.

So FATAL ERROR says, “I’ll take a ‘no’ on Crabtree. He’s not an essential piece of the 49ers’ offense. He never was.”

“He never was” is dealing in facts so lets go there. So lets take a look on how “not an essential piece” he was to SF offense last year shall we:

  81. By dave g. on May 24, 2013 | Reply

Crabtree – 19% of offensive yards for SF Offense

  82. By dave g. on May 24, 2013 | Reply

9 TDS (That is 20.4% by the way)

  83. By dave g. on May 24, 2013 | Reply

Interesting what one defines as “essential” and “he never was”. SLAPPED AGAIN B!TCH!!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! freaking amateurs :)

“You are incapable of independent analysis. You are also incapable of civility.”

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I am your worst nightmare and I will continue to expose you for the BS that you are completely filled with.

I am out of here cuz I have a life! Later losers ace (HA!) and FATAL ERROR!

LOL. You would think Blahblahblah would get tired of getting smacked around so much. Its like abuse after abuse after abuse and still comes back for more with lame stuff and takes more and more beatings.

After doubling down again and again on this bet, you’re not going to be able to show yourselves in these forums if things turn out badly for your quarterback.

I would have a hard time showing myself now if I was you. So your statement above proves what you want next year. Pretty sad 49er fan if you ask me.

“I would have a hard time showing myself now if I was you. So your statement above proves what you want next year. Pretty sad 49er fan if you ask me.”

I can root for my team without being confident in the quarterback. That pretty much defined the largely ignorant majority of 49ers fans between the 2008-2010 years. The team is good enough to win despite Kaepernick. I’m less confident that they’re good enough to be in the playoffs next year ahead of the Seahawks.

I won’t sacrifice my certainty about Kaepernick for the sake of your disillusionment with Alex Smith.

phatalerra just may be you have a drug problem like the seachickings are you doing the same thing that they are doing ?……..

“phatalerra just may be you have a drug problem like the seachickings are you doing the same thing that they are doing ?……..”

Worry not. If Kaepernick should fall short of expectations in 2013, I will not:

    1. Accuse you of drug use.
    2. Talk about your mom.
    3. Call you disparaging names.
    4. Bring all of my friends onto the boards to make fun of you.

I will say I told you so. But I won’t repay you with the treatment you have given me. I don’t have to treat other users here with disrespect on the basis that they did so to me.

I dare say some 49ers fans are so fanatic that they dispose of civility when anyone should contradict their views on the state of the 49ers. That is neither justified nor healthy.

    Have a nice day.

  91. By SHIP on May 25, 2013 | Reply

Blahblahblah. You are banking on the 49ers to fall short so you can say “I told you so”. But whether he falls short or not will not prove you were right so all your hating will be for nothing. It does not in anyway prove that we would have won with Alex. The debate here is who gives us a better chance to win the SB and according to your well respected boy, MR. GREG COSELL, Kaepernick does. That has been the debate. So you can wait until next year for a glimmer of hope but the door is closed and will never be proven otherwise and even the guy whose opinion matters to you says Kap give us the best chance to win the SB.

We not worried for you. We just rooting for our team like we have every year. Thanks for the laughs though.

BTW: Phatablahblah you are on crack because your mom is a lady of the evening & you whiny little girl. Me and my friends are having a nice laugh on a very nice day.
