MT: 2013 NFL Draft Preview

Posted by Taylor Price on April 25, 2013 – 10:21 AM

Finally.

The wait is over. The draft board is finalized. The prospects are eager. The fan base is ready. The draft bash is all set.

The 2013 NFL Draft begins tonight and it couldn’t have come any sooner. We broke down prospects and spoke with analysts about the endless possibilities, but that was all build up to the inevitable conclusion. The three-day draft gets underway tonight at 5 p.m. PT and the future of the San Francisco 49ers will come into greater focus when the team makes its first selection.

Will it be at No. 31, or will San Francisco move up to select a player they’ve been coveting all along? The outcome will be known shortly.

In Trent Baalke’s three drafts leading the team’s draft-day decisions, the 49ers general manager has traded nine times. In 2010, Baalke’s first year as Vice President of Player Personnel, Baalke moved up to select tackle Anthony Davis, a player who recently signed a five-year contract extension through 2019. Baalke also traded back in 2010 to select, two-time All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman, another player who has been extended until the 2018 season.

It’s worth noting that Baalke has never traded out of the first-round in three years. In 2011, he moved up in the second-round to select quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

With 13 selections heading into draft day, the possibilities for Baalke and his personnel staff are endless.

It’s safe to say the world will be watching. NFL Draft prognostications are endless, but they’ll stop very soon. We’ve compiled the top mock drafts for your consideration in today’s Morning Tailgate.

I agree gary! I am hoping to see us pick up an impact Safety and DE early on. I can’t wait to watch the draft tonight. I am sure Baalke has everything mapped out and is ready to move up or down if the opportunities arise.

im convinced we will be surprised once again by baalke and harbaugh,if we move up in the 1st round I hope its for sharrif floyd,of all the d-linemen coming out this kid was coached by bryant young and with the childhood this kid has he is going to be a very successful nfl player, there are maybe better sack getting guys but sacks are just glorified tackles and floyd is a monster on the line of scrimmage he seems to collaspe the line of scrimmage on just about every snapof the ball,,,IN HARBAUGH & BAALKE WE TRUST

its hard to mention names on who harbaugh and co. is gonna be picking ,i’m pretty sure they already have someone or somebody on mind, there in the combine , scouting report are in.its just a matter of executing picks, with those 13 picks, theres alot of space to move around and we don’t know exactly in what direction r they gonna do,so, i’m just gonna hope for a safety, nose tackle and a defensive linemen, on those 1st 3 picks.its gonna be a hell of night , tonite….”NINERS BABY!!!!!!

All the analyst have Oakland taking Floyd with the 3rd pick…about the only unanimous choice at who is taking who!!

This draft is also an excellent opportunity for us to bring in a OL “project”. Many OL will go early, but the OL is where we could take a chance at a sleeper…of course I am talking middle rounds. Still think the first three picks should be “D” with the exception being a TE…

  18. By ace on Apr 25, 2013 | Reply

well i have to say i liked some defensive players higher datone jones ? but what the hell do i know. or staying put and taking cyprein or elam ?

  19. By JParker on Apr 25, 2013 | Reply

Ace, you are right. Both Elam and Cyprien are better in coverage then Reid. I don’t understand Harbaugh’s reasoning on this one.

  20. By JParker on Apr 25, 2013 | Reply

The skinny on Reid is he is a highly aggressive player and a great hitter, but only average in coverage.

  21. By tanglung on Apr 25, 2013 | Reply

IN HARBAUGH AND BAALKE I BELIEVE

  22. By Hermie on Apr 26, 2013 | Reply

Here are some of the pros I have come across on Reid…He is known as an aggressive, all-around defender, with great closing speed and strength to wrap up and take down YAC-minded running backs and wide receivers.

Here are some of the cons I have come across…Reid does not possess great change-of-direction ability, making it difficult for him to recover from a mistake on the field. Reid has a tendency to get over-aggressive, which means he is out of position more often than coaches may like.

not big on reid could have got him at 31……but they saw something they like so on to the next rds…..here were they make the big picks…

  25. By mfkram64 on Apr 26, 2013 | Reply

could have got reid at 31…I don’t understand moving up for him….he’s third on the safety list anyway on to next rds……here’s were they make the picks that count

  26. By Hermie on Apr 26, 2013 | Reply

Let’s see if my pulse with the 9ers mindset is as good for the 34th pick as the first (if they trade down it will be for a DB). I still think they are going “D” with first 3 rounds, so will throw out 3 names, Tank Carradine, Margus Hunt (more raw like Aldon was, termed as freakish!), or I think they could go back to the DB position with Jamar Taylor…

  28. By 49erdefense2012 on Apr 26, 2013 | Reply

YO hermie, the 49ers believed the rams were going to take reid so they jumped in front of them, and the reid pick leads me to believe that someone is going to move to FS,reid is the eventual replacement for whitner I think,,,have faith fellow faithful, ,,

  29. By Hermie on Apr 26, 2013 | Reply

Thanks 49erdefense2012…we know how much Baalke and Harbaugh like the guys that are not afraid to tackle and wrap guys up!! No YACs!!!

WARNING: waawaa will be here to put his two blahblah in. Just a heads up. Waablah can’t help himself.

  31. By bow53 on Apr 26, 2013 | Reply

harbaugh and co. saw something in this kid (reid) that we did’nt, but i always trust there judgement ever since baalke and the coaching staff worked together . they turn picks in to gold , now we have a safety, now go get some nose tackle or a defensive linemen, the way i see it , were r picking players that could contribute now and be a franchise player in the future, so go kick some @ss on today’s draft….

    THE 49ERS

  48. By JParker on May 1, 2013 | Reply

The 49ers had a great draft, but it could have been better if we would have been patient and waited for our turn to pick versus sacrificing a high third round pick. That pick could have landed us Brandon Williams NT.

  49. By JParker on May 1, 2013 | Reply

I remember when the 49ers traded up to pick up J.J. Stokes. I thought they were going to take Warren Sapp. Since then I have been dead against sacrificing quality picks to move up in the draft. So will Reid be worth sacrificing a high 3rd or a the chance of landing a player like Brandon Williams? Only time will tell, but the history of trading up in the NFL draft says no.
