Morning Tailgate: 49ers Draft Scenarios

Posted by Taylor Price on April 23, 2013 – 10:36 AM

The guessing game continues. What will the 49ers do with the No. 31 overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft – trade up, trade back or stay at 31?

According to a report from Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, the 49ers could be looking to move up in the draft.

General Manager Trent Baalke said “Anything’s possible,” last week in his pre-draft meeting with the Bay Area media.

So, in essence, Cole’s report isn’t out of the question.

For now, the speculation game will continue until the clock hits 5:00 p.m. PT on Thursday night and the official decisions can begin.

More 49ers draft scenarios are discussed in today’s Morning Tailgate.

Bucky Brooks of NFL.com looked at the best and worst draft scenarios for all 32 teams.

ESPN.com is currently hosting a live blogger mock draft. The 49ers will soon be on the clock.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee shared his annual draft crush.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com looked at four potential prospects for the 49ers to take at 31.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reviewed Baalke’s draft history.

Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News wrote about San Francisco’s quarterback options in the draft.

Steve Corkan of the San Jose Mercury News offered his mock draft for 2013.

49ers.com caught up with Maiocco for a pre-draft podcast.

We also featured Joe Staley’s journey to the 49ers.

Draft day – almost here; i have a gut feeling and a strong desire for our braintrust to move up in the draft, give up later picks to move up and get that impact defensive lineman who can make an impact this year; conserve Justin’s energy for the playoff run and playoffs and use Justin wisely with an impact guy that can spell both McDonald and Justin . . . then get the best safety available with the second pick . . . DEFENSE still wins championships ! Love my niners, let’s move up and take advantage of all those picks . . . maybe even trade out for a lst or 2nd round pick for 2014 . . . San Francisco 49ers !

with picks #31,#34&#61,I see the 49ers getting 3 impact players for the next 10 years,I dont see anyone on the board in the 1st round worthy of having to give any of those 1st 3 very valuable selections, remember, moving back is more likely an option than moving up,the 49ers already have 10 picks in next years draft,so I can see baalke trying to get another #1 in 2014,,,with that being said,,,#31 bejorn werner DE/OLB florida state,,,#34 zach ertz TE stanford,,,#61 barret jones C alabama,,,#74 johnathon hankins NT ohio state,,#93,,phillip thomas FS/SS fresno state,,after that, let the trading begin,,,I like da’rick rodgers WR but character issues manke it hard to evaluate him,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,WITH BAALKE WE BELIEVE

  5. By 49erdefense2012 on Apr 23, 2013 | Reply

its not as suspect as you think ace, harbaugh says ertz can block “adaquently” which I interpret to mean good enough for harbaugh and vernon wasnt the greatest of blockers when he came into the league but with coaching he became one of the best in the league and we have some d,a,m,n good coaches on our staff, ertz was recruited to stanford by harbaugh,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

  6. By 49erdefense2012 on Apr 23, 2013 | Reply

and I dont think we need to be a b,a,d, a,s,s, blocker right away but he could contribute to our p,a,s,s,i,n,g game immediatley,,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

I’m astonished, I have to admit. Not often do I encounter
a blog that’s equally educative and fascinating on web 2.

0 site, and without question, you have hit the nail
on the head. This matter is an issue that not enough folks are speaking intelligently about.
It’s awesome that I was able to find this while searching for relevant topics.

I can see trading up in the forth round, but not in the 1st through 3rd rounds because other then a few prospects, the talent in the first round isn’t much different then that of the first 3 rounds. And trading up would cost us more then any player below the 20th pick overall would be worth. I hope we stand pat.

Gavin Escobar WILL BE the best TE in the league over the next 10 years~ watch out Gronk~ you will now be number 2 ~ Niners GOTTA take him ~ best hands by far !!!!!!!!!

ur right in harbaugh we believe when we drafted kaep i was like who ? but kaep certainly outperformed those qbs drafted ahead of him i believe and that was really his guy and balke got him, its been more hits then misses with these guys drafting now for us, would love to be inside their minda to know who is that guy this year

    Bruce Miller.

Now if only the 49ers had kept Alex Smith and turned Colin Kaepernick into a runningback.

Wait… they already did that. Well, except for the part where they sent one of the best quarterbacks in the league to the Chiefs. Again.

  17. By CaseyBeggs on Apr 24, 2013 | Reply

I don’t know about the best TE in the league BIG 9ER FAN but I do think that this kid has talent. I would be happy to see Escobar in a 49ers uniform. And whether it be trade up or stand pat with the early picks we have I think we are going to get an impact Safety and D-Lineman withtin our first 3 pics, most likely the first 2.

  18. By CaseyBeggs on Apr 24, 2013 | Reply

And phatalerror, don’t even start that again. I love Alex too, but he is not one of the best QB’s in the league. He is a solid, mitake free QB who knows how to manage and run and offense, but he is not an elite QB. I love Alex and wish him nothing but the best, and I will be rooting for him as long as he isn’t playing the 49ers, but be a fan and get on board with Kaep.

  20. By hackphx on Apr 24, 2013 | Reply

Dominant DE/DT who can push back double teams are very rare and always worth trading up for. Playoff teams have to pull this trigger or pray for luck. Go get Richardson. There are plenty of TEs and S (need 2) available after Eifert and Vaccaro for rounds 2-4, they can wait. What won’t wait is CB. We need at least 1 potential starter in this draft. Take flyers on Lattimore, Boyette, and Okoye for value. Get 3 more picks for next year. That’ll do er

  21. By tanglung on Apr 24, 2013 | Reply

blahblahblah is LACKING attention AGAIN. He is NOT a 49ERS fan. He is looking to p i s s off TRUE 49ERS FANS. All his BASHING and USELESS stats is quite BORING. Blahblah, You seem to have this special love for Alex and we all know that but he’s gone now. Time to move on . Kaepernick is THE MAN NOW. Get over it already.

  22. By ol'49er on Apr 24, 2013 | Reply

I Believe if we can move up and grab that dominant DE/DT,
the CB issue will take care of itself. Our CB’s had a great year, but were exposed later in the year when Justin & Aldon were injured. Next an impact SS such as Cyprien or Reid to shore up the back end. Finally would like to take Escobar to give us depth at TE. There are so many value picks out there after the 1st & 2nd rounds!! An exciting time to be a 49er!!

  23. By phatalerror on Apr 24, 2013 | Reply

CaseyBeggs: I’m not sure how you tier quarterbacks relative to one another, but right now, based on consistency, ability, and accomplishments, I put three NFL quarterbacks above Alex Smith without hesitation: Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers. After that, you have Matt Ryan, who has been surrounded by high-quality offensive talent for years; Eli Manning, whose team missed the playoffs once his receiver corps was diminished by the prior year’s free agency; Drew Brees, who slings the ball all over the place but didn’t play very effectively without Sean Payton coaching his team; Tony Romo, who is vastly underrated, but at the same time has been surrounded by quality offensive talent, and finally Joe Flacco, who after losing Anquan Boldin to the 49ers seems due to have a 2013 like Eli Manning’s 2012. After that, only a few of last year’s rookies and second-year quarterbacks hold any promise for long NFL careers.

Alex Smith belongs in that second tier, and is arguably better than all of those quarterbacks. If you can’t see how that could be after watching him for eight years and seeing how as the supporting cast improved, his play improved at better than a merely corresponding rate, there is little point in continuing this discussion. If on the other hand you want to suggest that Smith was traded away because the 49ers thought Kaepernick *is* better and doesn’t merely have more potential at a cheaper cap figure, maybe this is an argument we should have once Kaepernick proves one way or the other than he can or cannot read progressions effectively at the NFL level in this stage of his career.

Smith at least demonstrated he could read progressions. Kaepernick on the other hand is not near being a complete quarterback. I can be a fan without being blind to the facts. And the fact is, the 49ers franchise quarterback of now put up six points in the first seven drives of the biggest game of his career. That was only to get worse if the lights hadn’t gone out.

I do not see the brain trust trading up early…can get some good defensive players without doing that…unless it’s a DB!!

“Hall of Fame”? Really? bow53 and Hermie? Really?!!

    I’m still speechless.

    REALLY?!!

A lot of players that have broken single game records never enter into legitimate Hall of Fame nomination discussions. When Kaepernick does something besides ride his defense, dumb luck, and dumb defensive coordinators, then maybe he enters into a legitimate discussion of great NFL quarterbacks. Great “Hall of Fame” quarterbacks is yet one more tier above that.

Outside of a couple statistically anomalous performances, Kaepernick is all potential and no substance. Kaepernick has not even demonstrated that he can lead his team to a victory over the Rams or the Seahawks. Name me a Hall of Fame player that went winless against multiple teams in the same division. Let’s see him cover the basics before canonizing him.

    “Hall of Fame.” Positively ridiculous.

Hermie, you followed up bow53’s ridiculous contention that Kaepernick is going to be a “Hall of Famer”, and your “possible” qualifier was hardly tepid when in the context of everything else you wrote. You also called Alex Smith “average” by comparison.

Kaepernick is as likely a Hall of Fame candidate as any of the 200+ players to be drafted this weekend. He has a very short resume that wouldn’t have stood if he had started in week one of 2012. Ray Lewis, who will be in the Hall of Fame, had his comments about how the Ravens were going stop Colin Kaepernick discussed by the commentators of the Super Bowl. What did he say? ‘We’re going to force Kaepernick to beat us in the air.’ Quarterbacks with a bunch of rushing yardage and few red zone touchdown completions don’t make it to the Hall of Fame. And looking at that game, clearly Kaepernick didn’t beat them in the air. His final fourth down [throw] attempt to Crabtree (Crabtree? Again? As if the Ravens didn’t see that coming?) was every bit the panic hurl like the worst Smith ever threw in the same situation earlier in his career. Nevermind the fact that on your last chance on 4th and goal, you NEVER throw an uncatchable ball. But Kaepernick did.

So even suggesting that Colin Kaepernick is smelling the Hall of Fame after 10 career starts is abject stupidity, especially in light of the kind of high school-level mistakes he made during games that diminished the 49ers opportunity to win. And enough of the one-to-one Alex Smith-to-Colin Kaepernick comparisons, because they are all ignorant.

What you think? trade up and get the big Utah DT?

  45. By Hermie on Apr 25, 2013 | Reply

WaaWaaWaa, where do you get this cr@p…my observations are just as valid, if not more so, than yours. Yes, Alex has “proven” to be an average QB. If he did not have the defense (that you cry Kaep has)he would be the 6-10 QB he has been through 6yrs of his career…waawaawaa, he didn’t have the coaching Kaep does…waawaawaa!!!

Yes, Kaepernick has a great shot at being a hall-of-famer…something Alex does not have a shot of being and never will!!!

Where was Alex after his first 10 games…waawaawaa, he didn’t have the coaches!!! waawaawaa!!
