Morning Tailgate: Sizing Up the Defense

Posted by Alex Espinoza on March 28, 2013 – 10:56 AM

As the NFL Draft approaches, many are pegging the 49ers to pursue defensive line depth with their league-high 14 picks. Mike Sando of ESPN.com took stock of the d-line and 2013 prospects for Justin Smith, Ray McDonald and free-agent signee Glenn Dorsey.

“McDonald and Justin Smith had both played at least 85 percent of the defensive snaps through Week 15, which was when an arm injury forced Smith to the sideline until the playoffs,” Sando wrote. “Tampa Bay (three) and New Orleans (two) were the only other teams with more than one defensive lineman logging 85-plus percent of his team’s snaps to that point in the season. The Bucs and Saints had a combined seven other defensive linemen logging at least 30 percent of the snaps to that point. The 49ers had none.”

The rest of today’s Morning Tailgate looks at the 49ers secondary, NFL Draft news and more.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com offered a potential role for free agent Nnamdi Asomugha should he sign with the 49ers this offseason.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee listed draft-eligible safeties who could help fill the void left by Dashon Goldson at safety for the 49ers.

Andy Dolich of CSNBayArea.com wrote about the new Santa Clara Stadium’s chances of hosting Super Bowl L.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle looked at the possibility of the 49ers drafting Duke QB Sean Renfree.

Barrows reported the 49ers have set up a meeting with speedy West Virginia wideout Tavon Austin.

Sando broke down the distribution of money paid to NFL quarterbacks by team.

49ers.com offered a recap of the 13th Annual Winter Fest, which brought in more that $2 Million for the 49ers Foundation (video / story / photos).

I been watching alot of games of last years college season, so much defensive talent will be available in the upcoming draft, I wanted to get a fresh perspective of the kids coming out, and all the so-called draft experts saying move up for this kid and etc. etc. etc., the one thing I came up with coincides with what is going on with carson palmer, no, dave g. I dont want that guys name backing us up,but it might change who the raiders draft, if they go geno smith, sharrif floyd might drop out of the top 10,,if that happens, would it be worth it for the 49ers to try and move up and grab the best defensive lieman in this years draft who was coached by 49er all time great bryant young,,if floyd drops to 15, I would love to see the 49ers move up to grab that guy, im sure there is plenty of similar talent at that rosted spot in the later rounds but none that were coached by bryant young, the kids has all the natural ability but the mentoring of young just might help this kid put together a hall of fame career,,,just saying,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

im trying to post the youtube link with the interview with bryant young when young was asked about floyd and the kids abilities,,if your any kind of 49er fan its worth a watch,,,bryant young was one of the all time greats at DT and is for sure a first ballot hall of famer

Greetings from Germany! Love the Niners for Years. Saw them in London for two times now. Its time to get the ring for real! Coach H will make it . Trust him.

49er d. you are right on about b young. that being said i doubt very much he would drop out of the top 10. still wouldn’t be a reach. if i was baalke i would check mckenzie and see what it would take to move up to three. they need bodies and maybe would bite at our 1,3 and couple later choices.

  14. By johninchina on Mar 28, 2013 | Reply

Pretty exciting to watch what the “49er braintrust” – Baalke, York and Harbaugh – will do with those 14 picks and all the D available in the draft; quality guys for the future of our D line and the secondary . . . still would like to sign one solid vet at CB (Woodson ?)! Got to believe we are on the right track for a run at the playoffs and then SB ! Niners by the Bay! Yeah !!! Hey, BTW, i don’t see the “like it on facebook” pop-up this time and 11 Years, change your moniker . . . let’s move forward . . .

  15. By rjdniner on Mar 28, 2013 | Reply

11yrs your talking about PALMER the way you talked about Flynn and we all know that didn,t work out did it and why should the niner, ers waste time and money, on some one that has a bad knee we would be he,s third team that’s not good odds and from all the thumps down concerning your comment looks like everyone thinks that a bad idea from the start ….

  18. By mfkram64 on Mar 28, 2013 | Reply

and 11 years with no brain they will not get palmer….coach will draft klein if he is there in 6th rd….

  19. By SHIP on Mar 28, 2013 | Reply

There are like 20 QB’s who will be a better option than Palmer. He only had 2 good years in Cinci and has been very average at best since. You only know established names “Eleven”. Scott Tolzein is a better option than Palmer. There are so many guys available and in the draft besides boring Palmer. You might as well bring back David Carr. What an idiot!

  22. By mfkram64 on Mar 29, 2013 | Reply

again why r we talking about a stupid qb….carson palmer…really f”in palmer…they r not going to pay him first of all and he doesn’t want to come here it is so stupid 11 years…they will draft a qb late and take in undrafted and cut qb’s this summer….all and all i’m not worried about a backup qb….please…they need to address way more positions than backup qb….

  23. By Paul on Mar 29, 2013 | Reply

I say trade up for the one difference maker in a position we can’t get in the second or third round, and pick up some quality replacements for our current backups. Why stick with low quality backups if you can get future starters. Then trade picks for next year’s draft.

  24. By mfkram64 on Mar 29, 2013 | Reply

the thing about trading up..is how much do they give up? a 1 and 2 and a pick next year? that’s alot for one guy..is there a guy worth all that in this draft? floyd is good but give up 2 maybe 3 picks for him? i don’t think he is worth all that…the more i see it stay at 31 and take best guy…if it’s a dt,cb or safety take best guy who fits the niners team….than they have 2 more picks in second rd…i like these 2 picks and two 3rd rd picks this is value to me….scouts and coach do homework here is were they get the guys they need for future…

WE DON’T NEED CARSON PALMER LETS GO FOR A DRAFT PICK FOR A QB GO 49ERS

  26. By james on Mar 29, 2013 | Reply

why dont the 49ers bring in james harrison,im hearing all of this talk about a d-lineman,and/or an olb&james harrison is a beast, just think, him on one side, aldon smith on the other&justin on either side, then you draft a shut down corner&were set, plus trade a few picks for next years draft.just wonder if we have enough cap rom to sign him,any thoughts?

  27. By DYENNY on Mar 29, 2013 | Reply

YOU KNOW WHAT TAKING AND READING YALLS COMMENTS , I AGREE WITH 49ERSDEFENSE . IF WE COULD EVEN SIGN A FREE AGENT CORNER LIKE NANAMDI ASOMOUGA . GET AND EXTRA DEF . TACKLE AND OFF. TACKLE/GUARD . AND STOCK UP OUR PICKS FOR NEXT YEAR.

Coach your CB Mathiew is waitng in the tunnel sign him NOW dont wait Mathiew and Nnamdi its like Justin and Aldon DANGGGG…….

In response to all your posts, forget Palmer and Ngamdi! 49ers front office already said they are set a corner w/ Rogers, Brown, Culliver, and Cox. Don’t forget about Brock. That’s 5 CB’s the team committed to already. No place for vet CBs. Look to the FS position. Since 49ers are short on starting talent, I’m willing to bet they will look at that in the early rounds of the draft to compete with Craig Dahl. Super excited to see him compete though! We need a QB to back up CK7, plain and simple. However, unlike the Redskins, the 49ers brain trust will likely go after a QB capable of running the read-option plays. The key is consistency. Teams with survive a QB injury by having a backup that can keep the momentum going without completely changing things. Palmer doesn’t fit the 49ers system from last year. I don’t imagine he’ll fit this years system much better. Either way, April won’t come soon enough!!!

  33. By slickster43 on Mar 29, 2013 | Reply

Keep in mind, the 49ers don’t need a vet QB. That’s an added bonus to having Coach.

  34. By tanglung on Mar 30, 2013 | Reply

They’ll hopefully draft a D-end(Margus Hunt), Tightend(Tyler Eifert), Safety (Kenny Vaccaro), Wide receiver(Denard Robinson), Cornerback(?) Quarterback(Sean Renfree), D-tackle(Kawann Short).
