Morning Tailgate: Nnamdi on Radar

Posted by Alex Espinoza on March 20, 2013 – 9:41 AM

The 49ers bolstered their roster on Tuesday with the additions of veteran kicker Phil Dawson and receiver Marlon Moore. But the team might not be done making offseason moves just yet.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com spoke with 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke at the league owners meetings in Arizona to get an update on the recent activity. Baalke also told Maiocco the team is still “considering” free agent veteran defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha after he had a “great visit” last week at team headquarters.

“The 49ers’ top five cornerbacks from last season are in line to return,” Maiocco wrote. “Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown, Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox are under contract. Tramaine Brock was tendered as a restricted free agent. If Asomugha and the 49ers come to a contract agreement, Asomugha would join the 49ers with no guarantees of a starting job or playing time, Baalke suggested.”

The rest of today’s Morning Tailgate features the latest headlines on the newest 49ers and more.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee discussed the signings of Dawson and Moore.

Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group commented on Dawson’s addition to the 49ers.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle looked at the team going from one veteran kicker to another.

Mike Sando of ESPN.com gave a statistical look at Dawson.

Maiocco noted that Dawson is eager to kick in poor weather conditions at Candlestick.

Victor Contreras of the Sacramento Bee noted that Joe Montana will be inducted in the California Hall of Fame.

Branch and Inman discussed Moore’s potential role on the team.

Sando relayed observations of Jim Harbaugh and Pete Carroll interacting at the league owners meetings.

Maiocco shared comments from Alex Smith’s new coach in Kansas City, Andy Reid

i’m leaning towards woodson ,if u ask me, but in my opinion , were pretty much set in roster, just go throught the draft and build a strong roster in the long run….save that $$$$ for later w/ free agency that did’nt get pick up, hopefully they’ll make sense on there price tag..and use that $ on draft that we need to sign that fits r system…

Anyone here think that the new ‘no hits with the crown of the helmet’ rule implemented by the NFL Competition Committee will disproportionately affect the 49ers negatively? During the 2012 regular season, they rushed on over 50% of plays from scrimmage on offense (only the Seahawks and Redskins rushed more frequently by rate, and the 49ers ranked 7th in total rush attempts). Of all post-season teams, the 49ers ranked 3rd in that category per game (33.7 attempts), and rushed most frequently by rate (54.3%).

Will the 49ers in effect be punished for being a run-first team?

Frank does drop his dome as he’s pounding through the line, but my understanding is that it will only be a penalty when it happens out in open space? We’ll have to wait and see how they enforce it. If you are just trying to cover up the ball, I don’t think that is going to be penalized. If you are using your head as a weapon, that is where the trouble starts. I think we’ll be ok.

The rule does not apply within the tackle box. However, the 49ers’ newest incarnation of their rushing attack heavily utilizes misdirection runs, and many of those go well outside the tackle box. Where a runningback lowers his pad level to brace for contact and the judgment is left up to the official as to whether it was intended to ‘lead with the helmet’ or not, you are going to draw flags eventually.

Penalty for rushing with your head down . . . absurd ! Absolute nonsense, and more ammo for refs to control the game as they see fit and there is already tooooo much of that . . . whatever happened to “let ‘em play” in the SB when you get penalized for a stupid alignment call on the first play from scrimmage that negates a 20 yard gain and sets you back deep in your own territory with a 1st and 15; for a three & out and the second penalty for defensive offsides that gives the opponent a second chance on third down that goes for a touchdown ! Refs have too much control and discretion and replays are taking over the game . . . i really don’t like it; please no more stupid rules in football , why not drop all gear and just give the players flags , forget tackling, too dangerous . . . it’s like society in general, we’re over-taxed and over-legislated ; personally, i like Woodson or Revis, but do they like San Francisco enough to restructure a deal to play for a contender and win a SB Championship ? If it’s just about money, we can go elsewhere . . . Baalke, York and Harbaugh, the braintrust . . . go Niners ! . .

  10. By temper11 on Mar 20, 2013 | Reply

I don’t like it either… but I think it’s a CYA situation. The league is trying to do everything they can to protect the health of the players so they have a leg to stand on in court when former players sue them for brain injuries. They are trying to walk a balancing act between protecting the health of the players and the product that keeps fans buying tickets.

At this point forget Nnamdi if you’re not going to start him and I don’t think he want to be here for that reason too. Also forget Revis, forget Reed, or woodsen. Just draft a FS or CB in the draft. They’re cost less money.

    “now u proved u r an idiot”

Because I don’t unconditionally support franchises run in a Machiavellian manner? Sorry, there’s nothing idiotic about holding to justifiable principles. When the 49ers have to face Alex Smith again, they have whatever he does to them coming.

And despite the fact that what I write “has no merit”, you feel compelled to respond with insults rather than material evidence. What little material evidence you do provide is often meritless, irrelevant, or outright false. Accordingly, insulting is much more prevalent.

If the Chiefs make an idiot move, I’ll be the first to lambast them for it. I’m an equal opportunity advisor.

Now do yourself a favor: Give me the obligatory thumbs down, and move on with your life.

First things first. Im not big on the Safety Dahl pick up.With that said we need to address our DB’s starting with our safety in the draft. Corner is another need for sure but its nice to have Brown and Rodgers signed. I would go Safety,Corner,QB,WR, LB in that order Our 2 pick in the 2nd round would be a good time to find a back up to Kaep

that’s right mando…all the biching….people some people a small % love to bash the team…pick apart every move they make….why say u r a fan? I agree they r a top 5 team in the league last 2 years and omly getting better but some people want to down on the fact they r growning a solid team for years to come…they complain when they sucked now they get a good coach and gm and bring the team back to a winning attitude and people complain about a move here and there in in which true fact the moves have been great for the team…..making such moves makes a good coach great! he has to make bold moves sometimes…and so far harbaugh and baalke have made the right moves…

  49. By mfkram64 on Mar 21, 2013 | Reply

this one person has went as far as to down on the new kicker they just signed…and that’s my point…if u r not happy with the team and the moves go root for another team…how can u down on a team that has gone from the cellar for years to a championship team….akers was a good kicker but he had age and it showed last year….dawson is a good pickup…pro bowl kicker…to me it’s about being positive and we all aren’t going to agree with all the moves..but as a fan u have to believe in your coach and team….not down on their every move…

Dashons contract is worth $41.5 million for 5 years! The Bucs will absorb a big cap hit early on. We talking about a first-year cap figure of $9 million. In 2014, Goldson’s base salary will be $6 million, and he has a $3 million roster bonus. In 2015, Goldson’s base salary is $7.5 million and the figure stays the same for 2016. Goldson also has a $500,000 workout bonus in each of those years.

The point is this: Goldston was a serious hitter BUT do you really think it would have been smart to pay him that kind of money? Not that great in communicating with corners on coverages – hense how much we got burnt down the stretch. Don’t panic…Baalke knows what he is doing. Consistently great teams don’t operate this way.

Let the Eagles, Seachickens, & Dolphins continue to get giddy like a fan and overpay. See where that gets them! We are calm, calculating and have a plan.

  51. By dave g. on Mar 21, 2013 | Reply

There is a reason why we made no attempt to keep Dashon. Don’t get ALL caught up in the Pro Bowl selections, the hits and the sizzle. Think about all the penalties he has had and that he will cause in the future with his style of play – with the heavy emphasis on safety in the league. The coaches and everyone involved with the team know who really made the errors and caused breakdowns in coverages in the SB and playoffs. They know what they doing and what areas truly need to be improved.

KEEP THIS IN MIND WHEN YOU WONDER WHY WE DON’T SIGN THIS GUY AND THAT GUY.

    Year Maximum Team Salary
    2013 $123 million
    2012 $120.6 million
    2011 $120 million

  57. By dave g. on Mar 21, 2013 | Reply

When you have 53 players on your team, you have to walk a fine line of maximizing your talent and not over paying to cripple the rest of your team. When Dashon wants $9 mil a year thats over 7% of the max and you have 53 players! He is good but he is no Ronnie Lott! Now you are left with 52 players and an average of approx. 2.2 mil a year. It makes you see Dashons value a little differently when you consider the other stars we want to keep. Same with Delanie. So quit stressing and understand the process. Its not personal to the emotional lovers of Mr Alex Smith. And he even knows that.

  58. By phatalerror on Mar 21, 2013 | Reply

Alex Smith isn’t in San Francisco because he didn’t want to sit a whole season on the bench behind a deficient quarterback when he could be leading another team to the Super Bowl. That’s an awful lot of smack you’re talking about Smith with regard to his $9 million cap hit. You do realize that if Kaepernick ever realizes the level of play that Smith was playing at in 2012, Kaepernick’s cap number in 2015 is going to be far more than that, don’t you?

  59. By dave g. on Mar 21, 2013 | Reply

I am not seeing where I talked smack on Smith just on the obsessive fans of Smith. Of course he did not want to sit on the bench, nor did we want to have 9 million sitting on the bench. It worked out for all parties so why the moaning? I believe someone is ultra sensitive. Now you do realize as Kaps number goes up so will our SuperBowls, don’t you? The point is you pay accordingly….but as a “know it all”, I am sure you can grasp that concept – but as a “biased” individual you may not admit it.
