Morning Tailgate: Improved NFC West

Posted by Alex Espinoza on March 18, 2013 – 11:57 AM

By the end of last season, Jim Harbaugh argued that the NFC West could be named the toughest division in football. After watching the first week of free agency unfold, it looks like the road to a third consecutive NFC West title for the 49ers will be formidable. Peter King of Sports Illustrated took stock of the division heading into 2013.

“They’ll have more draft choices in 2013 than any other team — 14 — and GM Trent Baalke, despite what the Niners say publicly, has to be thinking about what it would take to acquire Darrelle Revis, with extra picks in the second, third and fourth rounds as chips,” King wrote. “Whatever, San Francisco has to be markedly better in the back of the defense to have a chance to win the Super Bowl in 2014. Clutch physical receiver Anquan Boldin will help Colin Kaepernick make plays downfield.”

The rest of today’s Morning Tailgate gets you primed for the NFL team owners meetings and more.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com listed items on the agenda of the NFL owners meetings.

Maiocco caught up with Harbaugh to get his thoughts on the initial stages of 2013 free agency and the 49ers.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee discussed Baalke’s patient approach to the offseason so far.

Will Brinson of CBSSports.com adjusted his latest mock draft to account for free agent signings.

Maiocco reported that the 49ers are still being linked with free agent defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, Barrows and Maiocco commented on the 49ers signing free-agent safety Craig Dahl.

yeah the niners might be over shadowed by a hawks team putting up 50 points or more per week …need to make the safeties play better and corners need to be really good at tight coverage like in the frist part of the patriots game …..our div is going to be crazy ..with the rams defense looking better than ours at times and the hawks blowing up the scoreing charts ….and their coach and our coach not fond of each other ,….the niners are in for some heat

pash rush is also a huge need with games against ravens and patriots and hawks as well as denver and prob giants we need to shore up the pash rush or get picked apart

  6. By DYENNY on Mar 18, 2013 | Reply

WE DIDNT LOSE ANYTHING WHEN WE LET RICKY JEAN FRACIOIS GO BUT 11 FOR 1 TIME YOUR RIGHT DUMERVIL WOULD FILL THAT GAP WITH FURY. AND WE COULD GET DUMERVILE AND REVIS WITH DRAFT PICKS AND WE HAVE ENOUGH MONEY UNDER CAP TO SIGHN LONG TERM WITH REVIS FOR 4 YEARS AOR EVEN WOODSONS FOR 2

logging on today it looks like someone forgot to take out the trash, back to 49er football, as of right now the 49ers are 5.5 million under the cap, they have filled a need at a few positions along the roster, and have some money left over, I dont see them trying to make any big type of moves,,,untill draft day,,,,,THEN ITS ON,,,too many names of the FA list with hefty $$$ price tags on them, I knew they would extend ian williams, the trade for dorsey is EXCELLENT we get a younger,,,cheaper version of sopoaga, allowing us to be flexible when drafting for that position in april. I see our 1st pick being being,,depending on who is still on the board and if we dont move up,,,it will be a DT/DE or DB,which ever is the best available at that pick, after that with two 2nd round picks the 49ers are looking pretty good for the 1st 50 picks in the draft,,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,,WITH BAALKE WE BELIEVE,,,TO 49ER FOOTBALL WE ARE FAITHFUL,

we also need to think, who’ll be kicking 4 us this coming season????now that akers is history…..

  12. By gary potter on Mar 18, 2013 | Reply

instead of going after expensive free agents, i would rather they go through the draft. baalke has enough picks to dictate what he wants. dl, safetys, cornerback, with 1st four choices. we are up against the cap unless they start releasing players on roster, and we have to have money to sign draft picks.

  13. By 49erdefense2012 on Mar 18, 2013 | Reply

My point exactly gary, from here on out its the draft and ,,,,maybe,,,,sign someone after training camp cuts,,remember,,that is where alot of veteran free agents become available very cheap,,,

Consider: picking up Peyton Hillis and putting him in the role Walker played. Just work on his hands this offseason and I think we won’t miss a step. Can’t leave a beast like that on the market. He’s a good-character guy and fits the team chemistry… Consider acquiring DeAngelo Hall too at a bargain as well. I think he has grown up from his Atlanta days…

  15. By temper11 on Mar 18, 2013 | Reply

I like your Peyton Hillis thought jay. Going to be tough to back fill for Walker, but Hillis might be able to pull it off.

49erdefense, Thank goodness we don’t have to smell the trash…..

and 11years with no brain shows again he is not 49ers fan but a seahawks fan now, i think 2 many free agents is not good, thats not how we win, maybee 1 or 2 more if 1 is a kicker cuz all he does is kick, only some players will fit into what we are doing and revis wants to be the highest paid defensive player in the nfl, um 1 word no not in a 49er uniform, i would love to have him at about idk 5 mill a year IF he is that good which we dont know now, i would look for guys more like dorsey still trying to prove something

  18. By ace on Mar 18, 2013 | Reply

de hall are you kidding me, isnt that the hall we drafted and let leave or got rid of ?

  19. By ace on Mar 18, 2013 | Reply

i hope we get some p a s s rushers from somewhere, safety, corner , is there i kicker worth drafting ?

Can’t wait to see what players we get in the draft. By far the most I’ve been looking forward to watch the draft in years!!! Niners have the most stacked team in the NFL and to add even better players to this team from free agency and the draft should be exciting. Another great year to be a 9er fan :)

  21. By Hermie on Mar 19, 2013 | Reply

Gary…49erD…agree with you both. Maybe 1 more FA if it would be someone like Revis…otherwise I think we can fill the rest of our needs and get much depth with our draft picks now!! One of my favorite things is the day after each day of the draft so I can go check out everything that is being said about the guy(s) we drafted as well as who a few other teams drafted!!

  22. By mfkram64 on Mar 19, 2013 | Reply

like to see them trade up for a beast d-line guy…get a stud for the future…like richardson or williams…..if not to me at 31 will take a cb…also a guy i put out there 2 months ago trevor auston from w. vir….wr/returner….like him alot…could be a move baalke makes.. trade up for him…crazy but that’s what u have to do sometime…

  23. By mfkram64 on Mar 19, 2013 | Reply

what is 11 years talking about? needs to take his meds….that’s what’s it’s all about having competion…the div. is getting better cuz the niners r the team to beat so they r all trying to keep up…seattle will be good this year but we will take care of them this year….carroll will show his true colors this year..the rahrah stuff will wear off like it always does and seattle will fall flat this year…just like everyone is saying they will be ready for kap. and the niners offense so will teams for wilson and he isn’t has good as kap….

hermie revis is to expensive. he wants to be top paid def player and i can’t see us paying that kind of money plus the draft choices to get him

  27. By 11yearswithalex on Mar 19, 2013 | Reply

LOL REALLY …you guys loved to waste 70 million on Alex and yet for a real football player Revis is too expensive ……..bah you guys rah rah and do not mind the wasted millions for has beens and for real guys you dont want to pay….the niners need quality guys and that position would help solidify the deep ball defense …….the superbowl was a joke and we got tore up because of that very reason now the thing to do is to rectify the position with better talent period or get tromped on again by a garbage ravens team who we have not beat since coach took over and we will be playing them if not 1st game of the season …we will play them early as always the superbowl teams do …and i for one would like to see the coach slap his brothers team around and get some action going

  28. By mfkram64 on Mar 19, 2013 | Reply

i think revis would be awesome but at what cost? he wants big money and the way i see it the niners arn’t going to spend alot on one guy anymore….that’s why i say asmoungha…longer it goes on the fa’s that r left out there will start to settle for less of a price….that’s when baalke makes his move…..

  29. By bow53 on Mar 19, 2013 | Reply

i think were cooling off on f.a. now, harbaugh and company’s mind set is on the draft picks now, we build throught it , and sign who ever is gonna fit on r system…we go from there, maybe in the long run, those player that didn’t get picked up,will make sense on there price tags….

I do consider all of the concepts you have offered to your post.
They are very convincing and can certainly work. Still, the posts are
too brief for newbies. May you please lengthen them a little from subsequent time?
    Thanks for the post.
