Morning Tailgate: Kaepernick Visits ESPN

Posted by Alex Espinoza on March 12, 2013 – 10:56 AM

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been a busy man during the offseason. Whether it be working out in Atlanta with his teammates, signing autographs for fans in the Bay Area or taking in a Los Angeles Clippers game courtside, Kaepernick is staying occupied. On Monday, the young signal-caller visited ESPN to discuss his candidacy to be on the cover of the Madden 25th Anniversary edition set to come out later this year.

The 49ers are well-represented in the bracket-style tournament which will crown the newest Madden cover boy, as Joe Montana and Jerry Rice join Kaepernick as No. 1 seeds. Kaepernick also stopped by the set of SportsNation to take on host Charissa Thompson in a football-throwing competition that involved nightvision goggles.

The rest of today’s Morning Tailgate focuses on the 2013 free agency period, which opens at 1 p.m.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle listed the 49ers’ positional needs.

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com offered his top 85 players on the free agent market.

Mike Sando of ESPN.com rounded up the NFC West’s free agency prospects.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com examined the possibility of Ed Reed joining the 49ers via free agency.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Maiocco and Branch discussed Ian Williams signing a two-year extension with the 49ers.

49ers.com wrote about Williams and started Big 12 Week of our 49 in 49 pre-draft series with a look at Texas S Kenny Vaccaro.

49er4life: You don’t have to be a Ph.D. in Psychology to observe from all past and present postings from the one who calls himself “11yearswithalex” to obviously see he is a pathetic individual with a unfulfilling life who transfers all that on to the team. He is a loser expecting others to always be winners!

A moment of silence ..please ..Alex is gone …….finally ….bout time what a waste of 8 years ……and yes walker is gone……bad idea the guy broke his jaw and came back and performed …i would rather keep walker and trade vernon …….vernon is a alex lover and does not like the kaeper so no meshing there …walker is a football player and gets open and makes plays ……..and really tradeing with your brothers team after he woopoped up on you argh …well we shall see how eager boldin is to perform ….i say he is worse than moss ….but we will see as well as james and hunter we need to open up rb’s out of the back field and missdirection plays …get those speed guys involved and maybe win a superbowl ….wich mean nothing now but a few hours of yay and a pay raise for the players …….bah blew the big shot and now everything else is just to say they did it …no real legacy to hang on to just another team trying to win and no greatness left for niners ….patriots and steelers have more and we will need some really goood years to make up 3 superbowls ……just a small race no need to get up and rant and rave there is always next season try again…and next season as well no real strive to be the best it was blown

if they don’t get smith they will get asomunga…i think he would be a goood fit…was a shut down corner in oakland,,,just didn’t workout in philly…he would come with that chip on his shoulder prove he still is a top corner….also ed reed will be here or new england now that ravens d is shredded…he wants a contender so if money is right could see reed here….

Sorry mfkram64…can’t agree with you on Nnamdi…too big a risk after the egg he laid in Phili. Cornerback is a fical position where they can have it one year and lose it quickly for one reason or another. I remember a couple of 9er backfields that I thought we were going to be good for years and bam!!

I know the salary cap is big issue for us…would rather have Revis.

  13. By Hermie on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

Another thing on Nnamdi is he isn’t known for being a hitter. The 9ers defense is feared for being that big hitting team and that is not Nnamdi. Will definitely miss Walker and afraid Goldson is soon to go. Glad we have so many draft picks!!

Eleven is not only a horrible speller but he is clueless to football. Delanie better than Vernon? Are you kidding?

  15. By SHIP on Mar 12, 2013 | Reply

Do you actually watch the games? Bolden worst than Moss? Have you seen their numbers lately and who will actually “FIGHT” for the ball when its in the air? You really do not know football. And the Patriots do not have more Superbowl wins but they do have more loses dumb@ss!

Smith has officially been traded to the league’s 32nd-best team. It’s a shame. If not for Smith, the 49ers finish the 2011 season without being a desirable free agency destination, and if not for Smith taking the first eight games of the 2012 schedule, the league’s defensive coordinators don’t fail to figure out Kaepernick before the Super Bowl. He leaves San Francisco dishonored among his own fans, coaches, and management alike.

The Kaepologists deserve what they’ve got coming. He’ll do less next year with a better team than Smith ever had.

  22. By mfkram64 on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

as far as moss he showed his true colors…the world”s biggest stage he goes and makes a stupid comment…best rec? say what? wearing a niner uniform..just shut up and go prove how good u r….well he showed us he laid down period…..bolden is a true man hard working and a leader…he will produce and help these young rec’s….

  23. By mfkram64 on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

i hear u hermie he isn’t a hard hitter but he his a good cover corner and if they can land him at a good price i think he will rebound…wait and see…smith from miami is there target guy i think…i hear u on cb’s over the years remember langham, clements, even woodson didn’t impress me were all bust pretty much…harbaugh and baalke will make the right move that’s what feels so good…u know they r in charge and r dam good at landing guys!

  24. By bow53 on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

i agree mfkram , that JH & trent is gunna find a ways in selecting guys that will fit in the 49er system, as u see and feel , they have some inteligent moves that really impress all of as so called faithful fan,.4 one thing the boldin trade , no body can beat that transaction, for a 6th rounder pick,c’mon, and we got 14 more to go, so we are in top shape in drafts and maybe the F.A. , the only thing here is losing key players like walker and maybe goldson, but that i believe is the nature of the business.. in the words of 49erdefense IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST…..and i trully believe we willbe a contender in a loooooooooong time….that to me feels great as a niner fan…..

  25. By mfkram64 on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

yes i couldn’t agree more bow53…i think most of us see it that way….harbaugh and baalke r a team and will make this franchise proud again…like they’ve done in 2 short years….niners r set for at least 3-5 years with draft picks baalke will make sure of that…..having 14 picks means picks for later years…losing walker is a set back but they will get a guy to fill that hole and i ‘ve went out there totally in favor of goldson but it’s a numnbers thing and like i said deep down it’s nice to know that the niners have a smart gm we can trust…and head coach…

  26. By Hermie on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

Harbaugh and Baalke have certainly proved their worth. One of the things I am most excited about is this whole off season to start implementing plays using Kaeps. strengths. The whole off season last year was spent putting in formations and plays to suit Alex! With the arm that Kaep has and Boldin and Crabbs.

They are gong to implement sooo many new looks!! Can’t wait!!

  27. By Hermie on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

I feel lucky we are not the Ravens…the players (and types of players) they have lost or are losing is scary. We have been “very” fortunate that a couple of years ago we had a lot of cap room and were able to sign some players to longer deals. The team we played in the Superbowl is going to be drastically different…we will have essentially gained!!

  28. By ChrisM on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

Why all the hate on Vernon Davis? Kaepernick and he clicked well in the playoffs and I’m glad they waited until the playoffs to start using Vernon. It was like a secret weapon that defenses weren’t prepared for as Kaep never used him much during the regular season. Without some of the big throws and big catches by that tandem, we don’t even make the Superbowl. Kaepernick has an absolute cannon for an arm and with Boldin in the fold our offense is just plain scary. Even losing Goldson, if we take a step back we will still be able to outscore most any team. I think they will replace Goldson and strengthen the D through the draft.

  29. By mfkram64 on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

i’ve been all over this post latetly….throwing out names and wish list..it’s fun to be a fan and we all know in the end baalke and harbaugh will do the right thing…with that said i’m going to throw out a name and yes it’s out there but what about turner from atlanta? he still can produce and my push has been get guys who have chips on their shoulders….pair turner with gore and man it would be lights out with this awesome front line put turner in there for those goal line runs…i think coming from a top team getting cut he would welcome to help win a super bowl in a limited role…thats what jacobs was suppose to do…just a thought…

  30. By mfkram64 on Mar 13, 2013 | Reply

u know hermie i agree….last two years they have lost a minimal amount of players…retaining their oc and dc for anoher year is awesome….like u said look at the ravens they r desamated….thats way i think the niners will add reed…

“We have all moved on to aquiring more talent-something you know little about.”

When the 49ers won their five Super Bowls, they were not only a talented, but a respectable organization. They are once again talented. They are no longer respectable.

I’ll be back now and again to remind you that I was right. Since Alex Smith is now a Chief, there is nothing for me to say until the games start counting in September.
