Morning Tailgate: No Franchise Tag

Posted by Alex Espinoza on March 5, 2013 – 11:03 AM

By the time the clock struck 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon, it was official: the 49ers wouldn’t be using their franchise tag in 2013. Many viewed All-Pro safety Dashon Goldson as a the team’s top candidate to receive the franchise tag, which would keep him in San Francisco for at least one more season. Once the deadline passed without an agreement, Goldson and 49ers CEO Jed York interacted on Twitter, both stating their desire to work out a long-term deal.

The rest of Today’s Morning Tailgate looks at the latest reactions to the 49ers roster as the team approaches the league’s new calendar year on March 12 and the innovative front office.

Forbes.com spotlighted 49ers president Gideon Yu as part of the new breed of pro sports executives.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com gave his take on Goldson’s contract situation.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee examined the current 49ers roster situation with Goldson’s future in mind.

Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group analyzed the Goldson-49ers dynamic.

CSNBayArea.com listed the eight NFL players who received the franchise tag from their respective clubs.

Mike Sando of ESPN.com noted that all four NFC West clubs did not use their franchise tags.

Barrows shared comments from former NFL exec and current ESPN analyst Bill Polian on Delanie Walker and possible 49ers free agents.

Barrows listed possible options at safety for the 49ers should Goldson test out the free-agent market.

49ers.com’s coverage included the opening of our 49 in 49 draft series with a profile on top-flight Alabama CB Dee Milliner and a look at the Top 5 Hits of the 2012 season.

Well if the plays stay the same and they dont change it up and create some more confusion for the other teams on all sides of the ball ….we will still be 2nd place to a joke like flacco ….still peeved at the utter lack of anything from the staff to win that game and now we are just another team in the mix …no longer perfect for superbowl apperances ….like i said alex and his i want to be released 4 days before the game was a great distraction as well as moss …both will be gone soon and if the niners ever hope to get back they need to do some serious looks at the defenseive line and RG/RT even center …..with a pistol and running game we need blockers and posetion recievers ….crabs has come a good way and did not need 8 years to do it …good job dude ……vernon has a crushy on alex so trade him as well and lets keep walker and get a good corner and sign goldson …oh and james looks good at RB …real good with hunter as a pacemaker the running game looks good just need some better talent to block

Reblogged this on Taylor Blitz Times and commented:
The 49ers better hope no one scoops him up or blows him away with a contract offer. This could backfire.

is goldson’s agent a seagulls fan?

i will stand by Jed York and Trent Baalke and we shall see; i know they didn’t like what they saw in the SB or falling so far behind in the games leading up to the SB any more than we did ! It seems there could be a change in the wind . . go Niners !!!

Man…. THE HAWK sets the tone for our secondary. Please believe receivers KNOW who he is, and they don’t want to go over the middle on him. I understand pass coverage is a liability, but, so is the run if you can’t stop it. Goldson is a beast in the run and an omnipresent footstep in WR heads. If anything we let Rogers or Whitner go. I like both of them but not when it’s between them and Goldson. He paid his dues, now pay the HAWK!

they need to sign goldson PERIOD! this defense is set up and to loss a big piece like a all pro safety will set them back for years…u have your def. co. back for third year with this unit…they should be lights out this year…remember they let up 15 pts a game this year with everyone back and add a d-line guy and some young talent d guys they will let up 10 a game this year…let whitner go and sign goldson to 4 years…get this done…NOW!.

A franchise tag is basically saying, ‘we like you, but lets see what’s coming in the near future.’ We don’t need that, we need to settle on a contract. @goreisabeast Rogers in quite possibly the best corner in the NFL. You don’t see his name a lot, there’s a reason for that, as a corner you don’t want your name in the highlights, unless it’s a pick. Receivers don’t beat him and QBs KNOW better than to throw it near him. (Lol at Tom Brady)I’m not saying that a corner is more important than a safety. They’re both very good at their position, just I’d hate the thought of losing any of them, Whitner included.

i agree @mfkram64 sign goldson PERIOD,thats an statement, we need this guy as much as we we need some key players, men…..this F.A. is killing me, i hate to lost good and quality players that contributed big last season, like walker and specially goldson, now moss and akers i understand we can afford to lost, but those two that i mention first gunna keep them..last year we gain some good name guys fr. F.A.but none of ‘em key factor like , jacob, mosss not really, now super mario is quite o.k.until he came down…well ..hopefully he keep the slack this coming season..well we can keep the faith on harbaugh and company…IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST..so they say…………………

I think we should keep gholdson as long as the deal is reasonable and isn’t gonna hurt more than help the team. Revis would be an excellent fit at corner, it would free up our defense to create pure havoc. But, ism’t asomugha still really good also… and just a thought but if we can get a reasonable deal with him we woon’t have to give up any picks and won’t have to worry about contract demands every year. Grimes is also a good possibilit at cb. AS for safety it would be nice to keep gholdson but if a long tem deal can’t get done then there’s charles woodson and ed reed both whom would love to win a ring with the niners.Getting a quality kicker is a priority, If we can get our wide outs in optimum shape i think we’re good there especially now that kap will geet more time to bond and get a more efficient connection with the receivers.there’s a lot of defensive line talent that could be gotten for a cheap or rather reasonable price knowing that they’re coming to a sb contender.

GUYS our defense works off of a lead …period. the hawks and rams defenses are better than ours on the deep ball we are not a lock next year with seatlle putting up 50 points 3 games ina row so we need more offense and big lineman to push on offense and defense for sure and get hunter and james in the game for plays out of the back field

  18. By 11yearswithalex on Mar 6, 2013 | Reply

i agree with ya nice thoughts on corners

  19. By 11yearswithalex on Mar 6, 2013 | Reply

Please sign Goldson to long-term 9ers!!! Without him our free safety position would be weak and a rookie takes time to get adjusted in the safety role. We need Goldson, he already has shown he is dominant playing as a safety.

  24. By FLIP on Mar 6, 2013 | Reply

we need the hawk HANDS DOWN sign him if we had better corners our safety’s could do there job brown and culiver are suspect at times

I am so glad I am not a lil emotional panicked lil girl like some guys on here. Geeeez. Take out the emotions and insert logic. Yeah, lets just throw money carelessly at all our good players. Guess what we have a lot of good players. Comprende? WTF is wrong with people? LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE. And Eleven quit your whining? “our div is going to hard next year”..wouaaa wouaaa wu wu wouaaaaaaaaaa! Grow a pair!

  26. By dave g. on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

Of course, I value Goldson but geeeez.

If you trust Harbaugh and Baalke, then trust they know what they doing overall.

  28. By NINERSS ALL DAYYY on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

@FLIP….You are right with what you are saying…But I think you are selling Tarell Brown short….he is a #2 corner who was forced to be a #1…Carlos Rogers was not the lock down corner he was the year before…he got paid and disappeared…my point is tarell brown is a Strong second corner and Culliver is developing and is awesome for Nickel coverage.

  29. By NINERSS ALL DAYYY on Mar 7, 2013 | Reply

So Im not sure how much guaranteed money we owe rogers but if its possible to drop most of his contract I would do it…strong corner draft coming up or possibly free up some cap space for revis??
