Morning Tailgate: Gore Reaches Out

Posted by Taylor Price on February 21, 2013 – 6:14 AM

INDIANAPOLIS – The 2013 NFL Scouting Combine is just about to begin. We’re all set in the media work room inside of Lucas Oil Stadium to cover the top college prospects for the next three days. First, 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke will speak with reporters as several GMs and head coaches will take turns talking to reporters this week. Jim Harbaugh will talk to the press on Friday.

As for players, it’ll be offensive linemen, tight ends and kickers talking with the press on Thursday. We’ll share some of their comments throughout the day, but first, let’s take a look at some of the top 49ers related headlines before the start of the NFL Scouting Combine.

Robert Klemko of USA TODAY Sports shared an interesting anecdote in a pre-combine story on South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore. The injured star running back was given a lot of advice after suffering a second major injury to his knee, most notably from 49ers rushing king Frank Gore.

“By his count, about 15 NFL players who have suffered similar injuries have contacted him to offer encouragement and advice,” Klemko wrote. “San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver, a former Gamecock, asked running back Frank Gore to call Lattimore.”

Gore dealt with knee injuries in college and was drafted in the third round back in 2005. Lattimore has been pegged as a third-rounder by many draft experts before the combine. Although Lattimore won’t be able to participate in drills, getting the opportunity to meet with coaches and NFL doctors this week will be crucial for him.

Bucky Brooks of NFL.com offered his latest mock draft.

Kevin Lynch of SFGate.com discussed the 49ers top five needs for the 2013 NFL Draft.

CBSSports.com shared a unique photo from Colin Kaepernick’s offseason workout sessions in Atlanta.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shared his thoughts on how the 49ers should proceed with backup quarterback Alex Smith.

Alex Espinoza of 49ers.com offered a defensive preview for the 2013 Scouting Combine.

tanglung, my my, 11 years really brings out the worst in some of us, hey ? let’s focus on draft and free agency, and what do you think of 4-3 D alignment ? We could use Ahmaad Brooks in an expanded role, he is becoming a great 49er player !!!

i hear tanglung…wtf was 11years talking about? anyway i agree it’s free agency and draft…but i do still have a super bowl moment like why didn’t they hand it to the guy whose pic heads this post…with a caption “reach out” ya for a td…again anyway..i wonder what’s up with aldon smith? i know when justin went down it hurt his play but lets face it justin nit going to be here for ever and aldon is going to have to pick his game up..he looked tired to me end of season…in super bowl had rb for a loss and just seemed run down and couldn’t tackle him..maybe his shoulder is more then they r saying..i think they should go get freeney i know he’s geting up there but he has a motor and is a winner…a leader and he could mentor aldon…he and aldon could split plays come in together on situations..i like freeny…

as far as draft…picking 31 is tough…needs r.. cb,d-line and wr…i say pick best one on board…see what they do in free agency and go get that need at 31…like to get revis but thats tough..i like d.r. cromontie ink him and freeney…and go get some young talent in draft…

  12. By mfkram64 on Feb 22, 2013 | Reply

at 31..at cb if he is there i like x.rhodes fla. st, big and physical..d/t…mankins or richardison from mizzou a monster…at w/r…tavon auston from w. virginia..alot of speed..

  13. By mfkram64 on Feb 22, 2013 | Reply

and last i think they should go for a rb around 2nd/3rd rd….get a guy to work under gore for the next 2 years lets face it gore and i love him to death but has a 2-4 year window..dixon isn’t the guy and james/hunter r change of speed guys..get the next albert morris or ballard…taylor from standord is a nice fit…or take a risk on lattimore but late in draft..could be next ricky waters..let him learn behind gore…

I tend to agree with 49erdefense. I think the d-line needs help. Not enough p a s s rush. I also think there was something wrong with Aldon. Hopefully the off-season will fix what ever ails all the players. On the offence. I think if Manningham and Williams come back the offence should be in good shape. But a wr or rb wouldn’t hurt. That’s if the salary cap will allow it. GO 49ERS….
