Morning Tailgate: Underrated FAs

Posted by Taylor Price on February 15, 2013 – 10:57 AM

Free agency doesn’t begin until March 12, but that’s not stopping NFL scribes and pundits from looking at the best players soon to be available.

In the case of NFL.com’s Adam Schein, the most underrated free agents came into greater focus in a recent post. The respected columnist listed his top-nine underrated free agents with 49ers Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro safety Dashon Goldson coming in at No. 3.

Goldson, a two-time Pro Bowler in consecutive seasons, recorded nine tackles in Super Bowl XLVII. It’s hard to believe a first-team All-Pro would be underrated, but Schein believes the 49ers defensive star power covers up Goldson’s impact play. After the season concluded, Jim Harbaugh made it clear that the 49ers want their 28-year-old safety around long-term.

Schein believes that’s the right train of thought.

“Goldson was the San Francisco 49ers’ ‘franchise player’ last year, so chances are he won’t be slapped with the tag again, as that would force the Niners to shell out a gigantic one-year raise,” wrote Schein, who voted for Goldson to be a first-team All-Pro. “Goldson wants a long-term commitment from San Francisco, and he has earned it.”

Goldson’s situation will be one to monitor when free agency talk heats up in the coming weeks.

Colin Kaepernick recently attended the Cartoon Network’s Hall of Game Awards and conducted several red carpet interviews. The 49ers quarterback also had time to impersonate another popular internet meme with US Olympic star Mckayla Maroney.

Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune believes the Chargers should emulate the 49ers and Greg Roman’s offensive innovation.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee examines six of the top defensive linemen headed to the 2013 NFL Draft.

Matt Bowen of the National Football Post is eager to see how the quarterbacks perform at the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine.

Dane Brugler of CBSSports.com breaks down the combine quarterbacks with the most to gain in Indianapolis.

49ers Hall of Fame wide receiver Dwight Clark recently preached the importance of healthy eating to a local middle school.

49ers.com shared the best photos taken in 2012 by team photographer Terrell Lloyd.

Work wins.

With 14 draft picks and five being in the first three rounds and 5 more picks in the next three rounds, I can safely say we don’t have to fret much over free agents. And frankly, as good as our defense is, for what ever reason it is not as good as it was the previous season.

I would trade all 14 picks for one JJ Watt type DL and one strong legged, consistent kicker !!! Both Ram games lost on missed field goals and SB second half opening kickoff short by two yards of going out of endzone. Wow, imagine that . . . please get a quality kicker !

  3. By Jenkins on Feb 15, 2013 | Reply

johninchina, it’s unfair to place so much blame on the kicker. Yes he did have his struggles. We didn’t lose both Rams games BTW. The one we did lose had little to do with his missed field goal. Remember the bogus itentional grounding call in the endzone for a safety? How about the botched read-option pitch inside our own 5 yard line that turned into a defensive TD? Take those two plays back and we probably win the game. And the kick return in the SB. There was a pretty blatant hold that wasn’t called that pretty much opened the hole. Hardly the kicker’s fault. And I agree with Parker. I am more excited for the draft than the FA pool

you’re right Jenkins, it’s not fair; but what on earth IS fair in this life ? I only want to express my honest feelings here and stress the need for a consistent kicker; and I admire David Akers, but his leg and mindset has been damaged; and i agree with you there are many, many areas that can be pointed at as deficient in our execution . . . but i want to be positive going forward, looking for excellence in the draft and holding on to Walker and Goldson !

There’s no way Baalke can ignore FA’s…you’re not going to patch all the holes with rookies. I can think of 3 that would instantly upgrade the DL and secondary. Randy Starks is a very versatile “big” who can play inside or out. You just can’t count on rookies to impact the DL immediately. Same w/secondary. My two choices would be CB Sean Smith. He’s a big CB (much-needed in our DB) who’s just coming into his prime. The other is SS Glover Quin. He’s a former CB who’s a fast-rising SS. Covers well (what a change from Whitner) and is a sure tackler. Signing these guys would make it a clearer draft picture…still need to take a couple of bigs, a CB, a S, and a TE and WR. Armed with at least 14 picks, now’s the time to use them to trade up and get quality over quantity.

Build team to take care of Marshan Lynch and beat the rams. We can win the division again but it is the best division in th NFL

Don’t play around go get Greg Jennings!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need a kicker. Nobody has brought up if Akers makes the FG in the first half we are not talking about the play calling at the end of the game cause we are only down 2 instead of 5 and only need a chip shot for the title at the end of the game. Even with the kickoff return and the bad officials.

Indeed. That, and the aforementioned short kickoff and we would be superbowl champs. No point even arguing it. Other players made mistakes as well, but Akers has been missing crucial kicks all season and needs replaced. Would Cundiff had done differently? We’ll never know now.

Thats what I like to see! Get that cardio going cause it seemed thats what the 49ers were lacking last season and plus every team except for 1 has at least a 2 week head start which equals to about at least a 1/2 mile or a pound of muscle extra or whatever. Cars run on petroleum, ethanol and alcohol. humans run on vegetable, nut and fish oil. Just ask Deon

  14. By baytownballer on Feb 17, 2013 | Reply

the ONLY free agent we should focus on is Mike Wallace…..we need DL help for my boy Justin Smith. You saw how our defense suffrered with out him. We need to groom another and we will need to look hard at getting a DT in the draft. But again, the only free agent the 9ers should shoot for is Big Mike!

  15. By baytownballer on Feb 17, 2013 | Reply

and straight up about the kicker. Give Akers his props for last year though, no one hated on him in 2011. But, we lost crucila games and plays because of the missed kicks. He just wasnt healthy. Much love to D.A. but time to move on bro.

  16. By Hermie on Feb 17, 2013 | Reply

Definitely agree with you johninchina…need a kicker whether drafter or free agent. New stadium new kicker to take us into the next era!! Akers was my MVP in 2011, but we need someone younger with a strong leg going forward!

  17. By Hermie on Feb 17, 2013 | Reply

Definitely think with the picks we have we move up once…maybe twice!

  18. By 49erdefense2012 on Feb 18, 2013 | Reply

for everyone in love with greg jennings, the guy has a hamstring that needs surgery,he has refused to have it and has had troubled staying healthy the last 2 seasons, the same will happen to him this upcoming season unless he has the surgery and then he will be lost for the 2013 season,,historicly, the 49ers hardly ever pkg draft picks to move up they have done it only 4-5 times in the last 25 years according to reports. as for the kicker,,,we might see last years pre-season phenom giorggio teevechio on the squad, that guy was nailing 50+ yard field goals at candlestick during the pre-season and he would come cheap,,,very cheap,,MIKE WALLACE?? the guy is a new type of randy moss,,he runs the “9″ routes well,,,AND THATS IT,,, the guy drops more p,a,s,s,e,s that he catches and would cost WAYYYYY TOO much cash,,,,as cap-strapped as the 49ers are we most likely will release certain players to free up as much money as we can and look to re-sign our core players and once again atempt to re-load and find depth type talent in the draft,,,REMEMBER PEOPLE,,,moving up in the draft means having to pay higher profile rookie contracts and we are,,,once again,,,very cap-strapped,,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,,,

49ersdefense, Thanks for the insight. But like you always say. IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST.

For all of you fans that are talking Greg Jennings, and Dwight Freeney, please take a look at the L A Lakers, and what a joke they’ve become,by signing all of those OLD, and TIRED big names. Lets build through the draft, we have enough picks to move up, and down to get impact players.

  21. By 49erdefense2012 on Feb 19, 2013 | Reply

here are some possible mid to later round draft picks the 49ers might be interested in,,,S TJ McDONALD,,USC,,,WR ROBERT WOODS,,,USC,,both these guys can play and we all know about the pedigree of McDONALD,,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

  22. By tanglung on Feb 19, 2013 | Reply

    I still have 49ERS FEVER….

  23. By 49erdefense2012 on Feb 19, 2013 | Reply

chase thomas OLB/MLB from stanford would be another great addition in case we lose larry grant to free agency,,,,also brian shwenke C from cal could be a johnathon goodwin re-placement,,,I really feel the 49ers will take desmond trufant CB from washington with the 1st pick if none of the 1st round evaluated DT/DL prospects are gone when they pick at 31,,there will be plenty of DT/DL in the later rounds to be got,,but CB’s with the potential to start right away will be gone early on in the 2nd round,,better to get a top flight corner at #1 then to over-reach for a DT/DL with that pick…but hey,,who really knows whats going on inside the mind of trent baallke and coach harbaugh,,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,,,

  24. By 49erdefense2012 on Feb 19, 2013 | Reply

I am so over the super bowl loss already,,,I am ready for the scouting combine,O.T.A.’s and mini’s and training camp,,,it is a great feeling knowing that my season tickets for the final battles @ ‘THE STICK are paid for,,”,,the 49ers actually asked for season ticket payments last january”,,and that my seat licence or whatever they call it at the new santa clara stadium is paid for along with my 1st season ticket pkg as well..I AM READY FOR THE HARBAUGH DYNASTY DAYS OF THE 49ERS,,,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,,,,

  25. By tanglung on Feb 19, 2013 | Reply

49erdefense. As you know, it’s hard for teams to get to the superbwl let alone win a superbowl. I hate that THE 49ERS lost the superbowl but I look at it this way. Now THE 49ERS can go into their next superbowl and not have to worry about losing their first. Less presure if you know what i’m saying. I feel with a few adjustments (defense line), THE 49ERS are and will be good enough to win the superbowl. Hopefully this coming season. I STILL HAVE 49ERS FEVER…..

  26. By mfkram64 on Feb 19, 2013 | Reply

i hear ya 49erdef..jennings is hurt to much…great if they got him cheap but that isn’t going to happen..bowe would be the fit but might be to much money…same with wallace…i like armendola wr/return guy..some mock drafts have them taking austin wr from w.v….i like trufant but will he be there? alot of questions but like we say IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST!

  27. By Joemama808 on Feb 19, 2013 | Reply

What the 49ers need is a big nose tackle to help out Justin Smith and slow down runners like Marshawn Lynch and Steven Jackson. We also need a shutdown corner to replace Chris Culliver. I’m thinking Darelle Revis in a trade for Alex Smith. However Revis might be too much of a cancer on our locker room. We do have strong leadership types on defense so maybe they can get him on-board for a chance at a Super Bowl ring.

  28. By mfkram64 on Feb 20, 2013 | Reply

we all been talking defense..what about finding a rb to take over for gore..lets fae it gore i love’em but his window is maybe 2-4 years..dixon is not the answer and james/hunter r change up backs…they need to get a guy to learn behind gore next 2 years…u need a good running game and with this type of offense the defenses have to honor the run..so they might surprise some people and take a rb early..

  29. By 49erdefense2012 on Feb 20, 2013 | Reply

I think hunter has what it will take to re-place gore, remember he is just short, not small in stature,,emmit smith, barry sanders, marshall faulk, garrison hearst, even todays rb’s,,doug martin,,,,,ray rice,,,I hate mentioning his name here,,,they are all short in stature rb’s but weigh near 210 lbs..little pitbulls,,hunter is in the same mold,,,I dont think we get stepfan taylor from stanford,,,I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THAT GUY AS WELL AS HARBAUGH MOST LIKELY WOULD,,,but I see us taking a chance on marcus lattimore the rb,,we have good depth at rb now but if that kid can come back from his injury,,that would be a stud to have,,I know,I know,,I dont like what if’s and maybe’s as much as the next guy, but isnt that what this time of year is for?? what if’s and maybe’s?,,only the draft and free agency will reveal what harbaugh and baalke are going to do,,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

  30. By 49erdefense2012 on Feb 20, 2013 | Reply

and yea mfkram, I would love to sign dwayne bowe,,that guy fits the mold of the type of wr the 49ers want,,big, strong, physical and can bun block at the point of attack and downfield,as well as beat press coverages and make the tough catches,in fact, many so-called talent evaluators think bowe is the best run blocking wr in the nfl,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

  31. By 49erdefense2012 on Feb 20, 2013 | Reply

I dont see us moving up to take ANY wr in the 1st round or the 2nd round for that matter,,our 1st two picks will be on defensive players for sure,,,barring a small miracle in which we trade up to take one of the wr’s with a 1st round grade,,,now,we may move up to take one of the bad a,s,s, safety’s coming out in this years crop but we will just have to wait and see,,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

  32. By Micah on Feb 20, 2013 | Reply

I agree we need to build through the draft. We have 14 picks and most in the first few rounds. We need to move up and grab a top tier WR to go on the opposite side of KingCrab. I’m talking a big physical tough great hands Wideout and then dump Moss keep Manningham and well be set at WR for years to come. After that how about a Gronk size tight end? I love Delanie and hope to keep him but he does so much hell always have a place as a Niner. Also we need a consistant young kicker to put in place for the next 10 years. Enough losing because of bad kicks. Best of luck Akers you did us great last season. Well never forget

  33. By Micah on Feb 20, 2013 | Reply

49eerdefense2012 are you serious? First 2 rounds defensive players? Wow not gonna happen dude. And safety? We have stud safeties and I can almost garantee we will not take a safety with any of our first 3 picks. Offense it will be and most likely WR or a Defensive Lineman. We could use a stud rusher to start learning from justin Smith before he retires
