Morning Tailgate: Jan. 16

Posted by Taylor Price on January 16, 2013 – 9:36 AM

Looking for an unsung hero on the San Francisco 49ers defense? Look no further than sixth-year cornerback Tarell Brown.

The 5-foot-10, 193-pound cornerback continues to be one of the key contributors on a 49ers defense that stands one win away from reaching the franchise’s sixth Super Bowl.

Brown recorded a career-high 59 tackles in the regular season to go with 14 pass breakups and two interceptions.

Quietly, Brown has come up big all season for the 49ers. The fundamentally-sound defensive back intercepted a pass in San Francisco’s Week 17 win and followed it up two weeks later with an impressive interception in the 45-31 Divisional Playoff win over the Green Bay Packers.

For a second consecutive postseason, Brown turned in a key interception.

Brown’s efforts, however, aren’t going unnoticed. ProFootballFocus.com reviewed the 49ers dominant victory over the Packers and singled out Brown’s performance. According to PFF, Brown was thrown against on four different occasions by Green Bay’s high-powered passing attack. In the end, Brown allowed two receptions for 16 yards. His interception, a quality over-the-shoulder reception of a deep Aaron Rodgers throw, was also returned 39 yards.

With the NFC title game just around the corner, the 49ers defensive back will be counted on once more against Atlanta’s impressive passing arsenal.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports wrote a compelling feature story on Colin Kaepernick

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times shared details on Jim Harbaugh’s latest motivational tactic involving high school photos.

Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News looked at the comments of safety Donte Whitner who sees a better 49ers team entering this year’s NFC title game.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com continued his matchup series with a look at Patrick Willis’ challenge of covering Tony Gonzalez.

Maiocco also shared a transcript from former 49ers coach Mike Nolan, Atlanta’s defensive coordinator.

Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote about the striking contrast between Kaepernick and Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News examined Atlanta’s challenge of defending Kaepernick.

Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News caught up with CEO Jed York to discuss his social media presence on Twitter.

CSNBayArea.com recently aired this video on a Los Angeles Bar being filled with 49ers Faithful watching the win over Green Bay.

49ers.com caught up with Vernon Davis to discuss the upcoming NFC title game, plus looked at LaMichael James’ confidence towards big games and the defense matching up with another elite quarterback.

sooo i did not see alex cheering with the guys in the locker room nor have i seen any more interviews is he still on the team or what …..he will be released or have they allready released him from any duties ……lots of teams looking for a QB we should pay him the 3 mill and trade him since the draft is thin at QB ….we will need more picks to move up and get a big mauler DT for the defensive line and a good shut down corner and a burner WR with hands ……..niners are rolling and with a couple of spots filled they can be the juggernaught of the NFL ……….gooo niners ……….woooooooooooooot

Time for the 49ers to bring on their best moves so they can take this to the next level the (Super Bowl). This is it 49ers you have to go to Atlanta and play at your best if want to go to the Big Game at New Orleans. I do believe if the 49ers come in hot, they will win this game.

the 49ers have work to do. I was very surprised to see what the 49ers playoff road win-loss record was, through out the years the 49ers have been terrible on the road during the playoffs, something like 2-9 I think. its time to buck that trend. it will be loud in the georgia dome, the defense needs to take conttrol of this game early and silence the crowd…IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,,,

This game will be a nail biter for the first quarter, then the 49ERS will silence the dome and win by a large margin. (17 + points) The 49ERS will go on to the SUERBOWL and win #6. The 49ERS offense is playing at a much higher level and the 49ERS defense will be a BRICK WALL all the way through to the SUPERBOWL.

it is nice to see the bandwagoner alex cryers jump on board with colin …..even to the point of complementing him that he is better …even though the stat junkies all dried foul when CK took over …….and yet now want him to win the superbowl …like i said the niners were so low even the fans thought a mediocre QB was good enough for 8 year 90 million dollar bust who amounted to nothing but a few good plays and a bunch of wasted hype ……no i dont hate alex i dislike the fact that he stayed to do what make us wait longer to be an elite team …..sure fine he wanted to accomplish something …..besides fattening his wallet …..fine ….some good moments sure but amounted to a jeff garcia like run that amounted to…0…..and yes the number of other Qb tries came and went and why was this checkdown artist so enticeing to coaches to keep him and waste all that time and their carreers on him after 4 years ….come on bust is a bust ….no matter how much you want to cry or root for the guy who will never get it done …sorry for rant but come on ….alex wasted a lot of years for gore and willis and vernon all the guys justin ….man oh man the years wasted ….reading my comments as well about the subject at least next season will be all that much better

the falcons gets off the gate fast and strong, just like they did during there game w/ the seahags, they started 14-0 i believe , not sure but that’s there main opening of plays , but for some reason , they slow down in the closing quarter of the game, i consider this there weakness, so we need to take advantage of that, and i truelly believe our defense can get to ryan not that hard cuz’ there o-line is not that solid enought to hold him w/ much time, i can see the smith bros. is gonna have a field day come sunday we hold him we have a huge chance of snugging a victory here, and if our o-line will remain solid and create a holes for our rb’s and open line for ck7 i would say again…WILL BE ALRIGHT……

Phatalerror – You scared to say someone is great before it happens. You play it safe and state the proven, the obvious, copy and paste numbers BUT you afraid to call the less obvious. The fearless are not afraid to say before it happens and the smart will tell you whats going to happen before it does. I gather all the intangibles and less obvious aspects AND I foresee whats going to happen & I’m not afraid to say it. What KAP is doing is severly being under-estimated by you & if you are just categorizing him as a running QB you are obviously not observant enough. There has been a lot going on with this team since KAP took over…they are transforming into something special and defenses are scared to death-are you looking at the players on both sides-seriously?. Yes…there are those who are jumping on the bandwagon for KAP blindly BUT really look free of bias and open your eyes. This kid is a special one. This is not Michael Vick or Vince Young or even Randall Cunningham. THIS KID IS SPECIAL so you either protecting your ego or you just not as smart as you think you are! Seriously. YOU REMEMBER THAT I TOLD YOU WHEN YOU SWALLOW THAT PRIDE DOWN HARD WHEN YOU HAVE NO CHOICE TO ACCEPT AFTER THE FACT!

i think kaep could p a s s for 2500- 3000 and run for 1000 + in a full season, with say 30+ tds, has that even happened before ? or would 2000 yards rushing be more realistic from kaep , cuz i know thats never happened, thats what this kid is gonna do for us, that which has not been done before, gooooooo niners !!!! LETS DO THIS RIGHT NOW 1 GAME BETWEEN US AND THE SUPERBOWL,SQUISH THE FALCONS, GOOOOOOO NINERS !!!!

i really never thought the option run play would work against nfl defenses but with the way kaep executes that hide and seek with the ball, stick it in the rb’s gut and pull it back after uve seen him hand it off that way, well if you turn ur head for a sec hes gone around the corner past entire defense just like that, he will be able to pull that off once or twice every game from anywhere on the feild, hes the fastest guy on our team ? who knew ?

Dave G., no one appointed you as the official talent scout of this blog. Please don’t presume to speak as an authority on the matter, and don’t presume that your vision of what Kaepernick could be is what will absolutely happen, because you may very well be humiliated. There’s an asterisk hanging over every one of his so-called brilliant performances. There comes a point in every NFL player’s career sooner or later where he is no longer gifted the opportunity to succeed by the incompetence of an opposing player or his coach. In Kaepernick’s case, it is coming later, but it will come. You can anoint your chosen quarterback before that time, but it is inadvisable.

You do remember that Vince Young was on the cover of Madden 08, right? I’m just saying….

  48. By phatalerror on Jan 16, 2013 | Reply

You don’t want any more stats, and I don’t want any more context-less measurables. Kaepernick throws a fast spiral. Good for him. He threw one of the fastest pick-sixes I’ve ever seen in a 49er throw.

  49. By phatalerror on Jan 16, 2013 | Reply

I’m not looking for a gadget quarterback that is going to be made to look ordinary once a better defensive coordinator than Dom Capers brings his better disciplined defense against the 49ers. I’m looking for a quarterback that can throw from the pocket, not a quarterback who thrives on a Paper-Rock-Scissors style of offense. I’m looking for a quarterback that can make multiple reads from behind the offensive line that is being proclaimed as one of the best in the league. I’m looking for a quarterback that doesn’t stare down his primary receivers. I’m looking for a quarterback that doesn’t throw in a panic at least once in every game. I’m looking for a quarterback that can elevate the play of more than simply one other player on the whole team.

Getting closer to another Championship trophy!! We are only 5-8 in NFC Championship games. Wish Brodie would have won one!!

I hope Kaep is focused…this is a lot to go through in a first season of starting!! Like he said, if you prepare enough there isn’t anything you should get nervous about. Wish it worked that way…I remember some games in high school where the ride to the game (school bus, sometimes over an hour), was kind of gut wrenching.

Looking for many years to come with this kid and am very excited to see his career progress!!

Who’s got it better than us???? NOBODY!!!!!!!

Teams make it to the Championship for a reason!! There are no gimme’s when you make it this far. Need to keep their heads in the game and stay focused…That being said, as long as Kaep can keep his composure, I don’t see why we can’t win by 10pts.!!

“…no team feared the niner off. w/alex…”

You’re absolutely right. Defensive coordinators rested their players during the weeks preceding games against the 49ers. Defensive players around the league have repeatedly gone on record as stating that they loved when the 49ers were on their schedule because it was like having two byes in a season. For NFC West teams it was even better.

    Gimme a break.

    Here’s another stat for you:

Alex Smith in 2012 starts where the 49ers’ turnover differential was +1 or better (excluding the week 10 game against the Rams): 4-0
Alex Smith in 2012 starts where the 49ers’ turnover differential was 0: 2-0
Colin Kaepernick in 2012 starts where the 49ers’ turnover differential was +1 or better: 4-0
Colin Kaepernick in 2012 starts where the 49ers’ turnover differential was 0: 1-0

Isn’t it funny how the 49ers’ wins correlate directly to their defense’s performance, regardless of who is quarterbacking? What game did Colin Kaepernick win where the 49ers didn’t win the turnover battle? The Dolphins’ game in San Francisco? Wow.

The Seahawks were more afraid of Alex than they were of Colin. You Kaepologists forget that 13-42 Week 16 loss so quickly. That was three weeks ago, folks. That’s not ancient history, unlike the lost years of Alex Smith that you so frequently refer to as justification for the switch to Kaepernick.

  58. By phatalerror on Jan 17, 2013 | Reply

“he will learn so much more and will be a good qb for a long time…if not great! he has a great attitude and has that intangable he knows how to win! just give him the chance and he will succeed in doing it!!!!”

So your rationale is that Kaepernick will progress because he’s young, but Alex Smith cannot because he’s… old? No. The definition of “Ceiling” has been warped into a cheap and deceitful means of saying that a quarterback isn’t physically gifted enough to be good.

I guess Peyton Manning had a low ceiling because he wasn’t a mobile quarterback. Tim Tebow on the other hand knows how to win. The Broncos were 1-1 in the post-season last year, but this year, they were one and done.

Context, people, context. Peyton Manning is a better quarterback than Tim Tebow. Alex Smith is a better quarterback than Colin Kaepernick. Colin Kaepernick however is easier on the salary cap.

I have to admit that when JH made the switch to kep, I was a bit scepticle, change is not always good but sometimes as in this case it turned out good, Kep is crazy good, Alex was not the best QB but did a very good job, I hope the best werever he goeseven if he stays with us, good to have a good QB backup. Look at the Vikings without a good QB backup.49ers have a great team, even better with Kip at the helm, all this raggin on eachother is drama, don’t want drama I want the 6th supper. it’s time to back our 49ers focus on the real thing, Atlanta, then the supperbowl. This our year we are crazy good.

Its just a fact!” you should follow that up with evidence that Phatal is indeed an Omega male. Just simply stating it as you did, doesn’t make it a fact as you proclaimed. Don’t hate phatal just becuase he knows how to argue better than you do, you being an Alpha male and all that must really be annoying… but take heart, there is still time, just learn to argue you points better.

Another example from Dave G: “Phatalerror-Anyone can copy and paste numbers and stand behind it. Wheres the insightfulness there? Try predicting things before it happens? THATS WHAT I DO BEST.” As if making unsubstantiated predictions is somehow harder than making substantiated predictions. Phatal does try to predict things before they happen. He does it by taking a serious look at averages, match-ups and yes, statistics and then makes his predictions based on those. You don’t have to agree with his predictions, but to say that your crystal ball, taro card approach is somehow more insightful is just laughable.

I don’t disagree with you tanglung necessarily, and I am enjoying where we are right now. But some of these posts are so “back-a$$wards” in terms of how to have a discussion that i feel compelled to comment on them. There are a few “loud” bloggers on here that like to bolster their own self-esteem by gang-blogging on a few other people that don’t walk lock-step with there vision of the 49ers. The insults and 2nd grade playground tactics are just so pathetic to me that I again… feel compelled to comment. But, you are right, the focus should be on this Sunday and hopefully a couple of Sunday’s after that. Go Niners!

After all, we are ALL Monday morning QB’s on here. All of us – Monday morning coaches, GMs, etc. The very purpose of a blog is to give an outlet for people to be Monday Morning QB’s/Coaches. The “you’re nothing more than a Monday Morning QB” insult on a blog is just about the same as saying “you’re nothing more than a human being”. Here’s to hoping we have a couple more Monday mornings to QB!

Kaepernick, is an Exciting young player, who makes youthful mistakes but bounces right back, no fan here enjoys watching him play more then I do! But he may be just one play/hit away from Alex stepping back in? We have the best offense line in the NFL, but they can’t protect him when he’s playing fullback! The longevity of the galloping QB in the NFL isn’t all that great, just isn’t!
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

Still makes me nervous though when he starts running out there… Seen too many “mobile” qb’s with short shelf lifes. We keep hearing about his 90+ mile an hour fastball, I want to know how good he was at sliding into second! :) Go Niners!

Hopefully he’s paid attention to how RG3’s season ended and how his predecessor’s season ended, and how Micheal Vicks season ended, etc. and learns to slide!

alex is a better qb than colin” u should say “i think alex is a better qb than colin” alex had a good year last year and half of year this year…come see me when colin plays 8 years to make that call…and salary cap quote is well just f’in stupid…they told coach to sit alex and use colin for rest of year so they can cut alex at end of year..think about what u just said…ya coach would throw away a winning season to TRY colin..he saw what this kid had in practice and in the bears game..he went with his hunch like alot of coach’s do…some work some fail..so far his hunch is paying off…and for SOME of us niner fans it’s AWESOME! i like how u pick the seattle game…or one play in a game he makes a mistake..the seattle game was a team loss…wake up!

pte: i don’t believe anyone on the blog has forgotten the stomping that the sea chicks gave us. but to put blame on 1 person is stupid. it was a complete team meltdown, coaches players were all to blame. ck7 is going to be a great qb if he doesn’t get hurt. i have seen them all, from frankie albert to ck7, and this kid ranks about #5 right now. #1 montana #2 frankie a, #3young, and #4 a tie between brodie and yat. he is truly the franchise qb. i was and still a AS supporter but ck7 is the future.

oh come on, put it to rest! Everybody here backs Kaepernick !
some just don’t care how the switch happened, and I have to wonder if Kaepernick is hurt ,,, will he come forwarded ?
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

“So your rationale is that Kaepernick will progress because he’s young, but Alex Smith cannot because he’s… old?”

No, you miss the point everytime…that is not the rationale…sometimes, people have “physical” limitations that do not allow them to do certain things…that is one reason Alex does not have a good completion percentage in pa s ses over 15 yds because he does not possess the arm strength to get the ball in tight spots. Alex has progress a lot over 8yrs (should I say the last 2)…Kaep has progressed greatly over 2yrs.

  79. By Hermie on Jan 17, 2013 | Reply

Here are some of the physcal and mental traits Kaep already has over Alex:

    Size – Bigger and faster
Arm Strentgh – no comparison, Kaep is probably in top 5 of NFL
Pocket Awareness – Better pocket awareness than Alex
Reading Defenses – I give it a draw based on the last two games
Learning ability – Gee, have to give that one to Kaep too…maybe it is the extra time he spends watching film etc…that Alex does not do.

  80. By 9erdog on Jan 17, 2013 | Reply

keep in mind that right now Kaepernick and Alex are tied, both are 6 2 1/2 this season. Alex has done half the work to get us where we are, so if we don’t win sunday has Kaepernick done more then Alex has!
But thats why they play the games, eh?
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!
