Introducing Alex “The Rhino” Boone

Posted by Scott Kegley on January 12, 2013 – 9:31 AM

RHINO-HEADER

Rhinos are hard-charging and consume roughly 50 pounds of food in a typical meal. But the similarities between that species and offensive linemen don’t end there.

One four-year old black rhino at the San Francisco Zoo will forever be linked to 49ers guard Alex Boone. The rhino is now named “Boone” and Boone has likewise taken on the nickname of “The Rhino.”

Boone met his new rhino last week while playing zookeeper for a day at the San Francisco Zoo. Tasks included cleaning up after the animals, feeding a giraffe, throwing fish to a polar bear, petting a porcupine and walking among the penguins. Then, Boone was able to hand-feed the rhino and arrange his dinner.

Click here to view a photo gallery of Boone’s visit to the zoo or watch the video below.

Boone has also started an Instagram account (@TheRhino75).

Visitors will be able to see “Boone” by visiting the San Francisco Zoo and can also donate to the Alex Boone Animal Education Project, an initiative that brings local youth to the San Francisco Zoo to learn leadership and respect through the theme of animal wellness.

Really nice to see you can see a pro athlete being kind to animals and caring about them. A much, much better role model than Vick (for instance).

Thanks Alex! Hope to see you in the Super Bowl in a couple of weeks..

    Excellent Kaep and Niners.

Kaep you and Montana played basketball so here’s the deal. Loft them over the head and in to the cherry picker gently. Rip the next one. A couple of times you threw too low and flat. Air them out softly but to Randy and Crab 94 mph just fine.

Ya got to know when to hold em know when to fold em. Annd all good QB’s throw ball into audience if know one open 4 obvious reasons.

What poise and greatness with adversity u possess.
Tennis is a great teacher of tactics and strategy. Australian Open on tomorrow.

Great job so far this year. I have been pulling for you to start for the last two years. I knew you would get through the life stuff. I did.
You now have a rhino and the nickname fits you perfectly.
You keep opening holes for Frank and LaMichael all the way to the Super Bowl WIN. Really proud and happy for you.

Very cool! Looks like Alex Boone had a great day at the Zoo. Hopefully he can help raise some awareness of the crisis rhinos are facing in the wild as they are being killed by the hundreds because greedy people want their horns. Rhino horn is not medicine.
