Morning Tailgate: Jan. 11

Posted by Alex Espinoza on January 11, 2013 – 11:38 AM

In the past seven games, Colin Kaepernick has led the 49ers to a 5-2 record and closed out their run as NFC West Champs and the No. 2 seed in the conference. But it’s a whole new ballgame now.

Heading into his first postseason action, Kaepernick will have a chance to show why Jim Harbaugh elected to make the quarterback switch to the young, athletic signal-caller in Week 11. Kaepernick has approached the 5 p.m. Saturday kickoff as business as usual, but realizes the magnitude of the NFC Championship bid that’s on the line.

Daniel Brown of the Bay Area News Group said it’s time to see if Harbaugh’s decision will pay off for the 49ers in earnest.

“Harbaugh pushed in all his chips this season with a midseason change of starting quarterbacks and, on Saturday against the Green Bay Packers, the coach finds out if lucky No. 7 comes up a winner,” Brown wrote. “That’s the jersey number of Colin Kaepernick, the boundlessly talented, minimally experienced quarterback who earned Harbaugh’s endorsement over the cautiously efficient Alex Smith.”

The rest of today’s Morning Tailgate features all the latest links on the Packers matchup, Eddie DeBartolo’s bid for the Hall of Fame and the 49ers kicker situation.

Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times also examined Harbaugh’s decision to tap Kaepernick for the second half of the season.

Ray Ratto of CSNBayArea.com said to expect the unexpected on Saturday at The ‘Stick.

Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group wrote that 49ers players have extra incentive to add a Super Bowl to Randy Moss’ resume.

Pro Football Weekly named Mike Iupati, Andy Lee, Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis to its All-NFL team.

NFL.com also named NaVorro Bowman, Anthony Davis, Dashon Goldson Iupati and Aldon Smith to its All-Pro team.

CSNBayArea.com noted the different San Francisco landmarks that will be lit in red and gold as the 49ers make their Quest for Six.

Mike Sando of ESPN.com broke down the upcoming 49ers-Packers matchup and what to watch for.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle passed along comments from Donte Whitner regarding the strong practices of Justin Smith.

Branch also spoke to former NFL lineman Kevin Mawae about returning from a partial triceps tear.

Monte Poole of the Bay Area News Group said Harbaugh was right in picking Akers over Billy Cundiff.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Branch and Inman discussed the 49ers kickers situation.

Barrows, Branch, Inman and Maiocco wrote about DeBartolo’s Hall of Fame bid as one of 15 finalists.

Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle offered her take on the 49ers keeping Cundiff on the 53-man roster.

Al Saracevic of the San Francisco Chronicle examined Frank Gore’s role in the offense with Kaepernick.

John McTigue of ESPN.com took a statistical look at the 49ers-Packers and said there will a lot of quarterback pressure.

Paul Gutierrez of CSNBayArea.com shared comments from the Packers, who are aware of the tight end tandem of Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker.

Maiocco and Inman passed along Alex Smith’s thoughts as he prepares for the playoffs.

49ers.com’s coverage included a look back at the five 49ers Super Bowl seasons, Harbaugh’s decision to pick David Akers, Bruce Miller’s preparation, Bowman’s thoughts on the defense and the scheduled game entertainment for Candlestick Park. We also brought you a Weekly Conversation with Carlos Rogers, Jim Harbaugh’s press conference (video / transcript) and Press Passes from Miller, Bowman and Alex Smith.

Phatablahblah: You have been proven WRONG with an astounding thud! I know your ego won’t allow you to accept that & you will try to point us towards you said this and that about Kaepernick positively to dance around us and convince us that you merely questioned the changed. You even tried to plant yourself an “out” before the game by saying even if Kap wins…blahblahblah so you have an escape clause…WE ALL KNOW THE TRUTH. You threw out all these stats repeatly and were relentless in trying to convince us all that sticking with Smith is what Harbaugh should do. Although stats are not to be ignored and taken under consideration there is much, much more to football and life than to put sooo much faith and decisions on stats. There are intangibles to help the perceptive and very intelligent see the less obvious factors on making the correct decisions. Those decisions can be very risky and come with many critics but they are based on something you will never understand: GUTS & TRUE INTELLIGENCE (much more than big words & numers). Harbaugh knew exactly what he was doing and some of us on here told you exactly that. So take that pill and swallow that pride because we all know all that time you spent on trying to convince us Harbaugh was wrong was time wasted. Oh yeah…one more thing…HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHHAHAHHAHHAHAHHAHA!

  55. By dave g. on Jan 13, 2013 | Reply

And I also want to point out that I have always liked Alex and last offseason strongly believed we should resign him. It was the smart thing to do. There were those who said we should drop him and sign Matt Flynn or Peyton Manning. I always said sign Alex & I know looking back that it was the right decision. Kap was still unproven in big games and the Flynn thing is obvioulsy a joke. My concern on Peyton was the risk on his health and even though he is a household name it was my strong feeling THAT HE CHOKES in playoffs. Peyton is an excellent example of great statics but with the exception of his one SB year he has a history of choking in playoffs, thats an intangible that very few see BUT I for one am happy we did not sign him. Alex is really good and I still feel that way. The difference though from what I have see with Kap is: Alex can be a TOP 10 QB, and I truly belive that BUT KAP can be more than TOP 10-KAP CAN BE THE BEST! I am very serious about this: Anyone can say someone is best after the fact, BUT I am saying it right now. KAP CAN BE THE BEST (not just based on yesterdays game)..what I have seen is a man with a skillset that makes it incredibly difficult for any defense to stop him & they all know that. And now he has proven that he has the intangibles very early on that the pressure of playoffs affects him positively & that is a trait even the very good ones sometimes lack. DO NOT UNDER ESTIMATE this. Its what made Montana the best. YOUNG WAS GREAT and had better stats than Montana BUT when it truly counted NO ONE WAS BETTER THAN MONTANA. Simmer on the importance of that.

Well I wanted Gore up the gut, Roman to call an aggressive game plan, thought we could do that … But I had no idea that Kaepernick had that in him, 185! hell that what RB’s dream of! Kid makes mistakes but he backs`em up, great all around team effort. Looks like we may travel to Atlanta, I remember the last time we played a playoff game there with Mooch. If not for Garrison Hearst breaking his ankle … who knows?

I was torn as to who I wanted to win this afternoon. Part of me wanted to prove to Seattle once and for all who is the better team. On the other hand, I like the matchup with the Falcons. I think we have a great shot at winning that game., even though we go on the road. That being said I am so glad Seattle lost. The media would be talking ALL WEEK LONG about how Wilson is the next greatest thing and how he came back from 20 pts down to win blah blah blah. Hope u enjoyed your long flight home Pete!!!!! J Smith…THANK YOU for proving me wrong. I will never doubt that u will play again!!!! To play the entire game with that injury is beyond impressive. The post season stress continues but man I love it!!!!!

49erdefense2012: Yes..I remember you and me sticking up for Harbaughs decisions from the very beginning when others thought they knew better than him on QB decisions. YES we both said Peyton was a choke artist in the big game and once again he did it. I am so glad we did not sign him and there is no way he would have done what KAP did…NO WAY! KAP is the man! And it is not based on just one game. He has the potential to be the best..REALLY!

See below what Charles Woodson says about KAP…as I said before defences are much more fearful to face him than they are of Alex…and thats nothing against Alex because I believe in Alex, but it is reality.

Some of you will think I am crazy or that I am biased or some other description of me, BUT as I have always done and will always do is not fear putting myself out there because I am a confident man with no fear. What I want to say is if a GM was hired to draft for an expansion team and could select any QB from any team to start for them Colin Kaepernick would be chosen over all others in the league. ALL OTHERS! YES I JUST SAID THAT!

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000125635/article/packers-gm-on-colin-kaepernick-that-was-special

Anyone who says Colin Kaepernick would be the first quarterback to go off of an NFL Redraft is a star-struck idiot.

    Period.

The kid breaks a couple records playing out of a fundamentally unorthodox offensive scheme that NFL defensive coordinators haven’t adjusted to, and some pundits and fans alike are willing to consider him better than quarterbacks who played better than he did all year, as well as young players who are well on the path to a Hall of Fame nomination.

I’ll give the kid due credit for an excellent performance last night. I won’t grant him Best in the League status. He doesn’t deserve that.

  84. By phatalerror on Jan 13, 2013 | Reply

Packers’ defensive back Charles Woodson had some comments after last night’s game:

“We didn’t make any adjustments… I just think when the game is going the way it is, you’ve got to try something different. It’s hard to just continue to do the same thing over and over again and continue to get burned. … We need to figure out: Could we have done something differently as far as our game plan was concerned?”

With that, this article says what every Packers’ fan and more discerning viewers of Kaepernick’s performance noticed:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000125603/article/packers-have-soulsearching-to-do-after-blowout-loss

If Dom Capers just coordinated his last game for the Green Bay Packers, would it make you think less of Colin Kaepernick? Would it force acknowledgement that the Packers’ coaching didn’t put their defense in a position to defend? Even if Capers manages to keep his job on the basis of a strong 2012 regular season campaign, his mis-leading of a strong defense against an unorthodox offense in one high-profile playoff game was egregious in its degree of failure, and it will be talked about for the rest of the Packers’ off-season.

I want to emphasize for the sake of reasonableness: Colin bounced back strongly from one of the worst post-season starts I’ve ever seen from a 49ers quarterback. He played his brand of football successfully. But with that, he clearly benefited from a matchup against a coordinator that has consistently given up huge points to opponents that ought not to have put up so many points. You have to accept Colin Kaepernick’s performance within that context. To do otherwise is unreasonable.

    Go 49ers.

Phatablahblah: It has nothing to do with being star struck. Anyone can say someone is good after the the fact, it takes someone with the foresight to say it ahead of time. I dare you to name one QB right now who is as dangerous for a defense to prepare for as is Kaepernick..Aside from the 1 pick, his performance was OUTSTANDING and I am proud to call him our QB. Lets keep in mind KAP has not even hit his peak BUT every football experts jaw dropped to what he was doing to teh 11th rank defense in the league. The way his team mates gravitated to him and they way him through was spectacular and the only reason why you debating it is you reaching to protect that fragile pride. YES…I WILL SAY IT AGAIN. That guy is more physically gifted than any QB in the league right now and I am not going to let household names cloud me from my observations. Only the simple minded will hang their hat on proven because its safe and does not take foresight to see before it happens! You remember I said this…he will be a FANTASY FOOTBALL #1 QB in the next 2 years and a SB MVP.

    Phatal,
This is not a bashing post. Even though I was strongly in favor of the QB switch, I can still understand why someone would feel strong loyalty for Alex. Although I dont agree with your views, I’m curious to hear your response on a few questions.

    1. You stated “Colin bounced back strongly from one of the worst post-season starts I’ve ever seen from a 49ers quarterback.” This was Colin’s first post-season start, so are you referring to Alex’s performance in last year’s Conf Championship?

    2. Based on Colin’s performance this weekend, do you still believe that Alex gives us a better chance to win a championship?

    3. What would you like to see Colin and/or the rest of the offense be able to accomplish before you’ll say he’s the right choice for the position?

  99. By hmrhead1 on Jan 14, 2013 | Reply

I’ll be the first to admit that I did not follow Colin at Nevada. I didnt know what potential he had beyond watching him in pre-season. I just wanted the switch at QB because I felt that Alex was hurting our offense. Yes, he had a high completion percentage, but our WRs were virtually non-existent for the majority of our games. Many were calling Crabtree a bust. After 8 years of mediocre offenses, I just felt it was time for a change. The fact that Colin has performed so well is just an added bonus. I dont agree that he’s the #1 young gun in the league today, but in my opinion, he has to be somewhere near the top of the list. We havent had this type of big play potential in our offense since Young to TO. After a decade of offensive mediocrity, it’s nice to win games on this side of the ball.

You know what their problem was…IT WAS KAP! Even the GM of the Packers had to say it. Are you kidding? Have you been watching what KAP can do through the air and with his feet. IT IS AMAZING! And he is our QB! Get ready to hear many others tell you this in the future and you will have my voice ringing in your eyes as you keep swallowing that pride of yours! HAHAHAHA!
