Morning Tailgate: Jan. 7

Posted by Alex Espinoza on January 7, 2013 – 10:47 AM

It’s been nearly four months since the 49ers kicked off the 2012 season with a 30-22 victory against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. By virtue of their 24-10 victory over Minnesota on Saturday, the Packers are headed to Candlestick for the 5 p.m. PT Saturday kickoff against the 49ers in the NFC Divisional Round.

Aaron Rodgers led Green Bay to an 11-5 record and the NFC North title in the regular season, earning the No. 3 seed in the postseason. The 49ers and Packers and no strangers to each other in the playoffs. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com took a look back at the rich postseason history between the two proud franchises over the years.

“When the third-seeded Green Bay Packers visit Candlestick Park on Saturday to face the No. 2 seed 49ers, it’ll be their sixth postseason meeting,” Maiocco wrote. “But it’ll be the first time Chico native Aaron Rodgers has played in San Francisco in his career. And it’ll be the first playoff appearance for Colin Kaepernick.”

The rest of today’s Morning Tailgate looks ahead to the playoff matchup with the Pack as the 49ers open their Quest for Six.

Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group previewed the 49ers-Packers.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee examined Colin Kaeperinck’s role heading into his first postseason game.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle looked ahead to the weekend and passed along comments from Rodgers about Kaepernick.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated named Ahmad Brooks, Anthony Davis, Dashon Goldson and Mike Iupati to his 2012 All-Pro team.

Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote about Rodgers’ upcoming first visit to Candlestick Park.

Maiocco discussed the Week 1 rematch between San Francisco and Green Bay.

Inman looked at how the 49ers have fared against Rodgers in the past.

Branch examined the differences between both teams since their Week 1 contest.

Mike Sando highlighted five storylines to keep an eye on this weekend.

Sando looked at the NFC rankings on offense and defense heading into the postseason.

Branch and Maiocco discussed the playoff potential of Vernon Davis.

Vic Ketchman of Packers.com analyzed the changes in the 49ers and Packers since Week 1.

LaMichael James was one of 11 rookies to be profiled in Gatorade’s season-long Everything to Prove video series.

Branch discussed Greg Roman’s ties to other football personnel throughout the league that attended John Carroll University.

Maiocco spoke to LB Parys Haralson, who is recovering from a triceps injury that kept him out of the entire 2012 season.

WE MUST SOMEHOW ON DEFENSE MAKE MORE NOISE THAN Seattle. RG if not injured would surely pulled off a victory. Seattle does not look so good when playing a Calibre team!!

I think the best Super Bowl would be Brady vs. the Kaep. Navarro on Rogers all day with Ahmad. 2 men on Clay Matthews all day.

You stop Aaron Rogers get him out of the game or hold hoim to 3 Touchdowns we win. No field goals Kaep lets win with 7″s!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think a history lesson is needed here. the packers are 4-1 all time in the playoffs against the 49ers,,with the one lone win in the playoffs coming in the 1998 wild card round at candlestick, and that game would also have been a loss if they had instant replay being used again in the league at that time,,,JERRY RICE CLEARLY fumbled the ball on the game winning drive and the ball should have been given to green bay,, but it wasnt, and we went on to win that game.,,a different team a different season, we need to break this chain of playoff losses against the packers,,our biggest nemesis since the days of our playoff games against the cowgirls

  9. By 49erdefense2012 on Jan 7, 2013 | Reply

and as far as making more noise than the seakawks fans,,Its nearly impossible to try and produce that kind of noise at cavernous candlestick park. seattles stadium WAS BUILT to amplify sound. paul allen spent a gazillion dollars or so with just the development of the stadium, designed to amplify sound. here at candlestick we have alot of fans who sit around WAITING for something to happen instead of TRYING to make something happen. believe me, it is a work in progress. but the last home game of the regular season against the cardinals ,,in my section,,I got alot of the ” sitters ” as we call them to at least scream and yell even if they didnt feel like getting up and shouting. you gotta remember that our fan base has ALOT of senior citizens and corporations, who sell their tickets throughout the regular season and that is one of the reasons why candlestick on a game by game average has alot of the opposing teams fans there on game day….THE NEW STADIUM WILL BE DIFFERENT!!!! A NEW GENERATION OF 49ERS FANS WILL BE SEEN THIS WEEK-END AT CANDLESTICK MAKING AS MUCH NOISE AS WE CAN AND YOU AT HOME WATCHING ON TV WILL HEAR IT,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST SF 49ERS 2012

Last I checked it was pretty dammm loud at the Stick against the Saints and Giants…. Our fans dialed it up…
Key to this game is like the last time we played them, pressure from our front four…

  11. By bow53 on Jan 7, 2013 | Reply

49er defense is right, theres gunna be alot of cheese head at the stick come sunday night, they luv there team as much as we luv the 49ers,its gonna be one hell of a game, but for some reason i feel great or i may say confident in our chances of pulling this off, why??cuz’ were well rested, fresh leg and i’m pretty sure, J.H. is anticipating the the packers are one were facing in the divisional, so we are well prepared for this coming slugfest, defense and offense i’m sure are also well aware about the packers coming to town,on akers he has a long days to gather his thoughts and mind to focus here…and may i say again will be alright……one more thing G-RO is gonna open up the playbook here, watch and see……defense got nothing to say,SOLID AS EVER………..

  12. By 49erdefense2012 on Jan 7, 2013 | Reply

@ bayareafanatic, you gotta be there to know what im talking about,,im talking about keeping the noise constant, when your watching the game at home on tv its very mis-leading, th station broadcasting the game will reduce crowd noise in order for you to hear the commentary, and at times vice a versa,,I have come home from a game and started watching the game I was just at said out loud, it didnt sound that loud at the game,,and many of my other tailgating friends have said the same thing, like after an oppossing team gets a 1st down the crowd noise has a clear decline. I been doing this a long time, going to games, making noise. the playoffs are a different monster altogether, and if you had noticed I said ” regular season, your reffering to a few playoff games. im talking about ALL THE TIME, my post was a rebutal to someone saying we need to be as loud as seattle fans are,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST ,,,SF49ERS 2012

I ‘am a die hard 49ers fan last week I was at candlestick park for the final regular season game however in order for us to beat the packers I urge all the 49ers fans to be as loud as they ever been the team is going to need it I don’t want to call the fans soft but they where last week so I’m calling out the fans this week cheer loud for our 49ers go 49ers .

We can’t have any regrets in February, sitting at home watching again … it all starts now!!!
I think when teams are able to run on us, we lose. The line of scrimmage for both Defense and Offense will dictate if we win or not. We can’t give Rodgers time, but Kaep is deadly with time – offense and defensive line!!
Hopefully we can blitz a little more instead of being so vanilla with our defensive schemes?? I know base is pretty cool, but we gotta mix it up and keep the other team off balance & guessing.
3 game win streak starts this weekend – No holding back, lets go 49ers!!!

  21. By David Acevedo on Jan 7, 2013 | Reply

Ok…. lets be realistic…… if we want to win we need another kicker… this is one of those games dicided by a field goal…. a field goal will make the diference and if we play with akers a guy that make 2 fieldgoals and missed 3 we are Fk!. Coach please give this other guy a chanse to kick the field goals and have akers on the bench…. please…. we want the ninners to go to the super bowl and akers its not the kind of kicker for a team that wants to win a super bowl

We don’t need to keep beating this dead horse, but honestly, I think most of you are totally freaking off base to be attacking Phatalerror – (previous morning tailgates) You rip him for submitting stats… some people like stats some don’t. Usually you like stats if they support your claim. His stats, while accurate, don’t support your claim, but that is no reason to attack him. His responses are always respectful and just give support for his side of an argument. Most of us don’t bother giving support for our arguments – we just make completely unsubstantiated claims. You rip him for being too emotional about the situation. Completely ridiculous – his posts are almost completely devoid of emotion. You can’t rip him for posting stats and then also rip him for being too emotional. Makes no sense. Then right after you (and there are several of you) rip him for being too emotional, you call him a “hater”, a “know-it-all”, a “bean counter” (that one has to hurt – I don’t know how he’ll recover from that), you accuse him of not living close to the stadium (haven’t figured out what that has to do with anything yet), you accuse him of being a “girl” (as if only men are allowed to have opinions on football teams), you claim that he’s a “bandwagon fan” (why a bandwagon fan would put this much effort and thought into a post – I don’t know), ect. Etc. So, you rip him for being too emotional and then get all worked up and start calling him names. That is almost the very definition of hypocrisy. This is a blog. We are supposed to vent our opinions on this blog. As much as I can’t stand to read the posts of 11yearswithalex, I’ve never advocated for him to stop posting. He has a right to his opinion just as any of us. The difference with Phatal is that he actually backs his claims up. You may not like it, but you have to respect it. Or, at least if you were intellectually honest with yourself, you should. All here know that I love Alex (as much as a grown heterosexual man can love his team’s QB). I love him almost as if he was my own son. So I AM emotional about it and I don’t know why that is a bad thing. I wanted Alex to lead this team to the superbowl because I felt he deserved it after all that he’s gone through. There’s no need to call me names, etc, etc. we all know where everyone stands, but that’s MY opinion of MY team on MY team’s blog. For some of you that’s ridiculous. You only care about winning. That’s an opinion. I think routing for the team only, and not the players that wear the jersey, is not nearly as fun. So I’ve invested in Alex. 7 years of investment. Now, I’ve also invested in Justin Smith and Frank Gore, and Patrick Willis and Adam Snyder and so on, and so on, and so on, so for their sake of course I’m rooting for Kaep. I hope he does well, I hope we win the superbowl, but it won’t taste as sweet to me as it would have if Alex wasn’t on the bench. Keep up your posts Phatal. Every time you are criticized from the horde for throwing out too many facts, it only shows that they have no facts of their own.

I meant from 5 yards out from the endzone the beast 6ft242 Anthony Dixon will not be denied in a playoff game. He runns between tackles good. . Head for endzone then cut in. No one including Gore should run straight up the gut. Too predictable and you can get severely hurt for the fowolling game and the big dance in Norlins!!!!!!!! Mke that typo say not bee denied!!!!!!!!!! from 5 yards out from end zone Crab and frank can get em there but youngster has tree trunk thighs and 24 year old energy giving frank aspot occasionally. Saving him for the big Dance. Let’s not depend on field goals anyway., remenicient of the Kyle William Giants game and Drew Breeze game. We now Have Hall of Famer Randy Moss wanting his 3rd Lombardi. Michael wanting his first ring. Stay in the now. Play for all 60 minutes. You all have a full year to heal. Leave it all on the field. Take Rogers out the game.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take hat any way u want.

Aaron will throw to anybody all 16. Bruce Miller has great hands catch it before u run and good run after catch.

Sorry Temper…over the past several years I have not thrown out very many stats as they are mostly meaningless unless it a W-L.

However, when phatalblahblahblah started to get overbearing, I too have thrown out stats to the contrary…but they have been completely ignored when not serving the purpose they were trying to make. Most of us do not have the time to get into that BS and don’t want to.

Kaep is the man and has done everything asked of him…otherwise he would not still be starting…

temper11: You have somehow twisted what Phatal was trying to do and what others said to him. You are missing that behind all his “copy & pasted” stats which any of us can pull up is a person who is just trying to convince everyone that Alex should be starting. Look anyone who has been on long enough knows I have been and remain a huge supporter of Alex but I am not going to let that cloud the reality. And temper11 your defense of Phatal comes from that same underlining agenda of being upset that Alex is not the started and you even magnify that in your closing statements. The point is whether you like it or not: Kap is our guy and we need to support him. He is a young man who has worked very hard to get here. I appreciate all Alex has done but if you want to take the emotional route, why can’t a good upstanding your man like Kap be appreciated for what he has done? He is a good guy and I am proud to call him our QB just as much as I was proud of ALex. And in regards to OGRE, he is just “playa hatin” cuz he has been slapped silly too many times by those going against Phatal. Biased agendas is what all this is about: You want Alex and are whining. Just get over it and enjoy where we at. My God people we are in the final 8 playing at home and you still b!tching! GeeeeeeZ

I will ignore the Tourette’s syndrome. It is amazing how many people are motivated out of the almighty “Protecting the Ego” syndrome. Everything they type is based on that. I have always stood up for Alex and wanted Alex but when a move is made that is better, instead of protecting the ego, I embrace the move because Kap has greatness written all over him. Us winning this next game is the BIGGEST PRIORITY right now. Check your egos at the door and support our starting QB so we can kick some green & yellow @ss. Yeah..green and yellow NOT green and gold. I know yellow does not sound good Packer fans but guess what its is YELLOW!

  51. By temper11 on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

Phatal may indeed want Alex to play – I know that I do, but I don’t think that is his point – so you are missing it. His point is that Kaep isn’t playing at a remarkably higher level than was Alex as everyone seems to want to believe. That’s it. If you listen to the TV pundits and the long-time Alex detractors, they’d have you believe that the 49ers are playing so much better now than they were then. His numbers are just trying to show the falsity in these claims. Doesn’t mean that we want Kaep to fail, it just means we are trying – albeit in a very limited capacity – to protect Alex’s tattered legacy as he exits stage left in the off season. For those of you who only route for the jersey regardless of who’s wearing it, you don’t understand that impulse. For some of us, who feel that we have bled with Alex, and not because of him, we will not simply move on – he deserves far more than this, but this blog represents just about our only outlet. So deal with it.

  52. By 49erdefense2012 on Jan 8, 2013 | Reply

that last post of yours temper is f,u,c,k,i,n,g fantasy land temper, you feel that you have bled with alex? I HAVE GONE TO EVERY SINGLE HOME GAME SINCE ALEX WAS DRAFTED. HAVE YOU?. have you spent the 30 bucks per game times 10 games a season since alex was drafted? for parking? the 100′s of 100′s of 100′s of dollars spent on season tickets? have you? I HAVE, I have watched alex struggle MIGHTILY for most of his career with the 49ers. go back and look at the morning tailgate blogs since late august, you will see I supported alex 100% I even said after the lions game that NO we should not go to kap because he wasnt ready, then when harbaugh made the switch I was TOTALLY against it , after watching the bears game I still was against it because we shredded the bears with their back-up qb in. it wasnt untill the saints game that I began to realize WITH MY OWN TWO EYES, why harbaugh made the switch. so, although I think in my HEART that alex has earned the chance to lead this team to the super bowl, with my HEAD, I understand why coach harbaugh went with kap, so when you say you feel like youve bled with alex, come back and talk to me when youve spent 1,000′s of dollars ” bleeding with alex ” and then I will listen.
stats dont show alot other than things that have already been done. let me say this cleary,,,STATS DONT SHOW YOU WHAT MIGHT BE. your living in the past with stats. your eyes tell you what the future could be, and OUR CAOCH HARBAUGH see’s kap being able to do more for our team that alex, and no stat you or anyone else can post can de-bunk that…

dont mistake caps for yelling, its my way to emphazise certain key words in sentences, and its not an attack on you personally thats just my personality, I agree with alot things about alex but I also knew long ago that alex would never get back into the starting line-up unless kap got hurt, and so we move on, you can be upset about alex’s demotion as much as the next guy but posting endless amount of meaningless stats to try and prove harbaugh wrong for making the switch is redundant. it wont change a thing, and a certain someone who posts all these stats said so them selves that the reason he does it is so that at the end of the season he can be right about all the things he has posted. WHY GIVE A $HIT WHAT SOMEONE ELSE THINKS? I said right from the gate he wants to prove he was right.

and others have backed up their opinons with facts as well, you can crunch numbers up as small as you want, there is no stat that can prove if coach made the right choice going with kap instead of alex, the only way to end the argument is wether or not kaepernick can lead this team beyond the nfc championship game. im sorry but phatal is wrong, for all his stat posting he cant see how easy it is. the guy is a nutbag, trying to disprove anyone who doesnt agree with him. go back through the last 7 days of morningtaligate blogs , you will see anytime someone posted stats that lessen some of the stats phatalblahblahblah has posted, he posts some other stat trying to prove the other stat wrong, see? you can crunch numbres all day, take a look at my post on jan 8 about greg roman.
