Morning Tailgate: Nov. 29

Posted by Alex Espinoza on November 29, 2012 – 11:21 AM

The 49ers are no strangers to quality quarterbacks. Dating back to the likes of Y.A. Tittle and John Brodie to Joe Montana and Steve Young, San Francisco has been spoiled with signal-callers throughout the years. The 2012 49ers are lucky to have two players under center that have led the team to big victories: Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith.

A huge contingent of media gathered at 49ers headquarters on Wednesday, as coach Jim Harbaugh revealed Kaepernick will receive the start this Sunday in St. Louis, his third straight for the team. The decision to name the second-year emerging star as the quarterback was dissected every which way by the media, including Tim Kawakami of the Bay Area News Group.

“QB coach Geep Chryst and OC Greg Roman are certainly hands-on and deeply involved in all parts of the QB play,” Kawakami wrote. “But I think we have to give most of the credit for this to Harbaugh–who did some things with Andrew Luck, I seem to recall. Harbaugh has a fine focus on the QB spot, and the guy can flat-out coach the position.”

Today’s Morning Tailgate rounds up all the Kaepernick coverage, Pro Bowl voting leaders, Santa Clara Stadium news and more.

The 49ers currently have four players leading their respective positions in 2013 NFC Pro Bowl voting: ILB Patrick Willis (141,518), G Mike Iupati (103,460), K David Akers (91,041) and ST C.J. Spillman (55,426). Make sure to #Vote49ers at 49ers.com/ProBowl.

49ers CEO Jed York spoke with Fortune about the high-tech new Santa Clara Stadium.

Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group broke down the 49ers QB decision by Harbaugh.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com chronicled the evolution of the QB situation throughout the season.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee wrote that Harbaugh went with Kaepernick’s hot hand over Smith’s steady one.

Mark Purdy of the Bay Area News Group gave his take on the Kaepernick decision.

Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle detailed the hard work Kaepernick has put in since becoming a part of the 49ers.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle described the differences between Kaepernick and Smith.

Maiocco passed along locker room reaction from Kaepernick’s teammates.

Barrows wrote about Kaepernick’s mentality and how it differs from that of Smith.

Mike Sando of ESPN.com discussed the future of the 49ers QB situation.

Maiocco passed along a great sideline conversation between Kaepernick and Randy Moss that took place on Sunday in New Orleans.

Barrows commented on Aldon Smith winning the NFC Defensive Player of the Month award.

Kyle Bonagura of CBSSports.com noted that A.J. Jenkins and LaMichael James could earn their first NFL playing action this weekend.

Maiocco updated the health of David Akers and Delanie Walker.

Sando offered a breakdown of the NFL concussion testing protocol.

49ers.com’s daily coverage included a look at Kaepernick, Aldon Smith, Jenkins and James, a weekly award for the o-line, conference calls with Rams coach Jeff Fisher and CB Cortland Finnegan, and press passes with Harbaugh and Kaepernick.

after reading some of the comments on csn bay area dot com most folks think alex is a complete bust, and wouldnt have had any success without harbaugh, I guess they have forgotten the promise alex showed when the traitor norv turner was the OC.and signed with the chargers RIGHT BEFORE THE SEASON STARTED. it would have been the 2nd year under turner for the offense. even gore asked him to stay. the way gore, vernon and alex played under turner gave us hope. then the circus and jokes of OC’s started. I think alex will have more job offers this off season than last year he has shown for 2 straight years now that he can be a good qb for a team

for most of fans that have gone to every single home game for the last 15 years, we have seen the worst and best of alex smith. we are also looking forward to seeing what CK7 will bring us. some of you fellow bloggers should really get out to ‘the ‘stick to watch this team play. the last 2 years when alex has been announced with the team before home games there has been nothing but cheers and screams of lets go alex, as opposed to the previous 5 when all you heard were boo’s. CK7 is getting the same reception, nothing but cheers and lets go kapper. for my part, I want to see CK7 just oblierate the opposing teams secondary, im a fan, no im a fanatic,a go to every single home game no matter what even the day after leg surgery and staples. some have said that the limitations of alex have slowed the progressions of this offense of G-RO’S, I tend to agree with that to a point. but not that it cost us a bunch of games ,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,,

now the the qb situation is seattled, the coach has spoken, wrong or right decision as a loyal 49er fan we need to embrace that., sometimes we need to accept whats in front of us and what we have…now moving forward to the next game, i’m hoping will have a diff. energy, than the last time we meet the lambs, i’m sure its gunna diff. attitude, meaning agressive plays, like w/ did the bears and the saints…i have gut feeling will be alright in this game…….

Agreed on as a Loya Fan.

All I can say is I believe in Harbaugh and Coach Harbaugh at least restored A. Smith’s reputation as a very excellent QB that NO ONE can deny.

    GO NINERS!!!!!

53, “now the the qb situation is settled” I don’t think it is? Am I wrong, but I thought coach said that kap will start the game against the Rams. But he didn’t say that Kap, was going to finish the season as the starter? or did he?
As and for the Rams, you can bet that Fisher has a game plan for Kap, this will be a test! The Rams may be weak on offense, but they have talent on defense!

hey dog thats the beauty of r coach, won’t spell beans, let them think twice whos , who…he should’nt annouce earlier who’ll start but the circus is coming in, believe me i haven gave up on A.S.,will see how this unfold, and i’m not saying ck7 is bad , his a good darn qb. experience is what he needs and his getting that….

guys oh man come on alex would have been burried by the bears as they were intent on blitzing the qb wich alex does not handle very well at all …CK checked out of calls as he saw those blitzes and called runs that burnt the bears every time …alex does not have those reads he plays mr. ok coach what ever you say coach and runs the play that was given and finds the dump off ……saints game please if CK wasnt marching down the field and scoreing as opposed to alex who would have went 3 and out at least 3 times before doing anything …and we would have been down like 3 scores at that point …….alex sure has a high completion because he throws 2 yard checkdowns all day …..and all thses wins that everyone has placed as oh the alex has won evey games he played ……….what ever

  9. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

in all the back and forth qb talk, why has no one brought up the sublect of when your qb is running more with the ball the potential for turn-overs increases 100%?
I saw a play against the saints where kap ran an qb option read and kept the ball instead of handing it off to gore, everyone can see gore looking for the ball on the ground clearly indicating gore thought he should have gotten the ball. thats the kind of variable alex doesnt bring. he wouldnt have been running a play like that. G-RO wouldnt have even called that play if alex had been at qb. I dont care who the qb of my team is as long as we keep winning, even if its an ugly win, but ugly wins means there are problems I agree with coach going with the guy who he personally picked to be his qb project for the future, cant say as I agree with the timing of it, but coach sees things at practice which we or the media doesnt and has gone with CK7,,,to say we HAVE been a better eam with kap at qb is arguable, to say we WILL be a better team with kap at qb is presumptious

  10. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

CK has all better skills and trying to say that oh cutler didnt start and the saints have no defense at their dome is rediculous CK is extending plays to move the ball on 3rd down wich alex would throw the checkdown and walk off smileing that he did good coach ……..and you will get your wish alex will go to another team …lol maybe and i am sure it will be the cards or or maybe the jets lol ……the niners have groomed alex they should try and trade bait him on the block and see if they can pick up at least a 2nd or 3rd rounder for alex lol….instead of giving his walking papers ……..and yes the coach traded up for CK a 2nd rounder who is blossoming in his 2nd year …we should be so lucky to have a really good young QB with a chip and a dream …CK worked hard for his shot and continues to do so ……..give him the credit he deserves ……..instead of trying to hold on to a wounded horse

Harbaugh made the right decision with Kap, he wants to win it all for the whole team, for both QBs, for the great special teams and defense, for coaches, for fans, and for himself. I personally enjoy watching the 9ers play competitive football, and want the 9ers to have the most super bowl wins of all NFL teams, that is it. No one is saying that Smith isn’t an excellent QB also, he is! It is just that he isn’t better that Kap from most people’s perception as of today, and unless Kap proves that he isn’t as good as his last three games, I believe coach will and should continue to play Kap. Alex can either feel sorry for himself or be a team player and be ready as a backup, help the team win the SB, start gaining experience as a coach on the sidelines (he might be smart enough to be an NFL coach one day), and most of all he should try to get better so this doesn’t happen to him again with the 9ers or another team next year. The truth is this: if there is any question that a team might have a better QB as a backup, there will be a controversy, I don’t care what the coaches, players, analyst call this, it is a controversy. The only time you don’t have a controversy is when you are 100% sure tha the #1 QB is the #1 QB in that team.

  12. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

i mean if he lost those games and was still starting i would say well hmmm not sure maybe he needs more time …….CK went into the saints house and handed it to em TD for TD with brees …….alex would have gone 3 and out so many times the score would have been 35 to 0 by the time alex got us a field goal try …..did you watch the saints game …..the whole team has responded to CK from the offense to the defense as well as special teams not allowing a good kick returner to burn us …………now they just need to make sure we dont get fake punted on again ..and again man that blew made the niners look like a bunch of highschool kids

  13. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

and yes the coach has made it clea it is colins to loose ….that is great coaching a young kid he keeps him motivated and also keeps him in check to make sure of his throws and reads ……great coaching ….seek and you shall recieve….hard work does pay off ….and hey kid we traded up to get you dont let me down ……all things that the coach has implied to his guy ……..as for alex he has made it possible for alex to maybe get on another team …….highly doubtfull and def not until after the draft and maybe even first preseason game …..just my opinion on that ….i think they should trade him for a pick but ehh time will tell ……you tell me to accept the QB and move on well now practice what you preach and we shall welcome you with open arms …….lol GOOOOOOOO NINERS ……

ha ha ha ha ha… now you (11years) are saying that Alex can’t make reads! He’s been criticized for mostly being a good game manager (making reads is what he’s best at and foolishly criticized most for).

td for td with brees? he only had two the defense had the other two. Both QBs are great and I am cool with either one, I just feel for Alex because he was playing his best football and still ends up on the bench. NO choice but to see how it plays out and either way I’m glad the niners are deep at every single position on the field.

  17. By temper11 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

Good lord 11years. If only you had the ability to read… I’ve not read a single word, from any supporters of A Smith on here, that has anything but support for Kap. Not a single freaking word. We do support him. I hope he turns out to be the greatest QB of our time. I question the timing of the change. Can an Alex Smith hater that has the ability read and comprehend the English language please step forward and give us someone new to debate with? It’s no fun putting forth a completely logical and well thought out post only to have your opponent fumble around with, mis-interpret and then completely misstate the most basic of your ideas. Blogging doesn’t allow for the use of pretty pictures, so it’s hard to hold 11year’s attention.

I will preface my comment by stating this-Ii really like colin as a qb.I think he has unlimited pontential as a starter in this league for many years to come. When we drafted him i studied his youtube cutups and started to compare him to my childhood idol RANDALL CUNNINGHAM. So thats obvious high praise, however when we drafted Alex Smith i was not as sold on him. Granted i was bit younger and Utah football wasnt really on my radar (sec country), but as time went on and Alex went thru highly chronicled ebbs and flows of his career, i have really taken a personal liking to him on and off the field. I think about the booing he had to deal with against philadelphia a few years ago, and how he tuned everybody out and performed down the stretch of that game. I think about the monday night football game a few years ago against the saints, when he brought us back and converted the two point conversion(drew brees came back and won with a fg). also the many clutch moments he had last year ie, detroit, philly, cincinnatti, new york, new orleans, etc… and i have to say i feel extremely bad about this decision by harbaugh. i have defended everything harbaugh has or hasnt done to this point, but i think this may be one thing he will look back on and regret doing. kinda like ditka not getting walter payton in the endzone in 85. just from a moral standpoint this horrible.I mean u preach the “whos got it better than us” family , 49er way. doctrine then you backstab your team captain. alex smith was just the nfc player of the week!!! and a concussion takes his job! that doesnt bode well in any locker room or place of business. imagine if jed york would have told harbaugh the following ” i know you just had minor heart surgery, but while you were out greg roman kicked around a few good ideas about what we should do against the bears soooo, he is gonna be our new head coach moving forward, or atleast until you are informed otherwise. but get healthy and stay ready jim!’ sounds ridiculous but that is exactly what just happened.

  24. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

lol stabbed alex …wow ….little drama on the board today ……..look alex knew when they used 3 picks to move up and get kaepernick that his days were numbered …..he should be thankful for the coach holding his hand and letting him ruin perfectly good plays with a 2 yard dump off because he cant throw down field then smile as he blows another 3rd down conversion …..and yes in the saints game colin scored first then brees scored then colin scored again only to have brees score and then colin threw a pick and then we returned 2 for TD’s that seems to be td for td or yeah you just figure if you say it it is true right ………blah blah you guys have been so entrenched by the niners lack of anything for 15 years that you latch on to a average QB because he took money and did nothing ….stayed and took more money and then had a coach hold his hand ….and then he wanted more money …..didnt like what he was offered and went out to get more …only to find out no one wants a checkdown QB and came crawling back to the niners ….only to watch them trade up for a QB

ll try again to get through on this blog . . . FIRST, my heart goes out to Kyle and Kendall, and my thoughts and prayers are for you both to make a full recovery and come back stronger than ever . . . remember Garrison Hearst and look at Adrian Peterson . . . SECOND for Aldon, you have been blessed with so many natural talents and skills and a team that prides itself on excellence; but look to Reggie White, not only as a leader on the field, but off the field as well, what was his life like, what kind of a person was Reggie White . . . come on Aldon, we are pulling for you to develop as a true man of God, a man of integrity and excellence, on and off the field ! You don’t have to look far . . . look to your left at Patrick Willis, a great role model for all of our 49ers. THIRD, the Rams of St Louis – don’t fall into the trap of foolishness that led to our foolishness . . . if someone leads his team to fake a punt, no, fake two punts, from deep in their own territory, that will come back to bite him and get him drummed out of the NFL and not even Pop Warner League will hire him. Absolute nonsense, unless you play into that foolishness . . . play the game it was meant to be played ! From the opening kickoff to the final gun . . . with full awareness, zeal and intensity ! No mare sleep walk . . . and it won’t be a cake walk either ! Prepare for the Giants, the playoffs beginning this Sunday, with a renewed and inspired effort. We love you 49ers . . . we love football, the 49er way ! Go beat up on those Rams , yea ‘9ers !!!

I have all the respects for Colin Kaepernick. He is a good QB, he can compete in this league with regularity and style when he have been given enough experience. He is great to watch now. But my heart is broken for Alex Smith. He is also a great QB in different ways from CK7. I hope and pray that we will be fine this game and in all other games we play for the rest of the season and in the playoffs no matter who is playing the QB position.

why r we all still talking about the qb’s? kap is starting and that’s it…they have way to many problems with the special teams right now and no one is talking about how bad they r..only good last few weeks has been the punter..akers looks aweful sorry but missed fields goals, blocked field goals i mean he hits that 41 yarder against rams it’s 9-2..return guys fumbling, trying to run out on kickoffs 6 to 8 yards deep getting to the 15 yard line not good…remember giant game..start second half the kickoff doesn’t make end zone and he runs it back to the niners 30 i believe and they score this is unexceptable…fake punts c’mon…look fisher is a gambling man he will fake punts and mark my words on side kick early this week also go for it on 4th downs…the niner special teams better wake up! offense is fine the defense is awesome need to look at special team play more!

And first We all support the QB behind the center, Kap, has nothing to do with this. Does he want the starting job, of course but thats the nature of the Beast, Alex know this he’s been here before. But this was bellow the belt, all the Kid ‘Alex’ did was to do Everything, and more that was asked of him! Payback ashes in his mouth, and still coach hasn’t put an end to this! Doesn’t coach have any understanding of Alex’s feelings, or I guess he just doesn’t give a s h i t , eh?

who on this blog ever said that CK7 sucked 11years with no brain??? you get mad when peope expose for the liar you are so deal with it. your so blind from your hate of alex your forgewtting the fact that alex came into the league with almost NO chance for success at the start of his career, where as kap is coming into a perfect situation for a young qb to wet his feet.,,,,REMEMBER EVERYONE
LASY YEAR 11YEARS WITH NO BRAIN SAID IF ALEX LED THE 49ERS TO THE PLAYOFFS HE WOULD BE THE FIRST ONE TO SAY HOW WRONG HE WAS ABOUT ALEX BUT HE WASNT GOING TO HAVE TO DO THAT BECAUSE HE KNEW ALEX WOULDNT COME THROUGH,,WELL ALEX PROVED HIM WRONG,,,AGAIN,,,AND HE STILL WONT COME CLEAN AND ADMIT THAT ALEX PLAYED BETTER THAN HE THOUGHT HE WOULD…

One more thing here, is Kaepernick the best QB of the 2? I’m not so sure about that, keeping in mind that without the 2 td’s off the defense we don’t know who would have won the game?Had we not had those picks and lost, who would be the guy?

exactly 9erdog. people tend to forget that quarterbacking is much more than throwing the ball 70 yards downfield. hell troy smith and nate davis could do that. alex tends to know the offense thoroughly. he gets us into the right play 95 percent of the time. colin will eventually grasp the offense as well but this is alex’s time
