Morning Tailgate: Nov. 28

Posted by Alex Espinoza on November 28, 2012 – 11:24 AM

Who’s got better linebackers than the 49ers? All-Pro NaVorro Bowman inked a five-year contract extension on Tuesday that will keep him with the 49ers until the 2018 season. Combined with the contract status of the team’s other linebackers, Aldon Smith (Signed through 2015), Patrick Willis (2016) and Ahmad Brooks (2017), it will be interesting to watch the new group during the final stages of Candlestick Park’s great history and entering the new home of the 49ers in 2014.

Kevin Kurz of CSNBayArea.com described the scene at 49ers headquarters as Bowman talked to the media after signing his extension. “The move ensures that Bowman and fellow linebacker and good friend Patrick Willis will be together through at least the 2016 season,” Kurz wrote. “In fact, Willis was among the first people Bowman gave his good news. He just couldn’t keep the secret any longer.”

Tuesday was also a noteworthy day for bad reasons, as Kendall Hunter and Kyle Williams were placed on the season-ending Injured Reserved list. Read up on all the latest 49ers new after the jump.

Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle noted that Bowman wanted to keep playing alongside Willis for years to come.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee relayed comments from Bowman’s agent Drew Rosenhaus on the contract.

Daniel Brown of the Bay Area News Group passed along a transcript of Rosenhaus’ meeting with the media.

Mike Sando of ESPN.com examined the 49ers and their salary cap situation going forward.

Brown also detailed the player movement after Hunter and Williams were placed on IR.

Kroichick discussed the impact of losing Hunter and how it will affect Frank Gore.

Barrows wrote that the 49ers have talented players ready to fill the voids left by Hunter and Williams.

Barrows also noted that the 49ers currently have just 52 players on their 53-man roster.

Kurz wrote about the possibilities the 49ers have on offense without Hunter and Williams.

Steve Palazzolo of ProFootballFocus.com made a statistical analysis of the 49ers-Saints matchup in Week 12.

Sando pointed out a smart offensive coaching decision which led to a big gain for the 49ers vs. New Orleans.

Sando looked back in NFL history to try and find a similar situation to the one between Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith.

Brown spoke to Gore and Donte Whitner about the team’s support of both quarterbacks in the locker room.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle took a historic look back to Jim Harbaugh’s coaching career and how he’s dealt with quarterbacks.

49ers.com offered complete coverage of Bowman’s extension (video/story/photos/press release), discussed the key injuries and how the 49ers are poised to overcome them, and encouraged the Faithful Fans to vote for the 49ers to reach the 2013 Pro Bowl.

I say give Smith a chance to prove himself in the next 2 games against the Rams and Miami? Then Let coach make a dicision…..New England , as it stands right now is our toughest opponent on the road?

EP: not really sure what “prove himself” means! 6 – 2 before going down. I think its coming down style to points? they both have the same number pretty much , they just go about it deferently?
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

It is Official…Harbaugh is going with Kaepernick!! Here we go folks…going into a new era!! I am almost giddy!!

Thank you Harbaugh! Finally, continued offensive excitement!

Last year I was tellin people that Bowman might be better than Willis. I know it sounds blasphemous, but seriously compare the numbers, on the field they are twins that can do the exact same things, both have tackeling fuel in their diet! I know teams scheme more for Willis and that is most likely the reason his numbers aren’t as high as Bo’s. What’s funny is Bo might actually prevent Willis from making it to the probowl this year, but IMHO I think they should both go or at least be named probowlers seeing as how they’ll be playing in the super and not the pro!!!

I just think the 9ers can be much more explosive with CK and the defense has much more to worry about w/defending him. I was pretty nervous the last couple of weeks, but the kid is just showing too much potential. CK should only get better with the more playing time he gets!! Whoa, Whoa!!!

  7. By Hermie on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

Vega…you are right on in that they should both go. Two of the best inside backers in the league!

ok it’s done kap is starting lets get ready for the rams…..that tie looks ugly but it’s done also…things that need attention r the special teams..with.williams hurt now it’s ginn who to me has lost a step and looks shakey.akers like i said is hurt they need to address this…last year special teams won alot of games.. alot! akers was money and ginn returned td’s not fumbles….akers didn’t miss..so to me this is a big story it’s.being overlooked by qb stuff..remember there r three phase to a team offense, defense and special teams…

  9. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

now that CK7 has been given the starting job for the rest of the season, we,as fans, must put aside the we want alex and the we want kap argument and support coach’s decision 1000%. kap’s ability to acramble and extend the play is something that alex didnt quite have unless it was a called qb run. looking forward to seeing CK7 play @ seattle, I think that right there will be more of a measuring stick for CK7 that the saints game was as the seakawks have a much better defense, although they may be out those two top corners

as for special team, with the signing of chad hall I think the 49ers plan to use him as the primary returner. what do you guys think about that?

  11. By mfkram64 on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

one great thing they did was sign that monster bowman…nice job the d is set for years to come…remember winning brings talent..guys who want to play for u as an organaztion will be knocking on the door….front office to coach to the players willing to stay and be a part of this teamhats off nice nice job for many years to come…

the majority of bloggers on this particular blog site’ “morning tailgate”, are very inciteful and have considerable knowledge of ” our ” team. mfkram,hmrhead1, temper, 9erdog and many others, I myself have disagreed with many, but I am aslo an accute enough fan to know when we fans all agree with each other it means coach is doing his job. I have made many posts that might have seemed ver the top or looked at as just plain wrong, but I think that there is one thing all of us 49er fans can agree with each other on 100% is that this team is headed for a super bowl title this year,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,,,THANK YOU ALEX FOR KEEPING THE SHIP SAILING UNTILL THE QB OF OUR FUTURE,CK7 WAS READY TO TAKE OVER THE TASK OF RETURNING OUR BELOVED TEAM TO RESPECABILITY

we need to work on re-signing donte ” the big hit ” whitner and goldson. I know we drafted that kid from mich. state and we have thomas from stanford, but what do the rest of you think about re-signing whitner and goldson for the long term? are they guys we want around for the next 4 years or do you thin we should try and find younger talent to groom. I like whitner he’s a student of the game and golson plays with reckless abandon

now alex has the best opportunity to get a job this offseason and show the world why he was wronged ..ehhem……CK workede like madd and still continues this is his dream and he is not going to let it go …he will get even better ..scary ……..

now with bowman …wooot awesome sign and yes witner and goldson are sure fire niners and ballers ….bringing the heat …….also dont even think for a minute that bowman and willis can be summed up as a who is better …willis plays coverage while bowman gets to tackle everything ….we are so lucky to have all the great playmakers we have and to compare them is for shame ……lol ….good times for niners and should be an entertaining rest of the season …sure no one saw all this comeing ………look for CK to have a little trouble against fisher and the rams but he is very smart and well coached as well so look out rams …….

  31. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

again really all i heard for 2 years now is the coach knows best and now peeps have a problem and can not se the benefits of CK over alex …..for shame …the coach wanted to play some games with the saints and did it …..if this is news to you that the coaches interviews are all truth and nothing but the truth you are sorely misreading and not seeing the full picture as the coach brought out the best team and won ….and the defense responds to CK with a little help as they know he will put up more points …..they work well together CK does long drives to keep em fresh and they respond by takeing out the other team with a vengence….alex left our defense on the field to rot after his checkdown 3 and outs on 3rd down all the time ….no defense can play a full 3 quarters of the game with no scores to help slow down the other team ……CK made a small mistake and the defense said no problem we got you and then CK paid em back with a looong drive over 9 minutes and then the defense came out and destroyed brees ………i see no downside to CK ………why do you

this scenario is going back to j. montana & s. young, its all good if u ask me, cuz’ were winning, were not like some other team who is dissaray, say like the eagles, the cowgirls or even worst the jets…..our defense is solid , just concern about the cb’s a bit to much penalties,& akers i don’t know whats going on in his head right now, offense is opening up, so to me , what ever J. H. decide i’ll respect that, cuz’he knows best….and we all see were going in the right direction…

OK so i know a few sports writers come on here and flaunt their knowledge and try and manipulate fans to certain opinions ….but lay off of the coach calling him a liar and a man without dignity ……..really …..the niners have been a joke for years and Balke went a got him and said hey we are going to bring back the niners winning tradititon ……..montana got sent to the chiefs and i was not happy and yet young came in and worked and made it to and won our 5th superbowl to make us 5-0 …best record ever and hmmm this is a business and these are men …you work to be your best or get replaced by someone who will or maybe they dont players get replaced all the time ….no one is up in arms because gore is shareing …was shareing downs with hunter ……who might replace gore in 6-7 years heh …..or how bout the 2 great TE’s we have …walker is a workhorse …and vernon is the prototype ……they work well together and you will miss walker when he is gone next year …trust me ……lay off the coach he didnt invent players being replaced and sure is not the last to do it ……stop crying and spreading blame and buck up and watch the niners roll ..because you are a fair weather fan anyways and always will be ……most of us sat and watched the mooch years and the man in the suit and singletary and paid for seats and bought jerseys and food ….be happy things are looking up after the 8 or so years of mediocraty …prob spelled wrong but so is your opinion on alex and why he has been replaced

  36. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

as i said before alex can now be the slighted QB who can now find his team and work his magic ……..he will be gone after the season most likely and will end up on the cards ,chargers with norv lol or even the dolphins or eagles or jets …..the alex will be fine …he is a millionarie trying to be a starting QB in the NFL he has made more than most of the really good players on the team allready by mulling around for 3 years and getting 70 million dollars …well after taxes and agent and mom and dad and who ever else prob like 40 maybe even 30 but what ever he is set so to cry for a QB who made more in 8 years than most of us will see as we work harder and longer you just might not feel as bad ……….

If Smith had been playing a junk game for the last three before the switch, then fine, put in CK. But he hadn’t been. In fact, just the opposite. We are, once again, looking at playoff games and most of that is because we had Smith as our QB. That fact isn’t going to change. I hope CK can keep it up, especially when he’s not facing one of the worst defenses around. If not, there’s going to be a whole lot of very angry 49ers fans wondering why Harbaugh made the decision he did. And they’ll be well within their right to.

Im fine with Kap at QB. I dont believe u lose anything with him as oppossed to Alex at QB. Stronger arm and takes some chances that Alex probably would not. Yyou have to take these chances at times to make big plays. Will it result in some turnovers at times….perhaps, but the gains should outweigh the loses. Kap wont take the sacks that Alex does due to his mobilty and his willingness to throw it away if nothing is there….something Alex doesnt do. At this point Im more concerned with our special teams play…Akers is not right and needs to fix whatever it is that ailes him. I understand he has some sort of injury hes dealing with. We cant miss crucial FG’s come post season play. I think Jenkins should slide into Williams spot…excited to see that. Hopefully it will be L. James chance to play in place of Hunter. Excited to see his playmaking ability. I wouldnt utilze B. Jacobs too much…we need him as an insurance policy if Gore goes down…heaven forbid. Id give the relief carries to Dixon for now. Its been 18 years since the big show Niners Nation!!!! The time is now!!!!!!

“Heart-Bah (the “t” is silent) plays Hardball!”

Ignoring the fact that but for being ‘handed’ 2 six-picks & our points weren’t ‘hot’ enough to win, will the next loss annul the bogus “hot-hand” qualifying standard?

My brother & I have been 49ers fans since 1949 (SF 56-28 Cleveland) at Kezar and gone through the Montana/Young era, both of whom obviously had earned the ‘right’ to start. Although it’s amazing to see the enthusiastic athleticism of a promising young stallion, I wonder how the locker-room leadership atmosphere will be influenced by deferring to Colin over Alex at this time.

Alex is NOW in his Prime (& certainly not at fault for missing last year’s Super Bowl, Deion!) as this season’s statistics indicate. He’s worthy of genuine respect, if for nothing more than his heartfelt loyalty & expressed desire to complete “unfinished business” while being compensated with less than lesser talents!

Even though it allows the Niners added positional depth, I don’t foresee him being content for the long run on the sidelines in a ‘backward baseball hat armed with a clipboard.’ If indeed Kap is now to be the once-and-future starter, my hope is that Alex could be advantageously traded to a team in need of his elite abilities (dare we suggest the Cardinals!, or KC as Montana was) & rewarded as financially as he well-deserves.

As unorthodox as it seems, in the interest of engendering & sharing a winning Team Spirit during the remaining schedule, how would it be to play each QB for half of every game, keeping everybody guessing??

  46. By phatalerror on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

I don’t understand why Harbaugh would do this to Alex Smith when he wasn’t outperformed at any time by Colin Kaepernick. Either Harbaugh has an extraordinary sense of how much emotional stress either Kaepernick or Smith can bear when they’re on the field and their performance du jour is beneath the standard of the hot hand, or he has determined that the opportunity to progress Kaepernick cannot wait for the 2013 training camp.

  47. By phatalerror on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

The second-worst part about the decision to start Kaepernick against the Rams was that 11yearsofidiot feels like his opinions about Smith were validated.

  48. By ninerfanfromtonga on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

I don’t like this move at all. It puts us in a situation that can come back to bite us in the rear-end. Why the hell are we jumping the gun with starting CK? Don’t we already know he is solid to come off the bench to replace AS if he needs to be replaced? Knowing these facts puts us in a more favorable position than starting him. I mean we don’t have to play the guessing game with CK any more. We know he can come into games and take over and do just as good a job as AS, or better. Why name a starting QB? Let the opponents play the guessing game and prepare for both.

When we have this advantageous position, we can play call more aggressively since if anything happens to AS, CK is there to pick up the pieces. By starting CK over AS, we send messages to AS that is not well with us should CK get hurt in the next few games. Harbaugh is the best coach IMHO, but I have to question this decision with honesty. It doesn’t favor us one bit. AS have not lost his job, he earned it in the off-season, and in all other competitions for that job leading up to the opening season game. He got hurt and we ditched him for the CK in the first chance we get? That’s not good policy at all, its not sound judgment in my opinion. I know Harbaugh has the hot hand policy, but that’s garbage.

    Gooooooooooooooooooooo Niners!!!!

wow you dont think the bears would have smacked alex around …and you really think alex would have been able to put up 2 TD’s right away to keep the saints in check …sure CK got picked after driving for 2 TD’s …..he got a bad snap and made a mistake …but what happened …the defense after seeing CK match up with brees and get us 2 TD’s like he was going out to buy some coffee and the defense stepped up their game and said hey CK we got your back dude and did they ……alex would have been blwon out at the saints game and we all know that …..stop trying to be a spoilsport and see the future …it has been so long since we had a good QB you refuse to see it …i can not believe you are trying to make excuses for wins by the QB our coach traded up to get

11years. You are a joke. I am supportive of Kap. Unlike you will be if he doesn’t throw up huge numbers. I hope the kid does well. I don’t have anything against him. What I’m talking about is that we already had a winning formula in Alex Smith. Why jeopardize that in the middle of the season?

Alex came in last year without a contract and set up camp Alex,
because he bought into coaches song and dance, and what did he do but go 13 – 3 ! This year once again he showed his loyalty to the NIners saying he knew about the attempt to sign Payton! Alex knew when he signed this last contract it was more then likely his last year as a Niner? But this team ‘2012’ was his shot, so close last year but not quite there!
But this years team was what Alex has been working for these last 7 years, all the BS he’s put up with, just buying his time!
Never pointing a finger, never crying, just doing his job!
What ever they wanted of him, he did, believing that they had his back on return? All those years nasty injury, the coach throwing him under the buss. And it looks like he’s getting thrown under the buss again!

So when the defense steps up to bail out Kap, it’s BECAUSE of Kaps excellent play. But when the defense steps up with A Smith under center, it’s because of Smith’s poor play? It’s like debating a child who has no notion of logic.

And for those who say Loyalty doesn’t matter, couldn’t possibly be a Niner Faithful, because being a Faithful is being Loyal!
Am i a Faithful? yep! I support the Niners and who’s chosen to play! If coach just came out and said Kapernick is our starting QB, this whole mess would be over, but he’s still playing Alex!
Alex for all his Loyalty to the team Alex should be treated better, the 9ers are becoming a Circus!

If this is how coach rewards a player that playing great, how does he handle a player thats out of line, Bench him? LOL

  82. By temper11 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

Agreed 9erdog. It doesn’t sit well. As a niner I wish Kap the best of luck and hope he succeeds. But I wanted a championship for Alex. He deserved this year. He earned it the first 6 years… then he earned it again last year and then he earned it again in the off-season. He’s done nothing to lose it. It was the wrong decision and will always be the wrong decision no matter if win the superbowl this year with Kap under center or not. I appreciate what Harbaugh has done, but he got this one wrong.

your wrong again 11years with no brain, the score was N.O. 14 S.F. 7 when kap threw that pick, proving yet once again you have no frigging idea of what you are saying or talking about, you probably didnt even watch the game since you are a cowboys fan in reality

  84. By temper11 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

That’s correct 49erdefense. Thankfully our D grabbed that pick 6 or the score would likely have gone to 21 to 7 and then the whole game dynamic changes.

11years with no brain posts his garbage against alex without doing any research on what he is saying or taking about. 6 or 7 times this year he has posted what he calls knowledge and is wrong 80% of the time. the dude OBVIOUSLY doesnt watch 49er games at all. he didnt even know the score when kap threw that pick
you been doing that all year no brain. you constantly make your self look like an idiot, keep up the good work,

  86. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

the dude does it ALL THE TIME. ok, once or twice I can see as just trying to be in a hurry to prove he is right, but as many times as he has done it this year just leads one to believe that he doesnt even watch the games, only getting his info off espn or nfl network

after watching every game on the dvr at 3 times, I have seen alex make some great bootleg runs and throws on the run. alex has made some great downfield throws to vernon and crabs and we have seen alex make some bad plays under pressure. so far these last 2 and 1/2 games from CK7 I have seen the same
I also saw kap fumble the ball on a big at at the sideline where he was only saved from a 2nd turnover by the refs. I love the kids running ability but at the same time I hate the fact that the chance of fumbling the ball goes up 100% when the qb runs with the ball. A BIG RISK TO TAKE,,,so, it seems clear to me that coach has seen something in the play of kap during practice and a few plays he has made in the games he has played to give kap the job. whatever coach decides for our team is what we get. I just dont think a change was warranted unless alex had been playing terribly which he had not been. big,big risk coach is taking, if it gets us to a super bowl victory, he will be seen as a genius, but if CK7 chokes in the playoffs sending us home after a scramble fumble or game ending int, he will be seen as making one of the biggest blunders in the modern day nfl

the above post of mine was taken from an article I read off bleacher report dot com it was a link. not my words in any way shape or form. Im actually surprised it posted.

Coach is definitely sending the wrong message to the players!
He creating this whole sideshow while trying to keep the team focused? The press is over the players “who do you support?”
Could we end up with a divided team?
And yes I will support Kap, why wouldn’t I? All I want is for our Niners to win, which by the way is what they were doing!
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

  90. By temper11 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

Agreed… but either way… whether we are celebrating a superbowl victory or an early playoff exit, I personally will view this decision as a mistake. You’re gambling with team chemistry, you’re gambling with an unproven talent, you’re gambling with a proven formula for success, you’re gambling with players who will now think thrice before reporting a possible concussion. And on top of all that, it’s just plain wrong.

  91. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

the play right before brooks takes it to the house, brees just missed hitting colston big down the sideline, which would have made the game 21-7 colston was just BARLEY out of bounds. so for ANYONE to say CK7 played superbly in this game is plain ludicris., the defense bailed him out big, just as they have done alex many times before. I think that is a big reason coach doesnt mind taking a big chance makeing a change ast qb at this point in the season, he can rely on the ” D ” to come up big. the debate will never end. this whole is it the right cal or not will follow this tean for the rest of this season and im sure it will make its way into the 2013 season as well,,,,I hope your right coach harbaugh, there are at least 35,000
other fans who have been going to EVERY home game for the last 15 years that feel that way as well, for to be as close as we are to a super bowl victory right now, a coaching blunder that costs a chance to get that victory wont sit well

The positive I do see here about the QB situation, is there’s no bashing of anybody involved. Just the Faithful expressing their feelings, and there not always the same but everybody is respecting others options!
9erD, what going on in the locker room .. got anything?

  95. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 29, 2012 | Reply

very good of you 9erdog to remember I have a friend who works in the locker room for the 49ers,,a laundry boy, but he is there on game day. I can tell this from what my buddy has said, the team has gotten behind coach on this decision, but there are guys who feel alex should not have lost his job unless he was just outright stinking up the joint, but there are others who feel that the kapper can extend plays and make something out of nothing. the one thing my buddy has said is that the entire team knows full well the risk of the option read qb play, that ball can come out on just a bad exchange between the qb and rb, as evidenced by a play during the saints game where gore thought kap was going to give him the ball but didnt and you can see gore looking on the ground for the ball. my looked at me and shrugged his shoulders and said, not a good time to start a guy who doesnt have a whole lot of game speed experiance at ball security
