49ers Named Week 12 Top Protectors
Posted by on November 28, 2012 – 11:10 AM
For the second time in an eight-week span, the San Francisco 49ers offensive line has been selected as the Week 12 Madden Most Valuable Protectors by Hall of Fame coach John Madden.
San Francisco’s line allowed no sacks in a 31-21 win over the New Orleans Saints. It was the first no-sack effort turned in by the line since a Week 5 win over Buffalo. Coincidentally, it was the last time the 49ers won Madden’s award.
It’s been a big week for the offensive line already. According to ESPN.com’s Mike Sando, all five members of the offensive line (Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Jonathan Goodwin, Alex Boone and Anthony Davis) rank in the top-5 of Pro Bowl fan voting for their respective positions with three weeks left to vote.
San Francisco’s offensive line joins the New York Giants as the only team to win Madden’s award twice this season.
At the end of the year, the 2012 Madden Most Valuable Protectors award will be announced during the week of Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans. With two wins in 12 weeks, the 49ers offensive line should be in the thick of the conversation when it comes to selecting a winning offensive line.

We’d better protect like we did against New Orleans. If an OT goes down we’re hosed, I don’t care if you have George Plimpton at quarterback.
