Morning Tailgate: Nov. 27

Posted by Taylor Price on November 27, 2012 – 10:17 AM

Patrick Willis has been long regarded as one of the NFL’s elite defensive players. Each season of his six-year career, the San Francisco 49ers linebacker has been in the discussion for the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honors.

This year is no different, only Willis is not alone in receiving DPOY publicity. Second-year linebacker Aldon Smith, the NFL’s leader with 16.5 sacks, is also receiving praise for his elite play.

ProFootballFocus.com’s cast of writers recently listed Smith and Willis as their No. 8 and No. 9 candidates for DPOY honors.

There’s still five games to play and Smith (16.5 sacks) is chasing the NFL’s single-season sack record (22.5) held by former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan.

Jim Harbaugh believes it’s great to be mentioned with some of the game’s all-time greats, but the 49ers coach believes there’s more important accomplishments left on the table.

“I think I’ve told you what I think of team effort and records and it doesn’t need to be compared with anything that happened previous years or with previous great players,” Harbaugh said on Monday. “I mean you’re talking about great players that accomplished great things. It’s great to be mentioned with that, but I think I could speak for Aldon if I could for minute. Statistics aren’t what motivates him, it’s winning games.”

In the month of November, Smith totaled 9.0 sacks in three games, while the league’s No. 2 and 3 sack leaders, J.J. Watt and Von Miller, totaled five and eight sacks, respectively, in four November contests.

ESPN.com’s football writers ranked the 49ers as the NFL’s No. 3 team in recent power rankings.

ESPN.com’s Mike Sando writes that Colin Kaepernick is the fastest rising player in the NFC West.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee shares a report that Kendall Hunter could be out for the season.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle notes that injuries to Hunter and Kyle Williams could open up opportunities for 49ers rookies.

Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that Kaepernick has earned the team’s starting quarterback role, fair or not.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com checked in with former 49ers coach and current NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci for his thoughts on Harbaugh’s looming quarterback decision.

49ers.com detailed the rationale behind Harbaugh’s decision to wait till mid-week to announce a starter for Sunday in St. Louis.

I think they should bench Colin Kapernick even though he had a couple of good games.Hell ALEX SMITH has been playing GREAT FOR 2 years. And he wasn’t the one who fumbled last year against the Giants in the playoffs.

  8. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

as I suspected, the report of coach harbaugh splitting the reps with the 1st team between alex and CK7 was false.

JASON BABIN released. Hmmmmm. Babin on the D-End. Aldon on the other end. Justin Smith and Big Sop in the middle?

i have a couple of things for debate..first it sucks to loss hunter and williams..hunter was a great change he was avg. 5+ yards a touch and williams was a good 4th rec..plus backup punt/kick returner who replaces them? jacobs he is due it’s time…jenkins? don’t trust him …james don’t trust him also..so my second thing for debate how bout getting asmungha? philly is said they might cut him..if they do i think the niners should pull the trigger..culliver and brown r spotty at best and rogers has his moments..so put asmunga( ya i know i didn’t spell it right but u know)back with rogers and this d is complete they have the best front 7 but the cb’s r shakey..what do we think?

  11. By dave g. on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

Asmunga? He has not done sh!t in Philly and getting paid a lot for it?

hey what about that call by the refs that said crabs was down when he was not even close and he would have scored ……and the fumble that they said was blown dead the one that aldon picked up and sat in the endzone with it …and they said he down because of forward progress and yet the entire game our guys were getting manhandled with 3..4…and 5 guys ripping and pulling at our guys as they are being moved back and forth horrible …..so who is strting at QB lol

Alex Smith did a good job managing games. Colin Kaepernick did a great job winning games. Alex plays well when he’s not asked to do anything, and never gets behind. Colin plays well under pressure, and bounces back from mistakes. They run the same offense, yet Colin scores more, and gets more yards per down because he is a better player.

    Well said, Ben Blowers!

Asmunga does not tackle…so he is lmited in run support and once he is beat he doesn’t tackle either. Don’t want him!!

Ben Bowers, Kap has played in 3 games, he tied one of them and would have lost the 3rd if not for 2 pick 6′s. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s played well, and I’m not bashing Kap, but the statement, “Alex did a good job managing games, Kap did a great job winning games” just shows that you are drinking the media kool-aid too much. I’ve never seen such an ungrateful fan base as ours. 19 and 5 just isn’t good enough. It’s almost as if you’d rather lose than win with A. Smith.

  23. By temper11 on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

Smith takes what the defense gives him. You all say that defenses know he can’t throw long and so it takes the deep threat away and clogs up the middle. If that were true, how would you be able to rip him all the time for doing nothing but checking down? How would we have one of the best running games in the league?

If Defenses don’t respect him, there shouldn’t be anybodey to check down to. Our running game should be abysmal!

I’ve looked at that hit >Vilma Abdul-Quddus , Isa< hit (spearing) that cause Walkers hip injury, Saints play dirty !

  28. By temper11 on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

Game manager? Sure – when we are up (which is often) he plays safe and we win.

  29. By temper11 on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

When we are down he cuts it loose and we win.

Some how both the names got put together? But the hit that injured Walker ‘Spearing’ was done by >Isa Abdul-QuddusVilma< that took out Hunter dirty players all! IMHO !
No room for that stuff ………. by any player, on amy team!

  32. By 9erdog on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

This blog works in strange ways, for sure!
Anyhow Vilma took out Hunter, cheap shot all the way. I think the whole team plays that way, DIRTY! IMHO

to me coach has to make his decision and that’s it…love him but this is not the time to be uncertein about the qb…they have 3 big road games left first in st. louis where the niners struggle so they need to be ready..it’s become a circus…pick one guy and move on. to much talk..i like kap. but if alex plays so be it…the team needs to know who they r playing with mostly the wr’s..it’s all timing..is it a game he’s playing on the other teams so they can’t prepare for one qb? belchick went with brady when bledsoe got hurt and when he was ready to come back he stayed with brady that’s it…bledsoe played a playoff game that year when brady got hurt and won the game..next game brady was back and won super bowl…to me coach needs to pick one and stay with him period..

  37. By 9erdog on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

I don’t believe anybody here’s wrong, IMHO Alex has earned the right to finish the season, Mooch should have never been fired! But Coaches and QB’s come and go. This year alone we’ve had what? 6 head coaches? god only knows how many QB’s we’ve had? And as far as OC who knows. So let’s get this stuff settled for the betterment of the team! Head coach is settled! Now the QB needs to be anointed, so we can get on with the job at hand, I hope for Alex!! But of course I will support the choice !

temper11. As far as the 2 pick 6 game; Kaep was playing to protect the 10 point advantage. No one will ever know if Kaep would have won or lost.
