49ers Place Hunter, Williams on IR

Posted by Alex Espinoza on November 27, 2012 – 2:28 PM

The San Francisco 49ers announced they have placed WR Kyle Williams and RB Kendall Hunter on the Injured Reserve List. The team also announced that RB Jewel Hampton has been added to the active roster from the Non-Football Injury List. The team also added WR Chad Hall to the practice squad, and waived S Eddie Whitley from that unit.

Hampton played 26 games (seven starts) for Iowa and Southern Illinois, finishing his collegiate career with 348 carries for 1,698 yards and 25 touchdowns, while adding 22 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown. As a junior at Southern Illinois in 2011, Hampton was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Year.

Hampton was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the 49ers on May 4, 2012.  The team placed him on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List on August 27, 2012.

Hall (5-8, 187) was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles on March 11, 2010. He was later released by the Eagles on September 4, 2010 and signed to Philadelphia’s practice squad a day later. The Eagles promoted Hall to the active roster on October 10, 2010, and he went on to play in 8 games (one start).

After being released by Philadelphia on September 3, 2011, Hall was added to the team’s practice squad the next day. He joined the Eagles active roster again on November 16, 2011, and played in the final seven games of the season. In two seasons with the Eagles, he caught 14 passes for 135 yards (9.6 average) and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 42 yards on 12 carries. Hall was released by the Eagles on August 31, 2012.

The 26-year old native of Atlanta, GA, attended The Air Force Academy and led the team in both rushing and receiving, as a senior. He spent two years on active duty as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Whitley had been on the practice squad since November 20, 2012.

What’s the story with Brandon Jacobs? Is there any particular reason he isn’t getting a bit more opportunity as another weapon for the Niners??

  2. By jamie on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

Its time to activate Jenkins and James…..Jacobs is an insurance policy if Gore gets hurt…thats about it. Its time to see what the rookie weapons can do!!!!

In response to Sid, He did get his 1st carry FINALLY last week. I figure he will be given more PT once the offense hits the field in the next week or two. He is coming off a knee injury i believe. But yes I agree he should get more snaps. He is HUGE!

    in response to jamie,

    I AGREE!!!!

Let’s not forget about Dixon. He can be a beast. But yes, let’s see some rookie action. How about James returning some punts/kicks. Could be exciting!!

I agree, I’d love to see James and Jenkins come in and get some playing time. I hope there is no rust on them not playing almost a whole season, but from what I know of James, he’s a worker no matter where he is placed and will give 110% when his number is called. I’m sure he’ll have to adjust to the NFL as the other rookies have, but he’ll make his statement as soon as he is given the chance :) I think Jacobs is chomping at the bit to get re-activated as well, and I do think he should be the replacement to Gore if he needs the help. Let’s Go Niners!

Let the Quarterback situation play out, Harbaugh going to do his own thing no matter what. I’m more worried about our kicking game.

  8. By ranman49er on Nov 27, 2012 | Reply

I’m not too worried about James and Jenkins being ready to play. As Harbaugh coaches….It’s better to be ready and have to wait for your opportunity, then have your opportunity arise and not be ready.

kap was amazing??? really? against the worst defense in the league he out up 245 1 td and a rush td,,, thats amazing? smith plays the saints when they are at their best and puts up 299 3 tds a rush td and no ints, kap gave them the ball back and let them take the lead,, thank God for brooks and whitner otherwise we lose that game,, come on now if alex got those same exact stats in place of kap we would here 11 non stop about how average he is,, dnt glorify kap for being an exact alex smith stand in,, except kap got max protection most of the game ofcourse he didnt get sacked ,, get real i love the kid he is our future but a lot of fans arent totally seein whats goin on in the game because they won, they protected him all game wit play calling never strayin away from the run which happened a lot this year for smith,, com on 11 where are you at? say it the defense and special teams won that game at least be consistant with your criticizms

(Not related to IR) THE BLUNT LETTERS TO THE QB SITUATION:
ALEX: We still love you, keep your chin up, but you have to understand that Kap is a better choice at this point. You are a multi-millionaire, be happy enjoy your money and your life in the comfort of the safe sidelines for now. You are young so keep developing your skills and challenge yourself to be better than Kap in the future, which is what his game is all about. Learn to be more aggressive and throw more like Kap, Brees, Tom, Rogers, etc… don’t be too conservative, it is good for stats but not good for winning the big games! For now be a sport and be a good backup just in case Kap gets injured. If that happens then try to showcase your skills and abilities again! In the meantime ride the Kap Bus with all of us.

HARBAUGH: If you are as smart and completive as people say you are then you will most definitely choose Kaepernick over Smith because you want to WIN IT ALL and he gives you best chance of winning it all. If Kap proves he can’t do it then you have Alex waiting on the sidelines, no worries. You will also reward your whole team which is very talented (Aldon, Vernon, Patrick, etc..), and they all deserve “the ring”. I know it is a tough decision but you have to make Alex understand that he isn’t the best choice for the 9ers at this time, remind him that he will also get a ring when you win the SB! Kap gives you a way better chance of winning it all and isn’t that what this is all about? You have a great team that can probably win the SB back to back in the next 3 years with Kap (not with Alex). You will go into the record books of the greatest coaches, and if you choose otherwise history will prove that you might not be as smart of a coach as they make you to be, you will be perceived to go more by sympathy than a desire to win. Kap has the HOT HAND at this time, develop him for this year’s post season and you will win it all!

Terrible loss for us. Kendall brought quickness to our run game almost like a Darren Sproles. Williams was very useful. Now let’s pound it with Jacobs and Dixon and try saveing some Gore for the Playoffs. The Qb situation well we all know what we have in Smith, and were only beginning to see how good Kaepernick can be. I’d say use Smith against the Rams and the Dolphins but definitely put in Kapp against the Pats and Seahawks. We definitely have a good situation going for us.

he’s(jacobs) old&slow man harbaugh shouldput that little dude(james) and see what he can do for a game or 2 if need be

  14. By Chad on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

@ Sid.. two reasons. Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter. But now that Hunter is injured I would expect to see Jacobs out there from time to time, and even a little LaMichael James.

@ranman, please no more rookies running punts….

jenkins may be out there as well as laMichael however i believe jewels is faster than lamichael so this should be interesting

@truefaith49–yes Kap did good against one of the worst defences (saints)but he did even better against one of the best defences(bears)

also even if we didnt get the 2 picks to the house 19-21 but remember david akers missed a 50 yarder sooooo

Thanks to Hunter and Williams. You guys had great years. Good luck in your recoveries. You will want to be off of crutches for your trip to the white house next year. Also, make sure that you get your ring sizes into the league office.

The Starting QB job belongs to Alex. I think that he would have played just as good or better than Kaep. Kaep is great, but Alex is still the better QB and needs to be back in the Starting line-up. I am sure that this will be Kaep’s team soon enough though.

  21. By all9ers on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

@BD-Totally disagree with you about Alex, he would have lost against the Saints! If coach makes the wrong decision and keeps Alex, sure he might win again Rams, Hawks, Cards, etc.. but he will lose in the playoffs and for sure not win the superbowl. They stil could possibly win with Alex because of the Defense but not because of Alex helping much. Put it simply with Alex playing how he plays now they might have a 2% chance of winning, with Kap they have a 90% chance. That is the point and my opinion.

  22. By BD on Nov 28, 2012 | Reply

all9ers, I respect your opinion. Alex is a much different QB than Kaep. While I am still a huge Alex supporter, I am glad that I don’t have to make the decission on who to start. Whomever Harbaugh decides to start must be the best choice. I am fairly certain that he knows more about the team than any of us do. Kaep or Smith, GO NINERS!

@49erguy true the bears is one of the better defenses when they are playing chumps like the falcons are,, every good team they played they got smashed, true akers didnt make all his field goals but 50 yrds is still a long try, without those ints the score would not have been 19-21,, brees was warming up after the kap pick saints would have scored at least 3 or 7 on one of those two drives that were ended by an int,, smith has done nothing but prove himself last yr and this yr right is right and wrong is wrong,, ppl call him conservative i say he takes what the defense gives him just cuz you have explosive te or wr dosent mean they are open everyplay,, come on now sure they been lockin up davis but wit alex being the qb he is it didnt matter he took what the defense gave him and threw how many tds to crabtree again?? after he started hot wit how many to davis??? get real he was donin wayy better than last yr,, west coast offense isnt about the deep ball,, i know ebery1 wants us to bee like the sorry saints and packers and patriots with their air attack but their game is inferior to ours which has been prooven the pats will get it too just wait
