Morning Tailgate: Nov. 23

Posted by Taylor Price on November 23, 2012 – 10:47 AM

Contrary to reports, no decision has been made on who will start at quarterback for the 49ers this Sunday in New Orleans. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman reiterated the team’s stance on Thanksgiving Day that the team is confident in both of the team’s top quarterbacks and that Alex Smith has to be cleared for contact.

Colin Kaepernick has taken the same amount of practice reps this week leading defensive players to believe he will make his first road start this weekend in New Orleans. That’s according to safety Donte Whitner who told The Dan Patrick Show via ProFootballTalk.com this morning that he and his teammates are under the impression Kaepernick will get the nod.

Jim Harbaugh will address the media at 1:45 p.m. and tight end Vernon Davis expects his coach to name a starter according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Maiocco also notes that Smith’s final contact test could take place any time before kick-off. Team Medical Director Dr. Dan Garza could administer the test when the team lands in New Orleans to see how Smith responds to the altitude change.

Harbaugh’s press conference will be covered promptly on http://www.49ers.com/live.

NFL.com’s Eliot Harrison predicts a 49ers 25-23 win in New Orleans.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle examines Roman’s comments on the quarterback decision.

Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle previews the tight end matchup between Vernon Davis and Jimmy Graham.

Daniel Brown of the San Jose Mercury News profiles the growing legend of Colin Kaepernick in his hometown of Turlock, California.

49ers.com shared the comments of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio who is set to face the team he began his coaching career with in 1986.

TIM KAWAKAMI got this from ,, Trotter?
“According to Jim Trotter’s report, Smith has been informed that Kaepernick will start in New Orleans and that the decision does not involve Smith’s health status.”
No truth to this ,, can’t even tell you how bad I would have felt if this quote were true, true Kap os the more talented QB of the two. But just the same Alex is playing great football. And more importantly being a Niners is all about loyalty. Alex has always been just that to this team, and should be treated the same

  2. By 9erdog on Nov 23, 2012 | Reply

Yes I know the time will come when there will be a change, and I thought I could see that in the contract Alex got. Same type of contract Payton got but with Alex less cash … $13 mil? If HQ doesn’t come up with that Alex can walk! I understand in the NFL it comes down to ‘What have you done for lately?’ Well?
The numbers Kap, put up! were pretty much the same as Alex numbers, but he did it deferently … the bottom line as always is just win baby.
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

kaep deserves the starting poaition, simply because he brings the 49er offence to where it should be just like montana and young was running the west cost. we dont need a game manager we need a qb whos willing to go down field we need an elite!

  4. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 23, 2012 | Reply

well it is this if colin starts and gets blasted alex can say i told you so ….or if the kaeper comes out and destroys the saints then what …the bandwagon is on and we all light burning 11 jerseys ………this is just football and we watch and cheer and specualate wich is why we watch …it is fun to have this to talk about and even better our team has the league on notice……………WE ARE HERE

  5. By 9erdog on Nov 23, 2012 | Reply

YES! I’m an Alex supporter ,, I supported Alex when we we’re losing because we didn’t have any coaching or talent to speak of! And I always felt that with coaching and talent Alex would win. And I know a lot of others posters here feel/felt the same way. So now that we have been proven right, and Alex with 1 1/2 years with good Coaching ‘understatement’ and a lot of good talent as well! Alex is 20-5-1. And the reason we didn’t make the SB last year, sure the hell wasn’t Alex’s fault! Sooo
IMHO very HO, This is Alex’s season to finish, he’s earned it!

  6. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 23, 2012 | Reply

woah ok your opinion is noted yet alex could not move the ball after the first quarter and williams was the back up and sure made some mistakes late in an game we should have had locked up allready …the defense picked off eli and alex coulnt even get a field goal the defense got several turnovers early and we got a filed goal and a TD ….and the other 3 turnover went fo not …….and even when the game went into over tiem alex threw 3 checkdowns and walked off the field smiling all the way …yeah i saw it and yeah was not cool he gave up way early in that game and if you go back and watch it you wil see that so no i think alex is a millionaire trying to play football so he can impress his wife and friends …and alex did not run the gambit everygame while everyone sat on the bench in awe ….he played the 10 yard game and the running game got a lot of yards and the special teams was awesome and we had an easy schedule last year this year alex lost the games becuase of his average QB play to a prepared defense …..and several of those wins you put on alex were won by the defense stopping winning drives by the other team because a;lex could not even get a first down to ice the games ….go bakc and watch the regualr season giants game and cards game and seachickens game for a few all won by the defense because alex could not ice the game

  7. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 23, 2012 | Reply

all this is fun but after the saints game we will all know who the starter will be ….this season with a tougher schedule is awesome …..bout time we see what the niners can actually do against some good teams ……lost most of em but eh should male the playoffs and ho hum great ….but we all want that 6-0 up there for the record books and alex really ….no ..unless????…no not with alex and lol really where is he going to go if kaeper gets the nod and does good …no where but bermuda to get some sun the league showed alex how good he was in the offseason by snubbin g him at the probowl and then being non existant in freeagency ….the league knows just as the niners know alex is just a average QB under a elite system and if CK is for real then watch out and see just how powerful the niners can be ….and yes i will accept all you alex is the man guys into the new era …..we are for the niners and that coveted 6-0 in the superbowl best ever stat …everything else is water under the bridge

  8. By 9erdog on Nov 23, 2012 | Reply

Before we had the Coach and the talent we have now! It was Alex just can’t win, No. No it was Alex has small hands and can’t grasp the ball, all that BS! when it really came down to was coaching and talent, something that all QB’s need to win.
Now that we’re winning, its still not enough now it seems to come to style points? “kaep deserves the starting position,” ?
Well then what does Alex deserve, he sure the hell deserves something, eh?

  9. By ElPresidente on Nov 23, 2012 | Reply

it doesnt matter what we think or feel – or even how Smith or CK feels about the decision. the job of an NFL coach is to put the best team out on the field. Smith was never promised job security, just the chance to COMPETE for his job.
what if CK takes off like Kurt Warner did after Trent Green was hurt? do we put Smith back in out of some misguided loyalty?

No, the loyalty is to the team, the organization and the fans…not to 1 player.

bottom line, if CK gives us the better opportunity to win, he should start.

its about wins and Superbowls, not hurt feelings – this is the NFL.

and like Bob Sugar says…its not Show”friends”, its Show”Business” !

@ sophisticatedfan – think about some of the comments the players made, after the game and this week – if you read between the lines (and thats all we can do right now) the players seemed hyped about CK7…

doesnt it tell you something that the locker room in SF that there hasnt been ANY comments in favor of keeping Smith the starter? no one has come out and said “Alex is our guy”…the silence is deafening.

I think kap should gain the starting qb position. He is too talented to only get a couple snaps a game. Hes quickly adaptable and posses more potential than Alex Smith. Give the kid another start and make the decision. I would rather lose Alex to another team, than colin.

@ELPreisidente,,I am in 100% agreement with your 1st post, I have been a staunch alex supporter knowing full well that coach drafted CK7 to develop. as we all know alex has been a good above avg qb working within the system and limiting the mistakes. I believe that if CK7 keeps pouring it on we should stick with him. thats not saying I think alex just totally sucks, but it sure looks like kap is ahead of his growth than even coach maybe expected, just an opinion, but as long as we keep winning Im kool with whoever coach has spinning the rock,,,

now I have never said I think alex will ever be brees or brady like, we have a strong running game and a smashing defense, alex’s game has been take what the defense gives you, limit the mistakes and ball control. I have seen alex check out of man to man coverage to a running play and gore got 45+ yrds on the play. that right there shows how commited alex has been to coach’s style of dont be greedy but kap’s style is different. and it worked to near perfection monday night.
we faitfhful got pretty excited monday night at ” the stick”, but we are also smart enough to know that one game doesnt win you the super bowl. the rest of the regular season is going to be very interesting

kap is starting…so now coach can finally use moss and manningham thats why we got these guys to open up the offense…not look the same as last year…to me it’s a perfect fit…kap needs to play and move forward…alex will be there as the backup and like i said before he will be great trade bait this off season…it’s time just like rogers taking over for farve…u people who love alex sorry but it’s time if he’s as good as u all say then this off season some team should want him..it’s time…..

  24. By ace on Nov 23, 2012 | Reply

one way to look at this is that alex hasnt been cleared for contact yet, whatever that means, and the saints are a blitz happy team, so i wanna rest my starter and have him healthy for the playoffs, and i wanna see what kaep can do what he shouldnt do, like throwing into triple coverager for moss to try to knock it down-bad idea, but monday when he missed he missed away from danger like over throwing deep only can be caught by reciever or incomplete, he looked more comfortable monday great job kaep, lets see what the kid can do against the saints, they need to win to maybee squeek into the playoffs so they are gonna bring it, goooooooo niners !!!!!

What many, beyond just 11, have been saying is that our offense has been below average with AS at the helm. Some said it was the O Coordinator play calling being too conservative. Some said it was the WRs or OLine. I happen to agree with 11 that it was Alex refusing to throw vertical and taking too many sacks. In my opinion, Monday night showed that the issue was Alex. Maybe its too early to anoint Colin a star, but at least he made plays that we havent seen in a long time. I believe we are a better team with Colin under center.

Brady, Paton, both elite QB’s nobodies gonna argue with that, I don’t think? But Brady lost the last 2 SB’s he started, Payton lost the last SB he started. Eli who some would say is not a elite QB “I would disagree’ has beaten Brady in his last 2 SB’s he’s started! All I’m saying is be careful what you wish for!

    @elPresidente,
did you listen to any of the players yourself? Vernon Davis came out and said “Alex is still the man”. VD, who arguably benefitted the most from CK’s playing in the game, said it was Alex. Just look at the year 11 is having; you don’t bench that.

  33. By Hmrhead1 on Nov 24, 2012 | Reply

They are not benching AS. They are simply starting the better player.

jeromy no sorry ur stil and always will be wrong about alex smith like many others who look for anything to try and nick pick what he has acomplished as a starter with the 49ers he has established himself and absoloutly nothin you say can change that in any way shape or form other than in ur head

Jeremy. Your prediction was Scott Tolzein, Matt Flynn and anyone other than Alex and eventually someone will replace Alex like every other QB. You like a Horoscope not Nostradmeus!

I always knew Kaepernick was the future but he seems to be progressing faster than anticipated. NINERS look great overall. We have solid depth everywhere BUT We do need to work on the kicking game. Whats going on with Akers?

  66. By ace on Nov 25, 2012 | Reply

im exicted about ck 7 too, he does seem to be more acurate, stonger armed and way more mobile, and he has a great stiff arm for a qb,and his field vision seems pretty good so far, but he still so young and has been in 2 full games now, its pretty risky to bench exp over youth at qb in the nfl, cuz it takes years to learn the game to compete at a high lvl, or does kaep make it look that easy cuz it is for him ? nothing like a good qb conterversy, i bet more teams wish they had that prob goooooo niners !!!!

  67. By ace on Nov 25, 2012 | Reply

and when teams figure out how to stop a college qb from nevada, running a college play the option we might be in trouble, im suprised, honestly, that teams arent aware of how to defend that, better cuz well have any superbowl winning teams ever run a staight college qb option play, like we do now, it might just be crazy enuff to work, but i do believe we would be the first, niners time !!!

  68. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 25, 2012 | Reply

the defense bailed ck7 out of this one. aside from that td run, it didnt look much different than with alex out there. all the alex haters have been saying the defense has bailed alex out, well, they bailed kap out today. take away those 2 td by the defense and this game turns out much different. kap made 3-4 bone-headed throws. I like what I see from kap but not enough to warrant a change mid-season. just an observation, but the brandon jacobs sighting today was great to see.

yeah akers is aching this year whats up with that ? david go kick some practice field goals plz we might need you in a big game kick, plz be ready when time comes and nail it, pound it, drill it deeeeeeeeep !!!!

You guys need to stop with the PRO ALEX and ANTI ALEX. The reality is we are 49er fans. EVERYONE NEEDS TO PUT THEIR EGOs aside and stop chasing the “I TOLD YOU SO” line. The bottom line is our coaching staff knows what they are doing. KAP is raw but extremely talented. Alex is dependable. They are both very good. Kap is our future. The coaches will decide whether the future is now or later BUT Pro Alex don’t sell Kap short as much as Anti Alex always want to slam Alex. Kap has done a tremendous job. Give him credit and I got news for you…HE IS PLAYING A PRO OFFENSE. Its all about us winning the Superbowl.

  73. By dave g. on Nov 25, 2012 | Reply

We have two really good QB’s. Be happy because some teams have none. We have great depth no matter who starts and we in great shape to win the SB.

  74. By dave g. on Nov 25, 2012 | Reply

The focus should be how we need to improve our one weakness: Our kicking game! WTF is going on with our special teams?

  75. By mfkram64 on Nov 26, 2012 | Reply

listen to all guys now….o the d won the game…it looked like the same offense they run with alex…r u kidding me….kap was in total control..finally a long time consuming drive when they need one late in game not first drive of game like alex..and got points….on bad throw cuz of bad snap it happens..he hit d. walker down middle when they needed a big play…how can u people not love this offense with kap.? i feel when they need a play he has the ability to finish it! not three and outs over and over..taking sacks over and over..is the oline better or is it cuz it’s kap. back there not alex..look at his arms he shook of that defender and hit the rec. for a first down..alex would have curled up and took sack,,stop your bleeding hearts for alex if kap fails well u got alex…like i said d needed to show up and they did…a great effort off. and def. not so on special teams..

  76. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 26, 2012 | Reply

all the alex haters defending ck7 need to stop. he made 3-4 bone head throws, moss saved his $$ and the defense bailed EVERYONE out

  77. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 26, 2012 | Reply

go back aad watch the tape against the cards, alex made some great throws down field, and only mis-fired once.man I aint no alex hugger, I have said for years he is an avg qb playing at an above avg level within this system, however, coach is looking for maybe just a bit more from his starting qb, but I dont think you should be playing with fire like this during a super bowl run, but, once again, IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST,,even if I dont agree with it at times,,,

  78. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 26, 2012 | Reply

if moss doesnt grab jenkins on that play he’s gone for a pick 6 off kap

  79. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 26, 2012 | Reply

if kap’s final line had 2 int’s on it and we lost, we would be talking VERY differently about our qb situation and who should be our starter, like I said, the defense bailed EVERYONE out yesterday

  80. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 26, 2012 | Reply

we didnt get the running game going untill late in the game, like the 4th qrtr.,my buddy brought a friend,a casual fan, to my house for the game, we tailgate at my house on away games,,to watch the game, and at the start of the 4th qtr. dude looked at all of us and said,”hey, kap is looking like a poised veteran huh?” we all looked at dude and said,,”say what”,,dude he is doing ok,but this aint nothing special” that was my wife and we all started howling. see my point? kap looks much better but made some of the very same mistakes we have seen alex make. thats why I think coach is playing with fire,,yup kap plaed well, and yup,kap played bad, result, defense won us the game, and kap didnt lose it,,sounds like a discussion about alex doesnt it? this will be a very interesting week here in the city

Kaep is the QB of the future. I don’t see why not. . . So now I qualified my statements below:

WE ALL saw more down field throws because WE ALL saw the saints defense dare Kaep to beat them instead of getting beat like every other team gets beat by the 49ers running down their throats.

The Kaep lovers here seam to really just be Alex haters. So of course they will ride his sack although he still posted as “mediocre” stats as Alex has. You all p!$$ and moan about looking down field. Alex Smith has tied 3rd in HIGHEST yards per completion in the NFL for QBs who’ve played more than half the season. Gore is averaging less yards per carry since Kaeps introduction to the offense as starter. The team still accomplishes win’s the same splitting run yards with Kaep and the rest of the run offense with a bit more down field shots at a lower percentage completion. Or running more effectively because Alex is good at calling the right run audible and completes 70% of his throws at a very high yards per completion.

Bottom line. This “dynamic offese” the 49ers have with kaep didn’t score but 17 points on the SAINTS defense.

As I read your last post 49def, which was well said , am more worried about the issue of the 49er, s keeping Roman and Fangio together on the staff during Jims current term as coach ,look at the situation in the NFL concerning cretin coaches you know were am going with this right. Where as Trent been during all this, he’s probably been smiling in his office with Jed and his mom and dad.

  83. By MC33 on Nov 26, 2012 | Reply

LOL @ mfkram64:”Kaep was in total control.”

Last I looked Moss saved a pick 6. He threw without looking at the defense several times more than Alex Smith has this entire season. Delay of game a couple of times because he couldn’t get the reads until too late. He’s confident in his athleticism and rightly so. But he didn’t show mental stamina. . . “He didn’t lose the game” like Alex doesn’t. But wait, our defense scored as many TDs as Kaep did. He’s the quarterback of the F U T U R E, not right now.

You guys kill me. You all chasing the “I told you so”. If you pro Alex you will find the negatives in Kaps game, if you anti Alex you will find the negatives in Alex’s game. Its like Democrats and Republicans. I am neither…I want ONLY whats best for my team. Please stop the madness of who is right and who is wrong and just have faith in our coaches like I have been saying all along. The coaches know the process and evolution they are taking.

  85. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 26, 2012 | Reply

yes dave g. as I have been saying all along ,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST
@MC33, well said, I think kap is much more athletic than alex but his potential is limit-less, many coaches have said that potential will get them fired. CK7 is the future, but we are living in the here and now. as long as we are winning games im kool with whatever coach desides, but he is playing with fire I think. alex is still tops in the league with a 70% completion pct. and 3rd in the league with a 104 qb rating. you gunna try and tell me that sucks? I will say it again, I think coach is playing with fire. if coach was looking for kap to blow it up against the saints, it didnt happen,

ALLRIGHT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, Remember the problems that Alex had when he first started we all remember those days RIGHT. And besides those of you that want to tell use about the game that we ALL WATCHED come on get real, aging I bring up the subject of possible coaching vacancy’s in the NFL, the two that I mentioned will be looked at real hard, now if they stay and we get that 6th ring then there going to get a lot of money thrown there way. Hey 49erdef am going to get t-shirts and have IN HARBOUGH WE TRUST logo stenciled on them…….GO 49ER,S
