Morning Tailgate: Nov. 21

Posted by Alex Espinoza on November 21, 2012 – 10:18 AM

Randy Moss has become a key veteran presence in the the 49ers locker room since he joined San Francisco this offseason. While he may not have the eye-popping statistics that most fans know him for, those within the organization know how valuable he is to the team.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com spoke to Moss earlier this season, who told Maiocco that the best way to get to know him is to take a visit to his hometown. So Maiocco and camera crews visited Rand, W.V., during the the 49ers’ trip to Youngstown, Ohio, to get a better look at what shaped the man in the No. 84 jersey. You can watch videos on CSNBayArea.com and read Maiocco’s background story as well.

The rest of today’s Morning Tailgate rounds up 49ers quarterback headlines, looks at the Kraft Hunger Bowl, which is headed to the new Santa Clara Stadium, and more.

Ray Ratto of CSNBayArea.com writes that fans shouldn’t rush to make judgements after Colin Kaepernick’s stellar start on “Monday Night Football.”

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle relayed comments from Jim Harbaugh’s Wednesday morning spot on KNBR, as the 49ers coach said he expects Alex Smith to be cleared to return to the field at New Orleans on Sunday.

Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group shared comments from former 49ers quarterbacks Steve Young and Trent Dilfer on the subject.

Inman also detailed the 2014 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl and what it means for Santa Clara.

Monte Poole of the Bay Area News Group wrote that Kaepernick should start on Sunday but that job should belong to Smith long-term.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee noted that 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh missed a scheduled conference call with the media and discussed the 49ers quarterback situation.

Maiocco spoke to 49ers owner Dr. John York, who is also the chairman of the NFL Owners Committee on Health and Safety, who said he was pleased with the way the 49ers handled Smith’s concussion.

Branch passed along comments from Kaepernick about his opinion of the 49ers quarterback position.

Maiocco offered his offensive and defensive review of the 32-7 Monday night victory over the Chicago Bears.

49ers.com’s daily coverage included Aldon Smith’s Player of the Week Award, the signing of new practice squad safety Eddie Whitley, a look ahead to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (video/story) and other events coming to Santa Clara in the Future and Week 11 Notes and Quotes.

the rest of the season is going to be a fight ….a real fight everyone in our division wants to blast us ..the saints have a grudge to settle the dolphins well a win against the niners might save some jobs…the patriots they do not want to lose to us they do not respect us or even put us in their league…..so if he is cleared alex will start …and the excuses now will be a after thought if alex goes 4 series of 3 and out check down ball in the saints game look for a QB change ….or hey alex might do like he did in the saints game …go for it all or nothing ….either way we need the wins to win the division and the rest will be just that…. the rest of it is just dust in the wind …..

key to game moss has to get some catches and force a double and triple team to open anything up even the run ..the saints are gearing for alex so they are going to stack the line to stuff the run …..and that is where we have to beat em with stellar throws past the 15 yard line and push em back off the line and then bleed em for running yards and stick the long ball when they dont know what to do ….yes of course it sounds easy and should be we have stars at every position and should be the favorite in every game ….but those stars have to be able to play their game …and not get out of rythem with 3 and outs becase the check down was not there

watch carefully…coach will dial up a great game plan sunday..kap will play good again making plays under pressure this is what the niners need…goooo foward with this offense…bombs to moss…down the middle to vernon and outs to manningham thats what they got these guys for right? open it up…i’d like to see ginn on some reverses..or williams mix it up thats the wild card kap gives u sorry alex fans but it’s kaps to keep now…a tough tough place to play and the saints r hot…so a great test for kap and the niners d…

  18. By mfkram64 on Nov 22, 2012 | Reply

i’m going to stir the pot but if kap plays good and niners win again sunday that will be a win against a bears team who were 7-2 great d and if they win which they will sunday that will be start and second win for kap against the hottest team last 6 weeks on the road…if he plays bad and they loss o well go back to alex but if what i just said happens alex will be the backup for rest of year..which is good for trade bait next year cause he’s good and teams will want him..then tolzan will be backup see what coach has set it up…a great future for niner fans…

Now remember, this is not a divisional game so if it doesn’t turn out right, it’s going to be ok, it’s already been mention the saints will prepare for the arm of the Colin and so here comes the running game, is the team practicing with the load speakers anybody ?. GO 49ER, S

You give Alex that amount of time and we don’t miss a beat, Alex is rated 4th in the NFL above Brady if like stats? So Alex is playing that good, and he sure the hell has EARNED the right to finish this season as Our QB! And if the O’line give Alex that much time ‘Yes’ he can throw down field.
And the games we lost this ‘blowouts’ I don’t think Colin would have done any better? In both of those game were da Bears!!

9erdog from reading some of your post you’ve seen a lot of games just like me over the years, we as fan are always going to question the decision making of the head coach in our sport when a favorite player is pulled ,lets wait until after the game to make a better judgment ,me I fully expected Alex to be playing this coming Sunday …..

Let the best quarterback start…PERIOD. Don’t worry about “who’s earned it.” Don’t worry about some poor baby getting his “feelings hurt.”
