Niner Talk: Bye Week

Posted by Taylor Price on November 2, 2012 – 1:36 PM

The voice of the San Francisco 49ers Ted Robinson was profiled in a 49ers.com feature story earlier today along with his broadcasting partner Eric Davis. Robinson, however, played double-duty for 49ers.com on Friday, also joining us for our latest Niner Talk podcast.

The respected broadcaster discussed his bright spots of the first half of the season, naming third-year guard Mike Iupati and second-year cornerback Chris Culliver as his two most unsung players of the first half for the 49ers.

Robinson also touched on the dominant 49ers rushing attack and defensive efforts, plus the team’s recent breakout passing performance against Arizona. Robinson had special praise for fourth-year wideout Michael Crabtree, too.

Here are some of the highlights from the interview.

TED ROBINSON

[3:50 Robinson’s thoughts on the challenge of staying on top of Greg Roman’s in-game offensive substitutions.]

“That’s a good question, I haven’t been perfect at it. There was a couple of weeks where Colin (Kaepernick) was taking a lot of snaps and I got caught up in not noticing he had come on the field. I had been trained last year watching Greg Roman’s offense to constantly pay attention for personnel. Often times I can’t focus on as thoroughly as I want to what Eric (Davis) might be saying because I am watching to see are we running jumbo? Last year they used (Isaac) Sopoaga, this year (Will) Tukuafu’s in the game. Is Ted Ginn in the game? Because if he is, you’ve got to be careful for the fly-sweep or the fly-motion. Suddenly, then Colin is a possibility at quarterback. It does keep you guessing and if it does it to me you can imagine what it’s doing to the other defense.”

[5:50 Robinson’s thoughts on the strides taken by the 49ers against Arizona.]

“Everybody knows action speak a lot louder than words and what the 49ers did to prepare for 2012 was to give themselves a better pass-attack. What you saw in this Arizona game in particular was the best football Michael Crabtree has played as a 49er. I’m not sure how the coaches would break that down, but to me, that was the best football Michael has played. He was directly responsible for 17 points and that’s the kind of impact you like seeing.”
