Morning Tailgate: Nov. 2

Posted by Taylor Price on November 2, 2012 – 10:45 AM

Randy Moss has caught 13 passes for 235 yards and has two touchdowns, plus a team-leading average of 18.1 yards per reception in his first eight games with the San Francisco 49ers.

The future Hall of Fame wide receiver has had a positive impact on his teammates and has enjoyed learning the offensive concepts of coordinator Greg Roman. Moss shared these insights in a recent interview with Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

The 49ers wideout who caught a 47-yard touchdown last week in Arizona (photographed above) also tells CSN he plans on being a (high school or junior high) coach when his playing career is over.

Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News passes along the comments of a current Hall of Famer, 49ers quarterback Steve Young, who shared his thoughts on Alex Smith’s recent performances.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle caught up with Smith for his thoughts on a funny Visa commercial featuring the 49ers quarterback.

Ben Stockwell of ProFootballFocus.com offers more analysis from the 49ers recent win and names Michael Crabtree his Player of the Game.

The happiest bye week on earth.

so lets get into how alex can get better any takers

  13. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

obviously not because you think he is a probowler and a superbowl winner allready …..wow way to go alex you fooled the front office and got paid millions and then deceived millions of fans as they wait for something you can not give em because you refuse to throw the ball deep

  14. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

and yes it is that simple if alex would throw deep even out of bounds and make the defensive coordinator and the DB’s at least think twice before stacking the line ….i mean this would only help gore from being pounded help alex from being pounded ….help the o-line form being pounded ….and maybe open up the offense and yes win a superbowl….it is that simple …without that doubt for the other team alex will be forced to throw and make accurate completions …wich he can not do …and force all the rest of the team to wait or be traded or go into freeagency after years of hard work and nothing to show for it ….these guys work hard i mean real hard and to have everything depending on that one guy to get the ball out in time or not take a lazy sack is just ……

11 years i think the first sign of dementia is talking to yourself. Unless you are simply looking for attention i think we all got your view on A Smith. I for one think you are entitled to your opinion but at the same time maybe you can take the Saints game last year and even the Giants who you keep using as a example (By the way Smith and the rest of the Niners actually won that game it was All on Kyle Williams) to give credit where credit is due. Other than A Rodgers, Smith has the most wins in the league since 2010. So he has to be doing something right. Right?

well u won’t admit that 11-hmr1 is same guy, so i’ll call what J.H. say to guys like u ” FUNK JIVE TURKEY GOOBLER” wake up to reality were on top of the division and one of the top 5 team in the league, and who’s at the driver seat??? of course alex smith, u want him to throw the ball deep just to impress u,even if he throws it at medium range and the result is good across the board…the important thing is we are winning..thats all it matters…what his doing is protecting ball…and at the same time caution of his reads…thats how football is suppose to be played…he will bring us to the promise land were no qb, has brought us before in decades…put that in ur head…so least u got something in there other than air……

sounds like al davis on crack throw the ball deep throw the ball deep throw the ball deep, doesnt work in the nfl, we have the perfect recipe for sucsess run the ball, opens up throwing the ball, tough defense and awesome special teams, you need to be strong on all 3 , which oddly cost us the nfc championship, 2 special teams turnovers, we got this all we gotta do is execute the plan gooooooniners !!!

  19. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 2, 2012 | Reply

I am so tired of his clogging of the blog with his tireless hate of alex, anytime anyone shows him how wrong he is he glosses right over it, countless coaches in the nfl, current and retired, have praised alex for his continued growth and development under coach harbaugh’s tootalage, PROVING ONCE AND FOR ALL

I swear the filth and un-truths and the postively absurd comments he makes regarding our team are totally un-believable,,I honestly think he believes himself smarter than coach harbaugh and trent baallke. we all know that alex is not an upper-tier qb. of course he has limitations, what nfl qb doesnt? yes brees throws the ball down field alot, but I see only a few wins for that team this year. WE DONT NEED ALEX TO THROW FOR 350 YEDS EVERY GAME. all we need from alex is continued smart play making, and limit the turnovers. I see this team of ours winning 11 games this year hosting a home playoff game and then going to atlanta for the NFC champshp game, where alex can show mike nolan what kind of qb he has become. mike nolan is the defensive co-ordinatoor for the falcons,,,wouldnt that be great to be nolan with alex throwing the winning td,,,

No game in the NFL is a Gimme. That’s why our team Lost last year against the Cardinals. They overlooked the Cards and the Cards said “Nuh uh son we ain’t easy like that”.

Notice that our team did not sleep on Arizona no matter who their QB or Line is. I’m glad they didn’t.

Its a blog! The purpose of a blog is to post opinions. I hated Dana Hall. I couldnt stand that it took Seifert so long to put Merton at FS! Should i have cheered for Dana just because he was our starting safety or bash him because his missed tackles cost us loss after loss against the cowboys???
I LOVE Alex Smith. I just dont think he should be our starting qb. Backup? Yes. Captain? Absolutely! Can he take us past the dominant defenses in the NFC? I havent seen that in 8 years and i dont think thats gonna change. But i hope I’m wrong.

Moon, Warner, Brett Favre, and lets not forget about Steve Young remember all that talk about him when he first started, each and everyone that’s in the hall of fame has lost a championship game …..Alex is the man until further notice ……GO 49ER, S…

i agree that a first round pick should be able to help do something right away, but we do have solid vets ahead of him, still that kid is quick let him run down the field if for no other reason that he has young fresh legs and that makes the de more tired chasing him on a play or 2. wooooot niners !!!!

to say that dana hall’s missed tackles cost us games against the cowboys is as dumb as someone saying it was merton hanks missed tackles that cost us games against the cowboys,,,see my point? its his way of saying its the same thing with alex, why should he cheer for alex when he knows that alex is going to choke?,,see? he obviously doesnt see the difference between the qb spot and a defensive player, to compare the two is utterly insane and without merit

  42. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

hall sucked as a safety and hanks sucked as a corner, alex doesnt suck at being a qb, he only just started learning how to play the position at the nfl level. he has shown continued growth and development under the guidance of greg roman and coach harbaugh

  43. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

wow so now instead of showing how alex can be better or is the man you bring up so amny other things to cloud the issue

  44. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

thats what blows me away more than anything, alex has shown growth and improvement under coach harbaugh and is playing better this year than he was last year at this point. a fact which has been widely pointed out by steve young, jon gruden, ron jaworski, even joe montana has said alex has made great strides this year, all local and national media outlets have talked about the vast improvement of smith under harbaugh, why cant these guys who keep bashing alex? I will tell you why. they have not let go of all the losing we did under nolan and singletary

  45. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

noooooooo he is the same as he was when we got him …only reason he has done anything is the defnese is better and the caoches have geared the offense to a slow roll for alex to keep up ….

  48. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

as a matter of fact, you yourself still cant bring yourself to admith the fact that alex is playing better this year than even you thought he would. and yet you keep glossing right over the issue of the obvious growth and development of alex under the guidance of harbaugh

  49. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

alex needs to throw the ball deep every now and then to show the defense he is able to do it or they creep up and slam the run and shut down the short dump off and alex is forced to throw down field …wich is his downfall…they force alex to throw for all he gets and alex folds everytime a defense can pull it off with their personel ….and good teams superbowl teams will put alex in that situation everytime

  50. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

basically we have been sitting around for 7 years waiting for alex to do anything for all the millions and now he does very limited work against teams that do not have the personel to stop him …great nice job alex but to go to the syuperbowl and win he is well short of any attributes to bolster the offense and lead em ….as in the giants game well both of em now alex was shown the door and to get to the superbowl we need to more than likely go through the giants and that is not good for the niners with alex at the helm

  51. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

he does throw the ball deep every now and then

  52. By 11yearswithalex on Nov 3, 2012 | Reply

and really all the coaches rave how good alex is ……..lol really you believe anything coahces say good about our team when they have to play us …..then you are the one not a niner fan ….everyone lies ….even coaches forced to say something good about another team

your arguments are tired and worn out, all you EVER bring to this blog is how much you hate alex and how we cant win anything with him, we won the nfc west with him, a come from behind victory in the playoffs against the saints with alex throwing the ball downfield to win it. your hatred of alex blinds you to all the good he has done since harbaugh took over. he aint never going to be brees or brady like but if its good enuff to win it all isnt that enuff? your saying he cant do it without waiting for the end of the year. you know, like last year when you said that no way would the 49ers make the playoffs with alex and if they did you would say you were wrong but you wouldnt have to cuz alex wont be able to do it. you still wrong and havent yet admitted it. just like you wont admit that alex is playing better than even you expected

Trash talking about Alex the week after he won NFL Offensive Player of the Week? Really? Even against the same team that hadn’t given up more than 21 points in the first seven weeks of the year? Alex Smith was the first quarterback to throw three touchdowns against the Cardinals all year (Tom Brady threw one). Ridiculous.

No matter what type of positive or negative post that is on this site, I guess everyone has a crystal ball and can see into the future and that when they signed Jim that we would be in the position that we are in now, and I told my neighbor that Alex finally has a coach that knows that position. Let’s go back in history a little; Young got beat how many times before he got past Dallas. Question to the fans that worry about Alex, would you rather have Kap at QB, s for this stretch run going into NOV. ?

head 1: fair enough! Some here just do not get it, no one player can win or lose a game, and every player has a share in either a win or a loss. And if a player has an exceptional game he may get the game ball MVP, and as in Alex’s case
“NFL Offensive Player of the Week” but even at that, it took all the players on all each squad doing their jobs for Alex to get that award ………. !

  73. By dave g. on Nov 4, 2012 | Reply

The biggest reason we lost to the Cowboys in the early 90’s was because we basically gave them Charles Haley. If we don’t make that trade we win those playoff games. PERIOD.

Come on ace, I’m sure you know that you have to be able to throw the deep ball, can’t live by it, but you need to keep the ‘D’
honest right? Also isn’t that the reason that we picked up Moss, throw the ball deep, and high, and moss will comedown with it 80% of the time, use to be 95% but we all get old, eh? Next up the Rams thought somebody say, easy win?
No game in the NFL is a give-me, they have a great Coach, and a solid ‘D’ so we must, and will, take them serious!

  83. By 49erdefense2012 on Nov 4, 2012 | Reply

anyway, it was great article, even montana believes in alex, even if he is limtited in what he does. rather to play smart and not turn the ball over than to throw downfield 5-6 times a game and possibly turn the ball over 2-3 times. our 1st two super bowl wins were done with that early walsh formula and thats what jim harbaugh is running. man, montana backing alex should be enough for any naysayers untill the season is over and all the cards are on the table,, GO 49ERS!

LOL, no man I believe that alex can lead us to the promised land. but im also very aware of what alex’s limitations are as well. I agree with you that we should push the ball down the field more but to a degree. of course when were behind at the end of a game, that goes withoout saying, but during the game, only do it when things are in your favor, not out of desperation. and we have seen alex push the ball down the field in the last couple of games, just enough to make teams have to prepare for it, but not demand it to become a staple of our offense, its not who we are.,,,,GO 49ERS,,,IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST

“throw downfield 5-6 times a game and possibly turn the ball over 2-3 times.”
Alex is better then that, now how does that sound like J-11?

Thats what I was wondering about, but I sure the h-ll wasn’t taking a shot at you, just a question, that all don’t go postal!

your right I didn’t know it was quote? but yeah we cool!
Its just that I have that much faith in Alex, he can throw the deep ball, if anything I question Roman not his abilities not at all, but his choices in play calling.
And yes you’re wife is right! aren’t they always, thats what mine tells me.

9erdog..We know the story on Haley BUT you missed my point! And by the way, we did NOT have to trade Haley. Seifert dropped the ball, he should have got him help. And by the way, do you have any idea what the Elephant position is? Why you bringing Dean in the conversation?

yes we do need to throw the ball deep sometimes sure ive seen alex do it vernon davis gets most of those but teams are working on him so someone else needs to make those grabs for sure, and i agree about alex smith playing a lot like young joe , its called smart football, and we win , gooooo niners !!!!

    * I’m a 9ers fan for all of my life, and I live on the other side of the world here in Australia. I have read all the ‘posts’ here on this ‘thread’ and I’m disappointed to see that there are still so many ‘fans’ and ‘armchair critics’ that seem to think that they know more than the 9ers couching staff! What the hell does Alex have to do to ‘satisfy’ and ‘appease’ some of you lot? Why are some of you still ‘bashing’ him even though he has to his credit turned his game around 180%? To my mind, it takes a good ‘D’, a good O’, and a good ‘ST’, and in NO particular order, to win games consistently, it’s ALL about a sustained COMBINED effort!

I do however believe that a top team must have a great ‘D’ in order to prevail in the long run. The Dolphins of the 80’s is a prime example of that! If you ‘bleed’ points in games you are going to lose more often than you win, good ‘O’ or not! To me, Gridiron is a game of yardage and percentages! To go ‘deep’ all the time is a ‘foolish’ ploy indeed, it’s a narrow minded view of how the game, or QB’s should play the game. To me, going deep/long is a low % gain, with a high % risk. To throw short is a medium/high % gain, with a medium % risk. To run the ball is a low % risk, with a low % risk. Enough said!

#11, I have found some of you comments to be offensive, short-sighted, naive, and confrontational to say the least! Should you seek to engage with other ‘fans’ and come across with a decent amount of ‘credibility’ you may want to think about engaging the brain before you engage the mouth! Ps; a little knowledge of the game and it’s many intricacies wouldn’t go astray either…….

Go 9ers, LOVE and Respect from down under!!!!!!!!!!!

Ps; (with a low % risk. Enough said!) should say – with a high % gain. Enough said!…This being at the end of the second paragraph. *Sorry about any confusion I may have created by this ‘typo’…..And by the way, I’m hoping that we do go ALL THE WAY this year, with both Alex and Michael being huge contributors amongst the rest of the team. At least then all those persistent ‘knockers’ of these two lads would have to eat huge quantities of ‘humble pie’ and may well even choke on it!!!

    9ers ALL the WAY 2012……….

Davealexc66. That was well said; I could not help but laugh at the last paragraph concerning 11yrs that individual has been doing that for as long as I’ve been posting on this site; I played rugby for 7 yrs and because of my height and weight I played second row…GO 49ER, S …….

Yes I got your point, the cowpies don’t make the SB in 91? if they don’t get Haley< yeah? The Elephant position was created by Bill to keep Fred Dean on the field and get the QB ?
Yes we did have to trade Haley, Seifert told the team they were going to watch a film of a team that played Defense 'RIGHT' that put Haley over the top, he demanded to be traded and he became a cancer in the locker room.
Anytime I hear Haley's name I think of Dean, what Haley was for the cowpies Dean was for us IMHO !

seagulls beat the Vik’s, steelers beat the giants, all in all a pretty good weekend for us, and we didn’t even play, amen!

@Davealex66, that sir, was well said. I have been trying to get that very point across to 11years with no brain for 8 months now. indeed, every single one of your points is well validated ,and well said. I deem the alex bashers to be band wagon jumping fans to begin with. fans who obviously jumped off ship after the garcia period and with the new found sucess have jumped back on the wagon remembering the play of alex at the beginging of his career and blame him for all the losing, right up to the point when harbaugh took over. and with the loss to the giants in the champshp game, blame alex for everything,,,,,again….
alex smith has absolutley turned it around with coach harbaugh. will he ever be brees or brady like, at this point one would have to say no, but with the current squad we have,we dont need that kind of qb play. alex is well suited to lead this team to a super bowl and quite gifted enough to win it. g’day mate, and hoist a few frosty’s for us yanks across the pond. GO 49ERS!!! IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST
