Morning Tailgate: Oct. 18

Posted by Taylor Price on October 18, 2012 – 10:36 AM

Thursday night’s matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks features plenty of intriguing storylines. San Francisco’s first divisional game of 2012 is also one with first-place implications. The matchup of 4-2 teams in a three-way tie for first-place in the NFC West also figures to be a clash of two of the best defenses in the NFL.

A cause of concern for the 49ers, however, is the health of Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley, who is questionable to return to game action after suffering a concussion against the New York Giants.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee looked at the injury reports of both teams and addressed the potential matchups for Staley’s replacement.

“His status likely won’t be known until 90 minutes before kickoff when teams submit their inactive lists. Whether (Staley) plays or not, left tackle will be a focal point tonight,” Barrows wrote. “Seahawks speed rusher Chris Clemons (team-leading seven sacks) will line up opposite the left tackle and the Seahawks also will place rookie Bruce Irvin, whom the 49ers were eying before the draft, on that side of the line at times.”

Another challenge for the 49ers will be limiting the production of Pro Bowl running back Marshawn Lynch.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote about San Francisco challenge of stopping Lynch, a runner who’s enjoyed success against the 49ers.

“San Francisco’s 19-17 win at Seattle last year, Lynch (107 yards) broke the 49ers’ string of 36 straight games without allowing a 100-yard rusher and accounted for a season-high eight missed tackles,” Branch wrot.e “(Vic) Fangio ranked Lynch ahead of Philadelphia’s LeSean McCoy and Baltimore’s Ray Rice, other elite backs the 49ers faced in 2011.”

The all-times series in knotted at 13 games apiece between the two franchises. San Francisco has also never lost at home on a Thursday night (2-0). Tonight’s 5:20 p.m. PT kick-off from Candlestick Park can be seen on NFL Network or KGO TV, or heard on the radio on KGO 810 and 107.7 The Bone. All the pre-game information for die-hard 49ers Faithful can be read in this Goal Posts blog entry.

Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News provides Jim Harbaugh’s comments from a recent episode of Showtime’s “Inside the NFL.”

Inman also looked at how the 49ers matchup against Seahawks rookie quarterback Russell Wilson.

ESPN.com’s Mike Sando shares his final pre-travel thoughts on the 49ers-Seahawks matchup.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com rated the Willis-Lynch matchup No. 3 on his key matchups series.

49ers.com looked at Frank Gore’s readiness for Seattle, interviewed Kyle Williams for the latest Niner Talk podcast, examined the defense’s success against the deep ball and shared photos and details of Alumni Weekend, including its first-ever bocce ball tournament.

Nice to get support from the two-time Pro Bowl, All-Pro and four-time Super Bowl champion 49ers offensive lineman.

another good defense for the struggleing offense to test themselves against …must be close to mid season when all these games turn into must wins instead of whatever games …..if the niners continue their M.O. then the next 2 games should be wins …then a flop against a good team …..or maybe they will hold on to 1st place for the remainder of the season all bets are off on the QB situation as alex will be the starter till hurt or he retires and or coach gets canned

feel free to limit your responses to …uhhh and duuude and the line blows and anyother excuses for alex you may come up with ….if you watched last game he was horrible …and i ask you to watch this game as the defense will be employing the same concept against alex cover everything short and force alex to make plays ….whenever a team does that alex flops …no surprise

It is pointless to be logical with 11 and the other guy who’s name I don’t care to scroll up to find… This team could win 10 superbowls in a row, with Alex under center) and they would still tell us that he really sucks and the 49ers won’t really be a good team until we get a different QB in. They just have too much invested… to many years blaming everything on the QB, to change their oppinion now. Whatever his name is said “I find myself saying “just don’t throw a pick” all the time”… Are you kidding? I don’t even need to explain why that statement is so stupid. Did Alex have a great game last week? No. So what. No one on the niners had a great game. No one. Offensive line allowed 6 sacks, Defence allowed 100 yard rusher, DB’s missed a few easy picks, 2 missed FG’s, 3 picks, blown return coverages, questionable play calling, costly penalties, etc etc. It just wasn’t our day. Move on. May Alex Smith be a niner for life. May AS haters find a new team or something else to blame for their miserable existence.

So much hate on these posts, noone can take opinions and criticisms. People calling each other names. Some need to grow up, these are blog posts. We write how we feel here about our team. Dont need to be a blog bully. Hey I never liked J.T. O’Sullivan, Tim Rattay, or Elvis Grbac, it didnt make me a Niner Faithful. I just didnt like them. I hope you’re not that guy that did the stabbing at the stick. You love AS I get it, but you dont need to hate. I hope someday we can get our Franchise QB like Montana and Young. For now we got what we can work with. Goooooooooo Niners!

  14. By 9erdog on Oct 18, 2012 | Reply

There have been a couple of players that I didn’t care for, for one reason or another, BUT I always wanted them to play well and when they did they turned me into a believer. But if a person doesn’t like Alex we are going to jump in, because he is out QB and we’re going to back him, pure and simple thats just a fact. So we say if you plan to bashing Alex? you’d be better off to just move on!
Find a place where thats what they do and you’d be happy and we’d be happy, make sense does to me, eh?

  15. By odgse on Oct 18, 2012 | Reply

We all want AS to play well. We have to work with what we got. If everyone just likes praise and can’t take critisisms. Maybe they should’nt be reading a blog if it easily offends them. Is this not what these goal posts are all about. How we feel would make the Niners a better if not great team?

niners need a real QB who can score and not go 7 3 and outs for a half ….sad really i would rather see anyone out there whom will get better and actually put the niners where they belong on top and winning superbowls …been to long need better QB ..and alex is only makeing it obvious

  18. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 18, 2012 | Reply

but of course the excuses for alex will run rampent oh he never had anyone to throw to or the line sucked or the playcalls were off ….hey wake up it is alex who cant get it done not the rest of the team

great game guys, great all around…defense did a great job limiting that offense to 6 points. offense did enough to win the game. I thought Ginn did a great job returning everything, special team was solid. We all like Kyle W. but he is probably too tender to be in the kick off returning role. I think he’s better off in the WR role, let him get some confidence in couple of years (if that’s the plans) before he take on returning again, or not. Love the game. Hard fought, hard won.

    Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Niners!!!!!

alex was off with that pick he threw should have hit wide open moss in back of endzone wtf love alex but u gotta hit that one buddy

  26. By odgse on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

Good game. Should have been a blowout on our part. Seattle defense was definitely great keeping us at 13.
    Go Niners!

  27. By temper11 on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

11 you crack me up… AS doesn’t throw the ball “he’s got no confidence”, he does throw it and it gets picked “he doesn’t make good decisions”. He throws it for a completion or a touchdown “he isn’t throwing it as good as you think he should”. You’re posts are so tired. Yes… we know there will be a QB change because Kapernick is the savior… just like the other parade of QB’s that have come through here in the last 10 years that you claimed were going to be the saviors. But this time for sure… with Kap we’ll win! Except that we are already 5 – 2 with our current QB and 1st in our suddenly stellar division. That was a brawl last night. Both teams playing very physical. Offense made adjustments at the half and came out and moved the ball very well. Exactly what they needed to win. AS came out and went 6 for 6 on TD drive. High percentage on the second as well, just unfortunately through the pick. We came away with the W becuase we made the plays and they didn’t. Just like Justin Smith said in the post game… “Wins and Losses matter…. Stats are for losers”.

bow53 i’m not bashing harbaugh i’m stating the turth..they wanted manning they didn’t get him so they were left with alex..what is with some of u..u take this blog way to serious..it’s just ones opinion of a player..do u really think alex looks comfortable back there? to me he looks way off…this isn’t his first, second or third year in football…it’s one thing to make mistakes but he has done them time an time again..i love the niner defense but i’m tired of watching them, they r on the field way to much.the fact of the matter is they still have to keep the offense simple for alex.. come on they got moss and manningham to open up the offense..of coarse it’s great they won but u have to look at the whole picture..how much can the defense do every game? if u feel alex is playing good so be it i guess..i guess some people take me the wrong way..i’m a niner fan true an true 38 years..they have a great d an good skill position players just like to see them perform at a better level..don’t just be satisfied..i agree with justin smith stats r for losers thats why alex goes 18 for 24 no picks big deal it’s make the big play when u need to..go 9 for 25 who cares make the 3rd and 10 play with 2:20 left on the clock..that’s more important.

  29. By temper11 on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

but that’s the thing mfkram64… he has made the big play when he needs to. He was tied last year for 4th quarter come from behind victories. Then the argument is he can’t run away with it, and he puts up the best numbers in the league in a 9er route…. Hater’s complain that he isn’t confident when he’s not throwing interceptions. Then he throws a few interceptions and you guys say he isn’t making good decisions. It doesn’t matter how good or bad he does. How many games the niners win… haters gotta hate, you have been hating on him so long, if he is good, then you must have been wrong. And you’d rather lose than be wrong. Do I think Alex is the best QB in the league? No. But he is my favorite QB I’ve ever routed for – and as a 49er fan, that’s is saying alot. I also believe he is the RIGHT QB for this team. How can anyone not route for this dude?

  30. By mfkram64 on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

i will get off your blog..it’s sad but because u don’t like the way a player plays and u critize them on a blog people take it personal…i’m way to mature to waste my time and read people calling me names..it’s easy to hide behind a computer..bottom line is the niners need a qb who can make the big play in the game not just one or two big plays a year.they have a great defense and a solid offensive line..all world running back and tight end a team that is ready to win a super bowl…but they have alex…..look at your last 10 super bowl winners..rate the qb’s… they weren’t average qb’s..last one was dilfer..good luck with your blog…i hope alex brings u… well…l i don;t think he’ll bring u a super bowl….

  31. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

well if you would like to root for alex that is ok …if you meant he will be routed from the team then i say more than likely ….the running game saved that game …not alex the seahawks did alex a favor and ran the same defensive scheme as the giants so maybe next time alex will say to himslef oh yeah i can throw to the running back rather than throw a pick ……the running game won the game as well as the defense ….a toss to walker at the end was not alex the first half was all alex and his inability to read the defense and understand what they are doing to him …..he lacks any NFL knowledge after 7 years he still looks like a deer in headlights …..

  32. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

and you must be missing the point …..any average QB can do what alex is doing …even the kaeper could do what alex is doing ….checking down and dumping off every play …..becuase alex can not throw deep accurately ..as dispalyed in the first half where he over threw williams twice for TD’s …..and even in your rainbow world of dreams and unicorns ….alex can not win a superbowl or even get to one that will not happen ….andn that is unacceptable for me and that is why i have a problem with him he just cant cut it and even with your so called new weapons he looks exactly the same …..and that is bad for the niners….

  33. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

you would think after 7 years and yes several different playbooks all running the simmialr version of west coast …alex would have some sort of anything yet he looks exactly like he did when they drafted him …a average QB that might get better …and never does ….love him all day long …but i want superbowls not rainbows and unicorns …fantasy of him being anything but average is your thing not mine ….

  34. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

alex always shows his inability against good offenses with good defenses …they force him to win the game ..,.he cant and the rest of the team suffers …it looks sad and that is not what i want for the niners …..too many years have gone by …even the bengals are starting to look good and being looked at to go to the superbowl and the niners are laughed at becasue of alex and they know it will be an hope and a prayer and a lot of bad defense for alex to get to and or win a superbowl

  35. By 9erdog on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

A win is a win is a win! And yes before any Alex bashers start going here, yes Alex missed seeing Moss in the end zone!
So lets just put that to rest, And we saw kap again Wow he got rundown by a 300 pounder, other teams are waiting for that one.

  36. By 9erdog on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

As far the pick in that part of the field red`zone’ I thought that was the reason we picket up Jacob, so his rather large frame all 265 pounds of it would be running downhill into the End`zone?? Didn’t see him or our offensives MIA’s, eh. sure dose seems like our offense could use a boost?
But we did win and now we have about 9 days, to get it our offense together, eh?

1st good morning to u , 2nd that was a good fought game, glad we came on top,3rd that blog is not intent 4 u is 4 ur good buddy 11 yrs. w/ alex, i’ll chat w/ u more but got an errand to do,see u later dude….

As J.H says you’re either getting better or getting worse, well because of the fact that we won we must be getting better. A fact that J-11 seems to over look, but then why doesn’t that surprise me! One step at a time, one play at a time, one game at a time! Next up Zona! at their house and they always give us grief, but coach has 9 days too coach us up!

  39. By ace on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

yeah that red zone play seemed like the perfect opportunitty to bring in jumbo package with jacobs and smash it in, i love it when they bring in like 7 lineman size guys to set that up, and with moss in that package, hes open with one guy on him, so you have an option to throw as well

  40. By ace/abrahamer on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

yes a win is a win 5-2 woooooot first place woooooot, niners look good woooot, whole nfc west looks good woooot, its more fun to watch when the lvl of compition is higher, seems like teams are way more aware of us, which means to me that we are seriosly good team cuz every team we face plays us like we something they want, a chance to win a superbowl, gooooooo niners, superharbaugh bowl !!!! called it niners vs ravens lets go make it happen !!!

  41. By ace/abrahamer on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

or maybe niners vs broncos alex smith vs p manning, now that would be super !!!
ofcourse that would be the perfect game to shut up evrybody and teach people that football is the ultimate team game !!! with the ultimate niner nation behind them this is NINER TIME GOOOOOONINERS !!!

  42. By ace/abrahamer on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

and a win on a short week almost turns into a bye week which means more time to prepare for arizona, which really does help,we are building up momentum,we will beat arizona and be sitting alone atop the much improved nfc west, yea niners goooooo get some niners time baby !!!!

  43. By 49erdefense2012 on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

ok,at the game we saw a tired team slog through the 1st half, then we saw our teams natural ability to compete come alive in the 2nd half. yup, alex missed on a couple wide open shots early in the 1st half and then randy moss play,,,,,,,
when alex saw randy he was already running for his life and for anyone to say he had time to stand there and throw the ball weren’t watching the same game as I. I waited untill I had watched the game twice on my dvr before I posted this morning knowing there would be the usual naysayers, and by the way ram mouth, when did you EVER see post that I love alex?? I have said, and will always asy, alex is an above avg. qb playing a system that is a good fit and is blessed with a powerful running game

  44. By 49erdefense2012 on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

and success is achiveable for him ON THIS TEAM,,,you know OUR team,,ok, back to the game, an ugly 1st half, a defensive statement in the 2nd half,,,no vernon, no big deal, vernon was helping the o-line mangle the seahawks front 4,,, d-laine got it done for him,,,if we can keep this momentum in the running game going into arizona next monday, I like our chances of going 6-2 into our bye and 2-0 in the nfc west,,,bringing us that much closer to our goal of winning the nfc weat crown and securing our shot in the play-offs

  45. By 9erdog on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

I have to say, I’m not real happy with game play calling, I understand seattle has a great defense I get that! What I don’t get is why no Jacobs, he was listed to play and we had the prefect time to play him but we went with Kap! Why?
I’ve posted that I wasn’t to see more of Moss even the talking heads brought that up, he was so open in the back of the end`zone that I don’t understand why not try again.
I get the feeling that Romans afraid to let Alex go deep, yeah maybe I’m wrong but just what I feelLast year we didn’t have the tool, well this year we sure the h e l l do, but we don’t use them …. so come on bucket`up and let’er rip!

  46. By Les on Oct 19, 2012 | Reply

Glad for the W. Alex just can’t seem to throw deep with consistancy. I believe he missed three deep receivers last night. Good adjustment at the half to start hitting the middle receivers. Need to come up with some different options for Kap; they are on to what he has been running. Always sweet to beat the former coach of USC. (Univ of Spoiled Children). Need to beat Arizona to set the bar.

Eleven Years wants to see Alex fail. When he plays good Eleven makes excuses and when he plays bad (every QB has)he enjoys every minute of it. Thats not a fan. Thats an insecure loser who reminds me of Patton Oswalt’s character in the movie “Big Fan”. He is some pathetic loser.
