Morning Tailgate: Oct. 12

Posted by Taylor Price on October 12, 2012 – 11:11 AM

Alex Smith’s had a whirlwind seven-day stretch to say the least.

John Branch of the New York Times summed it up succinctly in a recent story.

“In this, the eighth chapter of The Many Lives of Alex Smith, the San Francisco quarterback leads the league in passer rating, coolly commands a high-scoring offense that sets a single-game yardage record, is deemed such a local celebrity that he tosses the ceremonial first pitch of a baseball playoff series and talks football with the president,” Branch wrote.

The week could get even better if the 49ers quarterback wins the FedEx Air Player of the Week award. And, if he beats the New York Giants this Sunday at Candlestick Park.

Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle passes along the comments of Giants offensive coordinator Kelvin Gilbride, who believes Justin Smith gets away with defensive holding.

Branch also writes about the 49ers success cramping Harbaugh’s coaching style.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee looks at the chances of Brandon Jacobs making his 49ers debut this Sunday.

CBSSports.com’s Kyle Bonagura shares Jacobs comments about returning to 100-percent health.

FoxSports.com’s Alex Marvez looks at the 49ers mindset heading into a NFC title game rematch.

49ers.com looked at Mario Manningham’s recent do-it-all versatility with his new team.

49ers five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis joined the latest Niner Talk podcast.

49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks joined this week’s 49ers.com “Weekly Conversation.”

Wear red, get loud (except with the 49ers have the ball on offense).

Way to go Coach, back your players, they appreciate it and so do we! On the other hand it does say who their worried about! …. The Beast is in their thoughts!

Jacobs not to happy, said he’s been healthy for 2 weeks, then retracts thats, sounds like he’s ready to go. Yeah I understand the coaches know what their doing but at the same time Jacobs wants to be a part of this team, they gotta get him in there, IMHO he needs too get hit ?

The think the press in putting to much into these tow lopsided wins, 600 yards bla bla states wise it looks good, but we all know the weakness of both team. Yeah it was great fun but in no way should anybody think we’re a super team, and the giants are going to play us very tough they always do. should be a real fistfight!

I say put Jacobs in for one series and see how that knee holds up, yes this game is IMPORTANT but next week is the first step to the playoffs as we all know a knee is something that you don’t want to take lightly. Remember Jim has to look at the big picture .some of you will understand what am saying in that last statement about the head coach.

same old story …wait and see …if it goes well the coach knows what he is doing if it goes bad …well maybe next time ….

  7. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 13, 2012 | Reply

the real deal is this the coach is not the GM ….Balke is …the coach trys to get the most out fo the players he and Balke agree on getting or keeping

  8. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 13, 2012 | Reply

alex is not every teams dream QB ..thats obvious by the offseason snub …yet the giants vikings and ravens all know how to stop alex and have the personel to do it ….so the niners need to offer new looks and new plan to adjust to the weaknesses of alex and get a win …man i hate the giants

  9. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 13, 2012 | Reply

basically alex needs to take control of the game and not let the giants dictate how he plays ….yet that is an alex flaw right there he only takes what is given and the giants only give him the checkdown wich leads to 3and outs and bad football ….dont be that checkdown guy alex ….that will lead to an eye patch ..and when you wear and eye patch ..people think your tough and want to find out how tough ….then you end up …well with T.O. claiming everyone wants you to play for them

I got feeling that were going to see Dobbs getting the ball and the giants haven’t seen him on film that much an this would be a good time to throw it in, and watching a safety tackling him that in it self is good for five yards ……does anybody have anything on James is he able to go ?……….GO 49ER, S

and the endless moronic, makes no sense, ramblings of 11years with no brain continues,,,,

  13. By 49erdefense2012 on Oct 13, 2012 | Reply

I mean, seriously, why does he even waste his time posting anything on here?
oh yeah,I forgot, he thinks he’s a football genius, and that he can run a team better than coach harbaugh and trent balkke, and has a better eye at evaluating talent at the qb position than coach harbaugh,,

  14. By 49erdefense2012 on Oct 13, 2012 | Reply

the only REAL reason I can come up with as to why he posts his filth on here is that whatever team he IS a fan of must suck so bad that he blogs on here just to annoy us cuz he’s a hater,,,he’s obviously NOT a fan of the 49ers so why else would he blog on here?

  15. By abrahamer on Oct 13, 2012 | Reply

11 what i dont get is ur fasination with this term check downs and how exactly does finding the open reciever lead to 3 and outs that makes 0 sense, plz 11 explain that to us could ya ?

  16. By abrahamer on Oct 13, 2012 | Reply

and 49erdog what this isnt a super team ? come on i know ur a die hard niner fan, dont be nervous, i expect a dog fight too but that doesnt mean this will even be close, whatch how we dominate the giants, i know what you mean dont get to high after lopsided wins cuz any team can beat you even the vikings, but we are the NINER NATION,AND ITS OUR TIME NOW !!!

  17. By garygolfer on Oct 14, 2012 | Reply

before 11 can jump in. AS looks terrible, but the offensive line looks worse. can’t be good qb without decent protection.

  18. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 14, 2012 | Reply

lol wow excuses all ready ….figures …alex got eaten up like he was suposed to ….he fell for the giants scheme and failed again …alex only threw deep once and got sacked 4 times and threw what 3 picks almost a forth and yeah he is the man he is average and teams who are willing to gamble and only leave one safety deep those teams kill alex every time

  19. By 49erdefense2012 on Oct 14, 2012 | Reply

11years with no brain take your I told you so’s and shove them up your a$$ you prove my point that your not a fan, this was an entire team let down not jus alex, once again you show the world how much of a fan YOU AREN’T

  20. By 9erdog on Oct 15, 2012 | Reply

this team hurting, we haven’t beaten a team over 500! And the 2 teams we played over 500 dismantled us! Maybe we were reading our press clippings? 2 lopsided wins over weak teams?
J-11 get real, the giants and viks, didn’t stop Alex!
They stopped the 49ers, if you watched either game you’d know that!

  21. By 9erdog on Oct 15, 2012 | Reply

    POOF you A s s h o l e s get it together!

  23. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 15, 2012 | Reply

seahawks are over 500 …can alex do anything there ….

  24. By 11yearswithalex on Oct 15, 2012 | Reply

alex didnot throw deep till 5 min into the third quarter to moss and it was short should have been a TD……and yes randy is showing signs of being so tired of the alex dump off show as is vernon and crabs ….you could see em with their lack luster routes and such after each play they were wide open and alex is dumping off to the 3 yard gain ….watch the other games against the ravens and giants …even vikings …same thing they stifle alex and his dump off close off vernon and alex does the dump off show to a no td game and you blame the whole team …lol and you call yourselves fans

  25. By 9erdog on Oct 15, 2012 | Reply

First and second round picks and Randy Moss, why aren’t we playing them? These were moves to help the offense, rather then these cute plays with Kap, get these guys involved in the game. Teams are drafting QB’s and starting them so why not a WR or RB and come-on Randy is looking good thrown him the ball, and if they (?) don’t have the confidence in him sit him down and start Tolzien

11years with no brain, you are TOTALLY clue-less and have no concept of the game of football, I wont even bother trying to explain anything to you, your a waste a space and your OBVIOUSLY not a fan of this TEAM T,,,E,,,A,,,M,,,
11 guys on defense,,,,11 guys on offense,,,bad blocking, bad decision making, and bad in game adjustments can kill even the best of teams,,this concept alludes you beacuse you are an idiot

  27. By 9erdog on Oct 15, 2012 | Reply

J-11 true he’s a dummy! But why in the h e l l are we playing so poorly against good teams? Are these teams showing us as paper Tigers, no reason for this to be happing, Unless like some talking heads have said that we are a one year wonder.
I don’y buy into that myself, but the honeymoon is over for our coaches everybody is lying in wait for us. And we’d better get it together real quick, because if we don’t we’re in it deep.
J-11 could the defense have given NY’s qb anymore time, you really don’t see any of these game do you. Poor showing all the way around and if it doesn’t change pretty quick, it will be over, the rest of our games are real tough !
