Alex Smith Up for FedEx Air Award

Posted by Taylor Price on October 9, 2012 – 9:36 AM

With a season-high 303 passing yards and three touchdown passes last week in a 45-3 win against the Buffalo Bills, Alex Smith has been nominated for FedEx’s Week 5 Air Player of the Week award.

Smith joins quarterback nominees Drew Brees and Andrew Luck, who both enjoyed 300-plus yard passing performances for the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, respectively.

The 49ers quarterback currently leads the NFL with a 108.7 quarterback rating and continues to rise his level of play under Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Harbaugh talked about his level of respect for Smith on Monday and said the 49ers quarterback is a better player compared to Harbaugh, a former 15-year NFL veteran signal caller.

I think I’ve said this numerous times. Alex Smith is an awesome QB. He is just beginning to show us why we drafted him 1st over all back in 2005. He was better than A. Rogers, we were not blind back than, he was clearly and easily the better signal caller. He will continue to be better than all the QBs he will face from here on out. The only thing I feel sorry for is that we have a very good backup QB sitting on the bench. I hope he’s smart enough to hang around until A. Smith is done with romping the NFL with 3-4 Super-Bowl trophies to show for it. Kap will take the helm from there on and continue. I hope Harbaugh stays for the long run, he will end up being the best ever Coach in the history of the League.

Agreed ninerfan. I admit I was one of those people questioning is Smith was the guy during the dark days. He has won me over with his dedication to the team. Would love to see this guy develop into the QB he was meant to be and Kap come in and add some spice to the mix where he can take over like Young did for Montanna and keep us goinf strong.

    God Bless the 49ers!
