Morning Tailgate: Sept. 7

Posted by Taylor Price on September 7, 2012 – 10:13 AM

Two days before the San Francisco 49ers start the 2012 regular season in Green Bay, it’s safe to say the coaching staff is still using their preparation time wisely.

Coordinators Greg Roman and Vic Fangio said they’ve been preparing for the Packers since mid-April when the 2012 schedule was released. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shares the ways in which the Packers have been on the coordinator’s minds for some time.

“When the 49ers reported for training camp in late-July,” Maiocco wrote, “the focus was on installing the entire defensive package. But late in the exhibition season, the 49ers spent more time zeroing in on the Packers.”

Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News examines the 49ers approach to the mystique of playing at Lambeau Field. Inman: “NFC supremacy will be in the air, especially after the New York Giants lost their debut Wednesday night as reigning Super Bowl champions. The Packers and 49ers were the NFC’s top two seeds in last season’s playoffs before each lost at home to the Giants.”

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee forecasts the weather in Green Bay and the 49ers return options with Ted Ginn Jr. sidelined from practice this week.

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle previews Justin Smith’s matchup against Packers left tackle Marshall Newhouse.

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com picks 49ers-Packers as his top game of Week 1. Schefter: “One of the league’s top defenses squares off against one of the league’s top offenses in a matchup that could be an NFC Championship Game preview.”

Jeff Deeney of ProFootballFocus.com breaks down three keys to Sunday’s 49ers game. Deeney on the Aaron Rodgers-49ers pass defense matchup: “Its strength versus strength as the league’s best quarterback faces arguably the best defense in football. Rodgers racked up 45 touchdown passes in 2011 against only six interceptions.”

Mike Spofford of Packers.com shares comments from Green Baty offensive linemen who will  have tough test of facing Justin Smith this weekend.

49ers.com’s Week 1 coverage included a blog on Donte Whitner wanting to create more turnovers, a story on the coordinators’ Week 1 outlook and a Weekly Conversation with Roman.

    rodgers 45 touchdowns 6 interceptions
    alex 17 touchdowns 5 interceptions
does the 1 fewer interception=the 28 less touchdowns?

joe montana never threw for 45 td’s in a season, and in 1984 was mathced up against a qb that threw for way more yards and tds durring the season in the superbowl, and that game wasnt even close, ask coach rathman i think he played in that game, anyway may the better team prevail,BEAT THE PACK BEAT THE PACK,BEAT THE PACK, i’ll be wearing # 11 alex smith , get used to saying that name, he’s coming out again,TOUCHDOWN ALEX SMITH TOO >>>>> ?

and did anybody see that i will not be denied move at the goal line by delanie walker, wow that kinda reminded me of our other great te vernon davis, when he leaped over a defender to score last year, we’ve got the best 2 te’s in the league, they are fun to watch, and very dangerous men go get em niners, sssssss, sick em, “let the dogs out” ATTACK THE PACK, go get em men leave nothing behind and WE WILL PREVAIL,THIS IS OUR TIME, NINERS TIME!!!

for the sake of the team i hope alex can at least do above average …so the defense can get some rest ….he put the defense out there for 3 quarters every game because alex couldnt keep drives going ….hope he doesnt do that against any of these teams this year if he expects the defense to bail him out again he better give em some rest

and lets unleash the “left side vs right side” on them and see which side of our defense comes up with more plays, against the “top offense in the league”, i dont think they are gonna like being hit by our defenders, who would you rather be hit by ray mc or justin smith?, patrick willis or bowman ? goldson or whitner ? ouch,we got something for your spread offense, its called the shotgun forty niner defense and u will know when its pointed at you !!! dont come out sunday if ur not ready to be hit hard, youve been warned, NINERS TIME SUNDAY IN GREENBAY, WE WILL WIN !!

Let me start off by saying I beleave in Alex. but he needs to put up better numbers this year then he did last year. I am not saying he needs to put up 5000 yards 40 tds. What does everyone else think he needs to do to be the qb to lead the off?

  15. By ace on Sep 7, 2012 | Reply

sunday when we presssure him with 4 and drop as many as we like into coverage, he will look very average, welcome back to earth mr rodgers, its NINERS TIME !!!

There you go Jeromy and Eleven Years B.U.T.T Buddies neither which ever have any real useful info but all they really can do is try bashing Alex Smith. You are not convincing anyone on here so why not just keep you trash to yourself and give Alex at least a half season to prove you completly wrong. You can come back week 7 and post what you think then. I live 30 min from Lambeau field and can’t wait to watch my beloved Niners whoop my family’s Packers this Sunday! This will be a tough game and A Rod is the best in the business but I have faith and believe my Niners will come out on top 27-17

@ micah, 11 and jeromy is just 1 person, just to let u know, his just playing w/ us, thats why u can see those thumb up vote on there post , thats there doing and its nice to know there’s a niner fan up in the state of wisconsin…& ur absolutely right “WE WILL WIN!!!!!!

  20. By NinerFanFrmTonga on Sep 7, 2012 | Reply

The Niners are going to be just awesome this coming Sunday, after that, if the Packerheads want to meet us in the NFC Championship Game, they better win their division first and they have about four months to prepare for us…good luck.

The time has come for Alex to prove all of his supporters RIGHT! He has all the pieces, everything that he’s needed is all in place now, a coaches staff that is seconded to none. And most importantly a (Game`plan!) Protection should be much better, this is their third year together ,,.,, it takes time!
Myself as a Niner Faithful`er I couldn’t be happier for Alex Smith, as its been said by me as well as others Alex has taken his licks and NEVER pointed a finger, he’s done all thats ever been asked of him, He could have b!tched, he could have pointed fingers, he certainly earned that right. But he didn’t he just maned up and did whatever our team asked of him!
    Good Luck Alex …. give`em H#LL!

Jeromy. Your emotional girly temper tandrums are tired. Just root for Alex and the entire team to win and STFU!

  23. By Ladybug on Sep 7, 2012 | Reply

WHOA..did you read that Michael Silver…Yahoo’s Football ‘expert” says that the Seahawks will win the West division this year….and he names a whole slew of players who will be outstanding…and he says Payton will help Denver win their division this year…but wont really be at top speed until next year.

Meanwhile…nary a word about the 49ers…nada… Are we flying under the radar again???????

  24. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Sep 7, 2012 | Reply

as long as alex is QB there is no way anyone predicts niners for anything …only thing they do talk about is the defense …..remember alex was not wanted by any team even the niners he had no choice but to sign and we are stuck again …..payton and alex had same agent no way even if payton was leaning towards the niners the agent would have lost alex as a client because he would be bagging groceries this season if peyton came here

dave, your comments are extremely weak, ask your kids for some fresh ideas, noone here cares what you think, or what you command, so you start to treat Alex like what he is(A BUST) or you STFU!! kook

Jeromy and 11 I can till you both dont like Alex witch is fine that is your choice but what kind of stats will he have to come up with for you to change your mind?

  29. By SukitAShaterz on Sep 7, 2012 | Reply

@Jake, It’s got to be something besides 13-3, that is NEVER good enough! AS top 5 quarterback in this league. Stat wise he looks average but so did Mr Montana. It takes a TEAM to win in this league, and look what happened when he had one last year. All I see is how Alex loses the games. WRONG! He does what he needs to to win them. FACT!

I know its not a typo because you have done it everytime. It’s “NO ONE” not “NOONE”. I am surrounded by idiots who think they smart. And by that I mean Eleven & Jeromy. You even started using STFU back to me??? You really have nothing original and you using lame on me now? Uhhhhm….do you see the irony? Oh wait you too stupid to see or even understand the word! HA!

Michael Silver???…Yahoo’s Football ‘expert”???? What gives him “expert” credentials. The guy looks like the closest he has ever been to even playing football was reading his Madden 2012 manual. Seriously? He is just a guy who has an opinion. HE IS JUST A GUY WHO GETS PAID for his blogs and we don’t…Thats the only difference. Why would anyone put much weight in his opinion?

  36. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Sep 8, 2012 | Reply

man oh man do you watch the games as alex throws the check down as the other receivers are open down field and beating their guy and doing their job ….he has so many flaws and is dragging the niners down the other niners with a real QB to run the offense would have been fitting their rings all ready

  37. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Sep 8, 2012 | Reply

by the way niners by 6 …because they have a probowl kicker

  38. By Basil on Sep 8, 2012 | Reply

Time for our Niners to put some pain their egos, this game is very important it could determine home field advantage throughout the playoffs, I don’t thing anybody wants to travel to the ice place, having to say we have something to prove. F#ck no I rather they come out here saying that ‘THEY’ have something to prove! Anyhow good luck guys ……………..

J-11 who are (they?) do you mean us? thats odd most fans would say Us or WE are you sure that you are a 9ers fan, cuse I don’t think so ! Oh yeah the Turk was looking for ya, so get your playbook dude

  40. By rjdniner on Sep 9, 2012 | Reply

Basil. One game will not decide what happens in the playoffs. We make the playoff first and if we lose to the packers. I guess they’ll be a lot crying and finger pointing going on.

  41. By Basil on Sep 9, 2012 | Reply

” this game is very important it could determine home field advantage throughout the playoffs,” this is true !
Finger pointing (?) well J-11 gonna do that anyway. Other`then that, there comes a time when a team needs to step up and take of business, and the business at hand is the pack!

  42. By dave g. on Sep 9, 2012 | Reply

Yeah Eleven, recievers were getting all kinds of open last year? Thats why they decided to get other recievers and not changing the QB. So you saying our coaches are that stupid????

  43. By Basil on Sep 9, 2012 | Reply

WE NEED TO BEAT THE PACKERS TODAY! We do not want to back to lambeau and play these SOB’s again, We so not want to do that ………….. enough said about that!

from now on its one game, one play at a time!

  44. By Basil on Sep 9, 2012 | Reply

dave: he has no idea what he’s talking about, the whole game plan last year was ,, play with in the system! Don’t turn the ball over, count on our defense, and our special teams to keep us in the game. When you have the Offense we had last year, you can’t make mistake’s, you need to play close to the vest? But J-11 will never understand ……… crack will do that, eh???

  45. By rjdniner on Sep 9, 2012 | Reply

It, s way to early to foresee what’s going to happen with just one game , even though we’ve been picked to win our division, to much can still happen .I will really have a party when we win our division .
