Morning Tailgate: Aug. 24

Posted by Taylor Price on August 24, 2012 – 9:38 AM

The 49ers players have the day off, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be heard from this Friday on 49ers.com.

Our latest Niner Talk podcast features an interview with starting cornerback Tarell Brown who discussed the team’s Sunday preseason contest against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. Brown said the first-team defense is excited for the challenge and as always, looking to hit everything moving.

The interview also covered Brown’s road trip necessities which included Welch’s fruit snacks and a round neck pillow for long cross-country naps. Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, a writer frequently linked in the Morning Tailgate, also joined the latest podcast to discuss 49ers storylines heading into Week 3 of the preseason and the frontrunners for his yearly “Iron Bee” award.

Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com looks at the quarterback matchup between the 49ers and Broncos. Marvez: “The 49ers know for certain that they still field one of the NFL’s most mentally tough quarterbacks coming off his best season. They also believe the 28-year-old (Alex) Smith may have even more upside in 2012 thanks to an improved supporting cast.”

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com noted that NaVorro Bowman and Chris Culliver sat out of Thursday’s practice.

Kevin Lynch of SFGate.com shares practice notes from Thursday, including Jim Harbaugh’s comments on Brandon Jacobs doing enough this offseason to make the 53-man roster.

Lynch also shares details of Bowman asking Patrick Willis to be the godfather on his newborn twins.

Barrows, our podcast guest, shares the details of undrafted 49ers defensive tackle Tony Jerod-Eddie’s close relationship with Broncos pass-rusher Von Miller. Barrows: “When Miller was in high school, his family took in three other players on the DeSoto (Tx) High football team, including 49ers defensive lineman Tony Jerod-Eddie. “It was like a sleepover every day,” Miller said by phone Thursday.”

Jeff Deeney of ProFootballFocus.com analyzes the 49ers heading into 2012 as part of the site’s 32 Teams in 32 Days series. Deeney: “While the 49ers are a better, and much deeper team on paper in 2012, it’s hard to see them duplicating the 13 wins they put up in 2011 as a much tougher schedule awaits. That being said, this team is still the consensus pick to come out of the NFC West, and even if they only win 10 games, they should be in just as good of a position to try and make a deep run in the playoffs in 2012.”

Alex Espinoza of 49ers.com detailed the visit of the Panther Racing team to 49ers headquarters.

Teaser: you can read more on Dixon and the 49ers special teams units later today on 49ers.com.

Denver ……should be a good one would love to see the defense get some picks and or sacks …..the running game has been good …like to see more ….which is the only 2 things that look to impress ……alex will dump off and hand off …same old alex and the punter will get some work ………well actually i hope we blow em out and look good doing it …..ya know dignified and all ………

  2. By Basil on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

Alex will do as Roman wants him to do, and I doubt that we’ll show anything that any another team we play will find helpful?
Right about halfway through last season I quit second guessing theses guys, unlike our past 2 so called head coaches these coaches know what their doing … they know exactly what their doing!

  3. By ace on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

11 what planet are you from URANUS ? you couldnt be more wrong as usual, denver doesnt want to see manning hurt in a preseason game , would you,you would probably play ur starters in preseason like the raiders do to try and win preseason games…rofl stupid raiders fan

  4. By johninchina on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

Pretty good observations Basil, but did you watch Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers yessterday? You can see how smart Rodgers is and what his tactic is to avoid the rush and buy himself time to look over the field and then take off running once the defensive end or linebacker commits himself, Rodgers just runs around him . . . they tipped their hand and give us good ideas for defensive scheme . . . yes, we do have the best coashing staff in the NFL, hands down! Forty-niners rule . . .Sept 9 baby, Sept 9th!

  5. By ace on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

yes lets just say it, coach harbaugh is genious, there is so much more going on that we cant see, until it happens, he is amazing at taloring his play book to take advantage of each players strenghs, really what more could we ask for, some guy barking at his qb in front of everybody ? no !!!

  6. By ace on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

im sorry i should say these coach’s are all amazing cuz they are GO NINERS !!!

  7. By bow9ers53 on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

the 49ers does’nt have to prove anything these pre-season games, we know already what are they capable off. all they have to do is get out of these prelimanry games healthy and get ready for the real thing…& for the record @ace 11 is from the planet of the apes, kinda like his raiderettes…..

  8. By ace on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

and when the season starts like in green bay, qb’s “buying time” against this defense is usually a bad thing leading to one of two things happening , you get hit really hard and lose the ball, or we just take it from you, 38 takeaways omg who can top that ? FORTY NINERS ALL THE WAY !!!

  9. By ace on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

most exciting play’s from last year, for me defensivly against philly justin smith catches up to a reciever and strips him from behind to basiclly end the game ,offensive alex smith hits vernon davis for touchdown to beat the saints, probowl plays by probowl players, cant ask for much more than that,am i wrong ?

  10. By eleven years without a life on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

You just came outta left field with that one ACE. Random thoughts? I agree with ya though. Go Niners!

  11. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

ummm yeah alex …NOT …A probowler….but who knows maybe against a harder schedule and teams watching his last year feats ….alex will go above and beyond and do more than check down when players are open in the zones and alex refuses to throw ….go niners carry alex this year as well

  12. By 49er faithful on Aug 24, 2012 | Reply

I;m no big fan of alex smith but huge niners fan and big harbaugh fan if we work on offense which we have and special teams which cost us last year vs giants we gonna go deep we already in playoffs with our division so we could hold back some thing lol go niners baby and new stadiun coming weeeeeeeeeeee

The rumor mill has the 49ers only keeping 3 QB’s. If that is the case I hope they keep Tolzien as their #3 QB, because I see him as their future.. No QB on the team has his accuracy, his cool presence under pressure or his drive to be the best. Plus he wore #16 in college. Nuff said.

  15. By hackphx on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Suggestion: Buying time is ALWAYS a good thing especially for Rogers. CB’s & Goldson need to stay glued so Smiths can dominate. 11: I’m going to enjoy your learning curve about QB’s and Coaches

  16. By dave g. on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

Its amazing the short sightedness of amateurs like Eleven who is filled with pure hatred of one guy. Since 2002 when Steve Mariucci got fired (huge mistake!), my beloved SF49ERS have sucked all the way up until Jim Harbaugh became head coach last year. From Dennis Erickson to Mike Nolan to Mike Singletary & GMs Terry Donahue, Scot McCloughan were terrible with an extremely pathetic lineup of WR’s and a revolving door of a different offensive coordinators each year with names like Mike Johnson & Jimmy Rae BUT reality does not matter. We only have one name to blame & that is the Alex Smith??? Thats what you call a complete idiot to blame the past 11 years on Alex Smith who was not even drafted until 2005 and came to the worst team in the NFL that year. Yeah that makes sense! What a complete dumb@ss!

  17. By jeromy on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

dave, the reason Alex gets blamed is that the rest of the team is going way above & beyond “average” and he is still trying to reach “average”

  18. By dave g. on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

The only people who blame Alex for everything is the people who are below average in intellect. Thank you for proving my point perfectly!

  19. By dave g. on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

I knew I can always count on Jeromy to plant his face in the perfect spot to be slapped every time. Its like a perfect lob in softball & hitting that homerun. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Jeromy is a poster child for ultimate loser!

  20. By dave g. on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

And it is nice to finally have above “average” wide recievers for once which an above “average” head coach identified as being a priority in the offseason to help his above “average” team finally reach greatness. But Jeromy you cannot possible comprehend what greatness is because you are the ultimate loser! Oh by the way, if you taking notes that means you waaaaaaay below “average”. HAHA!

And now that I am done slapping the ultimate dumb B!tch on these blogs, I am off to enjoy the rest of my weekend. Sayonara B!tches!

Hey Eleven Years and Jermey you both really are special…. Neither of you have any sense or any knowledge of the game of football. Both of you seem to have a strong vendetta against our QB and Im really sick of it. All you do is try and bash Alex and for what? The fact that every year hes had to learn a new system, the fact he has had numerous head coaches, the fact that hes had to listen to idiots like you his entire career, the fact that he has done everything he has been asked to do, the fact he won numerous games for us last season, the fact that everyone in the Niner Nation including all his teammates all his coaches the entire front office. No Eleven Years and Jeremy know better than everyone else lol. Wow I can’t wait till Alex tears it up this season and than hear what you 2 idiots have to say then. Go Niners and Go Alex!!!

  23. By Basil on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

soooo J-11! all last year we had to listen to you and your Alex bashing, ands all this preseason as well. And I sure that no matter how well we do as a team, you’ll find something to bash Alex about. Why don’t you give us a break and move on? Theres nothing else you can say that we haven’t heard from you .. maybe 3 & 4? times before, you’re all hung up on Stats, and most of us here are more concern with the win and loss column. Silly us, we think those numbers will get us into the Super Bow!
So please give us a break and move on, its okay that you don’t care for or like Alex Smith but as a fan of the Niners you really should support him and all other players. Like I posted before I really didn’t like Chilo Rachal and wanted him off the team, but if he’s was going to play? then I wanted him to do well.
Alex is a good Man and will prove to be an excellent QB, and if I’m wrong I will apologize to you on the blog, it Caps. But in return I only ask you to hang uo the bashing till the end of the season, thats the only way we judge his body of work ,,,, deal?

baaaaaahaaaaahaaaaaa, its not thats its so funny, its just that you put soooo much effort into it(cuz you are trying to defend the Bust) for me its easy, just speak the truth, but boy does that ever make you kooks mad

  28. By jeromy on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

on the other hand, I choose to look at the weaknesses we have(Alex) because until he is fixed or replaced it doesnt matter how good special teams or the defense is he will stop us from winning(ex. last season playoffs)

  29. By jeromy on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

both different ways, & im sure there are many others, its nice to know that you get to decide who the “TRUE” fans are

nobody is making excuses for alex smith we dont have too, we know we have a quality starting qb, who made very smart decisions with the football, kinda like another smart qb ask joe, smart qb’s win superbowls, with the help of a strong defense and good running game we gonna do this , go niners !!!

  35. By ace on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

does anyone recall a quarterback single handly carring his team to the superbowl and winning, um no never gonna happen, ask john elway ? joe montana my alltime fav qb did he carry us to the superbowl by himself ,nope, did he even throw deep, not really, he made smart plays with the ball and we win,so alex smith keep doing the smart thing =we win nuff said

  36. By ace on Aug 25, 2012 | Reply

so take ur elite qb mold and throw it away, cuz smart qb’s win more games, and if manning were smart he’d retire after 4 neck surgeries, and leaving ur team, all bad buddy you and our friend “11″ here should hang out, cuz ur both going down hill at this point, sorry, go niners !!!

And Jeromy our offensive coordinators and head coaches have been consistant all that time compared to the Pack? Huh? You choose to ignore facts and reality and are wrapped up in this obsession of hatred for our starting QB. You are an emotional biased idiot and have always been. There is no logic to your statements.

Jeromy, so the fumbles by Kyle Williams played no part & depleted WR’s? No part at all…it was 100% Alex? Dude, that proves you illogical arguments….its completely emotional. You like a woman with your emotional drama. No offense ladies but most guys are not guided by emotional drama. Jeromy you must be filled with excess estrogen! Eat some chocolate and meet a nice guy. That may help you Jeromy.

preseason no kidding? are you talking about what I posted about the seagulls 101 points in the 3 preseason games?
Let not forget that preseason is also showcase for your talent, point in case the gulls seem to have some things to show. Anytime you can put points like that other teams have to notice
Just like Denver here, its only preseason but you know the raiders are watching? Stats, Wins, Losses, none of those things count. Just like the onside kick doesn’t mean a thing, but other teams now have to beware of that, right? GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS

and preseason or not they can’t let Alex take anymore of those hits!

  61. By Basil on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

well this is pretty ,,,,,,,,, preseason is the time to get this stuff right, right? yeah I know preseason and all that but this sucks!

  62. By SHIP on Aug 26, 2012 | Reply

We were 5-0 in preseason for SING his last year and had terrible preseason records under Walsh. Factor in Harbaugh is a very intellegent guy who does not want to show anything for the Packers. Use your brain and use past history to tell you that preseason means diddly. Some teams really want to win preseason and others are more concerned with experimenting and evaluating. Other teams are going to take notice of 101 points in preseason? Basil are you for real? You sound like a little kid.
