Morning Tailgate: Aug. 22

Posted by Taylor Price on August 22, 2012 – 10:01 AM

Alex Smith has impressed local reporters all training camp long with his steady development. In his second season running Greg Roman’s offensive attack, Smith has looked like an “expert” in the system according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Count Clark Judge as another believer of Smith’s ability to improve in 2012. The CBS Sports football writer recently visited 49ers practices and came away with that distinct impression.

“You can see it in practice when Smith runs the first-team offense,” Clark wrote, “and you can hear it from teammates who believe, as I do, that this is the season Smith shakes his critics.”

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shares defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s comments on the team needing backup safeties to emerge. Maiocco: “Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is still waiting for a safety not named Donte Whitner or Dashon Goldson to earn his confidence in the final two exhibition games.”

Maiocco also notes the return of LaMichael James at Tuesday’s practice.

Steve Corkan of The Bay Area News Group shares insight on Randy Moss’ swimming habit spreading in the 49ers locker room, even to rookies like Chris Owusu. Corkan: “Owusu said his time in a swimming pool before Moss arrived was limited to rehab sessions. These days, Owusu is learning the benefits of swimming laps, holding his breath and working multiple muscles at one time. Owusu said the swimming has helped increase his endurance and lung capacity, while providing another outlet for him to bond with his new teammates.”

49ers.com profiled Demarcus Dobbs’ three roles, Larry Grant increasing competition amongst the team’s linebackers and Ricky Jean Francois’ weight room competitions with the 49ers defensive linemen.

Can’t wait for the Packers.Bottom line is that we will know by game one, what Harbaugh is going to let Alex do.
And if we’re not Airin the ball out against Rodgers, then we have a problem. But my gut tells me we are in for an Offensive explosion this year. HERE WE GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!

i honestly believe that alex is gonna shine this season, as long as everybody is healthy come game 1 in the regular season, i have a gut feeling we will win at green bay, to me roster is deep, and the coaching staff know how to use ‘em, so, “LETS GO NINERS!!!!!!!

lol but alex practices the best so i hear ….lol ……wonder what excuses the alex suporters are going come up with this year …….

  6. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

alex showed last year with all his weapons last year …early in season he won’t or rather can’t throw down field unless the guy is wide open …..he cant read a zone coverage …..and refuses to get rid of the ball when even the guy selling pizza in the stands knows the blitz is coming ……the league knows alex and laughs at us for keeping him …they have his ticket and they are going to punch it …..wich blows for the niners …i am hopeing the defense will bail him out again ..along with pro bowl kicker and punter …….

  7. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

we had best chance last year with easy schedule and nothing ….well chilo was horrible and gave up plenty of sacks …but alex would have just checked down for 3 and out anyways …so same result …..a punt ….or if gore ripped of a good run he was rewarded with alex setting up a field goal ….sad realy….alex better pring his practice cleats to the next game and try as he will …he can never do…..to make a good showing and send something to the yorks for all the millions he has taken from them for nothing but 7 years and then some of rebuilding and rebuilding and rebuilding so alex can try and have a good game ….the tampa game was good wonder if they were in man defense all game

  8. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

at least alex will get to see a real QB on the field in denver ….maybe he can pick up a few things

for ur information 11 , if it was’t for the idiot k. williams, alex is holding the lombardi trophy by now,w/ last years line-up….

  10. By bow9er53 on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

o.k.let me rephrase that , if it wasn’t for that misque of kyle williams, alex is holding that lombardi trophy by now, w/ last years line up, for ur information 11…

  11. By dave g. on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

Once again Eleven, it is “which”, not “wich”. How you gonna read a zone coverage, when you can’t even read “Jack & Jill”? Just saying…

  12. By dave g. on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

Eleven, maybe you should go to a kindergarten spelling bee….maybe you can pick up a few things

  13. By bow9ers53 on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

if it was’nt for that kyle williams misques (twice), alex is holding that lombardi trophy by now w/ last years line-up, what more now that they booster roster,it will be a glory year for the niners,”NINERS BABY!!!!!!

say what you want eleven years but we still went 14-4 last season…i dont give a dam if Alex has the same type of season as long as we go to the playoffs and have a chance to play for what really matters…all this talk about having to air it out…that i remember the three teams that aired it out last season got to the playofffs but didnt win jack sh!t…you guys are trippin if you think we have to do anything different than what we did last year…we won games and thats what mattered…a 9-7 team won the super bowl last year quit making the conversation over whether our QB has it in him because he has proven he can get it done…if you have short term memory loss thats on you…or if you closed your eyes while Alex was in the middle of one of the best games in playoff history thats on you to buddy…and im not making excuses unlike you eleven years who after you say no excuses posts countless of comments pointing out all the negatives or making excuses for why Alex is no good…it dont matter how you win or lose a win is a win…no excuses!!!

  16. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

with aldon coming back and the defense having more film to break down so they can get even better …i look for the defense to carry alex through these tough times of …….oh wait he is not a rookie he has 7 years under his belt and millions of dollars and still has to have a coach and coordinator baby him and show him how to play football …rediculous ………

  17. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

lol ummmm both giants games manning threw huge bombs to guys who were covered and still completed em and hmmmm yeah they did win the superbowl doing that same thing to the receiver that ummm is on the niners ……wow i figured non of you people actually watch alex and or other QB’s ….and how far alex is behind is really bad …josh johnson with more reps could take alex’s job mid season …..and kap as soon as he gets comfy with the playbook …….same with tolzein …all of those guys know who they are and what they want to do on the field …..alex has to be told and shown and coddled ……………sad really

“show something other than what we saw all last season” And that was what? a 13 3 season. Not sure that that would bug me, but then J-11 seems to know more then most posters around here, eh?
Myself I don’t put all much into stats durning the season, really don’t think they’re that important ‘durning the season’ point in case NY Giants they finished the season 9 7. And we all know how they wrapped it all up against a team with much better stats! J-11 you don’t think Brady would trade all those stats for a 4th ring, I’m sure his teammates would!
Seasons end only thing that matters is wins and losses, Stats are good for contract talks. anyhow thats how Basil sees it!

  20. By layzie16 on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

ur clue less..you must have been one of those morons that thought Kevin Kolb or Matt Flynn were any good…first one of those bombs was on a rookies coverage (and might i say that Cully had excellent coverage, you cant really do anything about a throw like that ) and the other Eli took advantage of when T Brown went down to go over the top…other wise Eli would have been irrelevant in that game…yea our receivers went 1-13 or something like that but what about our TE…Vernon smashed on the Giants D…use the complete facts or due receptions by a TE not count all of a sudden…quit using your opinions as facts…im pretty sure they are all being taught the same way….geez its pointless to argue with somebody like you

  21. By DMT on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

What do they mean when they refer to Alex “mastery of the offense”? I saw three field goals last week, just like most of last season. When I think mastery of offense, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers come to mind, but what do I know?

  22. By dave g. on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

Show you something other than what you saw last season? What we saw last season was a QB who threw for over 3000 yards, only 5 ints, 5 come from behind game winning drives, a 13-3 regular season and a QB that came from behind with a defense that gave up 32 points in the 1st playoff game. And a QB who threw 2 Tds zero picks with only one starting WR AND we only barely lost in OT in that game BECAUSE a guy other than the QB turning the ball over multiple times? Is that what you talking about dumb@ss?

  23. By Basil on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

Alex vs Brees went the money was on the line who came put on top, eh?

  24. By dave g. on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

And of course now we have the guy who is ready to hang himself, DMT…now we have the 3rd stooge. Hey dumb@ss #3, who were ALL running those drives last week with 3 field goals? Was it all ALEX? It is preseason dumb@ss #3. BTW: Check out Aaron Rodgers stats in preseason game #1. Do you even know the game of football????? Do you know what coaches & teams actually do during preseason?

  25. By dave g. on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

So according to the 3 Stooges, Harbaugh & Baalke are sooooo incredibly incompetent that they felt WRs was the issue and loaded up on that in the offseason unneccesarily because apparently the 3 Stooges are the only ones who thought WRs was not an issue BUT it was all ALEX. Yeah….that makes sense. So according to their logic, Harbaugh should have ignored WR’s because apparently we were fully loaded & Alex did not take advantage of that. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah thats what I would call dumb@sses!

  26. By dave g. on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

Matt Flynn? aka Kevin Kolb. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  28. By PhataLerror on Aug 22, 2012 | Reply

Eleven is getting nervous about how he will defend his opinion concerning Alex Smith… multiple posts not directed at any one thing anyone said… rambling rants… he’s not trying to convince anyone else as much as he’s trying to convince himself that he’s not about to be proved wrong.

It doesn’t matter. Alex will put up 30 TD’s, 4,000 yards, and <10 INT's, and in the end Eleven will say something insensible like, 'A real first overall QB would have been able to do that without the supporting cast and without a good coach,' although no one ever has done that.

well I was going to post a comment to 11 but you guys have covered it well enough. coach harbaugh DOES NOT, I REPEAT, DOES NOT game plan for the pre season,he will show NO ONE, what he plans to do on offense untill its for real,so dont be bothered by what you perceive to be bad offensive play DMT in the pre-season.
I am excited to see if alex has really turned the corner, all the cards are in his favor, I believe he will prove all his nay sayers wrong

just one question,,,,,,, how many punts came frm first team offense this preseason???

    ALERT…ALERT…ALERT…..!!!

Alex Smith (supposedly DRAFT BUST 1st ROUNDER) is
GONNA PROVE A LOT of NON-BELIEVER’s/HATER’s into
    TRUE BELIEVER’s….. BEGINNING with the
    GREEN BAY PACKERS…>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Alex will be just fine. This is his 1st year with the same offense in 11 years. So bring on Breese and the low life bounty boys again.

  33. By John on Aug 23, 2012 | Reply

Last years NFC championship game was a lot about the official blowing the play dead when clearly it was a fumble. We would of had the ball at the 15 yard line. The Giants would of needed to score twice with 5 minutes remaining.

  34. By #1 D-FENSE 2012 on Aug 23, 2012 | Reply

@ john, thank you sir, FINALLY,someone else who remembers the ref’s blunder as I do, if the zebra’s call that play right, we score and go to the super bowl, so when I hear guys like justin tuck or ahmhad bradshaw say they won the game fair and square it makes me wanna strangle them,,,,FAIR AND SQUARE???? the ref’s blunder handed them the game, of course you can say how do I know that we would have scored, but I was at the game and saw first hand how the giants defense was getting tired and that was the drive to win the game, but it was not to be,,,GGRRRR!!!!! I HATE REFS!!!!!BRING ON 2012!!!

if it wasn’t for the kyle williams misques (twice) alex is holding that lombardi trophy by now,w/ the last years line-up, what now the franchise booster the roster,it will be a break away for a. smith this year…

1def I have to jump in on the side of the refs there have been calls in the history of this great game of our that have gone both ways one comes to me, we were playing the giants in the playoffs someone grabbed the jersey of the defensive player, they didn’t call it as holding and I was happy they didn’t, Garcia was the QB, s for that game and we won it, do you remember that game am sure you were there. ?

  37. By Basil on Aug 23, 2012 | Reply

Bad Ref’ ,,,,, well last year is over and we can’t change anything, but it could be worse this year what with replacement
officials? NFL working on the cheap ……. ?

  38. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 23, 2012 | Reply

omg garcia …another waste of niner time …..all these want to be QB’s that the niners have been stuck with because they dont want to pony up for a QB and when they do they get alex …..7 years later trying his best to understand the game he has been playing since highschool……….lol

When you have a 6 man crew each person is responsible for a section of the field . People need to understand how much work and study go’s into being a football referee. And yes I want to see the regular referee’s out there .

  41. By rjdniner on Aug 23, 2012 | Reply

He could not even leave that alone.

Football is deferent from any other sport, Football is sudden death, one bad call and your going home.
The NFL should field the best they can find, and pay them according. I understand mistakes will be made, but there doesn’t seem to be any consistency, even with instant replay, sometimes you have to wonder what are they looking at? How many times have I said this? this will be over ruled, or this will be up held, the people in the booth “I’m shocked”
Again mistakes will be make, but I hate to see my season go down the tubs on bad call! just Basil’s MHO
