Morning Tailgate: Aug. 20

Posted by Taylor Price on August 20, 2012 – 10:42 AM

The reviews are in. The 49ers have finished a second preseason game, a 20-9 defeat to the Houston Texans, and there’s been plenty of time to break down the action ever since thanks to NFL’s Preseason Live.

The 49ers had bright spots in defeat, but there’s always room for improvement. In reality, the best thing for the players is having more game tape to dissect and utilize as they prepare for the regular season.

In the same way coaches and players detail their every move on the football field, several Bay Area football writers have broken down the game tape with an eye on who stood out Saturday night against the Texans.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com analyzes the offensive and defensive performances from Saturday night.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee also offers an in-depth look at the team’s second preseason contest.

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle shares Brandon Jacobs’ recent Twitter reaction after his Sunday MRI results.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com cites a source who claims Jacobs’ MRI revealed “no major damage.”

49ers.com’s gave coverage included a game recap story, a notebook of game observations, a look at the first-team defense’s consistent ways, a video recap of the game and a Cover 2 breakdown of the 49ers-Texans matchup.

Jacobs appreciates the support from the 49ers Faithful.

I wonder just what ” no major damage”, really means,, we can only hope that its a 3-4 week layoff for the big guy and nothing more

practice talk is just that practice …..in both games so far niners seem to be a little off …..the offense cant seem to get anything going and the defense is at last years pace bend dont break….. i hope that it all works out for the good …..but watching the last 2 games …and they are games ..they suit up and play to win i hope ……still i am wanting more from the offense ….

the alex situation looks like the same as the past years …good in practice …yet lacking somthing in games ….the season will tell us for sure but from the looks of it the niners need some gut checks and well alex still looks flat and misguided out there like he has no idea what to do when things dont go as planned ……sad really

    Eleven years:
When all the starters were in for both teams(and we never had all our starters playing),the score was 3-3 . After we put in some 2nd and 3rd stringers and the Texans kept their starting units in,that is when the Texans started scoring.
But I agree about Alex. But it is early in Preseason,so give him a chance to show if he can be better in the regular season.

11,your ramblings about alex are old and tired, why dont you try talking about someone else on the team,or is alex the only player you know how to talk about? sounds suspiously like A NON 49ER FAN TO ME,,,just saying, you NEVER talk about anyone OTHER than alex,,

Everyone don’t forget that last year we looked horrible in the pre-season. Every major sports news program or magazine had us as the worst team in the league and right on pace to get the #1 pick in the draft. Remember everyone was asking if John Harbaugh was gonna tank it for Luck? and Boom 13-3 and the NFC championship game. Don’t lt the pre-season hype get to you. Just trust in THE HARBAUGH.

hope jacob is gonna be alright, defense still solid so far….

All the starters for the teams this preseason all have been playing the whole first half… so they are able to get a rhythm going… Alex was 4/9 started 4/4 he only have 9 attempts people… everyone else whose been starting has averaged about 15-20 even drew brees… aaron rodgers… Eli manning played almost the whole first half… we can paint a more accurate picture in week 3 of the preseason when our starters get more reps… Jus wait and watch folks… Juggernaut in the waiting

and yes alex is the QB and yes my opinion is he is not right for us ..that is all not saying a anyone is wrong i am giving my opinion as to why we are not winning a superbowl …..to say that we all have to root for a guy because he wears our uniform even though we think he is not good enough to wear it …is the opinion and that is all …i watch the games and see for myself that he is just a dude trying to be a QB in the NFL and no for the niners i woulod like a real QB …that is my opinion

  15. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 20, 2012 | Reply

As for Alex Smith, how about we look at the Kid at the end of the year, after he as had the same coach, offense and co-ordinator for two years in a row. I was down on the kid last year to but really none of us fans know how hard it must be to have learned a new system every year for 7 years in a row and never have coach that beleaved in you. He proved everyone of us doubters wrong last year and I think it is time all of us tru 9ers fans give our guy the benefit of the doubt for once.

It has been said….and I repeat it….Houston played their starters for the first half, people…JH rotated his players to see how the new-bee reacted to tough situations, and who might be a break-out player….worthy of keeping on the team.

These games are just the “shakedown” cruise…don’t forget that. AND last year we lost 2 preseason games ( to the Saints and to the Texans). JH seems to like to see who will step up….and he does NOT want to risk injuries.

if c.k. can’t wait then leave, i rather have scott t. as the back-up, c.k. is only good at pistol offense which i believe will never work in the nfl, on the other hand scott t.plays smart than c. k….so, if he leaves , then be it……

Kap had a game-face on. Alex was having a good time. Would like to see game faces on ALL of the guys from this time forward

  24. By rjdniner on Aug 20, 2012 | Reply

I was really impressed with the way Tolzin handle himself during his short time in the game and you would have thought that Kap could have gotten away from that system while as a back up under Jim.

Everyone get off Alex! geez, he played better than Shaub did against our D. Their D ranked higher than ours last year. in reg season we kick the fg instead of going for it. so when the starters were in on both teams we were winning 6-3. Shaub put up his numbers against our 2nd team late in the 2nd qt. You would all love to have Matt Shaub, yet Alex plays slightly better against just as good of a defense and you are all talking trash. He torched the Vikings and will torch every non top 10 Defense this year, you’ll see. of course the top D’s will give him a hard time. They give everyone a hard time. just shut up already about Alex (clutch) Smith. Guy is clutch and I can’t think of anyone else I would rather have as our QB. he can run, he’s still very young, and his reads and arm are getting better and stronger every year.

Why are people “ELEVEN” making a big deal of preseason? We were 5-0 in Singletarys last year in preseason. We had some terrible preseason records in Bill Walsh’s years. Has no one been paying attention? And thats “no one” not “noon” dumb@ss. And by the way your SugarBuns Jeromy is the one who uses the lame “your mama” jokes. Can your delicate ears handle that you fake “I am more dignified” than the rest of you dork? Dignified people can spell simple words and don’t try to tell me it was a typo because you mis spell the same words repeatly. Guess what: football players and coaches swear all the time. If you can’t handle it don’t watch football Mr. Dignified!

and how the fish jump at the food ….thank you …thank you …my point was made …as for alex how many more years will we wait for him to even look halfwaqy good ….the current niners are not going to be together next season so now would be the time to push on for a ring ….alex …lol clutch…that is a good one …if he was he would have ran down the field and beat the giants …..instead he threw the ball in the dirt 3 straight times ……..love em if you like …you will just have to come up with new excuses for him ………here is one ……….he can not play in the NFL….that one is for free …..go niners and carry alex again for this year so you might be able to get a ring besdies the fact that alex holds you back

  29. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 20, 2012 | Reply

oh sorry i forgot to mention alex is definatly dignified …..so much so …..so much so

  30. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Aug 20, 2012 | Reply

oh and my point was that you can not even make your point without useing swear words wich ….hhmmmm yeah i guess that makes you dignified ………keep it to niner chat …like how the running game may save alex this season …..and yes i will be watching the firt game this season as alex takes the helm and will be waiting for the excuses as to why he cant throw down field

I was at the game and some knucklehead Texan fans were talking smack when they were up 10-6. I’m like be for real our starters went out at the start of the 2nd quarter and they still only scored 1 td before half, nuff said!

we want to win ever games preseason or not, But the coaches are looking for something deferent, they may run a play that we think’s a bust, but their looking at something else! Maybe its how the right guard pulls, or how the center reacts to a rusher?
I understand most here know this, but for the few (J-11) that don’t, just I’d throw it out there! These guys are fighting for one of the few openings, all the while trying not to get hurt, good luck guys …… !
