Morning Tailgate: Aug. 4

Posted by Taylor Price on August 4, 2012 – 11:10 AM

The on-going labor dispute between NFL officials and the league continues into the preseason with Sunday’s preseason Hall of Fame game between the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals featuring replacement officials.

Such officials have been out to 49ers training camp sessions and have received positive feedback from coach Jim Harbaugh.

“I haven’t seen the film from today’s practice but after yesterday’s practice it was very good,” Harbaugh said, per CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco. “They saw everything I was able to see and more. Today, they were right on it. I think they had another good day today.”

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Maiocco also passes along Harbaugh’s comments on Michael Crabtree’s health. “I don’t think this is going to be a major bump in the road. I think it’ll be a minor one. He’s chomping at the bit to get back out there and I anticipate that happening soon,” Harbaugh said.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee took note of the latest player to miss practice time in practice notes. Barrows: “Linebacker NaVorro Bowman and Kyle Williams went through full practices after getting nicked Thursday. Tight end Nate Byham, who is coming back from an ACL injury “is working through something” and did not practice. Byham’s injury is not serious and he should practice Saturday.”

Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News offers this classic observation from a Dashon Goldson interception to end practice. Inman: “Defensive play of the day: Goldson’s practice-ending interception. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone, not even Deion, start high-stepping toward the end zone before they even make the interception. Goldson did so in mid-air as he went up for the tipped pass.”

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle says concerns over Justin Smith missing Friday’s practice were premature. Branch: “There was some question about whether defensive tackle Justin Smith had an injury when he sat out Thursday’s practice while sporting a sleeve on his right knee. Nope. Smith is just fine — after his veteran’s day off, he was back in All-Strongman form.”

Two interesting things about the above picture. One: no black players. Two: The guy at bottom of the steps toward the back,in the dark suit with the tie, is Jim Renfro…my old high school football coach…One tough guy and believe me, it carried over in his coaching methods. Somehow I survived…

Eleven: Who is in the light & minds of the league means nothing! Just like your opinion! The Jets & Cowboys are always in the light & minds of the league. Whats your point? What matters is us winning a Championship & we have the team to do it regardless of your opinion.
