Morning Tailgate: July 29

Posted by Taylor Price on July 29, 2012 – 11:03 AM

San Francisco 49ers Training Camp presented by HP got officially underway on Friday, but the physicality of camp will truly begin today when pads will be worn for the first time of camp.

Even without pads, Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers coaching staff made the most of the early training sessions. “You can’t waste any time, not a single minute,” Harbaugh said on Friday.

Saturday’s practice session saw several standout plays, and the continued role reversal of select backup players. Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee noted the position changes from several players on the roster: “Michael Wilhoite and Demarcus Dobbs were back to defense today; Will Tukuafu, however, played fullback … Cory Nelms has been playing safety the last two days. He also can play cornerback.”

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com noted it was a busy day for first-round pick A.J. Jenkins who saw more action due to Michael Crabtree’s absence from practice. “During the 11-on-11 session, Jenkins made three catches, including a nice grab to end practice,” Maiocco wrote. “On a previous play, Jenkins failed to hang onto a Scott Tolzien throw that was behind him. But Jenkins made the catch in traffic a short time later on a dart from second-string quarterback Colin Kaepernick.”

Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News offered this classic observation of 49ers All-Pro, All-World, defensive tackle Justin Smith: “Remember in the playoff win over the Saints how Justin Smith bulldozed left tackle Jerrod Bushrod and reached over him to grab the back of Drew Brees back near the goal? Smith did almost the same thing today, pushing his way into the pocket past rookie tackle Al Netter.”

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jumnp.

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle shares the details on 49ers radio analyst Eric Davis’ new role with the NFL Network. Branch: “As America snores, Davis, 44, the 49ers’ former Pro Bowl cornerback, will debut on “NFL AM,” a new, four-hour weekday show. The start time: 3 a.m.”

Sam Farmer of The Los Angeles Times recently spoke with wide receiver Kyle Williams on overcoming his role in the NFC title game loss. Williams had this to day about the situation: “There’s a certain type of fire that burns in you after you’ve felt that type of pain. I don’t know that I’ve ever understood that before, because it’s never been that severe. I was fortunate growing up. My dad is who he is, and I was very fortunate to have the advantages I did as a kid. But now I understand it. Now I get it. There’s a certain type of intensity that I’ve never felt before.”

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport shared his training camp experience with the 49ers, including a food recommendation for folks in the South Bay.

49ers.com’s #Camp49 coverage included a practice recap, a “Camp Conversation” with Pro Bowl kicker David Akers, a look at the defensive Smith duo looking to fortify the 49ers pass rush, Patrick Willis’ press pass, and a look at the 49ers fine-tuning the defense to sustain its success in 2012.

ok,please tell me how curtis martin makes the hall of fame before roger craig???
or even marshall faulk for that matter.roger craig paved the way for rb’s with 1,000 yrds rushing & 1,000 yrds receiving. he was the 1st to do it and has won 3 super bowls, there is NO WAY that faulk or martin should be in the hall of fame before roger craig. its my opinion but who are these guys voting people into the hall anyway?? craig’s body of work speaks for itself. for craig not to be in the hall already shows me at least that the voting process is VERY FLAWED!!
    just my opinion

blah blah all those weapons need a QB …alex had the 29th rated offense …if he cant get top 10 this yer he should go and retire ….well most know he is still far behind …..most of the QB’s from last years rookie list will out perform alex in preseason let alone any other skill set ….alex is too far out to be good for the team …i would rather harbaugh suit up and throw to our guys than alex ….gooo niners …carry alex again he wont be around next year when he gets pulled for collin K to make his debute ….sorry alex collin has better skils better arm better talent …better drive to led the team to TD’s keep trying alex that is your famous line …keep on trying to the unemployment line hack

Hey somebody ,any body , how is Leonard Davis doing as for as learning the offense ?

  13. By gary potter on Jul 29, 2012 | Reply

11: they had 26th ranked offense. get your damm figures straight. not much difference from your 29th but still 13-3. you put out all this bs numbers and expect everybody to believe your drivil

according to some of the articles on the home page it would seem that leonard davis has the inside track over boone and kilgore. after all the build up on boone by harbaugh and others, myself lncluded,it would seem that they arent that satisfied with boone or kilgore, davis was here in march for a visit, leaving one to believe that they didnt sign him at that time because they wanted to see what boone and kilgore looked like during mini’s and ota’s, with the siging of davis it would seem clear that they didnt like what they saw and signed davis, which is fine with me I wanted the 49ers to sign him when arizona let him walk

imagine the right side of our line
anthony davis @ RT leonard davis lined up as an eligible reciever TE with vernon davis lined up outside the formation as a TE
THAT WILL BE ONE HELL OF A SWEEP PLAY!

And this is what happens when you have a head coach and gm that are on the same page, thanks

  21. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 30, 2012 | Reply

COACH HARBAUGH ALREADY KNOWS WHAT HE’S GOT WITH RANDY MOSS,MARIO MANNINGHAM,MICHAEL CRABTREE,& TED GINN JR. AND NOW CHRIS OWUSU AND NATHAN PALMER ARE TURNING HEADS AT CAMP. NAPALM IS A BURNER AND OWUSU RAN THE 2ND FASTEST 40 YARD DASH AT THE SCOUTING COMBINE THIS YEAR THIS TEAM IS BIG AND FAST AND THAT IS A DEADLY COMBINATION

If they go on the practice squad the two you’re talking about, are they safe on the practice squad from another team getting them .?
