Morning Tailgate: July 19

Posted by Taylor Price on July 19, 2012 – 9:31 AM

Let’s begin Thursday’s Morning Tailgate by talking golf. It’s only right. After all, it’s the first day of The Open Championship and the American Century Celebrity Golf Championships in Lake Tahoe.

The celebrity tournament, of course, is relevant to the 49ers because Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice is in the field once again and is joined by a first-time 49ers participant, current starting quarterback Alex Smith.

If you happen to be in the Lake Tahoe area over the weekend, click here for tournament information which features a Thursday celeb pro-am. The actual tournament begins on Friday and will be televised on NBC Sports Network from 1-4 p.m. PT, and by NBC on Saturday and Sunday from 12-3 p.m. PT.

NFL.com reporter Ian Rapoport also happens to be on the scene covering all things NFL-related. Rapoport ran into Smith as the quarterback was walking from the 18th green to the first tee box.

“In between signing autographs and dodging stray carts, Smith came off as a guy pumped to get going,” Rapoport wrote. “Considering his team added weapons like Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, I can’t blame him.”

Rapoport also noted that Smith crushed his tee shot. Thatta’ boy Alex.

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee continues to examine the top 49ers storylines heading into camp. In his latest offering, Barrows discusses expectations for this year’s rookie crop compared to the success of last year’s newcomers. Barrows: “Last season the 49ers received 2,451 snaps from their rookies. That’s an impressive number in any season, but it’s almost astounding when you consider there was no full offseason for these rookies to acclimate and that the 49ers were not a team in a rebuilding mode.”

Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News passes along the comments from 49ers Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, who told Yahoo! Sports Radio that he thinks the 49ers can go all the way in 2012.

Matt Bowen of The National Football Post broke down Vernon Davis’ “Vernon Post” touchdown catch against the New Orleans Saints in last year’s playoffs. Bowen: “-You won’t see a better throw than this vs. Cover 2 in the red zone. The Sam Backer will sink to play the “Seam-Hook” technique with the SS playing over the top. (Alex) Smith had to thread this pass over the Sam and in front of safety Roman Harper (driving at a downhill angle). Big time play from the 49ers QB.”

finally, someone from the media acknowleges the throw from alex to vernon vs the saints in the playoffs was a great throw, calling it”a big time play from the 49ers qb” with the improvements alex has made this off season we will be seeing more of that kind of play from our qb,silencing the critics in the media and 11 years and jeromy on this blog

I agree, I know its only one game but some of the plays Alex made in that game….in that PLAYOFF game….really opened my eyes as to the kind of quarterback that he’s capable of being. I’m full on board with Alex Smith leading this team!

omg average throws that have to be made nothing else ….the throws that eli manning made against us were huge with double and triple coverage he laid it in there several times ….alex will never make those throws and he will never be any good …just average and last i checked average was not the norm at QB in the NFL….accept for the here and now where if you practice really good they give you money to be average during the year ….i would rather see a guy in there who nhas skills and progresses rapidly with them than a guy who has to have people help him become and avergae QB in the NFL …………

great article on the camp preview of running backs. with the stable of horses we have @ the rb position, and the blocking skills of bruce miller we will again,no doubt, have another 1,000 yrd sesaon from frank gore. another name being talked about alot is the rhino like blking skills of miller’s primary back-up, cameron bell, brandon jacobs was overheard telling a member of the media about bell, “That guy blocks and runs like a rhino” it goes without saying that bell has earned that nickname as was evident when he crushed navarro bowman on a draw play up the middle and lamichael james took-off for a 65 yard td run. look for bell to make an even bigger impact when pre-season games start as he will no doubt get alot of playing time. this was from an article I found on the super bowl nation blog

11 years with Alex, why dont you cheer for another team already. You are not a real 49ers fan. Everyone knows Alex Smith is no Brady, Montana, Young, but he does’nt have to be. With our Defense, all he has to do is not turn the ball over, and now he has some weapons to work with, and familiar coaches. He looked really good in the Saints game and went 13-3, get off his back already. Clearly you have no football knowledge, You never played pro football, so cares about your stupid opinions/comments. If you dont like the guy, dont watch the game!!!!!!! You should be happy to have an NFL team.. Up here in Canada, we wish we had the 49ers playing here all the time. You need to get a life or cheer for another team then. Im sure everyone will agree with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

whats a matter ’11′ feeling a little lonely, guess you’ve been sitting there at the keyboard like a vulture just waiting for a article with some positive feed back on Alex. So you could counter post, but you come back with the same old BS! I guess something never change?
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

11 years….get a life, Krazy is right. Your team nearly goes to the superbowl and you’re still complaining about Alex Smith? Look in the mirror dude, who gives you the right to criticize him? Go find another team to whine about you idiot.

Jeez, I hate it when I log on and see the whiney words and stupid remarks that 11 years is making. Evidently 11 has nothing else to do but complain about a team that is headed to the SuperBowl. And Alex will be at the helm.

How is it that 11 seems to know what goes on at the practices…or in the locker toom, or during the coaching sessions……oh wait….he doesn’t know….so he is saying stuff just to hear himself talk…..like he really knows something…which he doesn’t.

    PFFFFFTTTTT…(royal razzberry, 11)
