Morning Tailgate: July 12

Posted by Taylor Price on July 12, 2012 – 8:45 AM

And the ESPY goes to…

The 49ers (and Saints) for a remarkable NFL Divisional Playoff game. The 49ers were victorious 36-32 that day, and were rewarded again last night at the 2012 ESPYs.

Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis accepted the honor on behalf of the team and were joined on stage by Jimmy Murphy, a young boy battling cystic fibrosis. According to a tweet from ESPN’s Josh Krulewitz (discovered by Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News) Davis met Murphy before the award show, saw his “Make-A-Wish” button, and asked Murphy to sit with him for the show.

On stage, Davis thanked the 49ers Faithful, teammates, coaches, CEO Jed York and his quarterback, Alex Smith.

After the acceptance speech, Davis, Willis, Murphy and award presenter Joel McHale posed for photos in the ESPY photo booth. (Sorry Joel, we all know who that is on the right side of the picture.)

The NFL dominated the ESPYs last night, winning multiple categories throughout the evening.

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Tony Pauline of SI.com previews Thursday’s supplemental draft and the eight players who could be selected. Pauline: “Teams will have the opportunity Thursday to submit bids on the players they want; whoever commits the highest pick to a prospect is awarded the player and will have to forfeit that pick in the 2013 draft next April.”

Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly suggests the 49ers have the best running back committee in the NFL.

Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.com passes along the comments of 49ers running back Brandon Jacobs, who recently made an appearance on Jim Rome’s television show. Jacobs believes teammate Randy Moss has a chip on his shoulder and is gearing up for a big year in 2012.

There’s a reason why David Akers has been successful, offseason workouts like this…

there has been alot of talk about randy moss, will he continue to play hard when the ball isnt coming his way, will he block 100% on running plays, will the guy quit on the team if we arent winning, and blah, blah, blah. randy moss is in great shape, having taken last year off from football, his body has done alot of recovering
and healing. his desire to win a super bowl is what brought him back, not money, dude has enough money for his childrens children, the contract moss signed is all incentive ladden, the more moss plays and the better he does, the more he will get paid.no,this dude came back to win a super bowl and will put his heart and soul into helping this team get to, and win, a super bowl. an inspired randy moss is a dangerous randy moss. I really believe that moss will lead the way for the other wide-outs and set an example for all this year. it is going to be a great year and it all starts on july 27th,,see you at fanfest,,,,,,GO 49ERS!!!!!!!!

heard a radio interview with vic fangio today talking about aldon smith and if fangio thinks him ready to take over the full time starting duties at ROLB.
” I believe aldon has some more work to do at this point. lets face it,for the last 7 years parys haralson has been one of the top 5 run defenders in the nfl. parys will continue to start at ROLB for us in our base 3-4 pkgs. and also in some of our nickel pkgs. but aldon will see much more playing time this year than he did last season.”
I have said for a long time now that parys haralson is the un-sung hero of our defense, the guy is a run stuffing beast, the season cant get here soon enough for this 49er fan,,,GO 49ERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree 100%. Randy Moss will shine because he has a chip in his shoulder. In addition, 49ers will provide total team support from offense to defense. It is very interesting to see how 49ers can go into playoff. Go 49ers!

rjdniner your opinon was not asked for nor is it worth a $hit, you have been told by so many people that your opinions and comments are just plain stupid, and no you moron, hardly any media outlets have been talking about parys haralson you idiot, why else would our defensive co-ordinator say that parys is our unsung hero of our defense, your an idiot

rjdniner, you let your personal dislike of me cloud your intelligent way of thinking and communicating, oh wait you couldnt do either of those things before you disliked me, as has been pointed out by so many others,
I guess its not your fault your stupid,it must be hereditary in your case

@ dante, yes I agree with you, moss will shine to prove everyone wrong about him and his desire to win a super bowl will drive him, and his incetive ladden contract will motivate him

ok guys take it easy …..mow back to the QB talk ……..Smith rather the ill try harder ( thank for that alex) i would hate to think you were trying the whole way for 7 years you were holding back and still in transition from the cush college gig to setting up the niners to pay you even more money after you took over 80 million and still have not done any thing ….try harder alex ….what does that mean any ways ….we have to try harder ….dude the rest of the team is ready ….you are the big question mark or rather lack there of any talent at the position accept for his height and suposed to be smart label wich i am still waiting to see how that pans out for him …not good so far and I hope he finds a magic bottle before the season starts and makes it happen for the rest of the team …THEY HAVE WORKED VERY HARD UNDER SAME …ISSUES WITH COACHES AND COORDIANTORS AND WR’S PROBLEMS AND EVEN LACK OF DEPTH AND THE ENTIRE TEAM IS READY AND HAS BEEN …I WOULD HATE TO SEE THEM DISAPOINTED AGAIN AFTER CARRYING ALEX LAST YEAR

the 49ers deal with moss makes it a win-win situation for them. up to this point moss has been the consumate professional, teaching the young guys how to be a pro, sitting in the front row of every meeting, puting on a show of hands during practice, and if things dont work out,if he goes back to “the randy of old” they can cut him without doing a whole lot of cap damage. its good to be a 49er fan

  10. By NorCalNinerFan on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply

I have never heard of a single Niner saying that they were “disappointed” (like most big words, you spelled it wrong) in Alex. All I have ever heard is how proud they are of the job he did last year and that they are happy to play with him.

Eleven Years with Alex, you wasted all that time writting the gibberish above & I doubt anyone knows what you saying.

The best way to reply to you is not too, have a nice day .

rjdniner…who are you talking to? And do you see the irony in your comment? You obviously replied to someone.

  14. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply

@ SHIP,rjdniner had a problem with my first two posts at the top of this blog, and in his usual stupid fashion,he tried to say the most talked about subject of this week was old news, and the tried to say that parys haralson gets talked about all the time, the dude is an uninformed idiot

  15. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply

our own defensive co-ordinator in an interview today said that parys is the most un-talked about, unsung hero of our defense and is one of the top 5 run stoppers in the NFL

  16. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply

for the last 7 years parys haralson has been the anchor at our ROLB spot, and you hardly EVER hear his name metioned in the mainstream media, let alone here in the san francisco bay area,so for rjdniner to say every sports reporter has been talking about parys haralson just shows me dude has no friggin idea of what he’s talking about and its no wonder so many others on this blog point that out to him as well,,,,

La Micheal James is the next Darren Sproles. I want to see other teams deal with Moss, crab, vernon, walker, gore, maningham, hunter, La Mike and MR.Jacobs at the goal line. Oh yeah and we have a smart QB who can look at your coverage pre-play and get the edge on the defense. Who was more creative than that Roman guy calling plays with what we had. He is underrated but thats good for us. I cannot wait. Neither can my family. GO GIANTS! way to show up in the BIG GAME GUYS!

  18. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply

great article by taylor price on the cornerbacks, with carlos rogers, tarell brown, chris culliver and perrish cox,we have a solid set of cover corners who excell at playing zone, and with tramaine brock and curtis holcomb providing depth at both outside and in the nickel,we are quite set at CB. this defense is loaded with depth at all positions, but I feel we may be a little light on the defensive line, our young guys like tukuafu and williams will have come on strong this year, training camp is almost here, plenty of competition coming

  19. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 12, 2012 | Reply

@ Spokane, yup I agree with you 100% on LaMichael james, with all the speed we now have on the outside, screens and swings will be big gainers ,and with the top off of opposing defenses, the underneath will be wide open for vernon, delanie walker and our rb’s,,man, cant wait

I know it’s late, but I still have to say it…..WAYYY TO GO GIANTS IN THE ALL STAR GAME. AND CONGRATS TO THE “MELKMAN” FOR THE “MVP” AWARD.

Yes, I am a fan of both the Niners and the Giants of San Francisco. I can’t wait for October for baseball, and July 26th can’t get here fast enough….

    Go Niners, Go Giants.

With the players we have its hard to imagine not doing good plus chemistry is the most important thing for any team smith, gore ,davis ,willis all drafted and stayed with us for years and lets face it that never happens anymore when players stick with a team so long all they have is chemistry now with the right leader we can play the game how our boys always imagined winning we have more talent than ever and a bigger drive and purpose to return to glory after a long hard 9 years smith is no montana or young by far but lets hope he can be a phoenix and rise from his ashes to a superbowl or two

really good to get some news of Dashon Goldson’s mindset; and i for one am pulling for you Dashon, sign the one-year tender and excel one more year and you will be able to write your own ticket. Team comes first, and be confident of your teammates making plays, play under control; and let her rip !!! Now, it’s Sept. 9, Lambeau Field, yahoooooo, what an opener for the season !!!! And yes, #1 D, it is good to be a 49er fan, always has been, since ’72 for me; but better these days ! And Alex, you ARE the man, we’re pulling for you to make this year THE BEST ever for yourself and your team and all of us fans . . . Sept. 9th – “Sack the Pack” and let it begin with a 49er “W”!!!

Chill…I am in no way saying that Alex is Montana or Young for the record BUT ask yourself this question honestly. How would Montana or Young have done with the revolving door of offensive coordinators & ZERO offensive minded head coaches, very weak offensive line until a few years ago & very shallow core of WR’s over those years. Ask yourself minus BILL WALSH and minus a stable of offensive coordinators who won championships other places & minus hall of fame offensive players around them instead having the likes of Jimmy Rae & other unmentionables DO YOU REALLY FEEL Montana & Young has the numbers & success they had??? Once again peoples big picture TEAM concept is lacking so severly that FOOTBALL IQ by many is laughable. Wake up & look at the whole picture!

  24. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 13, 2012 | Reply

@ dave g. yea man I agree with you that montana or young would no way have had the success that they had if they had to go through what alex smith has had to endure. the entire franchise had nothing for the last 7-8 years, no front office staff that was worth a crud,no coaching staff that could teach anybody anything,a pourous offensive line,,yeah alex has had to play with nothing, even after alex had gore and vernon, the coaching staff that was in place had no clue what to do with them. jed york and trent ballke have brought this franchise back to elite status in a short manner of time and the hireing of jim harbaugh and vic fangio to run the offense and defense was the best move the 49ers have made since eddie debartalo jr. hired coach bill walsh, with the core of our star players locked up with long-term deals, next years free agency and draft will be very, very accomadating
