Morning Tailgate: July 6

Posted by Alex Espinoza on July 6, 2012 – 11:12 AM

Training camp is just around the corner and 49ers QB Alex Smith has plans to unwind at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe on the final weekend before camp begins at 49ers headquarters. Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee recently spoke to Smith about the upcoming American Century Championship, which will also feature fellow NFL quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo. The star-studded field also includes 49ers legend Jerry Rice and Michael Jordan among others.

This doesn’t mark the first time that Smith has taken part in a high-profile celebrity golf tournament this offseason, as he caddied for coach Jim Harbaugh at the Pebble Beach Pro Am in February shortly after playing the Giants in a charity shootout. But don’t be looking for Harbaugh to be carrying Smith’s bags next week in Lake Tahoe, as he won’t be caddying anytime soon.

More headlines — including stories on Kendall Hunter, Donte Whitner and Joe Montana — can be found after the jump.

CSNBayArea.com provided audio of Smith’s recent conference call, when he also discussed the 49ers in 2012. Smith: “The great thing is I really feel like the expectations inside our locker room are higher than any of them outside our locker room.”

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com picked second-year RB Kendall Hunter as his 2012 breakout candidate for the 49ers. Rosenthal: “Kendall Hunter is going to break out this year because he has ‘it.’ And because he was drafted by the right team.”

Sam Monson of ProFootballFocus.com did a statistical breakdown of defensive backs and listed Donte Whitner as the league’s eighth-most efficient tackler in the secondary.

Ray Didinger of CSNPhilly.com hosted a Q&A with fans and recalled a game when Joe Montana defeated Buddy Ryan and the Eagles. Didinger: “When I think back on his great career that is the game I think about first, even more than his four Super Bowl victories. That was the fearsome Eagles defense coached by Buddy Ryan with Reggie White, Seth Joyner, Jerome Brown and Clyde Simmons. They pounded Montana that day, sacking him eight times (White had three). It got so ugly that Mike Holmgren, the 49ers offensive coordinator, wanted to pull Montana to spare him further punishment. Montana refused to come out.”

Pat Yasinkas of ESPN.com broke down the new changes for the replay system in 2012. Yasinkas: “One change will be that all turnovers will be subject to review by the replay booth. The second will be much more obvious — and probably enjoyable — to fans in stadiums. All NFL stadium video boards now will show the exact same replay the lead official is viewing under the hood on the sideline video monitor.”

Matt Bowen of NationalFootballPost.com examined Jimmy Graham’s 66-yard touchdown pass against the 49ers in last season’s NFC Divisional classic. Bowen: “Check out the throw here from Brees. This is good coverage from 49ers LB Patrick Willis playing 2-Man technique. Exactly how you are coached up to play in this situation. However, Brees put this ball on the back shoulder of Graham (away from the defender’s leverage). Perfect pass given the route and coverage.”

Don’t forget to get your tickets to 2012 49ers Fan Fest while they last. Also check out 49ers.com’s coverage from yesterday, which included a Camp Preview of the wide receivers, an Offseason Q&A session with Brett Swain and a behind-the-scenes look at the 2012 Gold Rush photo shoot (video/photos).

  5. By roodles111 on Jul 6, 2012 | Reply

i think they keep 8 linebackers on the roster this season, the fleming injury i think hurt a little bit, but there is plenty depth they should be solid again this season

Roodles…you like that annoying lil insecure boy who just keeps yapping too much without actually thinking about what you saying. When you talk too much without thinking you say a lot of stupid sh!t. Advice: slow down & wait to hit puberty then go enlist with the Big Brothers program & get yourself a mentor. Say “I am looking for a Big Brother who is a confident alpha male who knows who he is. I want to learn.” Give yourself a year absorbing what it actually means to be a man. Then maybe, maybe you will say logical things. Remember its not the quantity of what you say, its the quality.

For an Alpha male like myself its self taught. The best you can hope for is to aspire to be average. Make no mistake YOU WILL NEVER BE AT MY LEVEL.

Roodles111 If they had to they could let Fleming go, he’s just a rookie. It didn’t hurt them not one bite. Hey if you put 9 in the box I, all throw that ball on you all day long…

  15. By roodles111 on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

hey kezar, i try to talk 9er football, but people like you dont want to admit the truth about some of the players,so they start name calling, trash talkin, when i make suggestions on trying to make the team better,

  16. By Basil on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

The best players will start all there is to that! Smith will have to outplay out Payrs for the starting job, and if he does he will start? And if Emperor Goddell doesn’t punish Aldon why would we? may the best players step forward!

I can’t wait for the season to start.
    go 49ers!!!

basil, i agree the better player should play

  19. By dave g. on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

Wow. Roodles even your trash talking makes absolutely no sense. I think I get it now you one of those special needs students who rides the lil yellow bus to school. Ok then I forgive you then if thats the case.

  20. By rjdniner on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

First we are not going to make the team better by making these suggestions. We have absolutely nothing to do with the make up of the team, so people get over it .head coaching is not based on a fan’s wishes, is the investigation complete on Aldon?

  21. By dave g. on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

The absolute best players at each position will earn their positions & for anyone to suggest that the coaching staff will choose a player to start over another for reasons other than that is not logical. Also, for someone to suggest that we just cut Crabtree is complete idiocracy (july 5th blogs). How in the world cant someone see the big picture? Its not about not liking someone admitting the truth…Its not about defending one guy. Its about what is best for the team. Whether you believe in Crabs moving forward or not, to suggest just cutting him without even trading him is the dumbest thing. Then a guy throws out payrolls, talks about in “the box”, etc. like he knows something. Crabs has value dumb@ss whether you like him or not, so you would eat his payroll, let another team get him & you get zero in return WHEN HE HAD NO HEALTHY RECIEVERS OPPOSITE OF HIM. Man how can people be that stupid?

  22. By rjdniner on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

Dave g, your right. And another thing roodles111 am sure with all that football knowledge you say you have, have you notice what this coaching staff is doing and what they have accomplished, Crabtree is not going anywhere until he comes up for free agency .with randy or Mario out there what do you thinks going to happen, Alex is going to have the biggest grin on he’s face when he looks at the def and Crabs is one on one. ….

  23. By roodles111 on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

dave, thanks for making my point, rjd, crabs cant beat one on one coverage so what ever alex is smiling at im sure will not last long when he looks crabs way

  24. By Michael Mosher on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

i think its kind of funny how everyone is talking about green bay ,dallas, phily,,,ect,,, thats ok we willstay below radar and show everyone who the better team was last year and most certainly this year,,,..go niners

  25. By rjdniner on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

We will see come that first game, you are NOT a49er fan if your busting on one of the player’s, remember Romans only had one year with them , and who did Crabs have to learn from last year no one. Let me get this straight you’re saying that you have no faith in Jim and his wide receivers coach to help him be a better receiver. Didn’t you see? Those catches he made last year.?

  26. By rjdniner on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

that last post is for you roodl111

  28. By rjdniner on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

Why are you asking me you saw the game just like I did they were having problems, and the catches he made that got them into the play offs what about those. ? Or had you forgotten? Am going to write this aging. Have faith in Jim and his staff .

  29. By gary potter on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

why don’t we quit knocking crabs and let the season play out?? as for r111 you say he can’t get open. could you if the only other receiver was the tight end??

  30. By roodles111 on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

trainig camp getting closer everyday, so we will see what happens, but its the guy [owner] who signs the checks thats got the final say on who stays and who plays.

  31. By Basil on Jul 7, 2012 | Reply

“we willstay below radar ” sorry but no chance in he!! we come in bellow the radar, this year we travel with a large bullseye on our backs. And our first game of the season ‘Packers’ at Lambeau this game, even though its our first game I think its super important, its the Packers and they’ve beaten us 12 of the last 13 games, and its at Lambeau last time we won 1990!
I do not like this team and I don’t like their smug QB, and when we’re through with them, I want to see Rogers looked out his earholes. Theres no doubt Rogers is a real good QB but that being said I’m a-okay with our guy.
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

once again, the stupid,mindl-less rabblings on of some people on this blog are really quite amusing. the lack of knowledge of football, on any level,is clearly evident.I would suggest to those of you who seem inclined to keep posting in an effort to make yourself feel or seem smart , that you keep your comments simple. try posting things like,, cant wait for the season to start, or,,really hoping alex smith does better this year. things like that will hide or mask the fact that your not as football savvy as you seem to think you are

  33. By gary potter on Jul 8, 2012 | Reply

r111. you are wrong about the guy who signs the checks having the final say. jed york has given control of the team to baalke and coach jh he said so himself. they make all football decisions.

  34. By gary potter on Jul 8, 2012 | Reply

i meant football decisions. he is not like jerry jones.

Interestingly enough, the vaunted Eagles CBs Asante Samuel (1), Nnamdi Asomugha (3), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (12) from last year all are ranked among the worst tacklers. Now you start seeing why the “Dream Team” didn’t work out.

  37. By Basil on Jul 8, 2012 | Reply

But our dream team will work out, because our guys are mean Tackling Machines, they sure the he!! didn’t miss many tackles
last year. No rushing TD’s say’s it all ,, yeah okay one RTD!
Like everybody else here, I’m finding it very hard just waiting for something to happen, preseason game anything!

  40. By roodles111 on Jul 8, 2012 | Reply

1 def, that last blog meant for me? thats wonderful, i understand the 9ers aint made the playoffs in what the last 10 seasons, so them winning the division and a playoff game, you and dave see that as a successful season

  41. By roodles111 on Jul 8, 2012 | Reply

thats what makes us different, to me the only successful season is the team that WINS the SUPERBOWL period, so go ahead and call me what ever name makes you guys feel better about yourself

  42. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

DONT SEE ANYWHERE THAT I SINGLED YOU OUT ROODLES111

  43. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

but since you spoke up,,,EVERY SINGLE team and front office believe that making the play-offs is a successful season. winning the super bowl is a huge bonus. every time you open your mouth to speak, something stupid rolls out of it.
to you only winning the super bowl is a successful season?? man,you have been a unhappy fan since the 94 season. if your even old enough to remember that year. you clearly make dave g’s point validated. do you even realize how stupid your last post sounds??? calling a season successful by only winning the super bowl once again shows your lack of football intelligence. so,,,last year wasnt successful for the 49ers??? each season, every team in the nfl starts out with its goal being to win its respective division,if it becomes evident that they wont be able to win the division, they set their sights on a wild card berth,IN ORDER TO MAKE THE PLAY-OFFS. you dont know squat about football little boy

  44. By Basil on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

‘hats what makes us different, to me the only successful season is the team that WINS the SUPERBOWL period, ”

do you hold yourself to those high standards ?

  45. By Basil on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

Roodles: I’m not even sure how you an enjoy the game?

I don’t think you should ever get involved in children sports, I would like to believe that there is something to be said of the
    old saying?
“winning isn’t everything, its how you play the game”
and yes that does carry over to the NFL. the Saints come to mind!

  46. By rjdniner on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

And how many teams have won the super bowl by being the wild card 6, besides there to much that can happen in a season, successes to me comes at the end of the season .

  47. By Basil on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

The 2010 9-7 seagulls won the nfl-w and then beat the 13-3 Saints in a home playoff game, anything can happen!

  48. By dave g. on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

Its not about name calling Roodles. You have a history of saying many and I mean many inaccurate things on these blogs but you really think you know what you talking about. Its annoying! I am someone who points out the facts but it helps you sleep better at night to narrow it down to just a name caller.

  49. By Basil on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

As far as the Crabman goes he’s ‘never’ had the coaching that he’s needed, now he has Moss to mentor him. and he’s not having the foot problems, and I believe this is the first time he’s been a part of preseason workouts ?
This is the first year of his new career, its up to him, he should be one happy camper to be a part of this team. They all know that last year was no fluke.

  50. By dave g. on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

Yeah Roodles, you the ONLY guy here who wants to win a Super Bowl. Is this fool for real?

  51. By roodles111 on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

dave, you said i am the ONLY guy here wanting to win the superbowl, that is the DUMBEST statement ever

  52. By roodles111 on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

Wow. You can’t even get sarcasm. Your stupidity keeps amazing me Roodles.

  54. By SHIP on Jul 9, 2012 | Reply

So roodles111 you saying just because people are pointing out your mistakes it must mean they the ones with the problem? Like its impossible you could be wrong? So you saying you have high standards & they don’t so because they busting you out on your errors you going to make up stuff and say people consider non Super Bowl winning years successful. Not sure where you getting them saying that? Dude you wrong about a lot of stuff (accept it), why does that have to mean there is something wrong with them for telling it to you like it is? Wake up! Its not about any of that other stuff. You just wrong about a lot. Also, you may want to look up the word sarcasm in the dictionary.

  55. By Basil on Jul 10, 2012 | Reply

Myself I would say that 2011 was a very successful year for us, each year teams sets goals, but not all can set them SB high, Some aim for 500, some to ‘just’ make the playoffs, This year our goal is to WIN the SB, We have all the pieces in place!
