Training camp is just around the corner and 49ers QB Alex Smith has plans to unwind at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe on the final weekend before camp begins at 49ers headquarters. Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee recently spoke to Smith about the upcoming American Century Championship, which will also feature fellow NFL quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo. The star-studded field also includes 49ers legend Jerry Rice and Michael Jordan among others.
This doesn’t mark the first time that Smith has taken part in a high-profile celebrity golf tournament this offseason, as he caddied for coach Jim Harbaugh at the Pebble Beach Pro Am in February shortly after playing the Giants in a charity shootout. But don’t be looking for Harbaugh to be carrying Smith’s bags next week in Lake Tahoe, as he won’t be caddying anytime soon.
More headlines — including stories on Kendall Hunter, Donte Whitner and Joe Montana — can be found after the jump.
CSNBayArea.com provided audio of Smith’s recent conference call, when he also discussed the 49ers in 2012. Smith: “The great thing is I really feel like the expectations inside our locker room are higher than any of them outside our locker room.”
Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com picked second-year RB Kendall Hunter as his 2012 breakout candidate for the 49ers. Rosenthal: “Kendall Hunter is going to break out this year because he has ‘it.’ And because he was drafted by the right team.”
Sam Monson of ProFootballFocus.com did a statistical breakdown of defensive backs and listed Donte Whitner as the league’s eighth-most efficient tackler in the secondary.
Ray Didinger of CSNPhilly.com hosted a Q&A with fans and recalled a game when Joe Montana defeated Buddy Ryan and the Eagles. Didinger: “When I think back on his great career that is the game I think about first, even more than his four Super Bowl victories. That was the fearsome Eagles defense coached by Buddy Ryan with Reggie White, Seth Joyner, Jerome Brown and Clyde Simmons. They pounded Montana that day, sacking him eight times (White had three). It got so ugly that Mike Holmgren, the 49ers offensive coordinator, wanted to pull Montana to spare him further punishment. Montana refused to come out.”
Pat Yasinkas of ESPN.com broke down the new changes for the replay system in 2012. Yasinkas: “One change will be that all turnovers will be subject to review by the replay booth. The second will be much more obvious — and probably enjoyable — to fans in stadiums. All NFL stadium video boards now will show the exact same replay the lead official is viewing under the hood on the sideline video monitor.”
Matt Bowen of NationalFootballPost.com examined Jimmy Graham’s 66-yard touchdown pass against the 49ers in last season’s NFC Divisional classic. Bowen: “Check out the throw here from Brees. This is good coverage from 49ers LB Patrick Willis playing 2-Man technique. Exactly how you are coached up to play in this situation. However, Brees put this ball on the back shoulder of Graham (away from the defender’s leverage). Perfect pass given the route and coverage.”
Don’t forget to get your tickets to 2012 49ers Fan Fest while they last. Also check out 49ers.com’s coverage from yesterday, which included a Camp Preview of the wide receivers, an Offseason Q&A session with Brett Swain and a behind-the-scenes look at the 2012 Gold Rush photo shoot (video/photos).
