Morning Tailgate: July 2

Posted by Taylor Price on July 2, 2012 – 10:12 AM

Back from a brief offseason vacation, the Morning Tailgate returns with all the top 49ers headlines from the final week of June.

Out of all the sporting contests that took place in 2011, San Francisco’s wild win over the New Orleans Saints in NFL’s the Divisional Playoff round has earned a 2012 ESPY nominee in the “Best Game” category.

You can vote for the 49ers here, who square off against a Missouri-Kansas college basketball game and Game 6 of the 2011 World Series between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals.

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee spoke with Saints quarterback Drew Brees for a recent story on his relationship with San Francisco signal caller Alex Smith. Barrows shared Brees’ positive comments about Smith in Q&A format, as well as the print version that ran in Sunday’s paper.

ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando examined the 49ers wishes to sustain defensive dominance in 2012. Sando:  “The 49ers came within a blocked punt, a career-long run from a backup quarterback and a 35-yard penalty of preventing even one rushing touchdown all season. As it was, San Francisco set an NFL record for fewest allowed in a 16-game season.  Not bad for a team with a new coaching staff, a severely compressed offseason and five new defensive starters. (A sixth, Isaac Sopoaga, changed positions on the line.)”

Jessica A. York of The Vallejo Times-Herald shares the experience of 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who recently got a test ride of Superman Ultimate Flight at Six Flags in Vallejo.

Comcast SportsNet Bay Area offers video footage of Harbaugh enjoying the roller coaster ride.

CSN Bay Area also continued its “Meet the Rookies” series with a video profile on first-round pick A.J. Jenkins.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shares information on the NFL’s decision to move Pacific time kickoffs back 10 minutes. Maiocco: “The schedule changes is expected to impact seven 49ers start times, including the season opener at Green Bay and five home games.”

49ers.com’s offseason coverage continued with Patrick Willis’ No. 10 standing on the NFL Network’s Top 100 Players of 2012 list, a profile on the latest career change in the life of former 49ers tight end Jamie Williams and a look at the recent changes to the team’s practice facility.

“after the jump”? WTF does that even mean?

  8. By Ladybug on Jul 2, 2012 | Reply

JJ: after the jump means that there is more information on the subject at the end of the article and a spot to click on to get it. Lots of times, though, in this blog, the writer fails to have something to click on. So just ignore it.

My inside sources at 49er headquarters say the team is working hard, morale is high, and they promise they will play to best of their ability, each man, every time.

Can’t ask for much more than that. GO 49ers.

Anybody who questions Alex Smith as our starting QB, is severly retartded and knows nothing about the 49ers, as much as theyd like to wish and blog how they know so much on the subject if they cant put it together than there is more wrong upstairs than I thought. Between what Alex did last year and what the coaches are saying right now there is no one in the organization besdes Eleven Years and Jeremy who quesstion our starting QB right now. Wow, get over you issues and join us in reality.
