Morning Tailgate: June 18

Posted by Alex Espinoza on June 18, 2012 – 11:08 AM

The 49ers Faithful celebrated Father’s Day this weekend and shared their favorite photos of their #NinerDads on Twitter. Check out @49ers to see some of the best pictures submitted on Sunday.

The holiday also held a special meaning for sixth-year CB Tarell Brown, who lost his father to a heart attack shortly before being drafted by the 49ers in 2007. Brown spoke to Nate Kuester of National Football Authority recently and spoke about the strong relationship Brown had with his late father, who inspired him to play football at a young age.

Things are a bit quieter now around 49ers headquarters with the conclusion of veteran minicamp, but 49ers.com has you covered with a wrap up of the last team-wide action until training camp. Those headlines — plus a trip down memory lane with Joe Montana and Steve Young — can be found after the jump.

Daniel Brown of the Bay Area News Group was on hand last week as Joe Montana, Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Jim Plunkett supported a Harris Barton and UCSF fundraiser toward causes like brain tumor research. At the fundraiser dinner, Montana, Young and the other quarterbacks shared their favorite Super Bowl Memories. Brown: “Montana and Brady eventually did settle on a favorite Super Bowl moment. So did Aaron Rodgers and Jim Plunkett. All of them shared stories of their worst losses, too, and told tales of obstacles and perseverance — and they kept on talking for the better part of an hour.”

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com also attended the event and spoke to the group of talented signal-callers. Maiocco: “Montana and Young, members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and competitive teammates, were seated next to one another on stage. Prior to the event, they spoke comfortably to one another and mingled with guests.”

Kevin Lynch of the San Francisco Chronicle watched a minicamp session with former 49ers coach Steve Mariucci last week and recently hosted him on the air for KNBR. Lynch and Mariucci came away impressed from the practices, which were very intense in Lynch’s estimation. Lynch:  “The offense sported many different looks and it all went off with hardly a glitch. Players moved in and out of the huddle smoothly and everyone seemed to know what they were doing. The 49ers also went through a number of different special teams’ situations almost daily.”

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee also offered up five notable observations from last week’s veteran minicamp. Barrows:  “Overall this spring – counting OTAs and minicamps – the two biggest standouts may have been a pair of newcomers, Randy Moss and cornerback Perrish Cox.”

Mike Sando of ESPN.com also weighed in on the 49ers offseason and said Randy Moss made a positive first impression with his new team. Sando: “49ers safety Donte Whitner played against Moss for four seasons in the AFC East. Whitner sees Moss as highly motivated and still possessing sufficient physical abilities.”

Sando also spoke to Whitner about his pick for the 49ers breakout player in 2012. Sando: “The San Francisco 49ers’ Ahmad Brooks has probably played too long for anyone to consider him in the same vein, but his name came up first when I recently asked veteran safety Donte Whitner which teammate was ‘primed for a big jump’ in 2012.”

according to most of the media that have been attending the 49ers mini-camps and O.T.A.’S they are all in agreement that josh johnson has been outplaying kaepernick. and with all that I have read on espn.com ninersnation.com and other various media outlets, kaepernick and aj jenkins have struggled mightily throughout camps and ota’s,those are media qoutes not my own. im glad training camp is right around the corner.we will know soon enough what our 2012 53 man roster will look like. boy wouldnt that just chap 11 & jeromys hide if kaepernick lost the #2 qb spot? they have been saying for months now that kaepernick was MUCH BETTER than alex smith and should start over alex

Know doubt! Can’t wait to see what those two have to say when Alex’s is leading us back to Playoffs. For two guys that talk NINER talk, I don’t understand all the negativity that comes out about the Leader of the Offense that is ALEX. Peace to all NINERS.

I didn’t really care for Al Davis much (RIP), but he had one thing right when he said “just win baby”!. Perhaps these fools who have nothing better to do than trash Alex after a 13-3 season will just dry up and blow away when we actually improve in 2012.

  4. By LEW on Jun 18, 2012 | Reply

It was because of our def!! that we went 13-3 not so much alex no ring smith!! get it right; This is coming from a very long time niner fan as well, so it is not from a negative standpoint it is from a real point of view who knows a great qb from a very average one(alex smith)

  5. By Basil on Jun 18, 2012 | Reply

We both know who the WR’s Joe and Steve were throwing too, they could make any QB look good. Alex hasn’t had anybody like that to throw too, probably the reason we went out and picked up WR”s.
No ring Alex … RIGHT he’s the reason, eh?

  6. By David on Jun 18, 2012 | Reply

Alex No Ring Smith = Alex heavily improving in a good system Smith. soon to be Alex Pro Bowl Smith

  7. By Basil on Jun 18, 2012 | Reply

I believe Alex Smith is the QB that is going to take us to da super bowl, Yep I do believe!
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

  8. By roodles111 on Jun 18, 2012 | Reply

alex doesnt need to be elite to win a superbowl the explosion pieces that they added will for sure help the offense but the def will carry this team and i cant wait to see the def this year same system a full off season and a year under their belt all eleven starters returning they should be a lot better hard to believe huh as long as the coaching staff dosnt out coach itself

  9. By roodles111 on Jun 18, 2012 | Reply

i wish vic the d cordinator would get the best def ever in their heads give that def something to shoot for history if they can get close to 85 bears we and the media will be talking dynasty

    1) A great head coach
    2) Good and healthy recievers
    3) Sam offensive system 2 years in a row
    4) Fans that have his back!

ALEX SMITH IS FOR REAL! NOW DO YOUR PART AND GET HIS BACK!

I wish everyone would stop trashing Alex Smith. Look at how Steve Young’s career was in Tampa Bay… or did everyone that says they’re a Niners fan forget that. It was under Joe Montana, Bill Walsh, and George Seifert that Steve became the great QB he was/is. The same can be said of Aaron Rodgers. Sit behind a HOF QB and tell me you won’t be good. Alex hasn’t had that. He was thrown into the fire, six or seven different playbooks to learn, and now that we get a great staff and ONE book for two seasons… people still doubt him. I say, WHATEVER! I believed in Alex when we drafted him over Rodgers and I still do. The vital missing pieces to our offense have been added through the past few years. Cases in point: good ‘ol #85, V. Davis; #15 M. Crabtree; #21 F Gore (been here a bit); D. Walker, K. Hunter, T. Ginn Jr. .. need I continue for the, prior to this offseason roster? Didn’t think so. Now, our front office has gone out and added the deep threat(s) we needed so badly … M. Manningham, A.J. Jenkins, … and this future HOF guy named, Randy Moss. Add to that, the power game of Jacobs and the speed of LaMicheal James in the backfield and it’s ON!!
I can’t take away from what our AWESOME D did last year. It was vital that we got all the starters to return and our front office accomplished that. But, talk of “the greatest ever?” I agree with Vic… shouldn’t say it, mention it, or try it … just go out and DO IT! Our D is great, but some of you are comparing to the “Steel Curtain” of the 70’s … the ’85 Bears… the Ravens in the late 90’s – present … I’m sorry to say, there’s no comparing them to each other… a different game was played then than now. Each D was the greatest of it’s time… as ours is now.
In closing, I believe the 49ers Franchise (Owners, GM’s, coaches) has done the best they could with the pieces they’ve had in place. Keep up the great work and the Lombardi Trophy will be ours again! Six and Seven will be Niners Heaven!!!

OMG, OMG, OMG…NINER HATERS…NINER LOVER..CAN’T WE JUST ALL GET ALONE…WTF..MAN/WOMAN,…CAN’T WE ALL JUST BE GLAD THAT THEY ARE DOING WELL AGAIN..AT LEAST THEIR RECORD SPEAK FOR IT… I WAS THERE DURING THE LATE AND EARLY 90’S AND ITS WAS A GREAT TIME BUT DURING THE PAST FEW YEAR IT BEEN HARD…WHAT I’M SAYING IS YOU CAN’T BLAME THE SYSTEM OR THE PLAYERS WHEN YOU GET A NEW COACH OR OC EVERY YEAR/OTHER YEAR…..MY POINT IT ….REMEMBER…// TRENT DIFLER //…WHO HOLD THE WORST RECORD IN EVERY STAT IN THE SB…”’WIN THE SB”’…ALL I’M SAYING IS THAT ALEX SMITH IS NOT JOE OR STEVE…ALEX IS SIMILAR TO TRENT….HE IS NOT MY SUPER HERO.. AS LONG AS HE MANAGE THE GAME THE WE WILL GET THE RING…FACT:::THIS TEAM IS NOT MADE OF HIGH ALTER EAGER PLAYER..ITS A TEAM CONCEPT TEAM..AND THATS WHAT MAKES ME BELEIVE WE CAN BRING IT HOME THIS YEAR…NINER NINER SINCE ’85

In my opinion, Alex has to prove to niner fans all across the country that last season was no fluke. Let’s not forget before Harbaugh came over as coach everybody wanted Smith out of S.F.

  14. By rjdniner on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

Roodles111. I totally agree with your posts, we could possibly get that 6th ring as we have all seen what happens to a coaching staff when that happens, a lot of money is thrown at the O.C or D.C . But thank goodness we’ve got a head coach and G.M that’s going to be around for a long time.

  15. By dave g. on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

LEW: We went 13-3 because of the entire team! If you think it was because of only one unit or one person or only a group THAN you have zero idea of what a team sport is about. No one will argue that Alex has not put up the numbers of Joe Montana & Steve Young. Everyone know this! But even those players needed great players around them to reach the numbers they did. If you truly are a longtime 49er fan you will remember how much Young got grilled for not being Joe Montana and not winning one with the talent he had. Do you remember his struggles getting past Dallas with much more offensive talent around him??? Before you post a short-sighted blog if you truly a long-time 49er fan start dusting off some of your long-term memory!

basil aren’t you tired of seeing “your comment is awaiting moderation” everytime you switch your name from basil to rjdniner?

  17. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

rjdniner/basil, you know nothing of football office protocol: OC’s and DC’s RARELY make the big bucks, only special situations arise when a OC or DC get a big money contract. leave the football talk to the big boys and go back to playing with your dolls

  18. By rjdniner on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

Steve Spagnualo, Gaints to Rams, and there are a lot more names that can be mentioned, so aging here’s laughing at you, ha ha ha ha

  19. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

so aging heres laughing at you? what does that mean basil/rjdniner

  20. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

spag’s got an avg. salary contract to go to the rams numbnuts, and no,there are not that many that can be spoken of you idiot. OC’s and DC’s change teams so very often that teams dont give them big money, only in very certain cases are the guys that call the plays on ofense and defense given high value contracts, evan a casual football would be able to understand that logic

  21. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

watch its going to take at least an hour for you to change your name to basil to respond to my post, pathetic, and yes your I.P.address is the same as when you posted as basil you moron

there have been at least a DOZEN different people that pointed out to you how lame your posts are,and when I tried to be as polite as I could pointing this out to you,you had a tempertantrum, went to your basil alter ego,, I laugh at the fact you have to wait for “your comment is awaiting moderation”,, to defend yourself

  23. By roodles111 on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

its a copycat league so when a team does well the teams that didnt go after the cordinators for head coaching positions with keeping vic as the def cordinator seeing the def dominate last season not giving up a rushing td until what week 14 or 15 with a season playing under vic last season with no off season and accoplished what they did now a second season ota and mini camps if you start talking best def ever with knowing the play book and schemes having all 11 starters back best ever to me means fewest points allowed the off will have to practice against them every day what will that do for them offensively come gameday

  24. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

I mean yes ,sometimes I post things that may not come out right, but I try to keep my posts about CURRENT 49er issues and players and coaches, goings on with the team as I have read them from media outlets and various other 49er blogs that I subscribe to,and then form my own opinion on those same said issues. I dont post how I go around talking smack to other teams fans about what weve done in the past as on organization,I tend to keep my eyesight into the here and now and glipmse into the future, your lucky that ALOT of people dont insult you on an every comment post basis, because in reality, just about EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR POSTS could be ridiculed

    # 1 D-FENSE 2012: You sound like you know very intimately the trials & tribulations of what happens when someone switches their names/alias. Sounds like it would come from someone very experienced in that kind of thing. Just making an observation.

  26. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on Jun 19, 2012 | Reply

@ dave g yes, very astute of you,I have 1st hand knowledge of the whole name changing thing,my wife was posting almost daily on this morning tailgate blog from work when some folks gave her a rather bad time on a post she made about alex smith. I do belive it was the morning tailgate blog clowns 11 years with alex and jeromy that were at the core of her reasons for her name changing, and like with most all women, she kept changing her mind, hence the whole knowing of what,”your comment is awaiting moderation” means, but yes dave, a very observant observation of you.

as you often point out to others who post stupid stuff, the person who calls themselves rjdniner/basil constantly post things so stupid. case in point, the post rjdniner/basil made about telling steelers and ravens fans that they have both lost super bowls,c’mon man it wasnt even that long ago when the ravens won the super bowl, and if dude was as big of a fan as he claims to be he would know that the ravens have only been to one. I think dude is a wagon jumping fan who hasnt paid much attention to the niners for the last 9 years and is using the 49ers newly found success to boast how huge of a fan he is,NOT
