Morning Tailgate: June 14

Posted by Taylor Price on June 14, 2012 – 10:19 AM

The final day of San Francisco 49ers minicamp is here, and that means players will soon be on their own to stay fit and mentally sharp until training camp begins. But once practice concludes in the afternoon on Thursday, Jim Harbaugh will address the media on what he saw from his team in the offseason program.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio met with the media on Wednesday to discuss the strides being made by his unit. According to Fangio, the squad can be even better than last season, but matching eye-popping statistics like 38 forced turnovers might be difficult to duplicate.

However, Fangio has raised the expectations for the defense, and second-year linebacker Aldon Smith, whom Fangio expects to become an every-down linebacker in 2012.

More 49ers headlines can be found after the jump.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee offers his day two minicamp notes. Barrows: “Rookie receiver Nathan Palmer is a popular target when he’s on the field. He had perhaps the catch of the day when – while moving across the field – he reached back with his left hand for a Josh Johnson pass that was badly behind him and tipped it to his right hand for the reception. That was rivaled only by a two-handed diving catch by Kyle Williams on a dart from Alex Smith.”

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shares his practice notes. Maiocco: “Cornerback Tramaine Brock had a solid day with a couple of interceptions, including a pick of a Kaepernick pass that sailed over Randy Moss’ head at the left sideline. He also had an interception of Josh Johnson in a one-on-one drill.”

ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando looks at the probability of Smith surpassing his 14.0 sacks as a rookie. Sando: “Smith did have 12 of his 14 sacks in second halves, including nine in fourth quarters. He had no first-quarter sacks.”

Undrafted rookie safety Michael Thomas spoke with Comcast SportsNet. video courtesy of CSNBayArea.com.

49ers.com’s minicamp coverage included Frank Gore’s comments on being named the NFL Network’s Top 100 of 2012’s No. 28 overall player, minicamp practice notes detailing Alex Smith’s big day and photos from the practice session.

after reading the article entitled “fangio rasies expectations for aldon smith” I was glad to see some credit being given to the un-sung hero of our defense. for years now parys haralson has been quietly setting the edge against the run so that our LB’s can stuff the run. aldon smith has quite a job ahead of him if he thinks he stands a chance of taking away the full time starter job @ ROLB away from haralson,,of course I want to see aldon SMASHING the qb, but not at the expense of stout run defense. I like the fact that fangio said,”he has to play AS GOOD or better than parys against the run to crack the starting line-up. however it turns out,im sure that coach harbaugh and fangio like having these kinds of things to work on in camp instead of a bunch of negative things

Hey D-FENSE. If you are going to continue to talk to yourself, at least turn off the CAPS KEY and stop yelling. It makes you sound doubly foolish.

SHOUTING or typing softly, hating on Alex Smith or Kyle Williams aside how exciting is having this team after soooo long of hearing about the “old days” when we struck fear in opposing teams. The future is now my friends look for the niners to win 3 superbowls in the next 5-6 years mark my words not just wishful thinking.
