Morning Tailgate: May 29

Posted by Taylor Price on May 29, 2012 – 10:01 AM

Fresh off Memorial Day Weekend, it’s time to start up the Morning Tailgate here on Goal Posts, not like you guys didn’t have the grills on all weekend anyway…

The first, and perhaps most noticeable headline of the weekend, came from Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, who has submitted his Super Bowl XLVII winner in late May.

Maiocco has the San Francisco 49ers hoisting up the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

“The 49ers exceeded all reasonable expectations in Jim Harbaugh’s first year as head coach,” Maiocco wrote. “That will not happen this season.”

According to the longtime 49ers beat writer, San Francisco is his choice for many reasons. Chief among them, the team returns every key player from last year’s dominant defense and added key upgrades on the offensive side of the ball. It remains to be seen if Jim Harbaugh can have his team race off to a Super Bowl title in his second season in San Francisco, but the 49ers coach continues to guide his players through offseason workouts with the mantra of getting better every day.

More on the latest 49ers headlines, including Harbaugh’s interest in motorsports can be found after the jump.

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle outlines the role Harbaugh as a founding partner in Panther Racing, a 15-year-old IRL racing team that features Sausalito native J.R. Hildebrand driving a No. 4 car, Harbaugh’s uniform number as an NFL player. Branch: “As a coach of the 49ers, Harbaugh is fond of saying he wants his team to get “a mile per hour” faster each day. Griffin, laughing, said the expression might be traced to Harbaugh’s obsession with helping Panther win, in whatever small way he could.”

Branch also shared Hildebrand’s comments on Harbaugh. The IRL racer happens to be a lifelong 49ers fan, too.

Branch profiled undrafted 49ers running back Jewel Hampton, who signed with the 49ers based on their extreme interest following the 2012 NFL Draft.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee takes a look at the 49ers’ options at backup punt returner behind Ted Ginn Jr.

wooot team is lookin good …..backups are shaping up to compete ….and the RB situation is awesome ….i would like to see a couple of packages this year come out and dazzle the oposition …..if ..and i do mean if …the alex hype is real ..than we do look rather solid ……if not then we are bound for the same few wins maybe division and then squat……my hope is the team can carry alex a little further this year so they may be rewarded for there efforts of last year despite the woes of alex

11 years, I don’t get how you can write your hatred toward Alex Smith day after day after day after day after day. What does that do for you?what does it get you? If can’t be a fan of the whole team, then why be a fan at all. If you hate Alex Smith that’s your choice but don’t drag me into it day after day after day after day after day after day.
I love when I can read other peoples excitement for the up coming season and all the players that we aquired, we finally have a full off season with a great coaching staff. Can’t wait to see all the hard work pay off, especially Alex Smith’s.

What really pleases me as a diehard 49er fan is, the 49ers are prepping for another Super Bowl run instead of feeling sorry for themselves and moping around. GO 49ers!

They really need to get rid of Kyle Williams. I believe in forgiveness, but no one wants to see KW in a 49er uniform, he should go play for his dad.

If just a tad of that venom would roll back down his throat …

@ 11 years with Alex: if and when you get a moment (and I’m not about to be either flip or facetious) I would personally appreciate it if you would share (I’m just speaking from YOUR perspective) what this Anti-Alex Smith is all about. Just what is it rooted in that is so seemingly impossible to let go of. Or maybe you do really realize that your ongoing rant irritates and that is your intent. Well, I am only guessing because I don’t know. Thus I ask your clarification. Any logical person should/would deduce that this man signing another contract (his third I believe) is a pretty sure indicator he is NOT going anywhere. Stevie Wonder can see that. And it just puzzles me no end why people like you can’t.

Yes, I believe that if the Niners can beat the Packers, the first game of the season and stay healthy. They will win all this second season under Harbaugh.

  11. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on May 29, 2012 | Reply

well just to clarify for all the new bandwagoners who now that the niners show some light they all want in on the action …..the team is shapeing up to be off the hook this year with the whole defense coming back …un heard of in this day and age …the stable of RB’s we have to vie for a spot ….as well as a new rookie receiver and freeagents …..the whole team is striveing ….and yet alex after 7 years of blah play finally realized and took all of 2 weeks to try and fix his mechanics which are horrible shall see where that goes ….second his inability to score on a regular basis unless the other team goes into man coverage of course …is bad as well ….and dont start with the int’s or the record ….Kap could go in there and throw checkdowns all day long ….as well

  12. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on May 29, 2012 | Reply

i have watched alex for all these years and same story you makeing excuses and him doing the same thing every year ….nothing ..not even showing improvement in any part of the game and yet sure he is still here yet he went on the market and got slapped around …too funny and yet still the excuses oh the other teams backed off so the niners could get him back ….oh my that was a good one ….lol…..still cant believe you bash me and yet let someone say that ….fact is he is average and i dont want average for our team ….he can talk and practice real well wich seems to have netted him 80 million dollars …as for the city and team they get nothing but same old alex

Funny how a fan can talk about inadequacies of Alex Smith, when a former NFL QB and successful college and now NFL coach, is able to see the positives and more importantly the potential of Alex Smith. I guess some fans think they know more than a winning coach who’s played the position, lol.

did any of those guys have a defense like the niners ….hmmm think hard i dont remember …the steel dolphins or the houston wall …..lol and whats a danny white …..the niners are undefeated in superbowls for a reason ….great defense and what …wait for it ………..really good QB………right now the niners have an awesome defense and a ……bad mechanics QB who is on a team witha 13-3 record and doesnt get a probowl nod …doesnt even get comeback player of the year or even when he goes into freeagency ….not 1 team really …dont say dolphins they didnt really want him ….wanted him ….they took tebow and a 2 game win… back up from the packers….so yeah fight over that and no i will not settle for alex ever as i never wanted to settle for jeff garcia or sean hill ……alex was suposed to be this huge football geek who scored high and was suposed to be the next prototype QB …and yet after 7 years he maybe thinks his mechanics are bad thats about it ………lol what a joke

everything looks great i pray we stay healthy…seems everyone is working hard and getting along…@jon listen bro I was crushed by Kyle Williams fumbles just as much as every other 49er fan out there and I hated him for many weeks…But honestly he is a very good talent with excellent speed and will be a very good WR in the NFL lets just not have him return punts!!! But i want him on the roster he is a very good back up!!

“the niners are undefeated in superbowls for a reason ….great defense and” F Solomon, D Clark, M Wilson, J Rice, J Taylor!

2011 WR’s J Morgan, Edwards, Crabtree, Ginn Jr, Williams!
    There’s a 2011 story behind each WR ………

  38. By dave g. on May 30, 2012 | Reply

Basil..Eleven & Jeromy obviously only blame ALEX for “EVERYTHING”. Yeah he even fumbled 3 times in the NFC Championship game now. He chooses to see & not see whats convenient for him to keep him hating & blaming 1 person. He is obsessed with somehow convincing us that was the ONLY issue. Somehow though the coaches seems to be missing everything that HE see’s! Obviously he is a football genius….IN HIS MIND & JEROMY ONLY!!! According to him -Nothing else needed to be addressed this offseason except for that 1 person thats why Baalke & Harbaugh went out and signed & drafted WR, WR, WR & ZERO QB!!!! Cuz thats what teams do when the problem is QB. They don’t sign or draft a QB & get WR, WR, WR. It makes all the sense in the world. What a couple of clowns!

  39. By # 1 D-FENSE 2012 on May 30, 2012 | Reply

YES,those two clowns are either stupid or fans of some other team. yes, alex has struggled most of his career, showing flashes of some very good quarterback play as well, lack of a good coaching staff has most of the blame there I believe, and a certain lack of confidence on alex’s part as well.when you have no one showing you how to get better, how can you expect to improve? just look how far alex smith has come in just a short time working with harbaugh and his coaching staff, remember, there was NO OFF SEASON last year, just alex running camp alex before the new collective bargining deal was reached. one can only think that with a whole off season to work within greg romans system and harbaugh’s teaching’s,alex could, and should, get much better.there are many example of qb’s who struggled early in their careers and flourished once they got to a team with a head coach and staff who knew how to teach the qb position. I think alex will improve greatly this year and help this team win the division

As we have been saying ALL along:

    http://blog.49ers.com/2012/05/30/harbaugh-smith-address-manning-evaluation/

Harbaugh never wanted to say it before out of respect for Manning BUT he never truly wanted Manning OR there is no doubt Manning would have signed with us. We offered the best choice for him. Its laughable to honestly believe he preferred Denver over us. We never formally made an offer!!!! His health risk & salary cap hit alone would have been unwise. Harbaugh is finally saying something because of the idiots out there who wont let the negativity rest so in the end he said “F” respect for Peyton, I got to think of my QB.
