Morning Tailgate: May 3

Posted by Taylor Price on May 3, 2012 – 10:07 AM

San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman has gone from the No. 91 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft to the No. 85 ranking on the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2012.

“#85 gotta work harder,” Bowman tweeted last night after he was announced as the 85th best player in the game. “Thanks Niner Faithful for the support.”

In his first year as a starter, Bowman racked up a team-leading 173 tackles to go along with 2.0 sacks, three fumble recoveries and eight pass breakups. Bowman joined NFL Network following his selection, where he discussed his working relationship with All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis. Bowman said he felt they were the best linebacker duo in the NFL today.

Meanwhile, the 49ers linebackers were hard at work in Football School, the second phase of the team’s offseason program.  Willis, Bowman and a handful of defensive players took turns in the gauntlet drill. Willis said the linebackers joined in the drill because they don’t want to have any weaknesses in their game.

More team headlines can be found after the jump.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com continues previewing offseason storylines for various position groups, this time he takes a look at what GM Trent Baalke calls the 49ers’ “full house” at running back.

Maiocco also shares the dates for the 49ers offseason minicamps and organized team activities. Rookie minicamp is slated for May 11-13; veteran minicamp will run June 12-14. In addition, 10 days of OTAs will be May 22-24, May 29-31 and June 4-7.

Andrew Perloff of SI.com predicts the 32 picks for the 2013 NFL Draft.

Fullback Bruce Miller provided some quality responses in our latest 49ers.com live chat.

The 49ers five-time Pro Bowl linebacker shares kind words on Junior Seau. Head coach Jim Harbaugh also offered a statement released by the team.

we are for sure set at OLB/MLB,,our DL could use some depth at DE I think,,looking at our current roster on 49ers.com no one is listed as a LE or RE,,we got justin smith,,who is a natural RE,,after that,,we got sopoaga,,mcdonald,,jean francois,,williams,,,tukuafu,,,and dobbs,,all trying to secure that LE spot,,I mean I know that sopoaga has been primarily used at DT,,but has also lined up at end,,,training camp is going to be VERY,VERY competitive,,,and I am looking forward to it

So excited for the season! Last year was the first year of something special and it just continues from there! LETS GO 9ERS! WHO’S GOT IT BETTER THAN US?! NOBODY!!!!

We really got a great team this year! I am not using the emotion of being a 49er fan to make that statement. We are really loaded this year & are primed for a Championship! All the pieces are coming together.

Remember when the aints had Vaghn Johnson, Sam Mills and Pat Swilling? Well no one has it better than us with our crew. Could it be the best Niner D ever? Scarlet Fever is going to make some teams ill this year!

yes dave,,all the pieces are truly coming together,,last year we avoided the injury bug,,with the amount of talent we have this year,if can once again avoid the injury bug we can for sure make a push for the lombardi trophy,,WR,TE, RB,,,all these roster spots are strong,,,and I read that they are considering moving anthony davis from RT to RG,,thereby opening the door for alex boone to start at RT,,,I HAVE SAID FOR NEARLY 2 SEASONS NOW THAT DAVIS IS MORE SUITED FOR GUARD THAN TACKLE,,I HOPE THAT I AM RIGHT AND HE KICKS SOME AS$ AT THE SPOT

I think Nat Byham will make a big difference in the offensive blocking sceam this year. The only solid blocking tight end on the team. With jim at the controls I would hope they would also throw to him more as he has a great set of hands. When singeltary was the coach he was open 90 % of the time.

ALDON SMITH ONLY PLAYED 60% ALL ON 3RD DOWN LAST YEAR AND HAD 14 SACKS /HALF SACK OFF ROOKIE RECORD . SHOULD HAVE BEEN ROOKIE OF YEAR . WE DO HAVE THE BEST LINEBACKING CORE IN N.F.L.///AS FANSTER LISTED THEM 4 YALL . ITS GOOD TO SEE REAL FANS BE ABLE TO GIVE NAMES WITHOUT LOOKING AT A LIST. YOU KNOW WE WERE SO CLOSE LAST YEAR THAT YOU KNOW ITS BEEN EATING AT THESE GUYS TO GET PLAYING. THAT HUNGER GIVES US OUR CHANCE . AND WE CAN ADD THE WOLE PLAY BOOK THIS YEAR INSTEAD OF 1 THIRD .// JUST WHEN THEY WATCH THE TAPE ON US WE WILL HAVE ALL NEW PLAYS ADDED

Irish faithful since ’84. Cannot believe how good we look now after all these poor years. I looked forward to every game when we were rubbish. Can’t wait to see what jim has lined up for us this year now that we’re motoring.
Come on Alex – take some chances, the odd int is ok – you’re the missing link now son.

hey gary douglas,,seriously dude?,,the only solid blocking TE on the team?? you obviously didnt watch too many 49er games this past season,if you had,you would have seen delanie walker smashing fools into the ground with his wham and kick-out blocks,,,or how about his movement on the line of scrimmage from TE to FB and lead block for gore and hunter on 45% of our running plays,,,nate byham?? open 90% of the time when singletary was coach?? didnt know singletary was the QB then…dude,,,seriously,,leave the 49er talk to true 49er fans,,or at least to more informed 49er fans,,,nate byham,,gimme a break

  13. By the fanster on May 3, 2012 | Reply

I sure seem to remember vernon davis and delanie walker out there during our 2 TE sets and formations,,,even when we went to a 3 TE set,,it was davis, walker, and bruce miller at the 3rd TE spot on the line of scrimmage,,
