Morning Tailgate: April 30

Posted by Taylor Price on April 30, 2012 – 9:45 AM

Now that the 2012 NFL Draft is in the books, several prominent football writers have praised the performance of San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke.

The 49ers GM identified a player, Wake Forest guard Joe Looney, as a prospect worth drafting in the third-round. However, Baalke moved back three times, picking up a sixth-round pick (Michigan State safety Trenton Robinson), and three selections in next year’s draft (Carolina’s third-round pick, Indianapolis’ fifth-round pick and Miami’s sixth-round pick).

When it was all said and done, the 49ers ended up selecting Looney in the fourth-round and had four additional picks to show for it.

The draft day experience for many of the 49ers rookies was unique to say the least. First-round selection A.J. Jenkins’ arrival in the Bay Area was documented exclusively by TV49.

Robinson’s experience was also captured over the weekend by a Michigan television station.

More on Robinson’s draft weekend and other 49ers headlines after the jump.

Peter King of SI.com praises Baalke’s draft weekend in his annual Monday Morning Quarterback column. King lists Baalke as his GM of the weekend along with Buddy Nix of the Buffalo Bills.

ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando reviews the 49ers draft class, noting that the team made a concerted effort to improve the offensive side of the ball with an already stout defense in place.

Michael Lombardi of NFL.com calls 49ers seventh-round pick Cam Johnson out of Virginia, one of the top-12 late-round value picks in the draft.

NBC 25 in Flint, Mich., joined Robinson for his entire draft weekend experience. Watch the Michigan State product go through the three-day process which ended with him donning a San Francisco 49ers fitted hat as the team’s sixth-round draft pick.

Lastly, the 49ers first-round draft pick is giving away signed photos through his Official Facebook Page. Make sure you “Like” A.J. Jenkins’ page.

This entire process, beginning with the elevation of Baalke, continuing with the hiring of Harbaugh and his ultimate staff, to this current draft, is all like some magnificent dream from which one does not want to waken. Wow. A “standing O” for Trent Baalke & Company. Excellent work gentlemen. Excellent.

I remember all the doomsayers when York hired Baalke. Now we are praising Baalke How about some praise for York? Thank you Mr. York for the hiring and thank you Baalke, for not letting Harbaugh get away. Tough schedule this year but “who has it better than us?”

Mike Lombardi on NFL Network basically said we just added a Desean Jackson & Leshawn McCoy to the team in this draft with Jenkins & James. I like the sound of that.

Well actually I think this all started when the controls were turned over to Jed! He’s done all he said he would, he hired all the right people and then stepped back.
Who has it better then us? nooooodody!

What a draft I give it an A- could be higher! And the thing that I really want to see is how the Crab`man reacts? He’s better get his butt inn gear, and stop the snickering about Alex, because this isn’t about his roster spot its more about his career with the 9ers. We got some guys that will be hungry, and willing to fight for that Job, up until now its just been the Crabtree’s job, no more!
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

Anybody see the interview with Suzy Creamcheese and Harbaugh on ‘of course’ espy, Talked about the draft, he just comes across so positive. About the only time I’ve we see them talk about our 9ers! But anyhow it sure was good to see coach,
we don’t get much up here ‘Wa.’ Can’t wait for the season!

  15. By Basil on Apr 30, 2012 | Reply

and BTW I haven’t seen many talking heads that seem to care for our number one pick, though most thought the same way last year with pour Aldon Smith pick …..

  16. By SHIP on Apr 30, 2012 | Reply

Our offense got faster and more talented overnight! Its amazing what they have done! This season is going be exciting. We have the same offensive scheme for consecutive years and much more bullets in the chamber then we have had since our last SB!

  17. By SHIP on Apr 30, 2012 | Reply

Those talking heads can kiss our @ss. They said the 1986 draft was terrible back in the day after it happened. Yeah…I bet none of them want to admit that one! HAHAHA!

  18. By Basil on Apr 30, 2012 | Reply

Yep, we sure the heck did get fast real fast, we can play smash mouth or licked split down the sidelines. ‘Ship’ you’re right on Dude. For the first time Alex has the tool to work with, and most of all (a game plan) I’m so stoked I can’t even sleep at night, let the games begin …. please?
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

As Dave G already knows, I think Crab is a sub par WR.With free agent Super Mario and and Moss and AJ Jenkins guess who is taking a backseat to them all.. Awesome draft this team offensively just got speedy quick scary

So excited about the draft. SPEEDY PLAYMAKERS added on offense. SPEED and POWER on D. IS it September YET?

  23. By NINERSS ALL DAYYY on Apr 30, 2012 | Reply

Im so hyped cant wait for the season to start…we got fast guys who fit our system well…offense is so much better…Ginn can just focus on returns…hopefully moss can draw the defenses best corner on him, that will open things up for manningham crab and jenkins and most importantly DAVIS…defenses can no longer put a corner or safety on him and theres no chance a LB can cover him so its a wrap…and now there wont be 8 in the box at all times!!!!

  24. By Basil on May 1, 2012 | Reply

“Ginn can just focus on returns…” Yep! Ginn doesn’t have the hands for WR. But I didn’t realize how important Ginn is to our team till thee nfc championship game!
After our 2011 loss, I’m looking forward to a ‘SPEEDED’ recovery. What a great time to be a Niner fan, eh?
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

something else we haven’t touched on here, our Offensive line! Takes time for the O- line to come together and this is their 3rd year ‘Davis and Lupati’ the line should be much better. Now Snyder replacement Looney (?) as I understand he’s had some concussion problems, hope his Okay? not just for us but for his own sake. Football time yet, eh?
    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONINERS!

With the number of WR’s we now have in camp, will Williams make the final cut?
