Morning Tailgate: April 26

Posted by Taylor Price on April 26, 2012 – 10:27 AM

The day we’ve all been waiting months for is finally here, the 2012 NFL Draft is now upon us. It should be a pretty busy three-day stretch of coverage on 49ers.com, beginning at 5:00 p.m. PT tonight when the draft officially begins.

We’ll have our annual live draft room camera on throughout the weekend which gives fans the ultimate insight into the team’s draft weekend deliberations. Also, make sure to check out our Draft Central throughout the weekend for the latest videos, stories and photos on this year’s draft class.

Before we begin the biggest day of the offseason, let’s take one last look at the latest 49ers draft projections.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock revealed his 2012 mock draft which had the 49ers taking Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright with the No. 30 overall selection.

Chad Reuter of NFL.com offers a seven-round mock draft where he sees the 49ers taking the following players in rounds one through seven: Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill, Illinois guard Jeff Allen, Miami outside linebacker Olivier Vernon, Florida defensive end Jaye Howard, Mississippi State center Quentin Saulsberry, Northwestern State cornerback Jeremy Lane and South Carolina State free safety Christian Thompson.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee examines the likelihood of six prospects (Bruce Irvin, Coby Fleener, Stephen Hill, Amini Silatolu, Kendall Wright and Kevin Zeitler) being drafted by the 49ers in the first-round.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shares his final mock draft of the 2012 offseason with Silatolu being San Francisco’s first-round selection. Maiocco also writes that the 49ers would be best served to target a wide receiver in later rounds due to this year’s depth at the position.

Rob Rang of CBSSports.com reveals his final top 100 players of this year’s draft class.

Lastly, make sure to read 49ers.com’s live chat transcript with quarterback Alex Smith. Plenty of humorous and insightful comments came from Smith during the hour-long session.

On twitter you said that Baalke thinks he can find contributors to the team in all 7 rounds of this draft. Why would he say such a silly thing when he knows that there is NO chance that 7 rookies make this team this year ? Baalke is smart and he must know that he needs to use some of the later round picks to trade up in a couple rounds, to get the best possible players available. Drafting 7 rookies will only mean that he will need to cut 2 or 3 of them,so why draft them ?

    A. J. Jenkins? With WR Stephen Hill & B Doug Martin still on the board? Why do I get the feeling we could have gotten A. J. Jenkins with our 2nd pick? I am not an expert but this pick makes me really wonder.
