Morning Tailgate: April 24

The 2012 NFL Draft is three days away, and we can all agree, nobody has any indication on what the San Francisco 49ers will do with the No. 30 overall selection.
Trent Baalke, however, has a pretty good idea. The 49ers general manager said last week that there’s one player the team has in mind for its first-round pick. Yet, the rest of us continue to debate over potential 49ers on our water cooler visits.
Thankfully, respected NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock has revealed his top 100 draft prospects and rankings by position. Mayock’s opinions will give fans a better idea of which players will be available when the team drafts at No. 30, No. 62 (second round) and No. 91 (third round).
Mayock’s rankings, 49ers draft needs and more headlines can be found after the jump.
Roger Goodell will announce San Francisco’s first-round pick, but Jesse Sapolu, a 13-year veteran on the 49ers offensive line, will be at the draft to announce the team’s second and third round selections. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com shares a list of all the former NFL players who will be announcing second- and third-round picks for their respective clubs.
Mike Mayock’s top-100 draft prospects and positional ranking on NFL.com are a great primer for anyone seeking draft insight.
Evan Silva of ProFootballTalk.com lists guard, wide receiver, defensive line and cornerback as the 49ers biggest needs heading into the draft.
Peter King of Sports Illustrated foresees the 49ers being inclined to take the best player available regardless of position. King referred to Baalke as a “traditionalist” when it comes to the draft.
ESPN.com NFC West blogger Mike Sando shares the results of ESPN blog network’s mock draft. On behalf of the 49ers, Sando selected North Alabama cornerback Janoris Jenkins.
Wes Bunting of NationalFootballPost.com continues his week-long mock draft and has the 49ers selecting Pittsburgh guard Lucas Nix in the fourth round (No. 125 overall) and California defensive end Trevor Guyton in the fifth round (No. 165 overall).
NFL Network analyst and NFL.com contributor Michael Lombardi shares 10 draft predictions which includes a note about Syracuse defensive end Chandler Jones being a “hot commodity.”
Safety Colin Jones became the first 2011 draft class member to share reflections from his rookie season with 49ers.com.

wow,as if alshon jeffrys didnt have enough red flags on him coming out, there is a fast spreading rumor that the kid tested positive for pot before the combine

Trent and Jim will take the best player available. WR OL CB DL all are choices that would be great with the 30th pick and we have the luxury of taking the best player at those positions. My only advice is OL is stacked in this draft so I think we can get a solid OL in the later rounds, also we have Kilgore and Boone ready to step up to the starting position so we should focus on a WR like Hill if hes still there and if not and Hill is gone we should go for either DB Stephan Gilmore or DL in Dontario Poe or Chandler Jones. My man Justin Smith is a beast but he is in his last years and we need to replace him while hes still with us so a rookie can learn from him

ok i got things kinda going on trading for browns 4th pick yesterday for blackmon..looking more into blackmon i agree it’s not worth wasting draft picks with that said at 30th we will see…so lets go past 1st rd. and move to the all important later rds……i love this guy cousins qb from mich.st, i know i know kram don’t start with qb stuff but he could just be that diamond we niner fans have been waiting since joe…not comparing him to joe in anyway…my daughters name is montana enough said…coach is a big ten guy..seeing more tape and hearing cousins talk he is a winner. with the sighing of johnson it kinda rises a question on coachs take of kap..i think kap. could be odd man out if he doesn’t show big this preseason…

when you watch one playr in particular you tend to fall in love with that player and maybe get a little dis-illusioned with how high a talent level that player may have
By the fanster on Apr 24, 2012 | Reply
you seem to have this love affair with anyone playing for south carolina

What??? If the Niners move up to 15 and take Stephen Hill, that will be a joke! The dude had 28 catches! I know Megatron is the bomb from the same school and Hill’s combine #s were sick. But you know who else blew up the combine? Taylor Mays. If we trade up for 15, that’s expensive. The only way we do that is for Decastro.Taking Hill would be idiotic. Our starting quarterback cant even make a deep throw, so unless Kaep gets the call, his 28 catches will be his ceiling. No thank you. If you’re right about the opportunity for 15, it has to be DeCastro.

@ hmrhead,,,moving up intoo the top 10 is expensive,,moving down to 15 wouldnt be that costly,,,but I dont think hill is the targeted player,,,,nor do I think its decastro,,,nor do I think they will move down att all,,,like I said,,,this reporter, along with many others, were following baalke from the parking lot of the headquarters into the building,,,one of them asked about the RUMOUR,,,HERE LOOK AT THIS RJD,,,,the rumor going araound that a certain un-named team had contacted the 49ers about trading down with them,,,then a bit later during his again look at this closely rjd,,,during his WEEKLY RADIO SHOW,,,,that, yes a certain team which he could not name at this time had indeed contacted him about a POSSIBLE TRADE,,,
By the fanster on Apr 25, 2012 | Reply
baakle does a WEEKLY radio show with 95.7 the game fm here in the bay area and also does a WEEKLY radio show with our local am station knbr 680,,

By dave g. on Apr 25, 2012 | Reply
First off the Niners don’t have to move in the top 15 to get WR Stephen Hill because he does have doubters. I am not one of those doubters. Although, I do agree it would be stupid to trade up & give up extra picks for a guy you can get closer to the end of the 1st round, I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH THE TAYLOR MAYS COMPARISON. HmrHead…you seem to have this thought in your head that we are only looking at his combine numbers. Although combines don’t tell you the whole story, its enough for you to look a little closer. You know who had insane numbers at the combines BUT not so much in college? T.O.!!!! He was drafted in the 3rd round. He only had 667 yds & 1 TD his senior year in college (Chatanooga-Tenn) BUT he outshined all the 1st and 2nd rounders in combines: Keyshawn (1st player chosen that year!) had incredible stats in college, Terry Glenn, Eddie Kennison, Marvin Harrison, Eric Moulds, Armani Toomer, & many more ahead of T.O. My point is this: STOP WITH THE MAYS COMPARISON. T.O. was considered a beast even between those guys at the combines. For every Mays comparison, I can come up with a T.O. comparison. You need to watch more football than just what has happened lately and just as much as there is more than just combines, there is more than just stats! Hmrhead.

coach walsh took a big chance a on a kid from tiny mississpi valley state,,moving up from 28 to 18 I believe,,,stealing jerry rice away from the dreaded cowboys,,coach walsh always said,,if your in love with the guy,go get him before someone else does,,,stephen hill has so much upside,,he is well worth the risk vs reward factor,,,and if he IS the guy the 49ers have targeted in the 1st round,,,with all the media build-up surrounding hill they may feel inclined to move up to get him before someone like,,denver,,,or pittsburgh,,,or anyone else for that matter,,,regardless,,,we will know soon enough,,,right on dave for staying true to all these morning tailgate blogs,,,there are so few of us,,,rjd is one of us,,,we will have soooo much to blog about on thursday and threw the week-end,,,right on everyone AND GO 49ERS!!!!!!!!!!
By dave g. on Apr 25, 2012 | Reply
Oh yeah Hmrhead, and BTW with those 28 catches Hill got he had 820 yrds & 5 TDs. Thats 29.3 yds a catch and a TD in every 5-6 catches! Do you even realize how hard that is to do in the GT offense? His senior numbers demolishes T.O.’s senior numbers who only had 1 TD. At the #30 spot that would be fantastic value for a 6’4″ guy who runs a 4.3. Do you even realize what that kind of beast can do for an offense? You the joke for not knowing fully what you talking about!

misunderstanding I was talking about what I had posted last year, about losing players to FA and thought for sure we would lose a coach or two. But for Josh and Synder we did well?
