Morning Tailgate: April 23

Posted by Taylor Price on April 23, 2012 – 10:56 AM

Welcome to draft week.

It’s going to be a fun-filled week on 49ers.com where seven draft picks (as of now) will be added to the roster at the conclusion of the 2012 NFL Draft.

We’ll have plenty of 49ers draft content on our site this week for the Faithful to enjoy, but first, make sure you check out the 49 profiles we produced on this year’s top draft talent. Our “49 in 49” series concluded over the weekend with a look at Notre Dame safety Harrison Smith and UCF cornerback Josh Robinson.

More NFL Draft headlines can be found after the jump.

Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee might covet Stanford tight end Coby Fleener as his “draft crush,” but according to the 49ers beat writer, the team will draft Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Will. That’s who Barrows has the 49ers taking in his recently released mock draft.

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com has the 49ers taking Wisconsin guard Kevin Zeitler with the No. 30 overall selection. Maiocco also offers round-by-round picks for San Francisco, including Stanford wide receiver Chris Owusu as the team’s seventh-round selection.

Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle examines the team’s top needs as draft day approaches.

Case of the Mondays? Not for Ricky Jean Francois.

AHHHHHH DRAFT ………at least with the 1st pick prob being WR…Hill….sounds great. With a little luck he will be there and after that 2nd pick will show us where the team is headed as far as the team needs go …..sounds like they are good with the line on both sides as well as DB’s …..The offense seems to be the big issue ……..yet you would think that if the receivers we had last year in playoffs were to blame they would have been let go allready ………they sure have brought in lots of QB’s……..only few more days for that to marinate in so ……GO NINERS ….WITH SKILL AND LUCK WE SHALL HAVE A GOOD DRAFT AND GET 1 OR 2 ……ALDON TYPE PLAYERS OUT OF IT WHO WANT TO PLAY AND WIN AND PROGRESS……..NOT CRY THEY DONT HAVE THE SAME COORDINATOR

the strongest part of our team is what?,,,defense,,weakest part of our team is??
offense,,,which do we upgrade with the 1st pick?? I got a funny feeling we are ALL gunna be surprised

Our coach and staff know what their doing……Harbaugh and baalke have it handled…I trust in them what is best for our 49ers…….And please quit knocking our offense…we had the least turnovers in the nfl….a +28 turnover differential…..Can’t wait for this season to start…..Alex and the offense will be in the top ten this year under Romans playbook…..and Fangio will have his D ready to hit…….no bounty’s needed when your a Niner…..personally I think those coaches should have been suspended for good from the nfl…not just several months and a year…..were talking about players careers….hell man every time they go on that field something can happen…….incentive to take someone out is uncalled for…..especially what that coach did for the playoff game….we still came out victorious…..Go Niners

i’m not sold on hill…he needs alot of work..if moss pans out great it’s one year,, niner fans hope we get the new england/viking moss he is 35 brady isn’t throwing to him sooooo it’s a wait and see..manningham is a number 2 reciever and at last crabtree will he show up or be a non factor like most of last year,,add williams and it seems to me niners have made their bed on w/r’s…go get a rb..gore is aging and hunter is a third down back,,jacobs for the love of me why they got him i don’t know hurt alot and somewhat a head case..i liked dixon 2 years ago thought he would be heir to gore but another head case…i think poe will be gone so u people who want a dt i think not…so area needing depth is rb. martin from boisr st. just like gore he would fit nice…

  5. By kram on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

reason not sold on hill look at his numbers and just be cause a guy has a good combine makes him a first rd. pick? before combine where was he rated? as far as dt if poe is there take him but i don’t think he will..as far as oline niners have enough guys to step in.. get one late or pick up a seasoned vet who gets cut..i like gilmore cb. but he also will be gone so thats why i say they draft martin rb from boise st….and get a cb or wr in second rd.

i have one idea trade up for browns number 4 pick and take blackmon before rams do at 6th…give this years first and next year 2nd throw in crabtree,,,holmgren likes picks

  7. By rjdniner on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

kram…. Even if the Rams get blackmon they got alot more hols to fill and the draft is a roll of the dice, am still going with Alhson Jeffery Dont forget that Holmgren is off that …. Bill Walsh coaching tree ,,,,

  8. By dave g. on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

I would NOT trade up for WR Blackmon. He is not as good as where he is projected. He will be good.. BUT NOT GREAT. If you gonna do all that trading your picks to move up in the TOP 5…then you want GREAT for a WR. You would get better value with Hill or another big target later. Kram…do not under-estimate Hill. Sure his combine numbers and “performance” was nothing to sneeze at BUT you have to consider the offense he was in (you know like Calvin Johnson from GT). His size & speed & he averaged 1 TD for every 5-6 catches he caught is pretty eye-popping, oh yeah & look at his eye popping avg per catch. He has 3 inches on Blackmon with speed to burn. We desperately need a WR who can outleap everyone even when covered in the REDZONE.

  9. By the fanster on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

I agree with you 100% dave,,@ robert,,if you want to stop knocking our offense,,lets draft a stud WR and quit kicking field goals,,,you may be happy with kicking field goals but I surely am not,,we need a stud red zone threat to keep akers role limited,,

  13. By kram on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

i don’t think they will take hill at 30th..they addressed the wr position this off season and i don’t see it inless they move up for a top wr,,,,i hope they don’t take an oline get one in later rds….i think they will surprise us all look for fleener or martin thats my pick..hey pats do it with to te set…i also like jeff fuller texas a&m wr fullars son..got blood line pick in 4th rd.

  14. By kram on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

rjdniner they say jeffery is like a crabtree we don’t want him we got the orginal…

  15. By Joseph M on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

i Dont understand all of you guys wanting us to draft a WR. we went out in free agency and brought in 2 (Moss, Manningham). Then i read get a RB…really? We currently have 5 on the roster (Gore, Hunter, Jacobs, Dixon, Cartwright) no way in hell will they draft a Running back in first 2 rounds. There are 2 positions on this team that need answered. #1 Right Guard (Snyder and the terrible Rachal) both have been let go Snyder to the Cardinals Rachal to the Bears. WIth that being said the most sensible draft choice for the first round would be a Right Gaurd. #2 Secondary With the 49ers having to give Goldson a Franchise Tag do not be surprised if they draft a Safety in the 2nd round of this draft. My guess is they will take a Right Guard round 1 and Safety or Corner round 2. Anything else in my mind makes no sense.

Aaaaa I love this DRAFT day in few days the comes pre season and back to work on a season we almost took to the freeking super bowl. I say lets concentrate on receivers to help alex punch it in to this years super bowl…

  18. By dave g. on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

Joseph M calm down bro.. its not hard to understand….I am not sure you are looking at what we really have close enough. Do you really feel secured with Moss & his recent history? And how long will he play? You do realize Gore & Jacobs are 29 & 30 respectively (you know the lifespan of backs?)? Hunter is good but he is not an everydown back (more like a Sproles-look at his size) and Dixon (well who knows?). We all know Snyder & Rachel is gone..thats not news to us bro. We drafted Guard Kilgore right after Hunter last year & we have several promising dudes competing for that spot. There is a reason they let Snyder go..think about it. Now on the secondary, I don’t disagree on that point. Our top 3 needs are WR. S/CB & RB for now and to prep for the future without missing a beat. The order will be based on who is available at each spot.

  19. By dave g. on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

I wish people (Joseph M) would look at the whole roster, the overall picture for today & tomorrow and who we drafted recently instead of ONLY this years free agents comings and goings. Rock Cartwright you really lumping in with our RB’s? ARE YOU SERIOUS JOSEPH M.? Common dude do you really know what you talking about? Cartwright is a 10 year RB who plays SPECIAL TEAMS! He is merely replacing the loss of Blake Costanzo! I don’t mind people being wrong BUT don’t question us Hard Core Fans like we don’t know what we talking about when you obviously are just a “casual” follower of the team or you would know all this.

1st round:WR,,,2nd round:S/CB,,3rd round: RB,,unless they take doug martin in the 2nd round and go for that 6’1 CB from montana state in the 3rd round

  23. By rjdniner on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

Kram ……. ive made my choice it to late to back track now.. i watched him in alot of games … fanster as for as poe is cocerned if jim and trantt pick him… we ll have to waite and see if it pans out all the posts excellent

  24. By dave g. on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

Yeah Fanster. The order is based on who is available when our turn comes. I have been saying WR Stephen Hill for the past few months BUT I realize his stock has been rising and he may not even be available by pick #30 so whichever of those positions has the most value at pick 30 is the way they will go. If we can get a WR at #30 thats somewhat similar in value to one we can get in the 2nd, then we will wait and be patient. Maybe get Alshon Jeffrey (6’3″), Juron Criner (6’3″), Nick Toon(6’2″). If RBs David Wilson or Doug Martin are there & Hill is gone they may go with the back. Then at Safeties you have Harrison Smith and Trumaine Johnson who are both 6’2″. It all depends who is there at 30. If they all there, I say go with HILL who has INSANE upside!

dave g i got a feeling jeffery is going to fall to the secound rnd …….

Joseph you thinking were set at reciever is crazy. Yes we added two great recievers and Manningham can turn into one of our key players for years but is he truely a number 1? Im not sure. I love him and what he brings us but he works best opposite a true number 1 and we have Moss you say. Well Moss is old and will play another 2 tops 3 years and only will be with us if he can produce, we shall see. I hope and have faith he will and our organization must think so also. We need a WR in this draft and could have a shot at a great on with our first pick. Someone that can learn behind Moss for the next few seasons and then step into his role.

  27. By ELEVEN YEARS WITH ALEX on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

well we would like to see a franchise WR we can work with as well as a future RB….and a diamond in the rough QB ..prob kap i hope… his skill set is allready past alex…. when he gets his chance i do think he will take the reigns for years to come ….also grab another QB late never know several hall o famers who were picked in late rounds …..simple choices …NO….yet balke and coach are on a mission will be fun to see who is gotten and who remains starters as of preseason action. should be several surprises in store in the next few months

  28. By the fanster on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

QB kellen clemens of BOISE STATE in the 6th round would be a great value pick

  29. By 49fSINCE '67 on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

You know obviously it is anyone’s guess who the brain trust will pick with #30..maybe a receiver, maybe a lineman..could be a QB…a linebacker…the niners now have the luxury and I think they will of PICKING THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE reguardless of where they are from or what position they play…we used to own that statement now there is nothing better than to finally be able to say that again

  30. By ninerman on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

i think we take a wideout we should take a hard look at Brian Quick this guy is the one who will go across the middle he has body size 6.3″ , hands , quick feet , and no fear of the middle. He will complete the receiver core. He is a cross of John Taylor & a young T.O together( you tube him)

  31. By Hmrhead on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

You heard it here first. The “targeted player” is Doug Martin.

  32. By jason on Apr 23, 2012 | Reply

I completely trust Harbaugh and Baalke, they’ve given us no reason not to. My own preference however, as we only have three concrete team needs, would be to trade up for David Decastro. Best guard in the draft and a history with Harbaugh. That’d open up our run game even more and give Alex plenty of time to do his thing.

  33. By Jay on Apr 24, 2012 | Reply

I hope we get a solid first round pick this year, I am hoping for a wr or db. Oline has too many reserves.

  34. By kram on Apr 24, 2012 | Reply

they way i see it coach and the front office will take a guy that fits the niner system not the guy who is tops on all these mock draft sheets..like some years past they pick the guy rated high not the guy who fits the system and they flat out sucked..it’s all about the wr/rb/s/cb and so on who fits niner football who cares where he is rated…thats why it feels so awesome knowing we finally have a coach and gm who understand niner football again…like aldon smith they knew what they saw…and man he showed he fits in nicely!!!

  35. By dave g. on Apr 24, 2012 | Reply

Man if Taylor Mays would have NOT been such a bust we would not even be talking about Safety depth! It really ticks me off when I think about about! I really think he was SINGS guy!

  36. By rjdniner on Apr 24, 2012 | Reply

I wish we could that DB from south caroliana, him and culliver played together , get those two back together that would be nice ……

  37. By the fanster on Apr 24, 2012 | Reply

yes dave you hit it on the head,,taylor mays was singletary’s guy,,the kid looked good in practice and the rest is,,as they say,,,history,,but yes safety is our biggest need on defense,,,and some depth at corner and the d-line,,,and rjd,,you may know more of this that we here on the west coast,,but,,alshon jeffry may have tested positive for pot right before the scouting combine,,,as if the guy didnt have enough red flags surrounding him already,,,I hope its nothing but a rumor,,,but if its true I wont feel sorry for the kid,,,these kidsd have a chance to make MILLIONS of dollars,,,if they cant put down the doobie long enough o prepare for the combine, then they have no business being allowed to make that kind of money,,,stupid is as stupid does,,,

hey hmrhead,,,your late to the party with your doug martin pick,,,you know dave your right,,,these people who pop in on our daily blog sound off like they know it all,,,we,,the faithful,,, who have been on these morning tailgate blogs since they started months ago,,have a much better understanding of our roster,,,team needs,,and and idea of which direction we will go in the draft,,,now look im not saying that I,,we or anyone else,,can possibly know what harbaugh and baalke will do in the 1st round,,but come on,,,some of these posts regarding our 1st pick are just ludicrus

the fanster…you made your point a couple of times…rjdniner…I like your attitude..this is no place to put anybody down for ther opinions…as for the faithfull..can you state you have been a niner fan since Ted and John….even pre Brodie..I remember the start..I was a Wahington fan until the best to play football arrived..let peple voice thier opinion..you.ve been following the blog for months I read your stuff….I would not be at all disappointed if your pick matched the braintrusts…you two seam to have the best for the team in your mind…jjust give others thier say then let it go..except for an obvious few we are all ninerfans

  41. By sf49since67 on Apr 25, 2012 | Reply

filling a NEED is a wonderfull thing….I’m not so sure there is a need on this team, most of the core is back..depth is where you look next..are there weaker spots than others…always..unless there is a “perfect fit” for that weakness..I still say you take the best player available that will make you better..that is how you dominate for a decade (IE 80′s)
